REVIEW: ‘Marmaduke’ is a Giant Misstep

Marmaduke first debuted in June 1954 from creator Brad Anderson. Since then, the character has managed to endure and has received a live-action take starring Own Wilson. That film proved to be semi-successful, pulling in over $80 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. Which is why it isn’t surprising that Netflix decided to make a new, animated Marmaduke film for all-ages. Unfortunately, though, it often stumbles over itself as it struggles to decide if it wants to go for heart or entertainment.

The story itself is pretty typical for Marmaduke. Wherever he goes, chaos ensues. Which is why in the beginning of the movie, he’s left inside of the house as the family celebrates the youngest child’s birthday. In typical Marmaduke fashion, however, he soon finds himself at the center of the party and not necessarily for the best reason. Sure, it’s amusing, but it loses its appeal quickly. It feels as though the movie tries to sell a joke every other second, and it forgets to remember to have heart.

After causing a massive scene at the son’s party, Marmaduke somehow makes it onto the local news due to a “pool flop fail.” As the news anchor dubs the dog impossible to train, we see the world’s best dog trainer, Guy Hilton, decide to take on the ‘impossible’ task as a means to win a dog competition. It’s ridiculous, and the training montage that follows shortly after is even less entertaining. Perhaps it is Pete Davidson‘s voice work, or maybe it is the script, but the movie falls apart at this point. The entire casting for the film is a choice, but Davidson is an odd choice to voice Marmaduke. While he undoubtedly is comfortable with comedy thanks to his work on Saturday Night Live, he just feels miscast as Marmaduke.

The one thing the film did right was cast J.K. Simmons as Zeus, the movie’s big bad. Sure, the character is annoying, but Simmons does such a great job in his vocal delivery. It’s one of the better performances in an otherwise stilted film. But even with Zeus, it feels like the film took the easy way out in handling the bad guy.

Overall, Marmaduke makes a lot of odd choices throughout its one hour and sixteen minute runtime. There are moments that are heartfelt, and those moments are great. It’s just a shame that the film never truly knows what it wants to be, because had there been a tighter hold on the story? Marmaduke could’ve been a homerun for Netflix. That isn’t to say Marmaduke is completely terrible – it’s likely children will enjoy it, which is perhaps the most important thing. Unfortunately, though, Marmaduke is easily forgettable and feels as though it was rushed into production.

  • Elizabeth Olsen on WandaVision Fan Theories: “We Should Have Done That!”

Elizabeth Olsen on WandaVision Fan Theories: “We Should Have Done That!”

When WandaVision first debuted, fans were unsure of what to expect. Not only was it a unique series that would take Wanda across various decades, but it was the first series produced by Marvel Studios, leaving fans to theorize with each new episode. The common theory, of course, was that Mephisto would appear. However, there was one other theory that fans speculated over for weeks – whether or not Evan Peters’ Quicksilver was from the multiverse.

While we were the first to break the news that Peters would appear in the series, even we were unsure how Peters’ Quicksilver would debut within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Would he be the new Pietro going forward? Or was his role merely a cameo? Unfortunately, though, in the end, Peters’ Quicksilver was essentially a throwaway as the actor was later revealed to be playing the role of Ralph Bohner who was under the influence of Agatha Harkness. For fans, it was a frustrating reveal. As it turns out, though, Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen wishes they’d gone that route with the character.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Olsen noted that she found many of the fan theories surrounding WandaVision to be clever. “I love fan theories ‘cause I always think they’re very clever. There are usually ones where I’m like, ‘S***, we should have done that!”

She specifically noted the theories surrounding Peters’ Pietro. “There was one where they thought we were bringing in the Multiverse with the Pietro character, with Evan [Peters.],” she explained. “The sad thing is, when we were doing WandaVisionbefore Covid, that was not part of the docket yet, and then itkind of overlapped when we finished the show. So we could have actually gone back and fixed or adjusted that. I thought that could have been cool to make Pietro a part of the Multiverse.”

While certain fan theories regarding WandaVision didn’t come to fruition, the expansion upon the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is sure to open plenty of doors going forward.

  • Elizabeth Olsen Ready to Star in Scarlet Witch Movie If There’s a “Good Story”

Elizabeth Olsen Ready to Star in Scarlet Witch Movie If There’s a “Good Story”

For years, fans have been clamoring for a solo Scarlet Witch project, and while WandaVision might’ve served as just that, it appears Wanda’s story is far from over. During an interview to promote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen was asked about potentially starring in a Scarlet Witch movie. Although one has yet to be announced, the actress is ready to sign on with one minor caveat.

When asked when fans can expect Scarlet Witch to get her own movie, Olsen seemed more than ready to star in her own film. “Oh, I don’t know, but if they have a good story to tell, I’ll be there.”

Olsen has, of course, been very vocal in wanting to star in a solo Scarlet Witch film. She has previously expressed interest in wanting to adapt House of M in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has shown interest in wanting to continue Wanda’s story so long as there’s something worth telling.

It remains to be seen whether or not a solo Scarlet Witch project is announced. As it stands, WandaVision will not be receiving a second season, which does leave Olsen’s character open for a possible film. For now, though, fans can see again Scarlet Witch when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters this Friday.

  • Xochitl Gomez on Bringing America Chavez to Life in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Xochitl Gomez on Bringing America Chavez to Life in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to focus on Doctor Strange and Wanda, following the events of both Spider-Man: No Way Home and WandaVision, it is also set to introduce a new character. America Chavez of the Young Avengers will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness debuts later this week. The character will be played by Xochitl Gomez, who is perhaps best known for her work on Netflix’s The Baby-Sitter’s Club, and will mark the first live-action take on the fan-favorite character. So, it’s not entirely surprising then that many are curious about what she brings to the long-awaited Doctor Strange sequel.

