Fans have spent years questioning exactly how the gritty, brutally violent tone of Frank Castle could possibly align with the bright, four-quadrant energy of the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe. The global press conference for Spider-Man: Brand New Day provided an answer, as Jon Bernthal and director Destin Daniel Cretton discussed the strategic directives behind integrating The Punisher into Tom Holland’s latest theatrical chapter.
The pairing is a long time coming, particularly significant as both Holland and Bernthal share deeply personal creative histories, having slapped together audition tapes for their respective MCU roles in a dinky room in Ireland almost 10 years ago.
Enormously Protective: Ensuring No Compromise
Bernthal admitted that he was enormously protective of Frank Castle, the Punisher fans, and the character’s legacy. The question of if it could work was a real concern for everyone, including Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige, and Cretton himself. Bernthal emphasized that the creative solution was rooted in respecting the audience and diving directly into the tonal conflict.
“I often think in art, when you get to sort of the crux of an issue, if you dive into it, if you don’t try to avoid it, if you don’t try to run away from it… you get something really great,” Bernthal stated. He continued, “I think what we set out to do is to make it believable that the Punisher could walk out of one of those TV-MA shows and onto this set and vice versa. And I think you’re going to get that“.
Holland further validated the seamless integration, confirming that Cretton managed the tonal shift so masterfully that the character isn’t compromised in any way—remaining the same scary, intense Frank Castle fans expect. “I am so excited for people to see the relationship between Spider-Man and Frank,” Holland added.
Bernthal and Holland are currently sharing the screen in The Odyssey ahead of the July 31st release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
