“Lift Me Up” from the ‘Wakanda Forever’ Soundtrack Hitting Friday

After weeks of guessing, Marvel Studios has officially announced that Rihanna will have the lead single off the soundtrack to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The single, titled “Lift Me Up,” is said to have been written as a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman. It was written by Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Ryan Coogler and produced by Göransson.

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

    Tems

The soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By – will be available on Nov. 4th through Roc Nation Records/Def Jam Recordings/Hollywood Records. It’s being produced by Coogler, Göransson, Archie Davis and Dave Jordan. While the original score, composed and produced by Göransson, will hit on Nov. 11th through Hollywood Records.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Tenoch Huerta, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livinalli. It’s set to hit theaters on Nov. 11th. Tickets are available now.

  • ‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

HBO Max is looking to redevelop its previously announced Green Lantern series. The show, which hailed from producer Greg Berlanti and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, was originally set to star Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the respective Green Lanterns. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will instead turn the focus over to John Stewart, one of DC’s first black superheroes.

Grahame-Smith has since departed the project after turning in eight scripts for the original series pitch. He was meant to serve as the showrunner on the project but ultimately chose to leave following the regime changes at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics. A new showrunner has yet to be revealed. The decision to redevelop the series was reportedly made after Walter Hamada‘s recent exit, as prior to his exit, the use of John Stewart was said to be off-limits.

With the series being overhauled, only Berlanti and his banner, Berlanti Productions, remain attached through Warner Bros. Television. Per THR, Marc Guggenheim, who was originally involved with the series, left before the series was initially retooled. It is of note that this overhaul of the series does not stem from the massive changes underway at DC and DC Studios as James Gunn and Peter Safran do not begin their new jobs until Nov. 1st.

The Green Lantern series is now back in early development and is expected to be developed at a slower pace than the original series, which was being fast-tracked last year.

  • REVIEW: ‘Nope’ Blu-Ray

    REVIEW: ‘Nope’ Blu-Ray

Jordan Peele’s latest film, Nope, is officially out on Blu-Ray and DVD today. To celebrate the movie’s home release, we were provided a Blu-Ray copy of Nope in advance for review. With that in mind, we take a closer look at the extras included on the Nope Blu-Ray and determine if the film is worth picking up.

There’s no denying Peele’s talent – both as a filmmaker and actor. He has a unique vision and each of his films brings something new. While Nope isn’t as strong as his prior efforts, Get Out and Us, it’s still a hell of a ride that audiences will thoroughly enjoy. For that reason alone, Nope is surely worth picking up. Nothing will beat experiencing this one on a huge screen with an audience, but even at home, Nope is still a well-crafted film worthy of repeat viewings.

While a good movie, the extras, unfortunately, don’t really offer much. For fans, deleted scenes are often a huge selling point, because they’re eager to see what had to be cut. Sometimes, those deleted scenes are great. In this case, though, it’s clear they were cut for a reason. Not a single one would’ve added anything special to Nope; watching them, you can understand why they were cut because they ultimately would’ve halted the story’s progression. So, in this instance, there’s no reason to pick up a physical copy of Nope for deleted scenes. And even the gag scenes are pretty boring. They’re short, and honestly, lack any real charm or humor. There’s simply not much there, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But the two usual things fans look forward to with home releases just lack any importance here.

What does prove to be a selling point for Nope, however, is the inclusion of Shadows: The Making of Nope. This behind-the-scenes feature that includes Peele, as well as his leading cast, is a pretty great exploration of the film and how it was made. Getting a deep dive into Peele’s world and the movie itself is fascinating. Two other featurettes included on the Blu-Ray are Call Him Jean Jacket and Mystery Man of the Muybridge also prove to be worthy of a view. While not as intriguing as Shadows, both featurettes are entertaining in their own right.

In the end, while the Blu-Ray doesn’t offer much in the way of bonus features, there’s still plenty of reason to pick up a copy of Nope on Blu-Ray. With stellar performances by both Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya, Nope on Blu-Ray is still worth picking up. After all, it’s not often a film this ambitious, weird, and thrilling hits.

  • Disney+ Nabs ‘Doctor Who’ Streaming Rights

Disney+ Nabs ‘Doctor Who’ Streaming Rights

Disney+ has landed the streaming rights for the BBC series, Doctor Who, in a landmark deal. The news was revealed on Tuesday by the upcoming Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. Under the new deal, Disney+ will exclusively stream all upcoming seasons of the show outside of the U.K. and Ireland, where they will remain with the BBC. Russell T. Davies, who returns as showrunner for the forthcoming season, expressed excitement over the new deal.

