  • ‘GOTHAM CENTRAL’ Spin-off Set in ‘THE BATMAN’ Universe in Development for HBO Max

‘GOTHAM CENTRAL’ Spin-off Set in ‘THE BATMAN’ Universe in Development for HBO Max

Before we’ve even had our first glimpse into Matt Reeves .Gotham City, HBO Max has announced a GCPD-centered spin off that’ll be set within the same continuity as The Batman. This show will further build upon the foundation of this new Batman franchise that will explore the corruption and crime within the city and those that are working to help clean up streets alongside our newest caped crusader.

This news comes a few days after Reeves inked an overall deal with WBTV to develop new programming produced by his company, 6th & Idaho. The show will be produced by Reeves and The Batman producer, Dylan Clark. It’s also being reported that the show will be written by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, who is also set to executive produce the series. HBO Max has already issued a series commitment for the Cop based comic book property.

Series details are currently under wraps and no casting has been made, it would seem obvious enough to have Jeffrey Wright reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon, who is set to make his debut next October when The Batman hits theaters. Many have compared the show to the Rucka/Brubaker ‘Gotham Central’ comic run that focused on the day to day of officers within the GCPD such as Marcus Driver, Renee Montoya, and Crispus Allen. It’s currently unknown if the series will draw inspiration from the comic but it wouldn’t be shocking to see that develop.

According to a trade report,Reeves had this to say about the news: “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision off the world I am creating in ‘The Batman’, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long form format can afford.” With this news its obvious that Warner Brothers is going all in on Reeves’ Batman universe, and rightfully so. He obviously has the passion and drive to really build something great and the potential of this is unmatched. The sky is the limit with this new universe, to see a fully developed Gotham City, this offers so much for the future of The Batman movie franchise as well as more possible spin offs within this pocket of the DC multiverse.

HBO Max is building quite the original DC content library and getting fantastic creative teams behind them, The GCPD centered show will join Green Lantern, Justice League Dark, and Strange Adventures while also adding Reeves to list of talent that’ll be developing this content like Geoff Johns, JJ Abrams, and Elizabeth Banks.

  • Javicia Leslie is CW’s New Batwoman

Javicia Leslie is CW’s New Batwoman

Batwoman has found a new its new caped heroine in Javicia Leslie, the actress is set to make her debut in its upcoming sophomore season on the CW network. Leslie will replace previous lead Ruby Rose, who departed the show after its first season due to being unhappy with the long hours spent on set.

Leslie will be portraying Ryan Wilder, a new and original character that is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed” and apparently the complete opposite of Kane. This leaves the door open for Rose to at any point reprise the role for a guest appearance or two.

It’ll be interesting to see how the show introduces Wilder; it has yet to be disclosed whether we’ll see this show move to another earth or if she will simply take up the mantle of Batwoman on earth-prime. Batwoman ended it first season earlier than planned due to the pandemic not allowing it to finish filming its last few episodes.

According to a trade report, Leslie had this to say about the news “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Bawoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

  • ‘ANT-MAN 3’ Production Update

    ‘ANT-MAN 3’ Production Update

I initially struggled with whether or not to share this information given the current uncertainty surrounding productions, especially here in the U.S.; however, in sharing it might clear up some confusion, so here it is: as of now, Ant-Man 3 has been rescheduled to begin production in June of 2021 in Atlanta.

Emma Fuhrmann on Twitter: "Part of the journey is the end ...

At the moment it’s really hard to predict what will happen with film and TV production in the coming months, much less all the way into next Summer, so I certainly wouldn’t start etching this one in stone any time soon but it is worth noting for one reason: when Marvel Studios reshuffled their release lineup earlier this year, fans were surprised, if not disappointed, that Ant-Man 3 wasn’t included on the slate. Captain Marvel 2 got a date and Ant-Man star Michael Douglas had teased that some Ant-Man 3 news would arrive, so what happened to Ant-Man 3?

Fans in some circles came to believe the film had been outright canceled, which was never the case. The reality is that the film, which was supposed to begin filming in January or February of 2021 was a victim of the uncertainty of the production slate due to COVID-19. With so many films moving to 2022 and a backlog of projects to film both in the U.S. and abroad, the studio was willing to give the film some room to breathe, especially with a new writer on board and, from what I’ve heard consistently, big plans for the film.

