  • Sony Promises First Look at Spider-Man 3 in 2020

Sony Promises First Look at Spider-Man 3 in 2020

    Announced during ExpoCine 2020.

These past 2 days, ExpoCine held its annual convention in virtual form. ExpoCine is the largest event in Latin America regarding the cinematographic industry, where movie companies from around the world exhibit their upcoming lineups to multiple film exhibitors from Brazil and worldwide. The biggest names at the event were Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Universal, Netflix, and more.

I was able to attend and listen to the conferences from these major companies and was treated to some nice goodies. But the biggest heavy hitter of the day was definitely Sony Pictures, who treated attendees to first looks and behind the scenes footage for the upcoming Monster Hunter film, along with some updates on Connected, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Hotel Transylvania 4, and more.

The most important update for me was the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 3’ sequel, currently set to release in December 2021. Camila Pacheco, the Executive Marketing Director of Sony Pictures Entertainment in Brazil, (who was wearing a Spider-Man shirt mind you), told attendees that the film had already started production and that we would get our first look at the film THIS DECEMBER 2020. She alternated between the words preview and teaser trailer when discussing the project but the point of the matter is, we should be getting some info on the upcoming Spider-Man 3 film sometime for the holiday season. The film was confirmed to keep its December 16th, 2021 release date and she also stated that the Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage films will still have their March 2021 and June 2021 releases.

  • Phase 4: Reality Checked

    Phase 4: Reality Checked

From director picks, casting confirmations for Electro, Kang the Conqueror, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel to release date postponements, and WandaVision trailers, Marvel Studios has certainly been its most active since the pandemic arose back in early 2020. And while we won’t have any theatrical releases from Marvel until May 2021 with Black Widow, Phase 4 is definitely set to kick off in late 2020 with the premiere of WandaVision on Disney+, with evidence suggesting it might come out this November.

Now, since the announcement of Phase Four back in SDCC 2019, I was particularly intrigued by two projects in that lineup: WandaVision (2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).

    Wanda Maximoff and Doctor Strange.

We know from the Marvel Studios panel last year at SDCC that the events of WandaVision are going to tie directly into the Multiverse of Madness and based on what we know from the plot synopses of these projects (& the LITERAL title of the Doctor Strange sequel):

PHASE 4 WILL delve into the multiverse

    Kevin Feige at SDCC 2019.

To quote Kevin Feige: “Just because Quentin Beck makes up lies about the multiverse, doesn’t mean it isn’t real.” When Feige announced these two projects and said they would tie directly with each other, the first thing that immediately came to mind was House of M, a comic book event where Scarlet Witch managed to alter the reality in the comics, something that has already been teased to occur during the WandaVision Disney+ show. What makes this show so important is that the events in which the show is based on affected not only Wanda and Vision but pretty much the entire 616 comic universe as a whole. So, we can predict that the events of WandaVision  will transcend the boundaries of the show and affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

HOW DOES THE MULTIVERSE ACTUALLY WORK IN THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE?

We know that based on Professor Hulk’s and the Ancient One’s descriptions of how the flow of time works that whenever someone from the future alters the events of the past, they don’t necessarily affect the events of that timeline, but rather create another timeline based on the alteration of those chain of events, essentially creating a brand new universe. An example of this will be shown in the upcoming Disney+ show; Loki (2021), where we’ll see Loki, presumably in an alternate timeline (and therefore an alternate universe) with the Tesseract following the events of the “The Avengers” (2012).

BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF REALITY BREAKS?

In the multiverse theory, each separate universe exists in a different plane of existence from another universe, meaning all of these alternate universes exist, but they are separate from each other. But let’s say that the events of one universe are so powerful, that they can alter the fabric of space-time, to the point where the spaces between universe begin to blur and those alternate universes begin to converge onto one another. That would mean that theoretically if Wanda Maximoff is indeed the catalyst that will break reality by the series finale of WandaVision, then Wanda could be so powerful that not only could she tear a rift in her universe, but create a rift in reality itself, which could allow the merging of other universes into our own. And the results of these rifts could bring about so many exciting possibilities to the MCU. For example:

we could see some old faces:

