‘Superman and Lois’: How Clark Kent Puts The Man In Man of Steel

In many iterations of Superman, there have been stories that have shaped how he deals with complicated choices. Specifically, when it comes to remaining in control. In stories involving Red Kryptonite, we’ve seen the impact of those scenarios. Even Injusticewhere the Joker influences him to kill Lois Lane is as far as the scope goes. In Superman & Lois‘ latest episode Clark has to deal with his own lack of control that is capable of destroying the world.

Superman & Lois Easter Eggs are a Love Letter to Every Era of DC History - Den of Geek

Regular human beings who have great wealth and power aren’t inclined to have control. They’re known to indulge and revel in the fruits of their labor. Superman has all the power someone can only dream of owning. Yet, he’s human enough to control it for the greater good, which isn’t easy. While he was under the influence of his brother Tal-Rho, there was a moment for Clark where it felt good to let go.

I’m not saying I want this to be true. I wish it wasn’t, but it felt good. It felt really, really good. That feeling worries me.

As Clark pleads with Lois that the kryptonite weapons should not be buried, this is the humanity that exists within the Kryptonian. Part of heroism is sacrifice, but an even bigger part is self-awareness. It’s easy to think that someone like Superman is infallible, and Lois Lane’s belief in her husband is admirable. In a way, it’s easy to get caught up in the praise and adulation that’s given to the Man of Tomorrow.

Yet, the greater power that Clark exhibits here, is one of understanding his own journey. Jonathan Kent taught Clark about controlling his gifts, knowing that one mistake could come at an unimaginable cost. Clark has lived with this for years upon years, yet with all of those lessons, there is no hubris.Eventually, Superman trusted John Henry Irons to hold onto the Kryptonite weapons after learning of his fate. In a parallel world, Superman was corrupted. He and other Kryptonians took over the world, including the horrifying act that led to the Man of Tomorrow killing Lois.

John showed up in this current world, wanting to make sure that the same thing wouldn’t happen again. Eventually, he was convinced that this Superman was different. It’s a credit to Clark for ignoring the praise and belief around him and doing the right thing. There is always a chance that someone or something could take control. In his vulnerability, Clark decided that a Superman could not. He put his trust into humanity, and it has made him the hero that he’s always been.

  • Namor Connection Teased in ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Casting

Namor Connection Teased in ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Casting

It looks like Shuma-Gorath might not be the only tentacle monster in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. A listing by actress Yenifer Molina reveals she has a role in Sam Raimi‘s film. What stands out is that her character’s name is Gargantos 2. Long-time comics fans might recognize it as a sea monster under the control of the Lemurian known as Naga. They only appeared in 1969’s Sub-Mariner #13 and X-Factor Annual #4 in 1989 but vanished since.

Its inclusion in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is quite a surprise. We still have no idea how Strange will travel through the multiverse and if each pocket dimension gets a unique arc. Her acting credits include minor roles as an office worker in Detective Pikachu and a waitress on HBO Max’s Tom and Jerry. So, this role might only have a minor part in the film. We don’t know how many universes the doctor will travel through. The creature’s backstory connects to Namor. So, it would make sense that they’d appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will potentially feature the character.

The Funko leaks hinted at Supreme and Defender Variants of Doctor Strange. So, they may end up joining their multiversal counterparts in their story. Moviegoers might get introduced to the concept of the Serpent Crown, which got tossed into a pocket dimension for safekeeping. It got created by the Elder Gods, which could connect back to Shuma-Gorath. Perhaps it is the McGuffin necessary to stop the Devourer God from taking over the multiverse.

