One of the unfortunate consequences of the unraveling of Marvel Studios Multiverse Saga plans was the impact the pivot to Doctor Doom as the villain had on Shang-Chi. With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton originally set to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it was reported that Shang-Chi would’ve been one of the film’s main leads. When Cretton took the reigns on what eventually became Spider-Man: Brand New Day, that move seemed to delay a Shang-Chi sequel, leaving star Simu Liu sidelined despite there being plenty of potential stories to tell.
Five years after making his debut, Liu is finally headed back to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday and, it Cretton has his way, that won’t be the last time fans see the character.
“I also would love to see Shang-Chi 2,” said Cretton when asked about the sequel. “I was talking to Dave Callaham, our writer, about it just a few weeks ago, so fingers crossed.”
With Cretton, who is already working on a second season of Wonder Man, likely to continue the studio’s Spidey ship, it’s unclear when it’s likely he’ll get around to a Shang-Chi sequel but it is encouraging to know it’s still on his mind.
