  • First Look at Granny Goodness in Latest ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Teaser

First Look at Granny Goodness in Latest ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Teaser

The build-up to Zack Snyder’s Justice League has been monumental. For a while now, Snyder has been teasing the inclusion of Darkseid in his film. At one point, the character got cut from the theatrical cut of the film aside from a few name drops from Parademon grunts. We got our first look at the lord of Apokolips back at DC Fandome, and from there, fans weren’t sure just how much we would see of the character, as his uncle Steppenwolf remains the primary foe of the film. Now that the countdown has begun, it makes us wonder if we get more teases of how much of the New Gods we can expect. Snyder has dropped short teasers every day to build up to its release. It seems fans are about to get a lot more than they bargained for, as the newest teaser provides a much better look at Darkseid alongside his closest and trusted confidants.

The short teaser offered us our first possible look at a classic New God that’s commanded the legions of Parademons and Female Furies since their very inception. In a short glimpse at what looks to be a throne room on the planet of Apokolips, we see an armor-clad Darkseid joined by Desaad. Now, the big surprise is on his other side, as it confirms the first live-action appearance of Granny Goodness. It makes sense for Darkseid to keep her close by, especially during times of war. She was the one that trains and commands his army, so she is a powerful ally to have. It looks like the film is set to feature much more of the New Gods than previously seen before. Zack Snyder’s Justice League starts streaming on March 18th exclusively on HBO Max.

  • Zawe Ashton Set to Play the Antagonist in ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Zawe Ashton Set to Play the Antagonist in ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Yesterday, The Illuminerdi broke the exclusive that there were 2 new roles headed for Captain Marvel 2. Marvel was reportedly looking to fill one of the roles with Zawe Ashton. Now, Deadline was able to confirm the Illuminerdi’s exclusive and provide additional details regarding her role. It seems that Ashton will be co-starring as the antagonist opposite to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. She will be joining the likes of Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau in the MCU, and Iman Vellani, who will be taking up the role of Ms. Marvel. The film will be directed by Nia DaCosta.

Now, who exactly Ashton will portray in this film remains to be seen. However, there certainly is a great interest to see what her character might be and how this film will connect and play out in the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. Given that this film is already set to have 3 powerful heroes, all of which have handled the “Marvel” mantle in the comics, I would not be surprised to see Ashton portray one of Captain Marvel’s greatest adversaries in the comics, Karla Sofen aka Moonstone. As I mentioned previously if your film is going to have 3 characters that have handled the “Marvel” mantle, why not introduce a villain who also posed with the Marvel mantle.

Captain Marvel 2 is set to premiere in theaters November 11, 2022.

  • Billy Takes Center Stage in ‘WANDAVISION’s All-New Halloween Spooktacular!

Billy Takes Center Stage in ‘WANDAVISION’s All-New Halloween Spooktacular!

For the Children! Ever since the Disney Plus Expanding the Universe documentary hinted at the arrival of Wanda and Vision’s twins in WandaVision, fans have eagerly awaited the MCU debuts of Wiccan and Speed and this week, in Episode 6, we saw Tommy and Billy’s powers come into play for the first time. While the episode made great use of the super speed of both Tommy and his “uncle Pietro”, it was the awakening of Billy’s powers that really hit hard…and might be a key to what’s happening in the series.

    Image result for marvel wiccan

The events surrounding the birth of the twins in Episode 3 were certainly abnormal, up to and including the fact that nobody, including Wanda, knew she was having twins. When Tommy arrived, several minutes went by before Wanda became aware that another bun was in the oven and there was something very disconcerting about Wanda during his delivery. I can’t quite explain it, but we all watched it and we all know what I mean. So to some extent,  Billy was the bonus baby but with the nature of the twins already in question, I’m beginning to wonder if he was actually there all along or if his birth was a function of Vision choosing to name the first baby Tommy.

