‘Paper Girls’ Canceled After One Season

The Paper Girls will not live to ride another day.

Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled Paper Girls after a single season. The series was an adaptation of the comic of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. The cancellation comes eight weeks after the show’s eighth and final episode debuted on Prime Video.

According to Deadline, Paper Girls failed to bring in the necessary views to receive a second season. While the season received a 90% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it failed to connect with general audiences. Following the show’s premiere on July 29th, it failed to make Nielsen’s top 10 for original streaming rankings over those three weeks. Legendary Television, who produced the series, is seeking to shop the series as it feels it could tap into the market that Euphoria and Sex Lives of College Girls have successfully tapped into.

The Prime Video adaptation starred Sofia Rosinksy, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Fina Strazza and Ali Wong. It told the story of four young girls who, while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers. Christopher C. Rogers,  Stephany Folsom, Christopher Cantwell, Vaughan, Chiang, Steven Prinz, and Plan B executive produced the series. Folsom originally developed the series alongside Rogers, but ultimately left the project during production leaving Rogers as the sole showrunner.

  • Zach Gilford Boards ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival

Zach Gilford Boards ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival

The Paramount+ revival of Criminal Minds has a new name and a new actor. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Zach Gilford has joined the series in a key recurring role. He’ll play Elias Voit, an analyst for a cyber-security firm who has a dark side and an obsession with death. More interestingly, though, the series has received a new name. The revival is now titled Criminal Minds: Evolution.

The actor is set to join the previously confirmed returning cast of Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. Not returning for the revival are Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney, with the latter currently starring on Prime Video’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time.

While the revival is bringing back much of its core cast, the series is making one major change. In the past, Criminal Minds saw the team solve the case usually by the episode’s end. In the revival, though, the series will take a more serialized approach. Per the logline, Evolution will see the team “come up against their greatest threat yet, an UnSub who has used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers. As the world opens back up and the network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time.”

Gilford is perhaps best known for his work on shows such as Friday Night Lights, Good Girls and Midnight Mass. The actor has also appeared in films like The Purge: Anarchy and Devil’s Due. Next up for Gilford are the Netflix series The Midnight Club and Mike Flanagan‘s The Fall of the House of Usher.

Criminal Minds: Evolution hails from showrunner Erica Messer, who worked on the original hit series. Production on the revival is currently underway.

  • ‘Barbarian’ Looking to Top the Weekend Box Office

‘Barbarian’ Looking to Top the Weekend Box Office

Barbarian is looking to scare up some business at the box office this weekend.

The Hollywood Reporter reports the horror film took in $850k from Thursday previews. It is currently on track to take the top spot at the box office with $5 million to $6 million this weekend. The 20th Century Studios and New Regency flick, which is rated R, currently has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 71 reviews.

While $5 million isn’t a notable return in box instances, September tends to be a quiet box office month. Outside of Top Gun: Maverick, which continues to exceed expectations, Barbarian has little competition. The only other big release this weekend is Bollywood pic Bramastra Part 1: Shiva, which took in $700k from Thursday previews. Estimates have that film on track for a $4 million weekend as it expands into 810 North American theaters. The film is set to have the biggest ever IMAX release for a Bollywood film.

The only other large release for September will be Don’t Worry Darling, set to open later this month. The Warner Bros. Discovery flick, however, has been at the center of controversy as of late, and that could end up hurting its box office performance.

Barbarian is now playing in theaters. Check out our review of Barbarian by heading here.

  • Peyton List on Season 5 of ‘Cobra Kai’ and Growing with the Show

Peyton List on Season 5 of ‘Cobra Kai’ and Growing with the Show

Ahead of Cobra Kai‘s fifth season, leading lady Peyton List sat down with the folks at Variety to discuss the show’s latest season and what it has been like growing up on the hit Netflix drama. The fifth season of Cobra Kai is the biggest season yet with growing families, bigger risks, and crazier fights, and no one is more surprised than List that Season 5 managed to outdo Season 4.

While talking to Variety, the actress explained that she was sure Season 5 would be more relaxed than the prior seasons. But that was far from the case, especially for the original cast of the Karate Kid films. “With the All Valley tournament, I thought, “Season 5 is going to be a lot more relaxed on the fighting. I’m probably not going to be with stunts at all.” And then of course the writers just completely turned that around. Especially for the big guys, the older guys, there are just some intense fights. And so many returns of characters from the past that we haven’t seen that are very surprising.”

List joined the cast of Cobra Kai during the show’s second season, and she’s been a mainstay ever since. As the show has gone on, though, the actors (including List) have continued to grow and age, while the series has seemingly kept them at the same age/grade. When asked how much longer she feels she could keep playing Tory, List didn’t seem eager to leave the role behind but she did seem ready to see the show’s young cast grow.

