In December 2020, Murphy’s Multiverse scooped that Marvel Studios had a Nomad project in development. Though the studio continued to keep the project alive behind the scenes, it ultimately joined countless other projects on the scrap heap, with many doubting it was ever truly in the pipeline at all.
However, in 2025 former X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo detailed the studio’s plans for the project, claiming the studio couldn’t quite crack their The Man in High Castle-inspired story. Now, ahead of his return in Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Evans–who would have starred in the project–reveals that Nomad was one of a dozen times he and Marvel discussed returning to the MCU.
In Captain America #180, Steve Rogers changed up his look and took on the mantle of Nomad after learning the U.S. Government to which he has devoted his life is run by the Secret Empire. An adaptation of this version of Rogers appeared in Avengers: Infinity War. Over the years, several other characters went by the name of Nomad, including the character Jack Monroe who went on to appear in dozens of issues of Captain America, lead his own solo title and join the Thunderbolts.
“When we finished Endgame in 2018, Lou [D’Esposito] and Kevin [Feige] took me to dinner and they were like, ‘We’d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,‘” Evans recalled in an interview with EW. “And I said, ‘Okay, well, what do you got?’ They showed me a pitch, and it was a great pitch, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t feel right at the time. I kind of wanted to… I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it. But I just said, ‘Please keep pitching.’”
Though it wasn’t made explicitly clear, it sounds as though Evans’ Nomad films would have worked to fill gaps between Avengers: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, honoring Steve’s legacy without cheapening his victory in Endgame.
While Evans turned down over a dozen standalone concepts over the course of eight years to safeguard Steve’s emotional Endgame ending, the tipping point arrived when he learned that Robert Downey Jr. was making a shocking return to the MCU as Victor von Doom.
