    Tim Burton Reflects On His Time on ‘Batman’ and ‘Batman Returns’

    Tim Burton is an icon in the film industry for his very distinctive visual language that harkens back to gothic roots. After his success on Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Beetlejuice, he was given the opportunity to direct the Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of Batman. He cast Michael Keaton in the leading role and laid the first steps for the modern superhero genre. Yet, after his work on Batman Returns in 1992, the third entry was passed on Joel Schumacher with Batman Forever.

    In a new interview with Empire, the director got a chance to reflect on his work and even how surprised he was when he saw the direction they went with the third entry; even making fun of the infamous Batnipples.

    [Back then] they went the other way. That’s the funny thing about it. But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay. Hold on a second here. You complain about me, I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go fuck yourself.’ Seriously. So yeah, I think that’s why I didn’t end up [doing a third film]…

    He also goes on to highlight looking back that his take on the iconic franchise is more than just “dark” but he has positive memories of getting the chance to experiment with these iconic characters.

    I’m not just overly dark. That represents me in the sense that… that’s how I see things. It’s not meant as pure darkness. There’s a mixture. “I feel really fondly about it because of the weird experiment that it felt like.

    It’s great that he’s reflecting back on it positively and it’s always interesting to see how feelings change about a project over time. Batman and Batman Returns have become cult favorites, as well as defined the landscape that would eventually evolve with future entries like X-Men, Blade, and Spider-Man. Who knows if it might inspire him to lend his unique visual style to another superhero entry at some point in the future, as he’s currently busy with his Netflix The Addams Family spinoff series, Wednesday.

    ‘Predator’ Prequel ‘Prey’ will Be Available in Comanche on Hulu

    The first trailer for the upcoming Predator prequel, Prey, has finally arrived. Its first look promises some memorable action with the iconic alien taking on a Comanche nation from 300 years ago. The cast is almost entirely Native and First Nation talent,w which highlights the direction of the new film. Yet, Hulu and 20th Century went one step further as the entire film will be made available in Comanche as a language option, as well as subtitles.

    As such, this will be the first feature-length film on the direct-to-consumer streaming market to offer a film entirely in Comanche. It’s a wonderful decision to highlight the film’s exploration of the Comanche and that time period. We follow the story of a young female warrior trying to prove herself and setting out to protect her people from the alien predator that seemingly appears to threaten everyone it can get its blades on.

    Dan Trachtenberg has taken on directing duties based on a script from Patrick Aison. the cast consists of Amber Midthunder, Julian Black Antelope, Michelle Trush, Stormee Kipp, and newcomer Dakota Beavers. The Predator will be played by Dane DiLiegro. The first trailer offers an exciting action film that continues the franchise set up by John McTiernan back in 1997.

    Kentarou Miura’s Assistants and Close Friend Will Continue ‘Berserk’

    It was a shock for many when Berserk creator Kentarou Miura passed away. His series Berserk has been a mainstay since 1989 and Guts’ travel has touched the hearts of many. The modern Dark Souls games, which include the recent release of Elden Ring, take many cues in their imagery from the manga series. Yet, many mourned the death of its creator and worried that it may never be finished. Yet, it was revealed on Berserk‘s official Twitter page by publisher Hakusensha that the series will not conclude.

    Miura‘s long-time Studio Gaga assistants will continue drawing the series with one of his close friends, a fellow manga artist, Kouji Mori supervising the continuation of the iconic series. It seems that Miura has actively consulted and shared his plans for the series with Mori alongside his staff and editors. There are also memos and designs that were uncovered to help shape where the story initially was heading. The production team would follow the policy of “Mr. Miura said so” as they continue his legacy.

    They currently plan to end the current Fantasia Arc and Elf Island Chapters in the next six chapters before starting a new one. They confirmed that the numbering of the manga books will continue in order as well. Mori also talked about how his long-time friend passed on the story in its entirety to him and how he wants to keep up the iconic storyline of Guts and Griffith’s story. It’s not going to be an easy undertaking but it looks like Berserks isn’t going to end anytime soon and Miura‘s legacy will live on.