As I discussed last week, there’s something very strange about Agnes’ interest in the Maximoff twins, an interest that predates their conception and became very obvious in Episode 5. No offense to Tommy or to fans of the character, but as cool of a character as Speed is and as much as I look forward to seeing him develop over the next several years in the MCU, Billy has always kind of outshined his brother in the comics and it’s possible that a similar fate may be in store for the twins in the MCU. In the comics, Billy is destined to become one of Earth’s most powerful mages, the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth and, eventually, the all-powerful Demiurge, a being essentially responsible for maintaining the universe. Short version: Billy is fated to wield an enormous amount of power. And with great power comes great effort by those trying to steal it. And this episode showcased that, even if it was a bit more subtle than we’d like. While Tommy ran around with his asshole uncle, Billy’s ability to sense that his father was in danger was a far more impressive display of power for a kid who only found out he had powers in that moment. As cool as super-speed is, precognition and clairvoyance are the types of abilities wielded by witches, warlocks and make him a prime target for any power-hungry baddies out there.

In the comics, Billy’s powers were lusted after by Loki but I don’t think that’s the case here. As Arlyn Murphy mentioned in her Primer, it’s becoming more clear that while we are made to believe Wanda is in control, that she’s not actually the one in the driver’s seat, which means someone is using her power and, at this point, I think they’re using it to get to Billy’s. Who was talking about Wanda having kids before Wanda had kids? Who has been responsible for Billy (and Tommy…sorry Tommy) choosing to age up, making him old enough to begin to realize his power and “speed” him on his way to becoming omnipotent? All signs point towards Agnes being the power-hungry witch pulling the strings and out to either take Billy’s power for herself or manipulate him into using it for her (maybe that’s what is going on with Wanda?). Of course, this could be going totally down the wrong path, but with only 3 episodes left to go, we’ll all find out together very soon.

  • Netflix Unveils ‘Godzilla Singular Point’s King of Monsters Design

Netflix Unveils ‘Godzilla Singular Point’s King of Monsters Design

Around four months ago, Netflix unveiled that they are working on a brand new anime focused on Godzilla. The series will follow after their last adaptation, the Godzilla: Planet of Monsters film trilogy. In the announcement, we got a small glimpse at the design of the titular King of Monsters. They pulled in some heavy hitters, as his entire look is created by the legendary Ghibli animator Eiji Yamamori. The first tease already showcased quite a bit of detail that is going into the iconic design. Now, after a long wait, they unveiled our first look at his complete design. They also revealed that Yuji Kaneko colored this design to finish off his iconic look.

I love the design. It feels like a combination of Toho’s classic with some influence from 2014’s American incarnation. His body shape is interesting, as they went out of their way to make his legs and tail massive. The design makes it look like he is part of a Ghibli film, which makes me wonder what a Ghibli film would look like made by Hayao Miyazaki. I love the design, so I am curious to see him in action. Godzilla Singular Point will also feature the work of Blue Exorcist’s Kazue Kato for the human characters. We did get a trailer last year that teased this design in action. It also confirmed that the monster designs are all going to be in 3D. It is certainly turning into a must-watch for any Godzilla fan out there.

  • Square-Enix Releases 10 Minutes of ‘Nier: Replicant’ Gameplay Footage

Square-Enix Releases 10 Minutes of ‘Nier: Replicant’ Gameplay Footage

After a long wait, we finally got some brand new gameplay footage for the hotly anticipated remake of Nier Replicant. The original got released on the PlayStation 3, but it wasn’t until the sequel Nier Automata put the franchise on the map. After its success, many wanted to revisit the game that started it all. Sadly, it is nier-ly impossible to get your hands on the original copies. There is also the confusing aspect that the Western release was different from the Japanese version. We got a version titled Nier Gestalt, as the studio feared Western players wouldn’t connect with a young Anime character, so he was aged up, and the game released with two different versions. After a long wait, the official Nier Twitter account was nice enough to share 10 minutes of brand new gameplay for the upcoming remake.

    https://twitter.com/NieRGame/status/1360227407488110595

The game looks beautiful, and the revamped combat system certainly seems to take cues from Automata. It makes sense, as Platinum Games’ work on that game elevated its gameplay to a whole new level. The updated graphics also make the game truly shine. It is also our first official look at Kaine, who plays an essential part in the game’s iconic story. I love that they showcase one of the game’s boss battles to highlight how far the game has come from its original release in 2010. The entire franchise is a spin-off of a joke ending from the original Drakengard game. As such, it is canonically tied to that game franchise, which hasn’t seen a new game since 2013’s Drakengard 3. I cannot wait to get my hands on the game once it releases in April, which hopefully might also release alongside the Western release of the mobile game Nier Reincarnation, which is also still awaiting an official release date.