“I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

    Davies

Regarding the new deal, Alisa Bowen, the president of Disney+, called it a great opportunity to bring the beloved series to a new generation. “We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world,” she said. “The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalog of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling.”

Doctor Who first launched in 1963 and ran until 1989. The classic series was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston taking on the role of the ninth Doctor with Russell T Davies on board as showrunner. The revival launched a new generation of Doctor Who fans and brought with it the first female Doctor thanks to Jodie Whittaker‘s thirteenth Doctor.

The first episodes of Doctor Who to air under the new partnership are expected to debut in November 2023, which will coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary. Gatwa will take on the role of the Doctor next, following the short return of David Tennant as the Doctor for three specials.

  • Henry Cavill Confirms His Return as Superman

Henry Cavill Confirms His Return as Superman

Henry Cavill is officially back. On Monday morning, the actor took to social media to confirm his return as Superman. He posted a video for his fans along with the caption, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded. #Superman.”

In the video, which can be seen below, Cavill says he wanted to make his return official. “I wanted to make it official — I am back as Superman,” he says to the camera. The actor thanked his fans saying, “Thank you for your support and for your patience.”

While a new Superman film hasn’t officially been announced by Warner Bros. Discovery, it is thought the studio wants at least one more Superman film with Cavill in the role. (Reports even suggested the studio had potential directors in mind for the project.) It would mark the actor’s second solo outing as the character after 2013’s Man of Steel. Since then, he’s appeared in films such as Batman v Superman and the poorly-received Justice League. Ahead of his return as Superman for Black Adam, Cavill had discussed his hopes of donning the cape once again, but it seemed as though the studio had other plans.

With Walter Hamada officially gone, though, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson having fought for his return, it seems Cavill’s future as Superman is brighter than ever.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Opens to $67 Million Domestically

‘Black Adam’ Opens to $67 Million Domestically

As expected, Black Adam took the top spot at the box office this weekend. The DC flick earned $67 million at the domestic box office. That’s enough for Black Adam to mark the biggest opening of leading man Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s career – a title previously held by the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw at $60 million.

Overseas, the movie seems to have done slightly better. Black Adam is said to have earned $73 million from 77 international markets. That would be the film’s opening haul for the weekend to $140 million. This number includes $6.1 million from the United Kingdom, $5.3 million from Mexico and $4.9 million from Brazil. The film’s worldwide opening is a bit higher than initial estimates which had it eyeing a $135 million worldwide.

Unfortunately, though, Black Adam still has a hill to climb. With a production budget rumored to be between $195 million to $200 million, Black Adam will need legs in the coming weeks. The film currently has a rotten rating of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and reactions from fans have been incredibly mixed. Next weekend will see the release of the horror film, Prey for the Devil, which could easily bite into Black Adam‘s box office haul.

  • REVIEW: ‘Dark Sanctum’ Podcast

    REVIEW: ‘Dark Sanctum’ Podcast

The Dark Sanctum podcast consists of seven episodes. Rather than doing an overall series review, we will review each individual episode.

Episode 1, “Requiem for a Traveler:” When the episode starts, it’s hard to get a true sense as to what is going on. It feels as though the main character is experiencing a nightmare that is soon interrupted when he wakes up. But this story is far from the typical night terrors story. After a few moments, as the story begins to find its footing, it becomes clear there’s a more terrifying aspect to this man’s night terror. It’s wonderfully thrilling but could’ve benefited from about five to ten more minutes. The voice acting is great – when it comes to the two leads, that is – but some of the other actors are notably weak. Thankfully, a couple minor hiccups regarding the cast don’t impact the overall spookiness of the story being told.

Episode 2, “Detour:” Perhaps one of the stronger episodes of the podcast. “Detour” feels like a story ripped from the headlines. The acting in this episode particularly is top notch. The way the voice actors perfectly showcase emotion ultimately drives the story forward and sells the horror aspect of it all. The pain and fear are evident in the actor’s voice. There’s nothing necessarily new about “Detour,” and yet, it’s hard not to keep listening. It’s almost reminiscent of an episode of Criminal Minds, just with a bit more horror injected into the story. It’s haunting and terrifying and incredibly messed up.

