In an interview with Howard Stern, Gunn confirmed that Man of Tomorrow will feature a Superman and Lex Luthor team up.
As part of Gunn’s announcement of the film, which took place across multiple social media platforms, artwork for the film was shared, including a piece from DC Comics’ legend Jim Lee. Fans immediately cleaned from the art that Man of Tomorrow would involve Luthor and Superman working together to take one a shared enemy. Gunn confirmed that, telling Stern that Man of Tomorrow is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.“
“It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it,” continued Gunn. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I Just love the script so much.”
While fans believe that threat will be Brainiac, that’s yet to be confirmed; however, it may not be long before the villain of Man of Tomorrow is revealed as production is tentatively set to begin early next year.
“I am creating the Superman sequel that we’re starting to shoot in April or so,” Gunn told Stern. With principal photography only seven “or so” months away, casting for the film should begin relatively soon, giving some bread crumbs to those looking to deduce the film’s big bad.
After weeks of teasing the next film in his Superman Saga, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn took to social media to announce the title and release date of the project.
Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, and is expected to pit Superman against Lex Luthor once again…and also team up with him?
The announcement was accompanied by a fresh piece of art by DC Comics CCO and legendary comic book artist Jim Lee which shows David Corenswet‘s Superman in hs DCU suit next to Luthor in a fully-realized Warsuit.
The very successful launch of DC Studios Superman provided real momentum for the all-new, all-different DCU. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently told shareholders that the “DC vision” was clear and teased “an ambitious, 10-year plan of interconnected sequels and spinoffs,” which he said included a “Super -Family” film written and directed by Gunn. Shortly after, Gunn teased that the next film in his four-film Superman Saga would head into production “much sooner rather than later,” and feature “the group of characters we’ve already met.” That now includes Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, who was taken into custody and to Bell Reve Correctional Center in the final act of Superman.
Corenswet and Hoult both took to Instagram to share additional artwork celebrating the announcement:
Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters just two days shy of two years after the release of Superman; it will also release two weeks ahead of an untitled Marvel Studios film, just as Superman opened two weeks ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As cameras roll on the first day of principal photography of Star Wars: Starfighter, Lucasfilm has released the film’s main cast via a press release on StarWars.com.
Young actor Flynn Gray (Wednesday), Lanterns and Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre, British comedian Simon Bird, West End Hamilton star Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen) and Amy Adams wereball officially announced as part of the cast of director Shawn Levy‘s film.
I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.
Though not many were convinced they could pull it off, Marvel Studios once planned to roll out a pair of Avengers films in six months. During the studio’s Hall H panel at SDCC ’22, Kevin Feige revealed that 2025 would feature the studio’s first Avengers films since 2019, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty arriving in May and Avengers: Secret Wars in November. It was an ambitious plan but one that would certainly have ended up with Marvel all but printing its own money.
The Phase 6 double dip wasn’t in the cards for the studio. A pair of strikes, some box office duds and a pivot to a new villain later, May 2025 has come and gone without an Avengers movie and it will now be December 2026 before Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters. As part of Disney’s new strategy, Doomsday will be the only Disney-owned Marvel film in theaters in 2026 and 2027 isn’t looking much better, with an untitled film on the books for July and Avengers: Secret Wars in theaters in December. For a studio struggling to hit big at the box office, less needs to be more…which means that July 2027 film needs to hit and hit big.
If Marvel Studios is intent on putting a film in theaters in July 2027, they sure haven’t given any indication that it will be a property of which the public is not already aware. As of now, the hiring of new writers or directors has not been made public and no new production companies that aren’t already believed to be accounted for have been made. That would mean that the film would be something that’s been in development for a few years and that would, of course, bring to mind Blade.
Though a series of unfortunate events has befallen the film, most recently resulting in it being removed from the studio’s 2025 slate, a recent update from Kevin Feige made it sound as though Blade was headed in a positive direction and would eventually make it’s way to theaters. With a script that’s been in the works for years and at least a partial cast, Blade is precisely the type of project that the studio could pull together in a short amount of time, assuming they find a director willing to give it a run. It’s also the type of film they could produce on a relatively low-budget, allowing them to get a dub at the box office while spinning a yarn that won’t detract from but could add to the overarching Multiverse Saga plot–similar to Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel, both of which released between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame–while also telling a standalone tale.
An All-New, All-Different Avengers Film
And then there’s another option…Marvel Studios making good on its insane plan to roll out two Avengers films in a calendar year…
After rolling out an Avengers film every three years before dropping Infinity War and Endgame one year apart, the studio has used the first five years of the Multiverse Saga to spin a whole lot of disparate tales and introduce a whole lot of new characters…only to never follow up on very many of them. That’s left a bad taste in the collective maw of fandom as heroes such as Shang-Chi, Moon Knight and She-Hulk have been, to date, one-and-dones. And now, as the Multiverse Saga finds itself accelerating to its end, it becomes increasingly difficult to imagine incorporating them all into the cast alongside the stars announced as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday; however, releasing a third Avengers film in theaters in July 2027–between Doomsday and Secret Wars–might provide the narrative runway to make it possible.
