Murphy’s Law Review: ‘THE BOYS’ 2.01: “The Big Ride”

Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s series The Boys has landed on the streaming service. The first season was a smash hit (is that a reference to A-Train killing Hughie’s girlfriend?) and left a lot of questions to be answered. How well did the first episode of the sophomore season address those questions? Read on the find my verdict…

    The Opening Statement

Thought Season 2’s opening scenes are nowhere near as jarring as what we got in Season 1, they do a nice job of bridging the gap. As new series regular Giancarlo Esposito’s Stan Edgar, who we met briefly in Season 1, asserts control over the military operations of the Seven, Black Noir takes care of one of last season’s loose ends: the super terrorist Naqib. We’re also reminded of the propaganda machine that is Vaught as Homelander and Starlight put on what amounts to a soap opera performance at the funeral of the Seven’s fallen member, Translucent. The nationally televised funeral is watched by Hughie, serving to remind us not only that he’s the one who took out Translucent, but symbolically that he is the “outsider” and our eyes and ears in this f-ed up world.

    The Testimony

The episode does a nice job of reintroducing the returning characters, reminding us of not only of where they left off in Season 1 but also setting up where they’re headed in Season 2’s first arc. Hughie and Starlight’s awkward reunion reminds us that for all his good intentions, Hughie can’t seem to stop making a mess of things. Homelander’s efforts to establish control at Vaught are met with several reminders of psychopathic personality (he warms up some breast milk, assaults and insults a blind superhero and drops in unexpectedly to see his child). However, his pursuit of power is pissed on when a new hero, Stormfront, is added to the Seven without his knowledge; furthermore, when he approaches Edgar in hopes of intimidating him into falling in line, the very human Edgar doesn’t flinch, reminding Homelander just how “ordinary” he is.

We also catch up with the rest of The Boys who have found themselves wanted as associates of Billy Butcher. The series makes full use of dramatic irony around the death of Elisabeth Shue’s Madelyn Stillwell to set up an interesting complication: though we know Homelander killed her, Butcher’s attempt to kill himself and Homelander by detonating the explosives have framed him as Stillwell’s murderer, making him and The Boys a target of not just the Seven but the general public as well. With Butcher MIA, Hughie tries to establish himself as the group’s new leader to no avail. Despite their fugitive status, they stumble onto something major (a super terrorist has been smuggled into the United States) and seek out the aid of the CIA’s Deputy Director, Susan Raynor. Just as it seems they’re headed for some respite, we’re reminded that in this world, nobody is safe when Raynor’s head explodes sending The Boys scrambling. Just when it looks like it’s time to give up, Butcher comes storming back on the scene.

The deconstruction of who Erin Moriarty’s Starlight thought she was continues as well. Moriarty delivers some great lines about the absence of God as she blackmails a an old (and unsurprisingly disturbing) friend into stealing some Compound V so that she and Hughie can expose Vaught. Her continued journey into hell weighs heavily on Hughie though Starlight herself believes she’s serving the greater good. That said, we’re reminded by a brief glimpse at A-Train, that Starlight can become a target at any time.

    The Verdict

The Boys boss shares new look at characters in season 2

As was often the case in Season 1, this episode juggled several story lines and put us in touch with well over a dozen different characters, all of whom are going to play a major part in this season. The parallel arcs set up between Anthony Starr’s Homelander and Jack Quaid’s Hughie were well done. Despite the pair being on opposite ends of the powered spectrum, both of them make failed efforts to assert themselves as the alpha. Of course despite that similarity, they otherwise couldn’t be any different: where Hughie continues to try to do what he perceives to be the right thing, no matter the collateral damage, Homelander continues to be a prick of the highest order without a shred of goodness to spare. The relationship between these two characters, who never share a scene, continues to be fascinating. Moriarty continues to steal the show and though he was left out of the conversation above, we are treated to a few scenes with Chace Crawford’s the Deep as a reminder of just how far from grace these characters can fall. Given the places the once clear conscience of Starlight has gone, the Deep serves as a pretty stark warning of what might be in store.

As an opening act for what’s expected to be another wild ride, Episode 1 did just find. Murphy’s Law rules in favor of Episode 1, giving it a solid 8 out of 10 machete hacks to the arm.

  • Warner Bros. CEO Committed to a Theatrical Release of ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’

Warner Bros. CEO Committed to a Theatrical Release of ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’

As studio productions restart and movie theaters start to open around in the world, the chaos of COVID-19 pandemic refuses to yield to the order trying to be reestablished. Today’s news that Robert Pattinson, the star of WB’s The Batman, tested positive just days after production got up and running again served as a stark reminder that while we’re all ready for the virus to go away, it’s not ready to relinquish its hold just yet. WB’s Tenet debuted in theaters last weekend and now, in the first intra-COVID box office battle, Disney’s Mulan will pilot a new strategy of opening in theaters where they’re open and on Disney Plus where they are not. While these two films go to bat, Wonder Woman 1984 is on deck after having shuffled its release date several times. While fans have wondered if the ongoing pandemic would push the sequel into homes given the relatively low number of open theaters. According to WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff, that’s not going to be the case.

