REVIEW: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Rocks

Square-Enix’s subsidiary Eidos Montreal has tackled another sector of the Marvel universe in their adaptation of the Guardians of the Galaxy. When the first trailers dropped, it seemed like they took the original film franchise that started in 2014 and added a new rock-focused paint job. There was some skepticism with the focus on Star-Lord being the only playable character, Yet, as more trailers were released it offered a glimpse into what may be a fun new interpretation of these beloved characters and may offer one of gaming’s most unique world designs. Does it live up to its expectations or falter under the weight of expectation?

Guardians of the Galaxy' is already better than the 'Avengers' game | Engadget

The story starts simply with our group of Guardians trying to nab a decent bounty and make a quick buck. Yet, they end up getting caught for their infiltrating an unrestricted area and have to pay off a fine for the Nova Corps. As you can guess, it’s never that simple and things start to unravel from thereon. There’s a curious plot point that stands out as it humanizes the struggle Quill goes through in the story, as well as adds a layer to make it a surprisingly personal story as events unfold. This core narrative is one of the most exciting aspects of the game, as you follow these characters from one planet to another as everything just seems to unravel. We get a chance to explore a very different kind of Marvel galaxy with some familiar characters.

We have to keep in mind, Guardians of the Galaxy is an intellectual property that was completely unknown to non-comic readers until James Gunn redefined our understanding of them. Nowadays, they are a household name and you can see that some elements are inescapable when adapting these characters. Peter Quill and Drax share a lot of traits with their cinematic counterparts, especially the former with his love for music. Yet, they took an interesting angle by sticking to the 80s-inspired music but giving him a stronger rock-centric interest. That especially comes to the forefront with the fictional band Star-Lord, which is the new origin of his code name.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has Gone Gold

Drax is a good example of how they took the base personality of these characters from the films but added additional layers. He still takes things quite literally but is given a much more grounded personality this time around. He gets some of the most emotional scenes in the game, as we explore his relationship with his wife and daughter, or rather how he handles the tragedy. Every member of this group connects the overarching challenges to their core worries. Rocket has a fear that is rooted in his origin while Gamora has some baggage we slowly learn about throughout the story. Personally, though, Rocket is a standout character, who purposefully rubs you the wrong way before slowly we get to know the character better and why he behaves the way he does.

Of course, a game is more than just its core narrative. As the trailers promised, you only control Star-ord directly but can command your team throughout the battle scenarios. Every member is specialized in something and you’ll need to make use of each member to survive most encounters. That doesn’t mean Star-Lord is weak, as he uses his Elemental Guns that include different abilities. You’ll unlock most of them throughout the game, which is activated through a specific moment in Peter’s journey. At times, it does become a lot to keep an eye on and memorize throughout a fight. I’ve more than often accidentally activated the Huddle mechanic due to how easy it is to activate.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy im Test + Video: Starker Lizenztitel mit Story-Fokus

Speaking of, every game has some kind of special move that gives you bonuses or ways to take down enemies more efficiently. In Guardians of the Galaxy, it is called a huddle, where you call in your teammates, analyze their current mood and pick a fitting answer to motivate them. If you fail to do so, only Star-Lord will get a bonus. It’s an interesting idea that fits into the “leader” role of the character, but it’s kind of a pacing breaker. Everyone huddles up, they talk quite a bit, you choose an answer that you have to listen to the audio cue before you enter battle again. While an interesting idea, it’s also not satisfying outside of maybe getting back some special abilities and stat boosts. Also, I once got stuck in it and they just kept staring into my soul without a button prompt which was a fun experience.