Verily, Disney’s new approach has shorted Marvel…but a “secret” third Avengers film would ensure that the studio would own the box office for 12 months. Whether it’s Avengers: Time Runs Out, Avengers: Battleworld, Avengers: Everything Dies or Avengers: Illuminati (an Illuminati project was 100% in development at the studio at one point in time), a bridge spanning Doomsday and Secret Wars is a fascinating and cash-rich opportunity for Marvel.
Logistically, it’s a legitimate possibility that work has been being done on these films, even under different names, for at least three years. Ideas can be cut and pasted and altered under the purview of the new creative team. Typically, principal photography on a Marvel Studios film lasts 3-4 months… Doomsday is already in its fifth month. Secret Wars was originally set to film back-to-back before a year’s with of space was added..but who is to say that between now and September 2026, cameras aren’t continually rolling?
Given there’s no shortage of exciting potential storytelling opportunities including characters old (Steve Rogers) and new, the potential for a third Avengers film in the Multiverse Saga cannot be dismissed out of hand. The studio put a significant amount of time and resources into multiple projects that no longer have a place in the saga; however, that leaves them with a chunk of material from which to draw the skeleton of a third film which fits nicely into the continuity of the saga.
Following Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav‘s proclamation that the DCU vision was clear and that a James Gunn-directed “Super-Family” film was making its way through the pipeline, Gunn wasted no time letting fans know that the film was the next story in his Superman Saga and that it was much further ahead in development than expected. “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga,” Gunn said during the August 13th red carpet event for Season 2 of Peacemaker. “The treatment’s done–which means a very, very worked out and I’m hopefully going into production on that treatment–and I’m working on that not too far away from today,” he explained, opening the possibility of the Superman follow-up landing in theaters as soon as 2027.
I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.
“It’s within the group of characters we’ve already met, and Superman’s an important element of it. So, that’s what I’ll say, but like that movie, that treatment is done,” Gunn told Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro. Given there’s been just one film in the DCU, it would seem as though Gunn is teasing the inclusion of Maxwell Lord’s “Justice Gang” and, hopefully, Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, in the new film.
In a separate interview with Chris Hardwick, Gunn cotinued to tease just how quickly the project has come together, saying it may be the next movie to go into production. “I can say that probably the next movie we’re gonna be making is the follow-up to Superman, which I don’t want to get in too much detail on, but like that’s what’s probably the next film we’re making, I think,” Gunn said before adjusting his comments. “Well, hopefully we’re making [‘The Batman Part 2’] before that, and then I think it’s [the ‘Superman’ follow-up],” he said before adding a tease about an upcoming streaming series. “And then we have another TV show, which nobody knows about, which is going next.“
With that, it certainly sounds as though DC Studios intends to have a House of El film in theaters in each of its first three years, something not many would have predicted just a few years ago. While Gunn continues to try to bring Batman and Wonder Woman up to speed, it looks as though Superman will carry the studio’s hopes for the foreseeable future.
By choosing not to put together a big Hall H presentation at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Marvel Studios seemed content letting Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps do its talking this Summer. Both films were a hit with critics and fans and generated plenty of discussion; however, with a year-long wait until the next MCU film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, hits theaters, there will need to be some additional topics of conversation. And while production on Destin Daniel Cretton‘s Spidey film has been making headlines, it’s likely to move inside for a significant chunk of time, disappearing from the spotlight. That leaves Marvel Animation’s Marvel Zombies and Marvel Television’s Wonder Man on the docket and, so far, neither have drawn much interest from fans. So, what can Marvel Studios do to make some noise?
Without its every-other-year D23 convention on the calendar, it looked as though the studio may have intended to go the rest of the year without showing off its future slate; however, over the past week, the revelation that the studio will have a presence at a pair of events has provided some hope for a look at Marvel’s plans for 2026!
First up, Destination D23
Destination D23 is a Disney fan event, specifically a smaller, biennial event held in Walt Disney World that alternates with the larger, flagship D23 Expo. This year, it’s taking place from August 29-31 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The event offers fans a chance to celebrate Disney’s past, present, and future through exclusive presentations, behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming projects, special guests, and unique shopping experiences. On Saturday, August 30th, the Walt Disney Studio’s Showcase will give fans in attendance “an exclusive look at the movies fans love, and a glimpse into what to look forward to from Disney’s film studios,” which, of course, includes Marvel Studios.
While Marvel has not been confirmed to have a presence, it is possible that the event will include an appearance by Kevin Feige. And with no films on the slate until next year, the panel could contain some information about Avengers: Doomsday, which remains in production in the UK.