In an interview with THR, Sarnoff indicated that the studio currently has no plans to release the Gal Gadot sequel on PVOD if theaters aren’t widely open ahead of its current October release date. When asked if the film might move to the December slot currently held by Dune if the status quo doesn’t change, Sarnoff had this to say:

We are still figuring out the strategy for all of our movies. We have quite a lot done. Obviously, Wonder Woman 1984 is up next. For now, it is where it is. Like I said earlier, certain movies deserve to be on the big screen. My belief is Wonder Woman is one of those.

And so the studio remains committed to making sure the film, which recently debuted a new trailer at FanDome, gets a wide theatrical release, allowing fans to revel in the full glory of the Patty Jenkins helmed film. • Live-Action ‘SILK’ Series in Development by Sony

Live-Action ‘SILK’ Series in Development by Sony

Last year it was revealed that Sony hoped to join into the superhero series game by signing the creative duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller to a 5-year deal to develop series based on their library of Spider-Man characters. It’s been all quiet on that front since…until now. According to Variety, Lord and Miller have their first project lined up in a live-action series focusing on the character Silk.

First appearing in 2014, Silk stepped unto Spidey’s life in a major way when his famous origin story was retconned to include a second bite victim for the radioactive spider. Cindy Moon, a high school student attending the same demonstration as Parker, was bitten in the ankle by the spider just moments after it bit Parker. Moon developed her own series of super powers but remained hidden in a bunker for 13 years until just before the “Spider-Verse” event.

Lord and Miller are working with Korean-American writer Lauren Moon to develop the project which is reportedly being pursued by Amazon. No word yet on a potential timeline for release.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Set to Film in November

EXCLUSIVE: ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Set to Film in November

The production engine at Marvel Studios is starting back up and running and it’s about to shift into high gear. Murphy’s Multiverse has learned at production on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness will begin in the UK in November. Originally scheduled to film in the Spring, production never got off the ground due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was previously assumed that cameras wouldn’t roll on the sequel until 2021 but we have confirmed that production is now just 2 months away.

The potential implications of this are as exciting as the news itself. The sequel was twice a part of the COVID slate shuffle, moving first from its original May 7, 2021 release to November 5, 2021 before eventually landing on March 25, 2022 when the untitled Spider-Man sequel was moved into November. With Spidey 3 being pushed into December and production on Doctor Strange 2 about to get going, it is now POSSIBLE that we could see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme slide back into that November 2021 window!

Scott Derrickson was originally back to helm the sequel before stepping down. At that point, Marvel Studios turned to Raimi as their point man to introduce the true multiverse to the MCU. The COVID-related delay may have been a blessing in disguise for the studio, giving Raimi and writer Michael Waldron, who was brought on in February to rewrite the script, time to find their creative groove.

Other signs, including some casting videos, have pointed to an imminent start of production for the film which is expected to introduce multiversal hero America Chavez, Jericho Drumm and Clea to the MCU. With the news that production will kick off soon, casting news is sure to follow.

Stay tuned as this story develops.

  • ‘ANT-MAN 3’ Slated for 2022

    ‘ANT-MAN 3’ Slated for 2022

Earlier this year, Ant-Man 3 seemed to slide down the list of upcoming Marvel Studios films as it took on a new writer in Jeff Loveness. Other films appeared to cut in line and the COVID shuffle of Marvel’s slate didn’t include a release date for the threequel. According to a new report, the film might just make a 2022 release after all!

Yahoo Entertainment interviewed director Peyton Reed and dropped this little nugget in the piece:

It’s worth noting that this is not a direct quote from Reed or anyone at Marvel Studios, but it is the first indicator we have had about a potential date for the film. You should all know by now that in the age of COVID, no release date is safe, but this is still encouraging news. We recently shared the information that production on the project had been moved from “early 2021” to June which, given the rumored size and scope of the film, could have it ready for a Summer 2022 release!

VIDEO: ‘BLACK WIDOW’ Trailer Rereleased with ‘NEW MUTANTS’

After the strangest journey ever, New Mutants finally landed in theaters this weekend. Theater goers will also get an extra bonus: another look at the final trailer for Marvel Studios upcoming film, Black Widow!

    https://youtu.be/dsSaN57-87w

While there appears just a snippet of new footage in the trailer, it has been cut to include the film’s November release date and, as someone pointed out in our Discord server last night, it does not state “ONLY IN THEATERS” as some other recent trailers have! We’ll have to wait and see what this means for any potential home release for the film.

Black Widow will be in theaters November 6, 2020.