During the press conference for the film today, Gomez was asked what America will bring to Multiverse of Madness. “I mean, um, one thing that was so important to me was that – this is a very adult movie, there’s lots of adults in it, it’s very heavy, and so, I wanted to make sure America still had that youthfulness, and still had that, you know, fake it till you make it you know just resilience,” she explained.

Gomez also noted the character’s age on film and how it differed from the comics, noting how it allowed Michael Waldron to write a new introduction for America. “You know, when you’ve got some crazy stuff happening it’s a little hard, but I think one thing that really helps is that she is fourteen – which is younger than she was in any of the comics – so I mean that really helps, you know, in writing a new introduction, which I think Michael Waldron did beautifully.”

Fans can see Gomez as America when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters later this week.

  • ‘Batwoman’ Canceled at the CW After 3 Seasons

‘Batwoman’ Canceled at the CW After 3 Seasons

The CW has decided to cancel Batwoman after three seasons.
The decision was announced by series showrunner Caroline Dries. She took to Twitter to confirm the news stating:

    https://twitter.com/carolinedries/status/1520142094131613697?s=21&t=PdVQeZc_hoE63eCQCWDjHA

Batwoman has had a bit of a bumpy path on the CW. The series initially starred Ruby Rose during its first season, however, Rose went on to leave the project ahead of Season 2. At the time, the actress hadn’t completely explained her reasoning for leaving, only saying it was a decision she hadn’t come to lightly. Rose would then elaborate on her exit, citing injuries she sustained while on set and the grueling hours required as a series lead. Things would only become more complicated down the line as reports circulated regarding Rose’s behavior on set, as well as allegations she’d made against Dries.

The series would later reinvent itself with the casting of Javicia Leslie as the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder. Unfortunately, though, while viewers tuned in to Season 2 to see how the new Batwoman would be introduced, the series took a bit of a stumble in its third season as it averaged around 760,000 viewers and a 0.2 demo rating – that is with Live+7 viewings already included. Those numbers are down approximately 20% from Season 2.

As it stands, The Flash has been renewed for another season, although reports suggest Season 9 could be its last. Fellow DC series Naomi and Legends of Tomorrow have yet to be renewed, although its expected news on those titles will hit soon.

  • Blake Lively to Make Her Directorial Debut Adapting Brian Lee O’Malley’s ‘Seconds’

Blake Lively to Make Her Directorial Debut Adapting Brian Lee O’Malley’s ‘Seconds’

Blake Lively is set to step behind the camera in her latest role as director. The Hollywood Reporter announced on Friday that Lively will helm the adaptation of Seconds for Searchlight. Seconds is based on the graphic novel of the same name from creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.

As expected, however, Clay soon finds herself obsessed with trying to correct every little mistake and soon finds she’ll have to face the consequences for ignoring the rules.

O’Malley, of course, is best known for his work on Scott Pilgrim which received a live-action adaptation from Edgar Wright. This marks Lively’s first film directing gig after she directed a music video for Taylor Swift last year with “I Bet You Think About Me.” The former Gossip Girl star has seen her star on the rise in recent years thanks to projects like The Shallows and The Rhythm Section.

  • REVIEW: ‘Crush’ on Hulu is a Delightful Young Adult Film

REVIEW: ‘Crush’ on Hulu is a Delightful Young Adult Film

Every so often, there comes a young adult film that leaves its mark as a delightful coming-of-age story. We’ve seen this with Pretty in Pink and most recently Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. It’s usually because they contain a certain level of authenticity to them; they manage to be heartfelt while maintaining a raw level of honesty. Crush is one of those films.

Like Love, Simon before it, Crush is a long overdue young adult dramedy that tells the story of Paige, a socially awkward artist, forced to join her high school’s track team to avoid suspension. If it sounds ridiculous, that’s because the concept is ridiculous, and yet it works. Crush manages to be charming, funny, heartbreaking, and honest. The best thing about Crush is that it feels like a film that’ll find a long life for movie fans because it is the type of film young audiences have needed.

Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, who are both members of the LGBTQ+ community, star in this delightful rom-com as Paige and AJ, respectively. Paige is an out and proud lesbian, while AJ is the mysterious bisexual twin sister of Gabby, Paige’s longtime crush. They’ve barely interacted, but soon find themselves thrown together to train, with AJ being instructed to ready Paige for track. What ensues is a chaotic story about first loves and heartache. Both actors are great in their roles, especially Blanchard, who gives it her all as the socially awkward Paige, but they shine most when they share the screen together.

And while the young cast steals the film, it’s hard not to highlight the performances of Megan Mullally, Aasif Mandvi, and Michelle Buteau. The always fantastic Mullally plays an incredibly supportive mother to Blanchard’s Paige. She’s a woman who believes sex positivity is important to teach and has always accepted her daughter for who she is – although sometimes she can be a bit too supportive. While Mandvi is the track coach, who nearly regrets putting Paige on the team until he meets her mom. Every interaction between Mullally and Mandvi is absurdly wonderful, but the best adult performance belongs to Buteau. She has limited screen time, but Buteau delivers some of the best lines throughout the film.

Is Crush awards worthy? No, not at all. Does it deserve its spot at the table with films like Pretty in Pink and Love, Simon? Absolutely. Crush is a darling young adult film that pulls at the heartstrings for all the right reasons.

If you need another reason to give Crush a chance: Natasha Lyonne, who starred in the classic But I’m a Cheerleader and currently stars in Netflix’s Russian Doll, is one of the producers on this film.