  • Marvel Studios Elders of the Universe: Bringing Eccentric Legends to the MCU

Marvel Studios Elders of the Universe: Bringing Eccentric Legends to the MCU

Not all things in the MCU are just as they appear in the comics. Civil War didn’t see Bill Foster killed by a clone of Thor; Yondu was a space hillbilly rather than one of the last survivors of the Badoon slaughter of Centauri IV; Ego fathered Peter Quill and considered himself a Celestial rather than and Elder of the Universe. The Elders themselves are a pretty interesting and loosely associated group of incredibly powerful beings who have popped up randomly over the years in the comics to partake in some shenanigans before disappearing again, sometimes for decades. To date, we’ve seen two of their number show up in the MCU: Benicio del Toro’s Collector and Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. While neither Elder has played a huge role, their roles have been memorable, mostly for the eccentricities of the actors who portrayed them. del Toro and Goldblum aren’t the only quirky actors out there and, as it turns out, there are plenty more Elders who could show up and allow some of Hollywood’s quirkiest talents to join the MCU.

    Drew Barrymore as the Caregiver

Keep in mind that the goal is for these Elders to be part of an interesting side plot for our leads. Rubanna Quormo, the Caregiver, has only made a handful of appearances in the comics and would fit nicely as a character that one of the MCU’s leads has to interact with in order to get something accomplished. Mark Gruenwald created the Caregiver during his run on Quasar, a character James Gunn once teased might be joining the MCU. I’m sure it’s too late now, but sneaking Barrymore into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and having her character interact with Drax might be worth the rewrite! Barrymore has managed to stay relevant to pop culture for 40+ years and would certainly have a blast in the role.

    Steve Buscemi as The Runner

Like a lot of speedsters, the Elder known as The Runner is annoying as hell. When the world moves at a snail’s pace compared to your mind, it’s pretty tough. Go through that for 5 billion years, as Gilpetperdon did, and you might go a little crazy, especially if you’re immortal. This one’s a bit ironic because The Runner is typically displayed as being immaculately chiseled and covered in gold; Buscemi hasn’t hit the gym in a while and is as pasty white as it comes. But give me pasty Buscemi in a loin cloth and let one of Hollywood’s best character actors go to work while racing the Silver Surfer through the cosmos.

    Gary Busey as The Astronomer

Simply put, Busey is a mad man. He embraces and owns it as well. It’s absolutely his thing now. In lining up these potential roles, it’s not always about a perfect physical match and in this case it’s all about embracing the crazy and no Elder ever hatched a crazier plan than Seginn Gallio, the Astronomer. Alongside the Grandmaster (just imagine Busey and Goldblum sharing scenes), the Astronomer planned to kill Galactus in the hopes that his death would kill everything in the universe, including the Elders themselves.

    Crispin Glover as the In-Betweener

Going all the way back to his perfectly awkward performance as George McFly in Back to the Future (one of Kevin Feige’s FAVORITE films, by the way), Glover has always made fans feel just a little bit uncomfortable, including in his performance as the Thin Man in the Charlie’s Angels franchise. The In-Betweener’s entire existence is based in being uncomfortable as serves as the synthesis of the cosmos’ essential concepts. He is life and death; order and chaos; powerful and weak. This is the MCU character Glover may have been born to play and one that would probably give the younger audience members nightmares if he were to show up in something like Doctor Strange 3.

    John Malkovich as The Gardener

Malkovich was the man who inspired the creation of this list and so it’s fitting that he lands here as the Gardener, the being responsible for sowing life all over the galaxy. Ord Zyonz is a character who would fit nicely into something like an Eternals sequel or even the second season of Loki and there’s even an arc where the character is driven to madness, which puts him directly in Malkovich’s wheelhouse. Malkovich, like Goldblum, is a national treasure and we need to get him in the MCU immediately.

    Charlie Sheen as The Champion

If you said you know someone who has lived a wilder life than Charlie Sheen, you’re probably lying. The man’s highs and lows are about as consistent as the tides but he manages to persevere and there’s one thing he’s know for: WINNING! None of the Elders do more winning than Tryco Slatterus, aka the Champion. Sure, he’ll probably have to get in the weight room for a bit to bulk up to Tryco’s size (I don’t think steroids would be the worst thing he’s put in his body), but let’s paint him blue, spike up the hair and let The Wild Thing back out.