    ‘Ms. Marvel’ Iman Vellani Tried to Sneak in a Lockjaw Easter Egg

    The reviews have finally arrived for Ms. Marvel (of which you can find ours by clicking here) and it looks like many are excited about the young Pakistani-American superhero’s journey into live-action. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Iman Vellani who takes on the role of Kamala Khan talked about how she tried to sneak in an Easter egg to the Inhuman dog, Lockjaw.

    So, it sadly looks like Lockjaw won’t be appearing in the first season in any capacity, as many believed that the show might skip the Inhuman aspect altogether. Still, the giant puppy has played an important role in Kamala Khan’s story and it would be a shame to not explore their relationship. It’s great to see that Vellani personifies her character as much as she does.

    We did recently get the return of Anson Mount as Black Bolt, but he is part of the multiverse. Lockjaw made his live-action appearance in the infamous Inhumans series. We still don’t know if that aspect of her origin makes it into the series, as they could be playing the long con with their introduction especially as the Mutants are also making their way into the franchise.

    ‘One Piece’ Going on Brief Hiatus as Eiichiro Oda Plans to Prepare the Final Saga

    It’s insane to think that mangaka Eiichiro Oda has been working on One Piece for over 25 years. And, throughout that time he hasn’t taken many breaks as the series follows the Weekly Shonen Jump release format, even if he takes some breaks now and then. As he’s wrapping up work on what may be the biggest saga he’s ever told with Wano, Oda has officially announced that it’s going on a month’s hiatus from Jump’s Issue #30 to #33. He shared the message on Twitter, which was translated by @WSJ_manga.

    He jokingly shared a message in regards to his upcoming hiatus, where he highlights that he is trying to reorganize himself before tackling the final arc for the manga. Now, while he does say he wants to finish it as soon as possible, it doesn’t mean the next arc may take as long as Wano did, if not longer. Still, it’s great that he’s taking a break, especially as he also plans to travel to South Africa and visit the set of the live-action One Piece series. It seems his original trip was ruined due to COVID and he is finally using the chance.

    One Piece is about to hit another renaissance with a new game on the horizon, the latest film RED and a live-action adaptation. The manga about to enter its final stages is also something that’s hard to believe considering how long it’s been going. It also turns out that Oda hasn’t had a break like this since the initial time skip, which was all the way back in 2010. So, it’s a well-deserved rest as we still have a few more chapters before then, as Wano’s curtains come to a close.

    • Aaron Charles Donald is now the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history! The Rams are reworking his current contract and he will get $95 million through 2024, with $65 million of that guaranteed. As previously reported, retirement has been a strong possibility and the Rams (rightly so) won’t let that happen. Get paid, big fella! Get paid!
    • Next, Texans assistant coach Romeo Crennel is retiring! After 50 years of coaching, 39 seasons in pro football, and 5 Super Bowls, he will call it quits. “Football has been my entire life and it’s been a dream come true to coach for 50 years,” Crennel said in a statement.
    • Finally, your Key Signings Roundup is on deck: WR Keith Kirkwood is re-signing with the Carolina Panthers. Kirkwood is a quality depth piece for the team. The Houston Texans announced that they have signed free agent OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms.

    ‘Fargo’ Season 5 Slated to Star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh

    The hit FX series Fargo currently has its fifth season in development and it has now been announced that Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh will be starring. Not much is known about who the three actors will be portraying besides the names of their respective characters. Hamm is set to play Roy, with Temple playing Dot, and Leigh playing Lorraine. This season of the anthology series, that is set in the same universe as the 1996 film of the same name, is set in 2019, marking the most modern time period for the franchise. Fargo’s upcoming season will ask the questions of “When is kidnapping not kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?”

    Hamm, Temple, and Leigh join the large cavalcade of elite actors and actresses who have taken part in the Fargo series. These include the likes of Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in the first season, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons in season two, Ewan McGregor in season three, and Chris Rock and Jessie Buckley in the fourth.