Episode 3, “BESS:” The weakest episode of the bunch. It’s not that “BESS” is necessarily bad. It’s just not… good. While the episode does have creepy moments, the voice acting fails to truly capture the right emotion. Given that it’s all of twenty-three minutes in length, “BESS” feels incredibly long. Exploring the depths people will go to in order to connect with a loved one that has passed is a fascinating concept… when handled properly. In this case, though, none of the elements truly come together for anything more than a few jump scares. It’s frustrating.

Episode 4, “Here Lies:” **Please note that this episode does include sexual assault.** It wouldn’t be a horror series if there wasn’t a zombie story. Enter “Here Lies.” Is it anything special? Absolutely not. Is it captivating? Yes, the voice acting is so well done that it’s hard not to be drawn into this horrific story. Fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead adaptation will enjoy “Here Lies” because it’s not merely a zombie story. It’s a story about survival and loss and grief. It’s one of the podcast’s better episodes and despite its short runtime of approximately twenty-three minutes, the story feels complete.

Episode 5, “Rose:” At eleven minutes, “Rose” is one of the short episodes. It’s also one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the podcast. A story about losing a child doesn’t seem like one that could be enjoyable. And at times, it’s not. It can be a hard listen, but the writing is well done, as is the acting. The only issue with “Rose” is that just as it’s becoming interesting, the story ends. There’s so much potential here that it’s utterly frustrating that the creatives decided to cut it short. Had it not been for what feels like a rushed ending, this one could’ve been the best episode out of the seven.

Episode 6, “Damned:” One of the more disturbing stories. Every family has secrets, sometimes those secrets can be deadly. In “Damned,” we come upon a man repenting for what he has done, although we don’t quite know exactly what crime against humanity he committed. As the story moves forward, though, and we soon meet his daughter, the story becomes a lot clearer and beyond messed up. This one is more horrifying than it is scary. There are decisions made in “Damned” that are outright disturbing, but the story itself isn’t scary. The question is… is the episode good? That remains blurry. Like with “Rose,” this story feels rushed. It has a more defined ending, of course, and it’s a tough one to swallow. Had there been maybe five more minutes, though, “Damned” could’ve truly exceled.

Episode 7, “Extraordinary Experience:” Easily the most heartwarming episode of the lot. It’s also the most realistic of the lot. “Extraordinary Experience” is a story about a mother and her son. It’s not all that spooky. It’s more supernatural than anything, honestly. What’s surprising is that the story is far from extraordinary. It’s pretty simple overall, but it’s so well-written and the acting is great. Of the episodes, this is perhaps the easier to visualize, too. It does feel like an odd inclusion in this series, especially given its a season (?) ender, but it’s still an enjoyable listen.

Overall: Dark Sanctum is a short podcast that, while not exactly a new spin on horror, is a Halloween treat. It’s creepy, the stories are varied, and the writing is actually pretty decent. Perhaps the only issue to note is that each story could’ve used a bit more time to be more effective. Those that fans of novellas and their short length will easily devour Dark Sanctum. Fans that enjoy horror movies or even true crime podcasts should definitely give this podcast a chance.

All seven episodes of Dark Sanctum are not available through Wondery+.

  • Kurt Johnstad to Pen ‘Prophet’ Adaptation

Kurt Johnstad to Pen ‘Prophet’ Adaptation

Studio8 has set Kurt Johnstad to pen the screenplay for its adaptation of the Image Comics title, Prophet. The film is based on the comic book title of the same name by Rob Liefeld, who co-created the Marvel Comics character Deadpool. The news was announced on Friday by The Hollywood Reporter. The film is set to star Jake Gyllenhaal with Extraction filmmaker Sam Hargrave on board to direct.

Johnstad takes over for writer Marc Guggenheim who wrote the original draft of the screenplay. Johnstad is perhaps best known for writing the Zack Snyder film adaption of 300, which was based on the Frank Miller comic series. He also wrote the screenplay for the adaptation of The Coldest City titled Atomic Blonde. His most recent project was Snyder’s science-fiction epic, Rebel Moon, which is now in production.

In the original comics, Prophet centered on John Prophet, a man who is conscripted by Germans near the end of World War II and soon finds himself subjected to scientific experiments that gave him superhuman strength. In the movie, though, it’ll focus on “a man who volunteers for a German experiment near the end of World War II in order to feed his family.” As of now, Prophet does not have a release date.
