  • ‘Altered Carbon’ Cancelled After Two Seasons

‘Altered Carbon’ Cancelled After Two Seasons

Not too long ago, we discussed how Netflix’s business model sadly keeps shows from going beyond a certain amount of seasons. Sadly, it seems that their cyberpunk series Altered Carbon was also affected by it. It was officially announced that the show would not return for a third season. The show based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel followed Takeshi Kovacs as he switched between different bodies. In the first season, he was played by Joel Kinnaman before Anthony Mackie took over in the second.

Deadline reports that this show wasn’t affected by COVID. The decision was already made back in April. It is common for Netflix to cancel shows around their second season. They also just recently canceled the shows The Society and I Am Not OK With This. Those, however, were due to the pandemic. Ironically, the show is from Skydance Television, who Netflix has worked on the comedy Grace and Frankie which will end its run with seven seasons.

Netflix is still working with Skydance as they are also the ones that produced The Old Guard. Sadly, it looks like Takeshi’s body-swapping story has come to an end. Maybe further down the line, they can revisit this world with a new cast but we did get a great interpretation with two very unique seasons. Netflix is already expanding its sci-fi slate with a new season of Another Life and Away. Who knows what else they are already working on for the future but we will be there to keep you updated.

  • First ‘Dune’ Trailer Description Teases the Deserts of Arrakis

First ‘Dune’ Trailer Description Teases the Deserts of Arrakis

Denis Villeneuve has been on everyone’s radar. His work on Arrival transported us into a very unique take on a close encounter of the third kind. Black Runner 2049 was a personal standout with the return to the futuristic Los Angeles and the return of Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard. Now, we are all anxiously waiting for his take on the iconic franchise Dune. Rumors started bubbling that we would finally get our first look at the film on September 9th. Looks like Inside The Film Room may have gotten an early description of the trailer.

According to them, it will be around 1 minute and 37 seconds long. They confirm that WB and Legendary will have their logos adapted in the style of the film’s gold-black aesthetic. The start focuses on the Gom Jabbar test. In Frank Herbert’s original novel, this was used to test one’s humanity. In layman’s terms, they used a poisoned needle to see if someone would stay calm or react out of instinct. Timothée Chalament‘s Paul Atreides undergoes this test by placing a hand in a box. Charlotte Rampling appears in a regal black gown and pushes the needle into his neck. If he pulls his hand out of the box, he has failed the test.  This sequence also briefly cuts to shots of the deserts of Arrakis and the various cast members.

An aircraft opens to reveal Oscar Isaac, who was teased in previous official photos, Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Momoa. Here we are also introduced to Javier Bardem’s Stilgar and Zendaya‘s Chani. She will be climbing rocks with a group of Fremen, who are considered savages by the Imperium of this world.

They also tease appearances by Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Dave Bautista. He plays Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, who is described as if he was painted white and covered in dust. Also, a character emerging from a tub full of liquid that might be Stellan Skarsgård‘s character. It all builds up to the moment we see Paul among the Fremen. This is then followed by the Dune logo alongside a track that combines drums with synth music.

Now, we just got a little bonus as some visuals have leaked of the cast that confirms the visuals teased about the characters. Check them out here:

Now that sounds quite exciting. Villeneuve always had a way of making iconic visuals, so that is something I cannot wait to see. They do describe that the environments look stunning. The Gom Jabbar test is held in a circular room carved with beautiful decorations. They describe the endless desert as a beautiful and bright yellow river. It’s all quite exciting and cannot wait to dive into this new world once the trailer is released online.

  • ‘A Quiet Place’ Writers’ Sci-Fi Thriller Details Revealed

‘A Quiet Place’ Writers’ Sci-Fi Thriller Details Revealed

A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have teamed up with Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi for a sci-fi thriller titled Zoic.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Beck and Woods were developing a script with Raimi and Azizi producing, but no details were made available. We have learned that Zoic, which is casting now and aiming for a mid-November start of production in New Orleans, will see an astronaut make his way to an unknown planet where he soon finds he is not alone.

Beck and Woods will direct the project based off their own, original screenplay.

  • Sandra Saad Talks Playing ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Kamala Khan

Sandra Saad Talks Playing ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Kamala Khan

Kamala Khan is slowly coming into the spotlight. She was first introduced in 2014 in Captain Marvel #14. She got her own series that focused on her struggles balancing her life as a Pakistani American and an Inhuman. She idolizes Captain Marvel and takes over her former mantle as Ms. Marvel. It’s a story that found a lot of appeal in the market, especially with her being the first real Muslim to headline her own comic.