When we first started, Xolo was still in high school and a couple of the other kids were still in high school, but now all of us are basically out of college. That’s one that I’m really curious about. With the writers I’m like, “What grade are we in now? What semester are we in?” We’re just taking it season by season, but we all look so drastically different each season. I have no idea. I don’t know what they’re gonna do. I would say by next season we graduate, but I don’t know if they would take it past that.

    List

It remains to be seen how many seasons the writers have planned or what the end game will be for the young cast. Previous interviews suggested Season 6 could be the final season, but with how Season 5 ends, it’s clear there’s still plenty of story left in the tank just waiting to be told.

Season 5 of Cobra Kai is now streaming on Netflix. If you haven’t already, you can check out our review by heading over here.

  • ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ to End with Season Six

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ to End with Season Six

Hulu has renewed The Handmaid’s Tale for one more season.

The streaming service unveiled the news on Thursday evening, posting a video across its social media platforms of the cast confirming the news. The renewal comes as Season 5 is slated to debut on Sept. 14th.

The series is based on the iconic book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The book told the story of a handmaid named Offred. After environmental disasters and declining birthrates result in a Second American Civil War, the Republic of Gilead rises to power and enslaves fertile women to bear children for those in power. Critically acclaimed actress Elisabeth Moss has played the role of Offred/June since the show’s debut.

While The Handmaid’s Tale might be coming to an end, Hulu is far from ready to say goodbye to Atwood’s dystopian world. Bruce Miller, who developed The Handmaid’s Tale for Hulu, is currently at work on adapting the book’s sequel, The Testaments for the streamer.

“It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.” We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”

    Miller

The Handmaid’s Tale stars Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel and Sam Jaeger. The first four seasons are now streaming on Hulu, while Season 5 will debut two episodes next week.

  • REVIEW: ‘Pinocchio’ is Visually Stunning but Unnecessary

REVIEW: ‘Pinocchio’ is Visually Stunning but Unnecessary

Over the past decade, Disney has made it a habit of remaking some of its biggest animated classics in live action. Sometimes the decision to remake these films works out well (Cinderella), but oftentimes, audiences are left feeling as though the remakes don’t live up to par (Dumbo). Unfortunately, while visually stunning, Pinocchio seems likely to fall in the latter category. It feels like a lifeless remake that does a poor job at adapting such a beloved animated classic.

Disney’s animated Pinocchio was released on February 23, 1940, and was based on the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The animated movie told the story of the living puppet, Pinocchio, and the cricket that serves as his conscience to help Pinocchio as he seeks to become a real boy. The live-action remake, of course, follows the same path. Unfortunately, though, it lacks the same charm and care as its predecessor. Sure, Tom Hanks‘ casting as Geppetto is fantastic. He captures the oddities of the character and easily steals every moment that he appears on the screen. The problem, however, is Hanks’ time as Geppetto is short, and when he isn’t around? This take on Pinocchio struggles to find its footing.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth does an excellent job voicing Pinocchio. He captures the emotions wonderfully, from confusion, to love and sadness – his vocal performance is up there with Hanks’ take on Geppetto. But as great as the two leads are, the secondary cast is forgettable – albeit not through any faults of their own. Giuseppe Battiston‘s Stromboli isn’t given much to work with and fails to be as imposing of a character as he should’ve been. And Honest John and Gideon feel underused despite essentially serving their purpose. It’s frustrating because, by the end of the movie, it’s hard to recall what should’ve been a noteworthy performance by Keegan-Michael Key (Honest John). And while Luke Evans does get to shine in the few moments he’s on screen as the Coachman, this is mainly due to the iconic numbers he gets to belt out. Ultimately, for such a stellar cast, the film fails to truly use any of them properly and it’s frustrating.

The fact of the matter is this take on Pinocchio never truly feels necessary. Yes, there are good moments, and there’s no denying the visuals are stunning. Outside of that, though, there’s truly nothing new that the animated classic doesn’t already have to offer audiences. To remake something, there needs to be a good reason to do so, but that special charm and wonder provided by the animated film does not exist in this remake. The musical numbers are still catchy – and Cynthia Erivo‘s brief musical moment as the Blue Fairy is stunningly done – but outside of that? There’s nothing truly memorable here.

That isn’t to say families won’t find joy in this film. For audiences not yet introduced to the animated film, Pinocchio will probably delight. Those that grew up on the classic, however, will struggle to find anything of note in this live action remake. Well-done visuals does not a great movie make. Pinocchio needed a bit more room to breathe. While the movie does a good job modernizing certain scenes – Pleasure Island, mainly – it often falls short elsewhere because it omits scenes that help to make the animated film the classic that it has become.

Perhaps Netflix’s version, coming later this year, will offer an exciting new take on a beloved classic. For now, fans can check out Pinocchio only on Disney+.