    The Fargo series was created in 2014 by critically renowned director Noah Hawley, who serves as writer, director, and executive producer for the show. Since its release, Fargo has found mass critical acclaim having been nominated for 55 Emmys and winning six, including best miniseries for its first season in 2014. However, the most recent outing for the franchise received its lowest marks in terms of reception (even though the response to the fourth season remained positive overall). It will be interesting to note on if and how Noah Hawley and the team behind the show can retool and provide more of a bounce-back for the series with this new season.

    ‘Ted Lasso’ Writer Teases Apple TV+ Show May End With Season 3

    Ted Lasso is seen as a cultural phenomenon, as it brings a lot of positivity with each new episode. It seemed like a franchise that would keep going forever, but according to one of its writers and stars, Brett Goldstein, the series is currently being written as its last in an interview with Sunday Times.

    We are writing it like that. It was planned as three. Spoiler alert — everyone dies.

    Yet, as Variety points out, the co-created Jason Sudeikis has confirmed it was originally mapped out with three seasons but was open to continuing. All it would depend on if they have a few ideas to keep it going. He developed the series together with Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly which was actually inspired by a character he played on NBC Sports. Sudekis” quote was as follows:

    The story that I know is the one that I wanted to tell, and so that’s the one we’re telling with the help of numerous people in front of and behind the camera, so it’s by no means me typing every key stroke and saying every word,” he said. “It’s nowhere near like that. But the story that’s being told – that three-season arc – is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.

    Apple TV+ has quite the success on its hands and they even got the Premier League licensing for the upcoming season. So, it would be strange to go through that deal to only end the series right afterward. It lets them use archival footage and its many logos in the series, which may have had multiple years planned but we’ll find out once they start promoting the third season.

    Marvel Studios Promised ‘Deadpool 3’ Writers It’s Not Going to Be a “Disney-Fied Deadpool”

    Marvel Studios is a very different beast from what 20th Century Fox once was. Many have created a vision of what defines an MCU film and how Disney influences their productions. That led to some concerns by fans regarding some darker characters, especially when it was confirmed that Deadpool 3 is on the horizon. Luckily, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick deny any such influence.

    In an interview with The Playlist, they even highlight that while the studios have a very different dynamic, Marvel Studios has been quite a consistent support through it all. Outside of potentially pointing to some jokes going too far, which isn’t uncommon in any studio system.

    Obviously, it’s like, it’s two completely different regimes, right? So, it’s two different bureaucracies. It was Fox, all these different people, and now it’s not those people anymore. It’s these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel’s been incredibly supportive. They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘you know, that’s too far,’ that could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support

    The big highlight is how they’ve been approached by Marvel in trying to bring this film to life. It seems that they not only are offering ways to make it easier for them but also confirming that they are not going to force anyone to create a “Disney-fied Deadpool“.

    It’s been nothing but, ‘how can we help you?’ ‘What from our universe would you like to use? How, how can we make your life easy?’ And we’re gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool. We’re not… this is not going to be the Disney-fied ‘Deadpool.’ So they’re awesome, and now it’s up to us to come through and justify that faith

    That was one of the biggest concerns for the film, but they also confirm that we will have curses, joking referring to the title on the script being “Dead F*** Pool” but that they are definitely going for an R-rated rating. So this hopefully takes away some of the concerns that people had in regards to how they’ll bring Deadpool to life.

    ‘I Am Groot’ Won’t Be a Weekly Release

    So far, Disney+ has been focusing on a weekly release model unlike its streaming giant counterpart, Netflix. All Marvel Studios series were released on a weekly basis and it looks like they will break that tradition with the upcoming short collection of I Am Groot. It’s following the same structure as other shorts that have was released in the past on the Disney+ service, such as Olaf Presents or Scrat Tales.

    The Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff, I Am Groot, will consist of five shorts but there are no exact details on how long each individual episode will be, but as they are titled “shorts” we shouldn’t expect an overarching storyline or long episodes. Also, this isn’t a new thing for the service and isn’t a sign that they are changing the model, as it’s rather common for the service in how they tackle their shorts.

    It would be a tall order to tell people to wait weekly for shorts that might not even break the two-minute mark. While it would be great to see them play around with some series being made available to binge, it doesn’t seem like this is their plan for any other series outside of the various shorts that they’ve offered with Pixar, Disney Animation, and now Marvel.
