Colin Farrell Talks ‘Penguin’ Series, ‘The Batman 2’

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Colin Farrell briefly talked about the forthcoming Penguin series he’s attached to star in for HBO Max. Earlier this year, reports suggested the spinoff series would kick off production in June. That, of course, did not occur. Now, with Farrell beginning work on the Apple TV+ series, Sugar, Farrell is hoping to film The Penguin soon. As he told Entertainment Tonight, The Penguin should start filming come the new year.

And Farrell is more than ready to don the Penguin prosthetics once again when it comes to The Batman 2. When asked if he’d be up for returning for the sequel, Farrell was more than enthused at the possibility of returning. “Oh my god, you kidding me?” He teased. “It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean…it was a joy.”

Matt Reeves, who directed and co-wrote The Batman, is also working on The Penguin. While he will not be directing episodes of the series, Farrell did tease Reeves is all over the series. Per Farrell, Reeves is helping to structure the scripts and help select the director(s) for the project. “He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over The Penguin as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”

News of The Penguin series first surfaced in September 2021. It wouldn’t be until March 2022 that the project was confirmed to be in development by the folks at DC. Agents of SHIELD veteran Lauren LeFranc serves as the showrunner on the series. As of now, it does not have a release date.

  • The CW’s ‘The Flash’ Will End with Season 9

The CW’s ‘The Flash’ Will End with Season 9

In not-so-surprising news, the CW has confirmed that The Flash will end with its upcoming ninth season.

Eric Wallace, who took over as showrunner on The Flash with Season 6, confirmed the show’s end in a statement to the press. He thanked the cast, writers, producers and crew throughout the years for all of their hard work, while celebrating Barry’s long-running story on the small screen. “Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” Wallace said. “So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

Speculation that The Flash would be canceled began earlier this year when it was revealed that leading man Grant Gustin was renegotiating a deal for just one more season. News that was later followed by the revelation that Candice Patton was also looking to sign on for just one more season, too. Of course, news that the CW would also be going up for sale didn’t help to stop speculation. After news of the potential sale hit, the CW began canceling shows left and right, including Legends of Tomorrow and Batgirl. Thankfully, unlike those two shows, fans of The Flash will get a chance to see storylines receive a proper ending.

While its views continued to drop throughout the years, The Flash still remained one of the CW’s most-watched shows in its eighth season, averaging around 1 million viewers and ranking among its most-streamed series on digital platforms. In its absence, it’ll leave behind Superman & Lois, Gotham Knights, and Stargirl, three DC Comics projects that are separate from the former Arrowverse that once ruled the network.

The Flash‘s ninth – and final – season will conclude with a 13-episode run next year as part of The CW’s midseason roster. Production on Season 9 will kick off sometime next month.

  • ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ Fetches $2M+ at Thursday Box Office

‘DC League of Super-Pets’ Fetches $2M+ at Thursday Box Office

DC League of Super-Pets is off to a decent start. The animated flick pulled in $2.2 million in Thursday night previews from 3,200 theaters. Industry estimates have had the film eyeing a $25-$30 million opening this weekend when it opens across 4,300 theaters. That would prove to be a strong opening for the film, it would also be ahead of 2018’s Teen Titans GO! To the Movies which only opened to $10.4 million.

Of course, DC League of Super Pets will have some stiff competition going into the weekend. While it is expected the film will dethrone Nope from the top spot at the box office, Top Gun: Maverick is still performing well and Minions: The Rise of Gru is still doing decent business at the box office. In fact, The Rise of Gru recently passed the $300 million mark at the domestic box office – an impressive feat, especially given it is an animated flick released during the pandemic.

The film, which was reportedly produced for $89 million, follows Krypto the Super-Dog, Superman’s dog who is voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is tasked with rescuing his owner, along with Kevin Hart’s Ace. While reviews have been mixed and the film is currently sitting on a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, that likely will not hinder the film’s box office potential, especially with Johnson and Hart attached.

Nope, which topped the box office with $44 million last weekend, is expected to pull in between $17-$18 million in its second weekend. Of course, as word of mouth continues to grow for Jordan Peele’s third feature film, it’s possible those numbers could go higher. Should that be the cast, Nope could stop League of Super-Pets before it truly gets a chance to take off at the box office.

DC League of Super-Pets is now playing in theaters.

  • ‘Creed’ Spinoff in Development

    ‘Creed’ Spinoff in Development

A new Creed spinoff is in the works. The Wrap has revealed that screenwriter Robert Lawton has been brought on by MGM to write a spinoff titled Drago. The spinoff will focus on Dolph Lundgren’s Drago, as well as his son, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), who appeared in the second Creed film. Further details regarding the film are unknown at the moment.

Lawton previously wrote a spec script titled Becoming Rocky that focused on the making of the first Rocky film. That script would later go on to be one of fifty to win a Nicholl Fellowship in 2021. After MGM execs read the script, they were impressed and ultimately gave him the job.