    Christopher Walken as The Stranger

The idea of this feature and this list was to identify potential MCU roles for some of Hollywood’s strangest personalities and arguably there are none stranger than Walken. Walken is a legend in Hollywood and, make no mistake, knows exactly how strange he is. With that in mind, why not cast him as the Elder who has made the biggest impact on the MCU and have him show up a few times over the next several years? The Stranger has ties to mutants, Thor, the Silver Surfer, Secret Wars and more. so let’s get Walken on board and let that unsettling cadence take over.

The bulk of this list has lived either a long or hard life (both in some cases) and, unfortunately, won’t be around forever. Let’s pull the trigger on getting this band together so we can get them all on screen for one glorious MCU moment.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Composer Natalie Holt on ‘Loki’s Unique Sound, Ride of the Valkyries, and the Simon Cowell Incident

EXCLUSIVE: Composer Natalie Holt on ‘Loki’s Unique Sound, Ride of the Valkyries, and the Simon Cowell Incident

Loki is made up of a lot of incredible things – the writing, acting, world-building, production design, costume, cinematography – but not the least of which is Natalie Holt‘s distinct music. Holt’s kooky take on Marvel’s usually grandiose sonic palette has been the talking point among fans for many weeks now. The score is easily the best of three Marvel Disney+ shows; an alchemic concoction of Norwegian tradition, analog synthesizers, and operatic Wagnerian motifs. I had the privilege of interviewing Holt this week and we got to talk about her process behind the show and her mischievous TV appearance on Britain’s Got Talent.

Despite the music being so tightly weaved, the production process was anything but as COVID forced Holt to just work remotely on the project alongside everyone else. Even crazier is the fact that she still hasn’t met any of her collaborators to this day. When asked about what the process was like, she had this to say:

It was sad. I wish I could have been in the room with everyone, especially with the orchestra. I would have loved to sit there, watch, and feel the vibe of the room. We had music meetings every Wednesday for six months. I feel like I got to know the entire Marvel music team yet I’ve never met them until now. It’s weird how Zoom could still facilitate those creative collaborations.

Tom Hiddleston‘s unique take on the God of Mischief is so built into the character’s DNA that it’s no surprise Holt looked to the actor to get an understanding of how to approach creating a brand new musical theme for him. Despite having a short window to get it done, the process for Holt seemed fortuitous as she quickly had a grasp on what to do and given how Marvel quickly jumped on board with her ideas.

I read the script and I had seen all those films anyway so I had an idea of how Tom played the character. I’m very much inspired by his over-the-top grand theatrical performances. I literally came up with that theme for him in the pitch to get the job. So that was there right from the beginning and then all the other themes like the TVA and Mobius theme came later on.

I got the job and had a month when Kate Herron got back from filming the show but I hadn’t started working on the show. I had just spent all this time coming up with this suite of themes. But everyone approved that suite fairly quickly. Everyone was on board with the direction I wanted to take.

As far as external influences go, Holt cites A Clockwork Orange and some classical pieces as being crucial in figuring out which approach to take with the God of Mischief.

And like I said, the way Tom Hiddleston performs and the theme I made for him is somewhat rooted in the classical tradition like Ride of the Valkyries. I wanted to put something in there that made you think of those big classical works. I was playing around with Mozart-inspired licks.

The Loki score is rife with an array of sounds, ranging from traditional Norwegian instruments to analog synthesizers. Holt also talked about she came about choosing certain instruments.

It was instinctive, I guess. I had this sound in my head and it was a matter of finding my way there. I heard those Norwegian folk instruments in a concert a few years ago but I had that sound always in the back of my mind. They’re sort of like a string instrument but they’ve got this magical, mystical sound that seemed to go really well with Loki’s past with his mother and yearning. I also never wanted to play it straight like, “Oh here’s a piece of basic orchestral music.” It had always had to have a twist for me.