I’ve experienced quite a few bugs while playing on the PlayStation 5. Some in-game models would pop out and into existence. Enemies would get stuck in place, or textures would take some time before they popped in. I even had the game suddenly crash on me in the middle of a fight, but it was only once in my entire playthrough. They’re far from a dealbreaker but were a bit noticeable. I also have to point out that there’s a great mechanic where you collect items and your crewmates share stories with you. For some reason, Drax was following me around and when I started a conversation with Gamora, he was stuck between us. It might be one of the funniest bugs I ever had, especially cause Drax not caring about personal space is in character for him.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Neuer Titel kommt ebenfalls für Switch

Still, even with these bugs, they don’t take away from the beauty of this game. The environments and creature designs might be some of the best I’ve seen in a game. Instead of grounding the concepts, they went with the wildest, Lovecraftian-inspired designs you could imagine. Each planet has a very distinct visual style, such as one covered in ice with fire raining from the sky. Even Nova Corps. ships have elements that make them visually stand out in contrast to the diverse flora and fauna you meet in your adventure.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy surprised me in many ways. The story is exciting and has that feeling of adventure you expect from this kind of game. Some emotional moments anchor these characters in interesting ways that make them stand out from their cinematic counterparts. Add in a dash of visual creativity and fun combat, you have a recipe that lends itself to a brand new franchise. Here’s hoping we get to explore more aspects of space in future entries. Just like the incredible music selection and fictional Star-Lord band, the game just rocks even with its faults.

E3: Square Enix and Team Ninja Unveil ‘Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin’

It looks like the rumors were true, as the rumored Dark Souls-inspired Final Fantasy game has been unveiled at the tail-end of their Square Enix Showcase event during E3. It also seems that Tetsuya Nomura has joined with Team Ninja to offer a unique experience to Final Fantasy fans, as they unveil its title s Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. The gameplay teased a very action-heavy game that will challenge players. With the subtle Origin, it’ll be interesting to see how it might tie into the overarching franchise and what purpose it may serve. Anyone else wonders why Chaos looks a lot like the first Final Fantasy‘s main antagonist Garland?

We finally got our first look at the Guardians of the galaxy from Eidos-Montréal, but they didn’t just stop there and even offered some gameplay. It seems that you’re decisions matter throughout the game, as the first cutscene teases that you can decide how to move forward with a mission. We also get a look at how combat works, as you control the various Guardians by giving them commands. We also see some RPG elements and ways to interact with locals from the various planets. It’s quite an exciting addition to Marvel’s expansion into gaming and hopefully, they have a lot more surprises heading our way in the future.

It seems Marvel’s venture into gaming continues to expand, as they finally unveiled the long-rumored Guardians of the Galaxy. We’ve heard about it for some time and it looks quite promising going by the first trailer. Eidos is working on the project and it’ll take us into the vast space of the Marvel Universe. The gameplay looks to have some similar elements from Marvel’s Avengers, but it promises some zany galactic adventures. It’s a single-player game but it seems to imply you only get to play as Star-Lord. Also,  am just excited to see Cosmo. It releases on October 26th. Yes, you read that right, it’s releasing this year.

Square Enix Reportedly Developing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Game

Square Enix made waves last year among superhero fans when the fabled gaming company that brought us classics like the Final Fantasy franchise published its first Marvel game, Avengers. Starring the most famous superhero IP on the planet, the game was unfortunately plagued by mixed reactions due to the early technical issues and the lack of endgame content. The game’s developer Crystal Dynamics has since made efforts to remedy some of these issues. But in spite of all the pushback the game has been getting, it seems that that isn’t deterring Square Enix from furthering their own Marvel IP, as gaming insider Jeff Grub is reporting that a Guardians of the Galaxy game is in the works.

There’s no word on what a Guardians game could look like under Square Enix. However, word on street is that Eidos Montreal is the company developing it. We can only hope that they learned from the good and bad that came out of the Avengers rollout and end up with a really solid game. Like the Avengers, there’s so much to mine from that side of Marvel Comics. Even the films have barely scratched the surface of the full potential of Marvel’s cosmic universe. Having a game explore that definitely works on all fronts.