And so here we are. Certainly the team at Marvel Studios knows that anything production related is going to be touch and go for quite a while; it’s my belief that this is why they’ve remained so quiet over the past couple of months. That said, Ant-Man 3 has not been canceled and is absolutely still in the plans. If, by some miracle, everything stays on track and long term shut downs are avoided, we could see Ant-Man 3 in theaters late 2022 or early 2023!

  • Rumor: Warner Bros. Rebooting the Justice League

Rumor: Warner Bros. Rebooting the Justice League

Warner Bros. has made a lot of news with its DC properties over the past several weeks: from bringing Michael Keaton back to developing films for Zatanna and Constantine, they’ve certainly made a big footprint recently. Today’s latest rumor, however, is certainly the biggest: the studios is looking at rebooting the Justice League with a Justice League: Rebirth film. According to the rumor, the film is being developed as its own property and is not associated with Justice League, The Snyder Cut of Justice League or any other Justice Leagues.

Looking Back on Volume One: An Interview with Justice League's ...

As the report rightly points out, this sort of “reboot” is right up the alley of J.J. Abrams who recently signed a lucrative deal with Warner Bros. to develop several properties. While it’s unknown at this time what the intended fate of the new Justice League project might be, it certainly seems like it would head to theaters, assuming those are still a thing.

Justice League: Rebirth launched in 2016 as part of DC’s Rebirth line wide initiative. Written by Bryan Hitch, the team consisted of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, Mera, Cyborg and Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. It will be interesting to follow the development of this film and see what existing actors, if any, make the jump.

  • ‘STARGIRL’ Renewed, Moved to CW for Season 2

‘STARGIRL’ Renewed, Moved to CW for Season 2

Before it has even finished its first full season run, Stargirl has received a season 2 renewal and will be moving exclusively to The CW for its sophomore season. For the past eight episodes, the show has premiered a day early on the DC Universe streaming service and debuted on the CW the next. The solid and steady ratings the show has amassed was likely a leading factor in it being moved to The CW. Season one of Stargirl will reportedly make its way to HBO Max once this season finishes its current run.

This news leads to a couple of concerns: will it suffer the CW curse and what’s happening over at DC Universe?

Most CW shows receive 20+ episode seasons, leading to story-lines being dragged out and to filler episodes that don’t benefit the dynamic of the story in any way, shape, or form. The best-case scenario to avoid a situation like this would be to give the show at a mid-season premiere and offer an episode count similar to its first season. This would make it easier for the show to keep its budget compared to what it was when it was originally produced for DC Universe: quality over quantity.

Since the announcement that Doom Patrol season 2 would run on both HBO Max and DC universe, many have wondered what fate the  DC Universe service would suffer. Since then, an exodus of its original content has become a monthly occurrence. Along with Doom Patrol, it seems as if Harley Quinn’s first two seasons will make their way to HBO Max as well. Where does this put Titans and Young Justice? The best course of action would be to leave DC Universe as a virtual comic library and move these shows to HBO Max, giving their DC library a much bigger boost and more original content for the service to offer while also giving these shows a much larger audience to appeal too.

  • Report: J.J. Abrams Producing a New ‘CONSTANTINE’ Film

Report: J.J. Abrams Producing a New ‘CONSTANTINE’ Film

A new report from DCU Direct indicates that J.J. Abrams will produce a new live-action Constantine film for Warner Bros. to debut on HBO Max. This report comes on the heels of rumors of the studio developing a Zatanna solo film. As these reports continue to come in, it appears that Warner Bros. plans to use HBO Max to build the roster of Justice League Dark through standalone films before assembling the team in the announced streaming series.

    Art by Boss Logic

More interesting than the development of the film is the inference that the studio may actually be courting Keanu Reeves to return in the role of John Constantine, 15 years after he first appeared in the role. Following the news of the studio’s interest in bringing Michael Keaton back as Batman in the upcoming Flash solo feature, the possibility of Reeves coming back is certainly intriguing.

Should Abrams truly be building the team through solo films, it’ll be interesting to see if Swamp Thing, Deadman or other characters associated with the team find their way into individual projects as well. Stay tuned as news continues to develop around these projects.

  • ‘BLACK WIDOW’ Just the Beginning for Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova

‘BLACK WIDOW’ Just the Beginning for Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova

The vest. Nat’s wearing the same vest as Yelena, so Yelena is going to die and Nat wears the vest to remember her! That’s a really short and poor summary of one of the most prevalent fan theories surrounding the fate of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova in the upcoming Black Widow. It looks like fans will have to get to work on another explanation, however, as director Cate Shortland seems to have dug a grave for the popular theory in an exclusive interview with Empire Magazine in which she indicates the film will see Scarlett Johansson pass the torch to Pugh.