‘A Quiet Place’ Writers’ Sci-Fi Thriller Details Revealed

A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have teamed up with Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi for a sci-fi thriller titled Zoic.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Beck and Woods were developing a script with Raimi and Azizi producing, but no details were made available. We have learned that Zoic, which is casting now and aiming for a mid-November start of production in New Orleans, will see an astronaut make his way to an unknown planet where he soon finds he is not alone.

Beck and Woods will direct the project based off their own, original screenplay.

  • ‘THE SUICIDE SQUAD’: Who is Javelin

‘THE SUICIDE SQUAD’: Who is Javelin

With the roster for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad stacked with wildly disparate and relatively unknown DC Comics villains, we thought it would be great to get to know each of them in 400 words or less. Don’t get too attached after reading though, because there’s a good bet most of them won’t be around for the sequel. It’s time to meet and greet the members of Task Force X!

Suicide Squad 2 Characters Confirmed By Sequel Set Photos

A villain whose costume and weapon cleverly took advantage of Hal Jordan’s power ring’s inability to have an impact on anything yellow, Javelin has been a fly in the ointment of DC Comics heroes since first appearing in 1984’s Green Lantern #173. A world-class athlete who inexplicably chose a life of crime over the mundane lifestyle of an Olympic athlete (you should look into it; Olympians are not well-paid despite being national heroes), Javelin spent a lot of time being a punching bag for Jordan’s Green Lantern, Green Arrow and even Supergirl.

Javelin did a few tours with Task Force X and none of them ended particularly well. Despite his arsenal of “trick” javelins (yep, that’s a thing and it’s even weirder than trick arrows), the poor bastard was dealt some pretty gruesome hands by the writers at DC Comics during his time on Suicide Squad.

The outlandish German actor/musician/dancer/overachiever Flula Borg, probably best known for either his role in Pitch Perfect 2 or the YouTube video where he breaks down the strangeness of a common insult, will be bringing Javelin to life…for however long that is. The character is sporting an exact replica of his comic book costume and looks every bit as ridiculous on screen as he did in the pages of the books. Expect Borg to steal some scenes and make an impact in the role.

    Murphy’s Multiverse Dead Pool Predictions

Predicted Chances of Survival: OMG, are you serious? You have a guy running around looking like that with nothing but a javelin or javelins? This guy is straight up fodder and has ZERO chance of moving on past this film. Hell, I’d be amazed if he made if past 3 minutes of screen time.

Predicted Manner of Death: Javelin has had his share of bad deaths in the comics having been run over and also having been impaled by one of his own projectiles. I say, is it too much to ask for both? Let’s have him survive getting stuck with his own javelin only to then be trucked by an army vehicle, putting him out of his misery.

RIP Javelin, we hardly knew ya.

  • ‘THE SUICIDE SQUAD’: Who is Savant?

‘THE SUICIDE SQUAD’: Who is Savant?

With the roster for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad stacked with wildly disparate and relatively unknown DC Comics villains, we thought it would be great to get to know each of them in 400 words or less. Don’t get too attached after reading though, because there’s a good bet most of them won’t be around for the sequel. It’s time to meet and greet the members of Task Force X!

Savant (DC Comics) - Alchetron, The Free Social Encyclopedia

A wealthy genius whose memories become tangled in time, Savant first appeared in 2003’s Birds of Prey #56. Initially a Gotham City vigilante whose run in with Batman forced him into a career move, Brian Durlin decided to use his skills behind the keyboard to dig up information and become a big time blackmailer who set his sights on the big prize: the true identity of the Batman! Savant’s plan to uncover the name of the man behind the cowl saw him tangle with the Birds of Prey, holding Black Canary hostage in hopes that Barbara Gordan would spill the beans. Instead, she spilled some of his blood but rather than throw him away, Babs saw a pathway to redemption for Durlin and brought him on board the team in hopes that his impressive tech skills would help them out.

Savant’s inability to totally divorce himself from his criminal ways found him going back and forth between two worlds and his behavior at the intersection of those two worlds led to him being dismissed from the BoP more than once. Having developed feelings for Barbara, however, he kept coming back in hopes of making it work. That never worked out for him and he never quite got along with Batman either, but Savant never seemed to be a truly evil character. When DC rebooted their universe in 2011, Savant was part of Amanda Waller’s new Task Force X whose job was to hunt down Suicide Squad mainstay, Harley Quinn.

Savant will be brought to life on the big screen by James Gunn’s BFF for life, the great Michael Rooker. Rooker, like Dastmalchian, is no stranger to superhero or comic book fare having starred as Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn’s dark superhero comedy, Super, and The Walking Dead. Rooker has also been in pretty much everything Gunn has ever made.

    Murphy’s Multiverse Dead Pool Predictions

Predicted Chances of Survival: if negative numbers worked in percentages, I’d go lower than 0.

Predicted Manner of Death: something incredibly horrific. Given Gunn’s relationship with Rooker, I’m guessing this death will be the most absurd of them all. Let’s go with a particularly bad case of being cut in half.

    RIP Savant