Lundgren briefly teased a Drago film in an interview with THR last year. The actor mentioned that there was talk about a spinoff focuses on his character over at MGM, but nothing had been set in stone at that point. Now that the project has been officially announced, it’s likely the studio will move to look for a director in the coming months.

The news of the Drago spinoff comes as Rocky and Creed star, Sylvester Stallone, has been vocal about trying to retain some of the rights to the franchise. Last week, the actor took to social media to express his frustrations with producers Irwin Winkler and his son David Winkler. The actor felt he deserved some ownership of Rocky, noting that he had “zero ownership” of the character despite creating and writing on all six films. Stallone has since deleted his posts calling for rights to the franchise, so it’s unclear if a deal has since been reached.

A third Creed film recently wrapped production and saw leading man Michael B. Jordan step behind the camera as the director for the threequel. That film is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 23rd, 2022.

  • ‘Jessica Jones’ Star Joins ‘Orphan Black’ Spinoff

‘Jessica Jones’ Star Joins ‘Orphan Black’ Spinoff

Krysten Ritter has booked her next TV gig. The Jessica Jones actress will star in AMC’s Orphan Black follow-up, Orphan Black: Echoes, which is slated to hit the small screen sometime next year.

Along with starring in the follow-up for AMC, Ritter will also executive produce the 10-episodes series. Echoes is set in the world of the original series, and will revolve around a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives, embarking on a thrilling journey that will unravel the mystery of their identity – all while uncovering a story of love and betrayal. Ritter will portray Lucy, a character that is described as trying to find her place in the world. Like with the original show’s star, Tatiana Maslany, who is now leading She-Hulk, Ritter will more than likely play multiple clones in the series.

Orphan Black: Echoes was first announced as being picked up to series back in April. This marks the first casting announcement for the series. Anna Fishko (The Society) serves as Echoes‘s creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. The original series was created by screenwriter Graeme Manson and director John Fawcett, who will serve as co-showrunner on Echoes. Returning from the original series are Boat Rocker’s David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, who will executive produce alongside the company’s Katie O’Connell Marsh, Nick Nantell, and Kerry Appleyard.

While a release date has not yet been announced, Orphan Black: Echoes is set for a 2023 release.

  • Holt McCallany Accepts ‘Mission: Impossible’ Role

Holt McCallany Accepts ‘Mission: Impossible’ Role

Mindhunter actor Holt McCallany has signed on for a role in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part Two. The actor will play Secretary of Defense Bernstein. He joins Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham and Pom Klementieff, who all star alongside leading man Tom Cruise.

Part Two will serve as the eighth title in the hit franchise. Cruise returns as agent Ethan Hunt who leads his team on globe-trotting missions as a means to avert global disaster. Details regarding the film’s plot are sparse, but the film could potentially serve as the end of the franchise, although no decision looks to have been made as of yet. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct the film from his own script after wrapping on Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One.

McCallany starred as FBI Special Agent Bill Tench on Netflix’s critically acclaimed series Mindhunter. He currently stars in the AMC drama 61st Street alongside Courtney B. Vance, which has been renewed for a second season. Other credits on his resume include Lights Out, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley and Blue Bloods

The last Mission: Impossible film, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, earned $791 million at the worldwide box office back in 2018. Cruise can currently be seen on the big screen in Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, which continues to fly high at the box office after two months in release.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part Two will hit theaters on June 28th, 2024.

  • Maris Abela in Talks to Portray Amy Winehouse in ‘Back to Black’

Maris Abela in Talks to Portray Amy Winehouse in ‘Back to Black’

The forthcoming Amy Winehouse biopic looks to be zeroing in on an Industry actor. Just weeks after confirming Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) will direct the film, Variety is reporting that newcomer Marisa Abela is in talks to portray the singer in Back to Black, although the outlet has noted a deal is not yet in place.

Abela currently stars in the BBC drama Industry where she plays the privileged but troubled Yasmin Kara-Hanani. The series will return for its second season next month. Outside of Industry, Abela has starred in the Sky TV series COBRA and starred alongside James Norton in the film Rogue Agent. She’ll next be seen alongside Haley Bennett and Sam Riley in She is Love. She is also set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie which will hit theaters next year.

The biopic is a passion project for Taylor-Johnson who was good friends with the singer and the project always intended to find a newcomer to portray Winehouse, rather than a pop star. The production also made sure to find someone that was of Jewish heritage to stay true to Winehouse’s background. While Abela has not sung in any of her projects to date, her RADA profile notes that she does sing and is described as an alto.

The script for Back to Black was written by Matt Greenhalgh. The biopic is being produced by Studiocanal along with Alison Owen and Debra Hayward alongside Tracey Seaward. A deal for a Winehouse biopic was first signed off on in 2018, when the estate signed a deal for the movie. Owen and Hayward have been attached to the project since then. Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, has thrown his support behind Back to Black.

As of now, a deal for Abela has not been finalized nor has a release date been announced for the film.