Black Widow's Florence Pugh Explains Her Concerns Over Getting ...

Talking with Empire about the film, Shortland explained how she and Marvel Studios The-One-Above-All tried to circumvent fan expectations with the upcoming film and how that will apparently lead to Pugh taking over the mantle and, potentially, the franchise:

[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction. And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.

In all honesty, the chances of Marvel Studios bringing in a young actress of Pugh’s caliber for a one off were always incredibly low and there are plenty of other ways around the “vest” theory, one of which I teased in a series of tweets back in March:

Of course my crackpot theory is just as unlikely to be accurate as anyone else’s, but I’m still not sure that I can get talked out of it either. Moving Yelena forward, both in standalone Black Widow sequels and in other projects, as good character who was corrupted by AIM presents a wonderful contrast to Nat’s bad character looking to make good. Of course we’ll have to wait to see how it all turns out, but with a project like The Thunderbolts rumored to be on the horizon, Pugh could find herself a VERY busy actress over the next decade.

Look for more Black Widow news from Empire Magazine this week and, I would suspect, a couple of new looks at the film as well. Black Widow is set to hit theaters on November 6, 2020.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Prepping to Restart Production This Month

‘SHANG-CHI’ Prepping to Restart Production This Month

The good news just keeps on rolling in. It appears that production on Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, which paused in March, will resume sometime this month in Australia. According to a trade report, Marvel Studios is taking “careful steps” to allow the film, which is scheduled for a May 7, 2021 release, to get back underway at Fox Studios in Australia.

New Alleged Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings Leaks Detail ...

The report indicates that as cast and crew return to Australia, they will quarantine in accordance with government regulations before returning to work. This is excellent news as the May 2021 release date would have been in serious jeopardy had the production not resumed on the film in the near future. Of course things may change, production may be halted again and we have no clue what the theater situation will be, but for now we’ll take every bit of good news we can!

  • Are The Infinity Stones Truly Gone?

Are The Infinity Stones Truly Gone?

With Avengers: Infinity War recently being added to Disney Plus, Marvel took the opportunity to give a rundown of the history of each of the Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Noteworthy is that the IG post by Marvel Entertainment lists the status of each of the stones as “destroyed”, a description which has caused a little debate online. To clarify, the stones in question here are those from the Prime Timeline and not the ones that were acquired as part of the time heist in Avengers: Endgame; each of those stones is clearly still in play in its individual timeline which explains why we have a Loki show coming up on Disney Plus eventually.

As Thanos told the Avengers, he “used the stones to destroy the stones” as they served no further purpose than to pose as a temptation; however, as the Russos described in an interview in May of 2019, even in the MCU the stones follow the very important scientific principle of the conservation of mass so the true fate of the stones was, as Thanos further described it, isn’t quite so simple and incredibly important. Even the power of the Infinity Stones can’t change the simple fact that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, but Thanos did use that power, and the particulate nature of matter, to reduce the stones into their individual atoms.

Why was the Ancient One not willing to give the Time Stone to ...

This is good news for the MCU because, as the Ancient One told Bruce Banner, the stones are essential to the flow of time and their removal or destruction would portend very, very bad things for the timeline. So while the stones aren’t big chunks of matter anymore, all the matter that made up the stones still exists which means the world can keep on keeping on. We will see what implication, if any, this has on the future of the MCU, other than allowing it to have one, when Phase 4 gets going sometime in the next 4 months to a year.

  • ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Set To Complete Production This Fall

‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Set To Complete Production This Fall

Yesterday finally mixed in some good news among the current round of doom and gloom as we learned that the Czech Republic was offering film crews an exemption to the current EU travel ban. This exemption provides an opportunity for Marvel Studios to complete filming on their Disney Plus streaming series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and, according to a new trade report, the studio plans to do just that. The report indicates that the studio is currently preparing to head back to Prague, where production was taking place before the pandemic shut things down, for a 9 day shoot this Fall!

While the details of the shoot, including a targeted start date, haven’t been made available at this time we can revisit some old speculation (found here) about some locations Marvel Studios had staked out that could serve as either Zemo’s ancestral home or a base of operations for his schemes going forward.

Despite there being quite a bit we don’t know, we can certainly all agree that yesterday’s good news seems to have gotten a little better and we might be able to hold on to hope that we could see The Falcon and The Winter Soldier streaming in 2020.