  • Insomniac Announces ‘Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’ Release Date

Insomniac Announces ‘Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’ Release Date

Finally, one of the biggest PlayStation 5 releases has received a release date. Insomniac finally revealed that their next game Ratched & Clank: Rift Apart will release June 11th of this year. It comes right after their latest release, Spider-Man: Miles Morales launched alongside the PS5. The latest entry in the Ratchet & Clank series will be only available on the next-generation console.

It’s the return of the Ratchet & Clank franchise since 2016’s re-imaging of the original game. That was also released simultaneously to promote their first film adaptation. Insomniac Games has since been working on a wide variety of games. 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man is a standout in their long-history of releases. The studio started its career with the iconic Spyro the Dragon franchise before tackling Ratchet & Clank in 2002. Rift Apart will now be its tenth mainline entry that doesn’t include the various spin-offs.

Hopefully, this release date also means that we will get a brand new trailer showing off the new Lombax character that got briefly teased in the PS5 showcase sometime before the console launch. The game will make full use of the latest generation’s technology to ensure fast loading times, as our main character jumps between the different dimensions. Insomniac also teased an entirely new arsenal of weapons that will be sure to add a lot of joy for players. They also teased a lot of deeper connections to previous games for longtime fans. So, we can’t wait to get our hands on it once it releases.

  • Disney+ Surpassed 90 Million Subscribers Even Before ‘WandaVision’ Released

Disney+ Surpassed 90 Million Subscribers Even Before ‘WandaVision’ Released

Disney+ has proven to be quite the powerhouse in the streaming wars. As of January 2nd, the subscription service has reached a new record high subscription number with 94.9 million. It has risen by 8 million in just one month, as it was at around 86.8 million the last time we got an update on it. As such, its growth already surpassed the service’s original prediction of 90 million in four years. It is a massive win after Disney has announced a slew of brand new originals heading to the service throughout 2021. The release of The Mandalorian’s second season and Pixar’s Soul were essential boosters in the last months. Especially the latter, which dominated streaming numbers during Christmas. These numbers also don’t include the subscribers gained after they released the first Marvel Studios original series, WandaVision.

The streaming service has seen substantial growth that is not going to slow down anytime soon. Variety does point out that 30% of its subscribers are through India and Indonesia’s Disney+ Hotstar subscription model, which comes at a lower price. They are also about to launch the STAR brand in selected markets. So, the service will see a slight increase in the pricing in those regions. Still, In the latest financial meeting, they stated that they aren’t expecting profitability until 2024, but the current increase is still impressive. It’ll be interesting to see if WandaVision managed to push the subscription beyond the milestone of 100 million. Marvel Studios plans to release around six shows this year, so they will certainly see an increase over the coming months. December will also kick-off with the first The Mandalorian spin-off that is certain to draw in some attention. 2021 is going to be a big year for the service and an indicator how fast its growth will continue in its second year.

  • ‘BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’ To End With Upcoming Eighth Season

‘BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’ To End With Upcoming Eighth Season

After an immensely successful run on two separate networks, fan-favorite cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine will end with its eighth season. The series focused on the daily antics of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct and featured a diverse cast led by SNL-alum Andy Samberg and Emmy Award winner Andre Braugher. After an initial five-season run on Fox, Nine-Nine found itself on the off-season chopping block. Luckily for the procedural, it had managed to garner a large fanbase.

As such, a sky-rocketing amount of views on streaming combined with a loud campaign on social media led to a revival at NBC. Two more seasons followed, with the upcoming 10-episodes getting delayed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. It looks like that season will end the long-running comedy, which is still waiting to return to production. Samberg has gone on record to state that filming will be back on track “fairly soon”. Series creator, Dan Goor, had the following to say regarding the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned. […] Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”

Nine-Nine often found itself at the center of popular culture, as it pushed boundaries when it came to both POC and LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream television. Despite this, there was intense debate online about whether or not the show should continue following last year’s cultural re-evaluation in the wake of BLM protests against police brutality. Star Terry Crews subsequently revealed that the series’ writers had trashed the scripts previously written for season 8, opting to create new stories that addressed the current social climate. It’s unknown if this played a role in ending Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s comforting to know that this time, the ending will be on its terms.