She has seen a spike in popularity after appearing in Marvel Rising series. Kathreen Kavari voice the character in this series and many others, which include Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, and Marvel Future Avengers. Now, she will also headline her own MCU series on Disney+ and will be playable in Marvel’s Avengers. Actress Sandra Saad performed the mo-capture for the character and voices her. In an interview with GameSpot, she talked about taking on the role of the freshly initiated Avenger. The biggest challenge was how to play someone who can embiggen.

I think I just did whatever I wanted. There was a lot of like, ‘Hey, what do you think it feels like to embiggen? Do that.’ And thankfully it worked out. Crystal Dynamics does a really good job of showing me the abilities and showing me the stuff that they’ve come up with. And that really helps inform what the movements are supposed to be. There’s only so much a human of my actual size can do, but I try.

She also discussed what is in store for Kamala in the story. Even the Beta teased that she and Hulk will share quite a few moments. Seems like we can expect a lot of emotional moments once we get our hands on the full game.

I’m not going to give anything away, but she does have special moments with everyone because it’s an Avengers story. It’s not just the Hulk and Kamala story. She relates to all of them just from her own abilities. And just from knowing everyone’s abilities already, you can see how they all relate to her as her heroes. But the Hulk, as you know, he’s a monster who has this thing about him that he can’t really control and Kamala does, too. She has this new power and she’s like, ‘What do I do with it? Is this weird? How do I even use it? Do I use it for good? Is this a disease? What is it?’ And so in that way, you can see that they both have a lot of similarities.

Saad has already given us a great interpretation going by the Beta experience. She gives Kamala a lot of energy, as she tries to reassemble the Avengers. There is a moment in the Beta where she finds old gear from the team and her inner fan leaking out was quite the joy to see. We are only over a week away from the game’s official release. Just recently it was revealed that we will get one more War Table that will tease the post-launch content. Let’s see what the future holds for Kamala and the Avengers.

  • ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Breaks July Digital Sales Record

‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Breaks July Digital Sales Record

Never did I think composing a haiku would be my favorite thing to do in a game. I guess that is just part of the charm when I got to play Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch created an open-world game set during Edo Japan. On the island of Tsushima, samurai Jin Sakai faces down the Mongrol army. This war takes a toll on Jin as he starts being changed by the tide of war. Looks like that concept was quite enticing. The game has officially become PlayStation’s fastest-selling exclusive IP on the PS Store. It has managed to sell 1.9M digital units in July alone.

To put this in comparison, Horizon Zero Dawn held the title until now. It had the same amount of virtual sales within two months. Sony exclusive Days Gone also needed two months to pass 1.3 million in digital sales. As of now, Ghost of Tsushima is also the biggest digital release for July. The Last of Us Part II also broke that record for June.

Summer is normally a quiet season for game sales but the current pandemic has changed that. Nintendo is also seeing quite the success this year with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 5M and Pokémon Sword and Shield at 2.7M. Their latest release Paper Mario: The Origami King did beat out last year’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses with 555K digital sales. It has been a major year for the gaming industry and we’ll see if more records will be broken as the year goes on.

  • Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Here’s a nice surprise. Marvel’s Avengers Beta has officially come to an end. All that is left is for the game is the official launch on September 4th. We were teased that a new War Table might be heading our way shortly before release. Sadly, we didn’t have any news when it would release. Also, what exactly we could expect from it. My personal hopes were to see some kind of tease of what post-launch content they have planned. Looks like my pleas have been heard, as a newsletter sent out via email confirmed that we will get the next War Table on September 1st with some major reveals.

    https://twitter.com/PlayAvenger/status/1298245643652259840

The newsletter confirms some Day One reveals for the launch. Quite curious about what the progression system is that they reference here. Either way, what sticks out is the confirmation of our first look at the post-launch “season” titled Avengers Initiative. This was already teased during the Hawkeye reveal last month. We know that each character has their own story missions. I believe that they purposely call it a post-launch content season as it will be something unique from those character-specific missions. They also will unveil an additional post-launch playable hero. My best guess is that this character will be one of the clone characters like War Machine or She-Hulk that were leaked a few weeks back.

  • ‘THE BATMAN’ Still Filming in Chicago

‘THE BATMAN’ Still Filming in Chicago

According to a new report from Screen Magazine, Matt ReevesThe Batman is still expected to film in Chicago this Fall, planning for a late October shoot.

Screen Magazine reports, filming in “The Windy City” is expected to take one to two weeks, with at least one month of pre-production. They are expected to do mainly shots of exterior downtown and that would possibly include Chicago landmarks, (suggested were the Thompson center and Board of Trade). It is currently unclear if stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, or Colin Farrell would be there for filming.