  • ‘Nier Reincarnation’: New English Trailer Released Alongside Western Pre-Registration

‘Nier Reincarnation’: New English Trailer Released Alongside Western Pre-Registration

Yoko Taro‘s remake of Nier Replicant has finally released, which offers those that missed out on the cult classics release a look at a world long before Nier Automata. He has also been busy working on the mobile addition titled Nier Reincarnation, which follows the story of a Girl in White, who is exploring the realm known only as Cage. Alongside the ghost Mama, she tries to unravel the mysteries of this place and uncovers hidden secrets of the franchise’s history.

To kick off the game’s pre-order on iOS and Android, IGN revealed a new trailer showcasing the game with its English dubbing. While trying to pre-register the game via the iOs App store, it also includes the potential release date. It seems that the game might be available around November, which could change depending on how production is going.

The mobile game includes many core members of the Nier development team, such as producer Yosuke Saito and composer Keiichi Okabe. As we can clearly hear from the latest trailer, Okabe‘s work remains as hypnotic as ever, as we enter a new era of the Nier franchise. It Is crazy to think how far the franchise has come considering it was a spin-off from Drakengard‘s joke ending. There was also the reveal that we can expect a Drakengard 3 event in the game, which will bring in its protagonist Zero. Reincarnation might be the game to tie together the loose threads weaved between the various franchises and unravel how it is all connected.

  • First Story Details Teased for ‘Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s First DLC

First Story Details Teased for ‘Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s First DLC

In the recent PlayStation State of Play video, we had a variety of reveals. One of the biggest came at the end in the form of Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade. Alongside the free upgrade to the Playstation 5 version of the game, we also can get our hands on the franchise’s first DLC. The chapter will focus on Wutai’s ninja, Yuffie Kisaragi. The base version of the remake focuses primarily on the Midgar arc of the 1997 game. As such, we haven’t seen all the iconic characters that we’ve come to love. We’d expected we wouldn’t get our first look at Yuffie until the release of the sequel. As we don’t know when that will release, we might get multiple sequels, which take place in the famous city to build up towards the next release. The first teaser gave us a glimpse, but an official tweet final gave us our first details on why Yuffie is in Midgar.

Her search for the ultimate material is a curious reveal. When we meet Yuffie in the original PlayStation game, she is roaming the open world. You can play through the entire game without recruiting her. She is one of two optional characters, so her being an optional paid content is a nice touch. I wonder if Vincent will get the same treatment after the release of the official sequel. Her storyline is all about getting her hands on Materia, as she will even steal it from your team after joining you. So, the question remains what the ultimate material is.

It could be a reference to the White or Black Materia, which is considered the strongest in the game’s lore. They may be using her to set-up the storyline for the sequel while fleshing out her story from the original. The tease at the end of the original teaser included Weiss, who is the antagonist of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7. Yuffie had close ties to that storyline, so we’re seeing more of the compendium getting integrated, or would that be intergraded?

  • Square-Enix Announces Two New ‘Final Fantasy 7’ Mobile Spin-Offs

Square-Enix Announces Two New ‘Final Fantasy 7’ Mobile Spin-Offs

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake franchise is continuing to expand. In the latest PlayStation State of Play, we got a trailer for the first DLC of last year’s remake. It will explore a story that takes place during the Midgar chapter, as Yuffie tries to uncover Shinra’s dark secrets and take them down from within. It looks like Square-Eni wasn’t done with the franchise yet, as they simultaneously revealed two brand new mobile games. Interestingly enough, the titles for these games were leaked two months ago due to trademarks.

The first mobile game is titled Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis. It will be a single-player game that covers the entire franchise’s timeline. It even includes the compilation and designs from the Remake franchise. The gameplay showcases the return of the classic ATB system. It even switches between chibi-versions of the characters and their larger designs. The ending seems to tease a story featuring Zack, which could potentially be tied to the ending of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

As mentioned before, it wasn’t the only mobile game reveal. It looks like they are dipping their toes in third-person shooters as well. Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier will be a Battle Royale game that takes place in Midgar before the events of the original game. You take over the role of a SOLDIER candidate, who will take on other players and some classic enemies from the original game.