Like all MCU properties, there’s a hefty amount of callbacks and references to previous films in Loki. Holt shed some light as to how they revisited some of the more familiar musical motifs and how supportive Marvel was with her unique vision.

There are a couple of scenes like when Loki wakes up in the Ep. 4 credits. That was Alan Silvestri piece that was in the temp. We all liked it very much that we used it as the basis. And then you have the beginning in New York, that’s also Alan Silvestri. It was in the temp and it worked so well. It was so cool to segue from Alan into our world. I had Alan Silvestri stems and I got to blend that into my piece. He’s a legend.

But there wasn’t any, “You need to continue the Marvel legacy.” It was just like, “Do whatever you want and make it as unique as you can.” That was really freeing and amazing.

And lastly, I got to ask her about the incident she was involved in several years ago where she pelted Simon Cowell with eggs on-air during a taping of Britain’s Got Talent. She was gracious enough to humor my question and said this about her initial worry that she would no longer have a career after the incident.

I don’t what I expected [laughs]. Like Loki, we all do mischievous things while we’re younger. I’m glad it didn’t affect my career and that I’m able to work. I think my career hasn’t been derailed that much.

Apart from Loki, Holt has an upcoming Netflix film she scored titled Fever Dream, which comes out later this year.

  • Grace Fulton to Replace Michelle Borth as Super-Powered Mary in ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’

Grace Fulton to Replace Michelle Borth as Super-Powered Mary in ‘Shazam: Fury of The Gods’

The first Shazam film took its inspiration from the character’s golden age adventures. It brought the character to life in all his goofy and heroic glory. Towards the end of the film, we saw Billy Batson, powered up as Shazam, struggling to face Doctor Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins. He couldn’t finish them alone. So, he offered to share the powers with his foster siblings. Upon grabbing the staff and saying the name, audiences got introduced to a whole new roster of heroes.

With Shazam Fury of The Gods, most assumed that all the actors would be returning from the first film. With today’s reveal by director David Sandberg of the family’s brand new costumes, many noticed a new yet familiar face suited up alongside them. As confirmed by Sandberg, actress Grace Fulton, who plays Mary Bromfield in the film, will now be playing both versions of her character, replacing actress Michelle Borth.

No reasoning for this change was given by either Sandberg or Fulton. The recasting wasn’t announced by the studio either. So, it seems like a deliberate little secret to announce alongside the suit reveal. It’s not an unwelcome one, as Fulton‘s bubbly personality is perfect for both roles. She was the closest in age to her powered-up version, which made the casting of another actress a curious decision. This seems to be the only recasting for the film with the rest of the Shazamily returning to play their respective powered-up roles from the first film. We cannot wait to see what she brings to the character.

    ‘El Muerto’

    Premiere: TBD

In late April 2022, a trade report announced that Sony was going ahead with a new feature film focusing on El Muerto, a Marvel character that has appeared in less than half a dozen comic issues.

Bad Bunny, who is set to star in Sony’s Bullet Train, will be playing the titular character Juan-Carlos Sanchez. Little more is known about the project since it seems to be in very, very early development.

  • New ‘Shang-Chi’ Marvel Legends Leak Offers More Details on Awkwafina’s Katy

New ‘Shang-Chi’ Marvel Legends Leak Offers More Details on Awkwafina’s Katy

After months of clamoring from fans, the trailer for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is finally here offering our first real look into the MCU’s world of martial arts. The film will see the big-screen debut of Simu Liu as the titular hero. He must face his past that he once ran away from and confront his father Wenwu, better known as the villainous Mandarin. Awkwafina will play the character Katy, who seems to be Shang-Chi’s good friend. A new toy leak has revealed a Target exclusive figure that will join their upcoming Marvel Legends line for Shang Chi. The figure in question is Awkwafina’s character Katy, whose description details that she is “Shang-Chi’s oldest friend, is free-spirited and fiercely loyal”. The toy teases a very different character from what we saw in the trailer.

