Lucasfilm’s 2024 Streaming Slate Officially Revealed

As Hollywood prepares to slow down for the holiday season, studios have begun rolling out information about their 2024 slates. With so many high-profile brands under its umbrella and its own streaming service, Disney is always one of the busiest studios in the business. Following an extended work stoppage in Hollywood, 2024 won’t be quite as busy as expected for the studio but there’s still quite a bit to look forward to, especially if you’re a Star Wars fan.

Lucasfilm will roll out four Star Wars streaming series on Disney Plus over the course of 2024. While Disney did not reveal release windows, they officially revealed that The Acolyte, Season 3 of The Bad Batch, Season 2 of Tales of the Jedi and Skeleton Crew will hit the streaming service at some point.

Recently, The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi were left off an official release by Disney UK, prompting reports that the two animated series might end up being delayed until 2025. While that’s not the case, it does seem that Season 2 of Andor, one of Lucasfilm’s most well-received Star Wars streaming series, will not release in 2024. Release slates rarely hold true, however, so anything from cancellations to delays to projects not currently listed ending up in 2024 is on the table.

Lucasfilm Leaves a Pair of Animated Series Off of Their 2024 Disney Plus Slate

Since Bob Iger returned to Disney in late 2022, the studio has made some changes to the way it manages Disney Plus. A renewed emphasis has been placed on the quality of the productions being rolled out on the streaming service and in 2024 that will mean fewer projects for some of Disney’s biggest studios. For Lucasfilm, which produces live-action and animated projects for the service, that means two highly anticipated series were left off the initial 2024 release slate.

As it stands now, Lucasfilm will only roll out two live-action Star Wars projects next year (The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew) which means two animated projects, the third and final season of The Bad Batch and the second season of Tales of the Jedi, look to be delayed until 2025.

The first 16 episodes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars spinoff, The Bad Batch, debuted on Disney Plus on Star Wars Day 2021 and were followed by a 16-episode second season in January 2022. Tales of the Jedi, a 6-episode anthological series, was rolled out in October 2022. Both series were created by Lucasfilm’s new Creative Grand Admiral, Dave Filoni, who is also the key creative figure behind the studio’s New Republic Era stories such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka.

Rumors had been making the rounds that new seasons of both series would find their way to Disney Plus in 2024; however, neither were to be found on Disney UK’s official 2024 preview of the streaming service. Given the constant state of flux in programming, it’s still entirely possible one or both of the series end up released at some point in 2024 though, for the time being, it looks like they are simply not part of the plan.

  • SWCE: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Will Return for Season 2

SWCE: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Will Return for Season 2

Star Wars Celebration is the event that keeps on giving, as another piece of news has arrived that Tales of the Jedi is set to receive a second season. The announcement came from its creator Dave Filoni, who has slowly taken over a larger and larger role in supervising the future of the franchise. Not only is he set to direct a film that’ll culminate all the series that spun out of The Mandalorian, but generally continues his work on the animated entries of the franchise.

He jokingly only stated that the animated anthology series “was so fun the first time, I decided to do some more” during the panel on the 15th anniversary of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. There are no details on what the next season will focus on, as the first one consisted of six episodes that split the story between Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku’s early days.

There’s a chance we might get to spend some more time with familiar Jedi from the franchise’s past, but it does seem his focus remains with those from The Clone Wars era. It would be great if they use this anthology series to potentially add some depth to our favorites from the sequel era, especially now that Daisy Ridley is set to return in the near future with a new sequel to the sequel trilogy.

  • REVIEW: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Is The Best Star Wars Animated Show Since Rebels

REVIEW: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Is The Best Star Wars Animated Show Since Rebels

That the Jedi are the good guys in a Galaxy Far, Far Away is Star Wars‘ biggest lie. George Lucas dispelled that in his prequel trilogy. Dave Filoni examined the cracks of the Order in Clone Wars through the eyes of Anakin Skywalker. Rian Johnson brought it full circle in The Last Jedi when a disillusioned Luke Skywalker denounced the Order’s teaching. The streak to paint the Jedi as the galaxy’s most fallible figures continues as Tales of the Jedi puts the spotlight on one of the most underserved characters in the franchise, Count Dooku.

The series, a precisely crafted six-episode anthology from Filoni, is split into two arcs. One explores Dooku’s fall from Jedi Master to Sith apprentice while the other chronicles various points of Ahsoka Tano’s life. Tales of the Jedi, in essence, is a masterclass on storytelling as Filoni compacts much depth and weight in a compact fifteen-minute format. In such a short amount of time, the stories explored evoke a sense of scale that eclipses some of the most important Jedi moments in Star Wars cinema.