The quality of these games is impressive and showcases how far mobile gaming has come. There is a good chance there are some gacha or microtransactions integrated into the game, as is common for mobile games. I might check out The First Soldier game, as it seems like a fun distraction. Ever Crisis would technically count as a remake of the original with how faithful its adaptation seems to be. I am excited to see what else the franchise might have in store for us, as we anxiously wait for the sequel to last year’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

  • Square-Enix Releases 10 Minutes of ‘Nier: Replicant’ Gameplay Footage

Square-Enix Releases 10 Minutes of ‘Nier: Replicant’ Gameplay Footage

After a long wait, we finally got some brand new gameplay footage for the hotly anticipated remake of Nier Replicant. The original got released on the PlayStation 3, but it wasn’t until the sequel Nier Automata put the franchise on the map. After its success, many wanted to revisit the game that started it all. Sadly, it is nier-ly impossible to get your hands on the original copies. There is also the confusing aspect that the Western release was different from the Japanese version. We got a version titled Nier Gestalt, as the studio feared Western players wouldn’t connect with a young Anime character, so he was aged up, and the game released with two different versions. After a long wait, the official Nier Twitter account was nice enough to share 10 minutes of brand new gameplay for the upcoming remake.

    https://twitter.com/NieRGame/status/1360227407488110595

The game looks beautiful, and the revamped combat system certainly seems to take cues from Automata. It makes sense, as Platinum Games’ work on that game elevated its gameplay to a whole new level. The updated graphics also make the game truly shine. It is also our first official look at Kaine, who plays an essential part in the game’s iconic story. I love that they showcase one of the game’s boss battles to highlight how far the game has come from its original release in 2010. The entire franchise is a spin-off of a joke ending from the original Drakengard game. As such, it is canonically tied to that game franchise, which hasn’t seen a new game since 2013’s Drakengard 3. I cannot wait to get my hands on the game once it releases in April, which hopefully might also release alongside the Western release of the mobile game Nier Reincarnation, which is also still awaiting an official release date.

  • Square-Enix Trademarks Teasing ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ Sequel or Spin-Offs

Square-Enix Trademarks Teasing ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ Sequel or Spin-Offs

It’s looking like this week will be dominated by Marvel, as we all anticipate the upcoming release of WandaVision. It seems like it isn’t the only thing happening this week, as Square-Enix has been quite busy as well. They had a big year in 2020. They released a remake of one of their most famous games, Final Fantasy VII, which was only the beginning of its return. The remake only centered on the Midgar arc, which was around four to five hours in the original. Of course, to make it an entire game, they’ve added new details and characters from the expanded compendium. It wasn’t until we saw the ending that we would come to realize that Final Fantasy VII Remake was more than what we may have initially bargained with.

The ending took a very different direction, which left us with many questions. Zack Fair, one of the main characters from the original, somehow managed to change his fate. It kind of implied that he may have a larger role in the future of this new franchise. Well, it seems that there are plans with him, as Square-Enix has just filed trademarks for “The First Soldier” and “Ever Crisis”. They also trademarked a new Shinra Electric Power Company logo, the primary antagonist of the remake.

The first trademark is connected to SEPC’s SOLDIER program that gave Zack and Cloud superhuman abilities. What makes it significant, however, is the first SOLDIER was Sephiroth. So, it may tease that he will have some kind Now, Ever Crisis is rather interesting, as it could tease a spin-off focuses on Zack, just like the prequel Before Crisis did. The new SEPC visual can be closely connected to the ending reveal from Final Fantasy VII Remake. Most of us were focusing on the upcoming sequel, so the potential of spin-offs is surprising. We’ll see if these trademarks might have some ties to the game’s direct sequel, especially with them trademarking new visuals. It is still good to know that some development is happening with the franchise, and I cannot wait for an official reveal of how they are moving forward with this franchise.