We already know from our very own Charles Murphy that Evan Peters will be joining the ranks of the MCU for WandaVision in a secret role. Now, he could be playing a number of different things. He could be playing a brand new villain, or just another character entirely. However, there is the possibility that he could portray a new version of Wanda’s brother, Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver, last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), portrayed by Aaron Taylor Johnson. This is a popular theory amongst fans because Peters has already portrayed Quicksilver in the “X-Men Fox Universe.” And while I don’t think it will be the exact same character from that specific universe, it could be a sort of “soft reboot” where a character is portrayed by the same actor, but the actor gives a completely different portrayal from the previous iteration. An example of this was JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson during the post credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Simmons had already portrayed Jameson before during the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, but he gave a different portrayal of the character for the MCU. The same could be said for Jamie Foxx’s ‘Electro’ who portrayed the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and will now be returning as the character in Spider-Man 3 (2021). I also discussed the possibility of Morbius (2021) being the film that could connect the SMCU to MCU in my San Quentin Prison Theory. And lastly, we could see the incoporation of characters that have already existed in alternate universe and portray those very same iterations within the MCU. And while there a number of rumored characters out there that could potentially reprise their roles for a spectacular event, the best example I could think of his Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool”, a character that has been known to break the 4th wall from time to time.

we could see some new ones too:

In a Multiverse, anything is possible. We could see the introduction of characters like America Chavez, who’s comic origins are deeply rooted in the concepts of the Multiverse. And since we know that the multiverse bases itself on the premise of time-travel, we could possibly see the introduction of a character known for his time-travel shenanigans, Kang the Conqueror.

CONCLUSION: THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE IS ABOUT TO GET A WHOLE LOT BIGGER

With the concept of the Multiverse finally being explored in the MCU, chances are we might have to change its name from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. Without a doubt, the idea of the concept being introduced to these franchises is something that should excite fans because we might finally be able to see stories that have never could have been possible to bring to the big screen before now, like an MCU adaptation of the Marvel Comics event, Secret Wars. Or who knows? Maybe if the universes align, we might get to see a live-action Spider-Verse film play out. With the multiverse, anything is possible.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Journal: Long-Term Endgame Potential

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Journal: Long-Term Endgame Potential

The last few days have been crazy for Marvel’s Avengers. A lot of details have leaked for the game. We just recently got our first look at War Machine and Black Panther. Shortly after, visuals teased the Inhuman Royal Family and even a gear customization menu. We are only a month into the game’s lifespan. The potential of new heroes, villains, and missions every month is an exciting prospect. It is hard to deny that it has been a bumpy start. Some bugs were even game-breaking. Still, Crystal Dynamics has been very active. They have been releasing patches just within the first few weeks. It gives some hope that the game will start to develop from here on.

I wrote up an article about what I was hoping would be added to the game, which you can find by clicking here. I am slowly getting into developing my builds within the game. While I did play Destiny briefly, I never got too into it, so this is the first time I am heading in with a deep dive. So, after finishing most of the endgame, I do have some more thoughts on how they can fix their current lack of engagement. Many hardcore players may already have invested 100+ hours into the game, so now it becomes a fight to bridge between content updates. I already made a wishlist a while back, so this is more focused on long-term ideas to expand the Endgame concept. They won’t solve current issues but would make the game stand out more among the growing Gaming-as-a-Service market.

    From Mjolnir to Stormbreaker

So, in my wishlist article, I discussed the overall loot issue. Exotics are currently available either through the single-player Mega Hive or multiplayer Elite Hives. They aren’t that much different, so the chances of finding an exotic aren’t high. Crystal Dynamics also nerved the gear tier Legendary to only having two instead of three perks. Now, this isn’t uncommon as they are rebalancing the game. Understandably, this way will not get the best reactions. At first glance, the gear system is very by-the-numbers. We have different levels with a variety of perks. There isn’t much making it stand out, as visual flourishes aren’t applied here like with Destiny. I don’t mind it as I’d rather hate finding a gear I enjoy but have to switch it out for better perks. It probably also isn’t easy to balance with the skins. I started to think about how they could make both sides work and give the gear a better upgrade.

So, I had the idea of adding a unique weapon menu. Most every Avenger has a weapon or unique charm. So, why not create a special gear system around different weapon types. Users can then switch between weapons that have unique functions. You can collect gear to upgrade and develop them. It can also add visual flourishes like Mjolnir’s handle. This would work in conjunction with the regular gear system. Let’s say Thor has the choice between his hammer Mjolnir, or the Stormbreaker ax. You can now outfit each with special runes you grind. They each add different perks. As you upgrade your weapon, more slots become available. Not only does it give them unique attributes but also gives you an incentive to grind.

Plus, with different weapons, you can adjust your playstyle. Crystal Dynamics can also expand the gear system with new weapons per character that add some new ability or perk. Of course, this is just a simplified idea that could potentially add some more depth. It would at least offer a unique aspect to the Avengers gear system to make it stand out. Even Iron Man or Kamala, who don’t have weapons to have special items that could be used as the basis. It’s probably going to take time to program something like this so who knows if we would see this implemented soon.