Much of that can be credited to the sheer scope of the storytelling. Both Dooku and Ahsoka’s journey span decades, exploring incidents in the far reaches of the galaxy that general audiences have yet to see. Like Lucas before him, Filoni brilliantly draws inspiration from other genres, giving certain episodes a distinct tonal feel. One episode that has Dooku investigating a kidnapping is inspired by mystery thrillers. Another episode that explores Ahsoka’s life in hiding after Order 66 taps into iconic Western tropes.

The centerpiece of Tales of the Jedi is Dooku’s arc. Dooku’s fall from grace has long been a point of interest among fans and the show does a tremendous job of examining his disillusionment with the order. His episodes serve as one of the most straightforward indictments for the Jedi Order, delineating a clear line to where it all went wrong and why it went wrong. Dooku’s arc is tragic, regretful, and most of all, complex as it paints a portrait of a broken man on the brink of defeat. What used to be a character that was stunt-cased for the prequels is now one of the most compelling characters in the franchise.

Ahsoka’s episodes, on the other hand, lack the intrigue of Dooku’s but make up for its familiarity. As one of the best characters in all of Star Wars, it’s always welcome to see Ahsoka’s story expanded, even through narrative minutiae. The opening of the season is her birth and how her tribe discovers her powers while the second is a vignette of her training under Anakin Skywalker. Both offer slice-of-life looks at the Jedi’s formative years. The kicker is her final episode which chronicles her life after Order 66. Without spoiling much, she ends up fighting the most badass Inquisitor ever created.

Tales of the Jedi stands out as the best Star Wars animated series since Rebels. Even as its pacing and episode sequencing feel contrived, it showcases some of the best storytelling this side of the galaxy.

D23: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Gets October Release

It looks like we finally have a release date for the anthology series Tales of the Jedi. The continuation of the animated side of Star Wars ever-growing lore will take the look at different and familiar characters from the franchise’s history and give them a bit more time. We’ll explore the origins of Ahsoka Tano, and Qui-Gon Jin and maybe even find out what led Count Dooku down the right of what turned him evil. It now has received an October 28th release date during the D23 panel by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

SWCA: ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Trailer Description Teases Mace Windu and Revan Look-a-Like

Not only did the Tales of the Jedi panel give the visitors a first look at an episode focused on Ahsoka, but they also got a brand new trailer teasing the various stories that will be included in this anthology series. As shared by our own Hunter Radesi, who is attending the event, it seems that they’ve hinted at a lot of the various storylines that’ll get explored in the animated series.

There are sequences featuring Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, Bail Organa, and even Yaddle. Dooku and Windu are seen fighting side-by-side. There’s a new inquisitor with a Revan-inspired mask, which is white with red markings. Dooku also has a line that seems to reflect one by Anakin from Revenge of the Sith, possibly hinting at his darker turn. We even have Anakin making fun of Ahsoka during training. So, it looks like there will be quite a few episodes that explore different themes and concepts.

After already getting a closer look at the newly confirmed Tales of the Jedi series, we now also received the confirmation that the composer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Kevin Kiner, is going to return for the animated anthology series. It’s not too surprising as the series will be made in the same animation style and its creator Dave Filloni is also heavily involved with the project. The news comes directly from the panel as Hunter Radesi is keeping us updated on the announcements.

SWCA: Description of ‘Tales of the Jedi’s First Ahsoka-Focused Episode

Star Wars Celebration has been filled with surprises, and we even got our first real look at Tales of the Jedi. The new animated series will explore the history of some familiar faces throughout Star Wars‘ long history and our very own Hunter Radesi got the chance to watch an episode from the series. Here’s a description of that footage.

The episode they got to watch was titled “Life and Death.” The episodes seem to be on the shorter side with a length of 15 minutes teased for the episode that was shown and it has a similar style to The Clone Wars. It explored the story of Ahsoka Tano when she was born in a little village. We actually meet her family and there’s a celebration. A year later, she takes her hunting and teaches her lessons on the value of life.

Her mother will be voiced by Janina Gavankar, who many might recognize as Iden Verso from Battlefront II. It seems while they are hunting they get attacked by an animal that is similar to a sabretooth tiger. Her mom was keeping it off long enough for support from the village to arrive. Yet it grabs Ahsoka and brings it to her cave. She manages to communicate with it through the Force so as not to get eaten. She returns o her village riding it and we meet an old lady that proclaims that “Ahsoka is a Jedi.”

While Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen have taken on the live-action roles of Ahsoka and Anakin Skywalker, this is definitely something exciting for fans of the animated series with Dave Filoni‘s heavily involved with the series.