Twitter account @filming_chicago retweeted the article from Screen commenting that they hadn’t heard anything at this time, but felt confident in Screen’s information.

Meanwhile in Chicago, FX series Fargo has resumed production on it’s fourth season, with other Chicago based NBC shows (Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, and Chicago Med)expected to start up again in September. CW series The Batwoman had also done some filming in Chicago, and is expected to return at some point. Here’s hoping all go on without a hitch.

  • ‘CARNIVAL ROW’ Wraps; ‘THE FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER’ May Be Next

‘CARNIVAL ROW’ Wraps; ‘THE FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER’ May Be Next

Deadline has reported that Amazon Prime series Carnival Row (starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne) has finally finished filming it’s second season in the Czech Republic. The shoot began last November and was paused in March due to a COVID-19 shutdowns in the country (and pretty much everywhere).

Variety and Deadline both reported that Carnival Row only had 2 weeks of shooting left in the second season when they stopped in March, and it appears they resumed filming in late July/early August per a post from a Prague based extras agency. We have heard that the extra protocols due to COVID-19 would make the shoots a bit longer, approximately half a week added for every week expected, so this sounds about right to me.

This is excellent news for Carnival Row fans certainly, and potentially good news for Marvel fans as well that the series seems to have completed relatively quickly and without having to shut down again due to the virus. Many of you will recall the shut down occurred while Falcon and The Winter Soldier was trying to film some key scenes in the Czech Republic when it had to shut down production and leave the country. While we’ve heard rumors about different plans being made to try to get at least part of the production back to Prague to finish up, we have also heard that it is not absolutely necessary for them to return due to it being possible to film certain scenes elsewhere. Only time will tell in this very uncertain time. It would be a pity to miss out on those beautiful Prague sets they had planned tho!

  • ‘Mad Max: Furiosa’ Eyeing Chris Hemsworth as Male Lead

‘Mad Max: Furiosa’ Eyeing Chris Hemsworth as Male Lead

Mad Max: Fury Road came out five years ago. George Miller returned to the franchise he started back in 1979. After spending a few decades with children-friendly films like Babe or Happy Feet. His return gave us an amazing R-rated look at the sandy apocalypse and introduced us to an iconic badass, Furiosa. Miller then started becoming vocal about wanting to explore her backstory. That was a surprise, as we thought they would continue the story after Max left Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa at the end of Fury Road. Still, a sequel sounds interesting as it also gives us a chance to find out more about her first meeting with Immortan Joe.

Casting is already underway for the film, as Illuminerdi got their hands on the following character description:

    [DEMENTUS]
    Lead Male (30 – 40)
He is breathtakingly handsome. An angel’s face, scarred by a
deep forehead wound stitched together with shiny chrome
    staples.

Warner Bros. is currently interested in hiring Chris Hemsworth in the lead role. The description is quite interesting. The mentioning of a deep scar across the forehead is rather interesting. There probably is some kind of backstory they will explore where he got that wound. It will be interesting to see if this character even survives, as there isn’t anyone that would fit his description in Fury Road. No matter what direction they go, I cannot wait to see what they’ll do with this story. Hopefully, they will bring back the amazing visuals that made the last film stand out. I cannot wait to return to the wasteland once again.

  • CW Developing Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

CW Developing Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

No, you read that right. CW has started development on a brand new live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network show Powerpuff Girls. It will be another Berlanti Production with Diablo Cody, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden as executive producers. Berlanti is well-known for his work on YouRiverdaleDawson’s Creek, and the Arrowverse shows. They are certainly no strangers to CW and this seems to be in their wheelhouse.

According to Variety, the show will focus on the titular characters in their 20s. They have drifted apart and are resentful for wasting their childhood fighting crime. So, we can expect a lot of teen angst throughout the series with plenty of drama. We can probably expect something in the vein of CW’s Riverdale meets The Flash.

Of all series to adapt, this is a strange one. It just recently received a remake that was met with mixed reviews. The designs are also unique, so it’s a show that won’t be easy to translate into live-action. CW had quite the success with their darker adaptations of classic IPs. Yet, I am just having a hard time wrapping my head around this concept. Even as they faced some darker foes like HIM, it still was more comedy driven. Perhaps this version will tie-in to the Gorillaz, as Ace from the Gangreen Gang temporarily became their drummer. At the end of the day, I am quite curious about how they’re going to attempt this adaptation. We’ll have to wait and see what they cook up with Chemical X.