    Not your Usual Raid

So, we are still waiting for our first official Raid within this game. The A.I.M. Secret Lab will be the first time we have a brand new mission and story element post-launch. It will consist of multiple floors and, hopefully, unique environments. We hope to see more of these kinds of events shortly but so far, this is the only one we are aware of. So, I was wondering what kind of Raid events can we expect. Especially if they would include unique villain encounters beyond the existing Villain Sector missions. At one point, Crystal Dynamics will have to face the challenge of implementing larger enemies like Galactus, Fin Fang Foom, or even the Kree army. So, how do they add something new to make these events stand out while pushing multiplayer.

It could connect to my earlier idea surrounding the Chimera. Right now, it is just a hangout spot for your Strike team. Outside of your shops, there isn’t much to do at them. So, it would be great if you get a chance to develop and individualize your Chimera. You can upgrade it throughout your journey. You can even adapt it to how you want your Helicarrier to function. I would love it if you can also develop a team that is available through your actions with factions. This function can even be used at the various Outposts that you support in the game.

So, why go through all this? Well, what if a Raid sees an attack on the Anthill or the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. base? If you spent time helping them build it, they will give you more time to complete the mission. Also, the mission is unique if you join another person’s strike team. It creates an incentive to revisit raids that could offer different challenges. Raids could also involve multiple teams taking on massive enemies onboard of your Helicarrier. Each one would create a unique focus and support your team throughout the battle. You upgraded your Chimera to be cryo-focused, so it can temporarily slow down Galactus as he attacks. It would add diversity in the gameplay and also incentivize your work to upgrade your Outposts.

    Long-Term Ideas

Right now, these ideas are more about the long-term potential this game has. Right now, Crystal Dynamics needs to focus on adding content to keep people playing. These are major additions that could expand the base game later down the road. We still do not know what the plan is for this game and how it will change in the coming months. Right now, its biggest issue is a lack of content once you finish the last major mission chain. It’s an issue for those that want to stick with the game long-time. I enjoy jumping in for a few rounds now as I enjoy the base gameplay. There are rumors of additional skill trees, which is an exciting prospect. It just shows that we are only at the beginning of what is to come in this game’s future. Hopefully, the wait is not that long as we enter the game’s second month.

Marvel Brazil/LATAM Announce “Black Widow Virtual Run”

It seems Marvel is starting to ramp things up and kick it back into high gear.

Today, the official twitter account for the Latin American branch of Marvel Entertainment announced the first-ever virtual edition of the “Marvel Run”, inspired by the upcoming “Black Widow” film.

Now, basically, Marvel Run is a Marvel-themed marathon where people can choose to run either a 5k/10k race, as a way to exercise themselves and promote a worthy cause. Now, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this Marvel Run has become a virtual one, where people can run the distance they’d like so long as the person is able to take the safety measures necessary to participate healthily.

Now, what is interesting about this year’s Marvel run is based on the upcoming Black Widow film, set to release in November. And with that Marvel Run announcement, came some new promo arts and videos along with an unlisted, updated version of the Final Trailer for Black Widow, uploaded on August 18th of this year from the official Brazil Marvel Entertainment Youtube channel. • Murphy’s Law Podcast: Episode 58

Rumors are swirling that a fly on a wall saw Hailee Steinfeld sign on the dotted line, alleging she has landed the role of Kate Bishop hours after she hadn’t and just a few more hours after it was reported by another site. Can this all be true? Charles and Charles talk about it here!!!!

  • New ‘BLACK WIDOW’ Trailers Cleared to Debut

Last Friday, the British Board of Film Classification cleared two new Black Widow trailers to be released as 12A, meaning suitable for those 12 and above indicating that Marvel Studios almost certainly has plans to release these new looks at the film in the very near future (possibly as soon as today).

As you can see, one of the trailers has a run time of 2:38, pretty standard for a Marvel trailer while the other is much shorter, coming in at 1:44. It’s possible that this second look could be some sort of new feature that the studio has cut to give fans something to tide them over. At this time, Black Widow is set to release on November 6, 2020.

  • Welcome to Murphy’s Multiverse

Welcome to Murphy’s Multiverse. This is something I’ve considered doing for some time now. This allows me to share my thoughts in more than however many characters Twitter gives me and to get back into doing some of the writing I enjoyed so much in my time at MCU Exchange and That Hashtag Show. I plan to use it to host my scoops, our podcast and as a place to continue growing as a thinker and member of an enormous fan community. Be patient as I work through the bugs. Hopefully this is the right amount of fun for all of us.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Black Widow’ Searching For An Ethnically Diverse Male Villain

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Black Widow’ Searching For An Ethnically Diverse Male Villain

Note: This article was originally published by Charles Murphy at That Hashtag Show on March 4, 2019.