New York, Neeeeeew Yoooooork…Comic Con
Held at the Javits Center from October 9-12, NYCC will be “Four jam-packed days of pop culture, film and TV studios, studio and brand activations, comics, celebs, authors, voice actors, panels, and geeky goodness right here in NYC. And most importantly, a home for heroes, villains, and nerds to be accepted and embraced,” and Marvel Studios WILL be there.
On October 11th, fans are invited to “join special guests for a look behind the scenes at Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ shows from Marvel Television and Marvel Animation.” With Marvel Zombies streaming on September 24th, only Wonder Man remains on the 2025 slate. It is possible–perhaps even likely–that Marvel uses the panel to roll out the first full trailer for that project but that’s almost certainly not all that they’ll get up to.
With Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again set to hit D+ in March, Marvel could wow the NYCC crowd with a first look at the upcoming episodes. Additionally, given Marvel Animation’s presence, a look at Season 2 of X-Men ’97 and/or Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man could be in order. It’s possible the studio could also provide a first look at the Paul Bettany-led Vision series and reveal additional animated projects in the works.
In the latest edition of THR’s Heat Vision, reporters Borys Kit and Aaron Couch shared confirmation that Reynolds‘ Deadpool is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday in some capacity.
Sources tell Heat Vision that yes, Deadpool will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. (Don’t expect him to actually be joining the Avengers team, though.)
-Heat Vision
After successfully navigating and escaping The Void before saving the Multiverse from Cassandra Nova, it’s hardly surprising that Reynolds‘ “Marvel Jesus” would return alongside the studio’s biggest stars with Incursions now threatening to obliterate the Multiverse.
“I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted.
-Ryan Reynolds
THR’s claim that the appearance will not include Deadpool teaming up with the Avengers is consistent with Reynolds’ wishes for the character’s future in the MCU. “The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy. His enthusiasm and longing to be part of a team is really endearing to me. It’s his overarching wish-fulfillment story. But I don’t think he should ever be an Avenger or an X-Man,” explained Reynolds in a 2024 interview. “If he becomes either, we’re at the end.“ It sounds as though the end is not near after all, at least not for the Merc with a Mouth.
The very successful launch of DC Studios Superman provided real momentum for the all-new, all-different DCU. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently told shareholders that the “DC vision” was clear and teased “an ambitious, 10-year plan of interconnected sequels and spinoffs,” that includes among them a “Super -Family” film written and directed by James Gunn. Now, ahead of Superman’s digital debut, Gunn has updated the status of the project.
In an interview with THR, Gunn stated that he has completed the treatment for the next story in what he is now calling the “Superman Saga” and that production on the project could begin “not too far away from today.”
“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga,” said Gunn. “The treatment’s done–which means a very, very worked out and I’m hopefully going into production on that treatment–andbim working on that not too far away from today.“
Should production get underway this year, it’s possible the new film could be in theaters far sooner than anyone had expected. Gunn has made it clear he’s been working on a follow-up to this summer’s Superman but it seems to have come together shockingly fast…perhaps even faster than a speeding bullet.
After acquiring the live-action rights to the characters in the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, Marvel Studios took great care in bringing The Fantastic Four into the MCU. Six years later, the First Family hit the screen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in what has been roundly praised as one of the studio’s best efforts in The Multiverse Saga. Though the film suffered a precipitous dropoff in its second week at the box office, the Matt Shakman-helmed sci-fi flick charmed audiences with its retrofuturistic setting and old-timey sense of hope.
The titular four are set to play key roles in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will keep the cast busy for most of the next year and a half, which means if a sequel were in the works, it would likely not hit theaters until 2028 or later. And now a new report from a familiar source looks to put concerns that the struggles at the box office might have put a premature end to the Fantastic Four franchise.
According to industry insider Jeff “The In” Sneider, following Disney President Bob Iger’s praise for the film, which he said “successfully launched this important franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Kevin Feige and the crew at Marvel have decided that “Matt Shakman will likely return to direct a sequel.”
The powers that be at Marvel reportedly feel that their appearances in the next two Avengers films will serve as a springboard for a Fantastic Four sequel. With the studio currently holding four dates for Marvel Studios films in 2028, it’s very possible that the next installment could join Black Panther 3 and X-Men on the slate as the studio enters the post-Multiverse Saga era.
With cameras set to roll on Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars film, Shawn Levy‘s Starfighter, the studio has cast Doctor Who and House of the Dragon star Matt Smith opposite Ryan Gosling. According to Deadline, Smith is set to play “the next great villain in the Star Wars universe.”
Officially revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2025, Star Wars: Starfighter is set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and will feature Gosling as a brand-new character. Mia Goth, who was cast in June, is also reportedly playing a villain in the film which is due in theaters on May 28, 2027.
