SDCC: Marvel Studios Still Hints at ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’s MCU Connection

San Diego Comic-Con has given us its first Marvel Studios panel that unveiled a glimpse behind the scenes of the various animated shows. Among them is the reveal of Spider-Man: Freshman Year. When it was initially announced, it was hinted at Spidey’s early days to becoming Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universee. Yet, the first look has revealed it may not be that way after all.

Not only do we see Norman Osborne become a mentor for Peter Parker, but it also hints at Doctor Strange having a role of some kind. Considering they only really met in the MCU during Avengers: Infinity War, it was taken as potentially a part of the multiverse. Yet, the official press release still includes the line that it “follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-man in the MCU.”

“Spider-Man: Freshman Year” is an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Executive producer Jeff Trammel serves as head writer.

It’s very likely just an old copy from when the show was announced, as we know from Spider-Man: No Way Home that Norman Osborne couldn’t find anyone with his name. Plus, Peter Parker seemingly didn’t know who he was. Either they go out of their way to give a reason why Norman never existed in the MCU until Peter meets Tony, or the “MCU” is just a way to hint at the multiverse connection. For now, we can only speculate.

SDCC: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Captain Career Isn’t The Same From ‘What If…?’

When the animated series What If… ? first dove into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the first character it introduced was Captain Carter. A variant of Peggy Carter from the Captain America franchise, Carter went on to take the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers.

Captain Carter made a surprise appearance in live-action in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where she was a member of the Illuminati. Her character was the first to make the jump for animation to live-action, so her presence in the Doctor Strange sequel raised many questions. Primarily, fans have wondered if the Captain Carter seen in What If… ? was the same variant in Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel Studios confirmed at their animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con that the two Captain Carters are indeed variants of one another. Importantly, that means that the What If… ? Captain Carter did not die at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. It also means that both the animated and live-action future of What If… ?’s Captain Carter, voiced and played by Hayley Atwell, may be bright.

SDCC: Marvel Studios Confirms Season 3 of ‘What If…?’

What If…? was Marvel Studios first animated series and it looks like they plan to get mileage out of the concept. Before an episode of Season 2 of What If…? streamed, the studio confirmed the development of a third season during the Marvel Studios Animation panel at SDCC ’22.

Realistically, the show could continue for any number of seasons as the concept lends itself to pretty much any minor change to 616 continuity that a creative team could imagine. The first season stuck almost exclusively with retelling the stories of Marvel Studios films with just one minor change. Future seasons could trend closer to the concept’s use in the comics where some fairly wild stories were told.