Last month it was reported that the script for Marvel Studios Black Widow was being rewritten by Ned Benson. This rewrite was almost certainly responsible for the delay in production which saw the film’s start date get pushed all the way back to June. Should things stay on schedule, principal photography will conclude in October, freeing up stage space in London for Marvel Studios next film, The Eternals to move in.

While the magnitude of Benson’s rewrites are unclear, it does seem that he’s done a bit of character work, reworking some of the films leads and possibly removing others. In November of last year, we gave you the first look at 6 major roles the studio was looking to fill. While most of those roles still exist, it seems that there have been some changes to them, most notably the film’s villain, which could help us deduce his identity.

We originally reported that the studio was looking for an actor of any ethnicity in his 40s to play someone “exciting” to portray the film’s main antagonist. The recent rewrites have given us a little more clarity on this character, though to be honest, we still don’t have much to go on in any effort to figure out just who he is. The studio is now looking for either a Black British or African actor, 30-45, to portray a “tough, dangerous and mysterious” villain.

This new update certainly seems to eliminate Red Guardian and any other Russian villain from contention as they’d likely not have a British accent. It certainly still leaves someone like the Taskmaster in play, but at this point, it really could be anyone.

The film will still feature a second female lead, as we first reported in November, an older European male and female and the “bookish” male for which the studio is seeking a Paul Dano-type. As we originally reported in December, the studio had been meeting with talent for the second female lead (a “kick ass female Bond”), though at this time nobody has signed on for for the role.

With cameras set to roll in roughly 3 months, we should certainly start to see some movement with casting very soon, though you shouldn’t expect it to come through Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige has maintained that they will not officially discuss any of their upcoming films beyond Spider-Man: Far From Home until after that film has been released in theaters, so we could expect a very big presence by the studio at SDCC this year or, more likely, during D23.

  • SCOOP: New Plot Details About ‘Ant-Man & the Wasp’ Revealed

SCOOP: New Plot Details About ‘Ant-Man & the Wasp’ Revealed

Note: This article was originally published by Charles Murphy on MCU Exchange on October 18, 2017.

After years of starts and stops and a change in directors, fans finally got a chance to see Ant-Man hit the big screen in 2015. The film filled in some gaps in the history of the MCU, showed Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne in action, introduced their daughter Hope and gave us Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, one of the most endearing and relatable MCU heroes to date. Filming is well underway on Peyton Reed’s follow up, Ant-Man and The Wasp, and through set photos and some scoops, we’ve only been able to scrape together very little info about what to expect from the film…until now!

A source of ours has chimed in with a few details about the plot of the film that, in light of the set photos we’ve seen and where the last film left off, seem to make some sense. We are told that the film will take place over a very short amount of time and will see the leads begin the film in very different situations.

From the first photos of Rudd on set fans have been curious about the timeline of the film. Given Lang’s inclusion in the events in Germany, his incarceration in the Raft and subsequent breakout, fans have wondered how he’s operating in public during Ant-Man and The Wasp. According to our source, the film takes place after Lang’s escape from prison and when it begins, Lang finds himself on house arrest. While that sounds bad for a superhero, it seems to be just fine with Lang who is content spending more time with his daughter, Cassie. It seems the events of Captain America: Civil War have soured Scott on the prospects of putting on the suit. When the film begins, Scott Lang is Ant-Man no more. How Scott was sentenced to house-arrest despite destroying an airport and breaking out of prison is unknown at this point.

While Scott finds himself adjusting to his new life, Hank and Hope are hard at work trying to find a way to bring Jan back from the Quantum Realm. The father-daughter team are none too pleased with Lang for taking off to Germany in the middle of their work have spent a lot of time working in their lab. They are using Pym Particles to keep their lab small and mobile (maybe similar to Ant-Man Vol. 2 Annual where Lang’s helmet actually had a lab inside it!) because Hank and Hope will spend a good deal of the film on the run, with all types of folks out for them. Though the source didn’t go into detail about the roles the Walton Goggin’s Sonny Burch, Hannah John-Kaman’s Ghost or Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, it’s not crazy to think that they’re all involved in the hunt for Hank and Hope at some point.

Set pics have revealed that Lang will ultimately re-team with Hope and that, at some point, Hank is all suited up in FBI gear, so there’s certainly an unknown bridge from what our source shared to those points. However, with so little out there about the film so far, it’s nice to have some idea of what to expect when the film opens. It sounds like we are getting a very intimate film that takes place in a VERY short amount of time and one that is, at least in some part, separate from the major events of Infinity War!
