‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’s Head Writer Malcolm Spellman Teases Bucky’s Future

It has already been some time since Falcon and Winter Soldier ended. Sam Wilson finally took on the mantle of Captain America. Yet, the series also gave us a closer look at Bucky’s inner struggle of finally accepting his place in the world. He was tied down by the list of things he did as the Winter Soldier that he couldn’t find inner peace. It took him the entire season and some tough love from his frenemy that he needs to start amending rather than avenging. Now, the question remains what the future holds for Bucky. Head writer Malcolm Spellman offered a small tease on where this newfound freedom might push him.

If I tell you, then you’re going to ask me what that would be. I think Bucky is free in a way. Even coming out of Wakanda, he still wasn’t totally free. He was freed programming, but I believe Bucky is free now in a way. Look at the way he smiled at the end; he got a family, he’s invited to the cook-out, as we say in the community. He is free in a way that I think we haven’t seen, and that leads to a lot of possibilities for him.

The way Spellman talks about Bucky’s freedom does hint at there being some potential plans for the character. Some time ago, he confirmed that we only have seen a glimmer of what Marvel Studios is working on and a Winter Soldier-focused story could be one of them. Almost half a year ago, our very own Charles Murphys uncovered that a Nomad project was being developed, which could be the perfect continuation for the character. It would also fit the description of how Bucky is free moving forward. He may also make an appearance in the newly announced Captain America 4, which Spellman is writing. At this point, anything is possible and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for Sebastian Stan and his character.

  • ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ May Be The Last Time We See The Winter Soldier

‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ May Be The Last Time We See The Winter Soldier

The ending of Falcon and the Winter Soldier came with a new name, as Sam Wilson embraced his role as Captain America. However, it seemed that Bucky Barnes may have still stuck to his Winter Soldiers moniker after finally making amends. Well, it seems that the end title might be a bit misleading. The show’s head writer, Malcolm Spellman, revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com that it isn’t representing Bucky’s state of mind, as he was finally to move on from the dark past. They also seem to hint at a new direction for the character:

I think Bucky enters this thing truly believing he is kind of the Winter Soldier no matter what anyone says. By the end, he has the moment with the old man, but more importantly, nobody has caught this… I’ve been saying it all day. In the scene with the Flag-Smashers in Episode 6, when one of those people gets out of that van and thanks Bucky, that’s his first time being a hero. So by the end of this series, Bucky is emerging as having shed the burden of the Winter Soldier. He has found a new family, ironically, it’s a Black family in Louisiana, you know what I’m saying? And he has tasted being a hero for the first time. And I think he’s now free to become something amazing.

The way he phrases it may hint at a new direction for Bucky. His title as Winter Soldier could end with this series. In the comics, he carried on with the title even as he became a hero and returned to it after his time as Captain America. Our very own Lizzie Hill theorized that he may be the focus of the potential Nomad project. Sebastian Stan has the star power to lead his own project. So, it would only really be a matter of time before he gets a new project. Now that Hawkeye already got a Disney+ spin-off with Echo and Captain America 4 has been confirmed, we might hopefully get an announcement for a post Winter Soldier story.

  • ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’: Sebastian Stan Doesn’t Know What’s Next for Bucky

‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’: Sebastian Stan Doesn’t Know What’s Next for Bucky

The final act of Season 1 of Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier kicks off this Friday with an hour-long 5th episode that will begin to wrap up the season-long arcs of Sam, Bucky, John Walker, the Flag-Smashers and more. The series has been incredibly popular with fans and, since the beginning, has been lauded for the character development of its leads. Sebastian Stan, who’s been a part of the MCU for over a decade, has been given a chance to show a side of his character (and the range of his own abilities) that we haven’t previously seen and already has fans hoping for more. As it turns out, Stan is hoping for more as well, but when asked in an interview with Collider if he had discussed a second season of the series with Marvel Studios One-Above-All Kevin Feige, Stan had this to say:

No, we have not, and I’ll tell you that honestly, we have not. As per usual, I don’t quite know what the next step is. We never really do. Maybe some people do, maybe [Robert] Downey [Jr.] used to know, I don’t know. I got on the phone with him just to catch up, and I was saying to him, ‘Dude, you could fucking tell me to go swim under[water], I’ll do anything.’ It doesn’t matter. Or if this is it, my heart is just as big.

As we head towards the conclusion of Season 1, a few things feel pretty inevitable, but Bucky’s arc doesn’t really seem to feel like one of them. Fans are expecting Sam to take up the mantle of Captain America, for John Walker to become U.S. Agent and for a few other loose ends to be tied up, but it’s still unclear where Bucky’s road will take him once this series wraps. Has he burned bridges with Wakanda or will he be welcomed back as the White Wolf? Will he continue to work through his notebook to make amends for his actions as the Winter Solider? Could he and Sam find common ground as parters? And is Zemo willing to let him do any of those things with his plan to wipe Super Soldiers off the planet? With only 2 episodes left, we’ll get answers sooner than later.