Not much was known about Katy and this look is certainly a new one for her. It may hint at her character having a secret past that will be explored in the film. longside the figure, it seems that she comes with a Dijiang, a creature seen in previous leaks alongside Legos, and puzzled many fans. It’s unknown what the connection is to the character but quite possibly has a stronger connection to Awkwafina‘s Katy.

Marvel Studio’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is currently set to release in theaters on September 3rd, 2021 coming from director Destin Daniel Cretton. The film is set to star Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Ronny Chieng, and Florian Munteanu.

  • Blade Creator Marv Wolfman “Looking Forward” to Seeing the MCU Reboot…Next Year

Blade Creator Marv Wolfman “Looking Forward” to Seeing the MCU Reboot…Next Year

Comic Book writer and Blade creator, Marv Wolfman, took to social media yesterday to express his excitement over seeing his comic book creations coming to life in other forms of media beyond the pages of the comic book. With the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, “the writer-daddy” of characters like Cyborg and Deathstroke talked about how he was looking forward to the film’s debut on HBO Max, reminiscing on his past of creating those characters and feeling “gratified” about managing to live out his childhood dreams. Among his statements, he talked about how many of his dreams came true with last year’s premiere of Crisis On Infinite Earths on the CW, next week with Justice League, and next year with Blade. You can read his entire statement below.

Now that last part is very interesting as Wolfman believes that Blade might premiere in 2022. If history has taught us anything it’s that not every comic book creator is always entirely aware of the plans for their creations, so this is certainly not iron-clad proof that we’ll see the vampire slayer next year. However, our very own Charles Murphy has talked a lot about this before, stating that Blade is set to start production sometime later this year. With casting already well underway and the playwright Stacey Osei-Koffour penning the script for the MCU, it’s becoming more likely than not that we might see Mahershala Ali debut as the famous vampire slayer on the big screen sometime in 2022.

  • Kevin Feige Won’t Say No To Another Season of ‘WandaVision’

Kevin Feige Won’t Say No To Another Season of ‘WandaVision’

The minds behind WandaVision are making the press rounds this week to dissect the big moments that the show did and did not make good on and to talk about what’s next for the characters. We know that we’ll see the newly christened Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and that Monica Rambeau has a big part to play in Captain Marvel 2 but beyond that, we don’t really know what’s next for the rest of the core characters from the show, leaving fans wondering if we might see a second season of the streaming hit. Comicbook.com asked Marvel Studios One-Above-All Kevin Feige about the possibility of another season of WandaVision and while he didn’t say no, he definitely did not say yes, either.

Elizabeth Olsen and Jac Schaeffer on Wanda Maximoff's Grief and Journey to the Scarlet Witch | Marvel

We are developing all of these shows the way we’re developing our movies. In other words, when we start with a movie, we hope there’s a part two; we hope there’s a part three. But we aren’t factoring that into part one. We are trying to make something that hooks people enough and that people enjoy enough and want to revisit enough, that they want to see the story continue. So that is the way we’re proceeding on television as well.

I’ve been at Marvel for too long to say a definite no or definite yes to anything in regards to your question about another season of WandaVision but some of the shows that we’re about to start filming, we are keeping in mind a structure that would lead into a Season Two and a Season Three in a more direct way than, say, a show like WandaVision which clearly goes into a feature. But it is new. That’s part of the fun, exciting, adrenaline-boosting creativity that we’re able to do, thanks to Disney+, and really to figure out new ways of storytelling. Perhaps someday we’ll chart out five seasons of a show, but really we’re focusing on delivering the best seasons we can one at a time so far.

Reading between the lines of Feige’s comments, it seems less likely that WandaVision ends up with another season than something like Loki or She-Hulk and that seems directly related to the fact that WandaVision was designed to move Wanda’s story along from one film (Avengers: Endgame) to another (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) while some of the other series are seemingly being designed with future seasons in mind. Given the unique structure of season one, It’s hard to imagine what another season of WandaVision might be about at this point given the way things were left but maybe there’s a way to spend some more time with many of the same characters in another, differently names series down the road.
