First Footage Description of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ from CinemaCon

It looks like Marvel is the first to present at Disney’s CinemaCon panel, and before Kevin Feige took to stage, they showcased some footage for their upcoming projects. It looks like that also included a brief snippet for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While it doesn’t reveal much, it seemingly included Nakia, Shuri and Okoye, who are at the frontlines for a battle, which may

It was surprising that they haven’t shown more at the event, as there wasn’t even any tease for Thor: Love and Thunder. Most of the focus remained on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is a given as it’s going to release soon. Still, the fact they are teasing a “major battle” that potentially could be where they take on an invasion by Atlantis and Namor.

We likely won’t get a trailer until July or August, as there’s still some time before the release and Thor‘s next entry also changed the trailer release window between these projects. We don’t know if they might build up more suspense moving forward, or return to the more traditional release window. Only time will tell, but it looks like they are still working hard on the film so it can hit its November release.

  • ‘Harley Quinn’s Kite-Man Spinoff Officially Ordered to Series

‘Harley Quinn’s Kite-Man Spinoff Officially Ordered to Series

HBO Max is all-in with the upcoming Harley Quinn spinoff focused on the loveable “Hell Yeah” shouter, Kite Man. Titled Noonan’s, the series focuses on his time owning a bar and the many patrons that visit it from the DC Universe. Co-Creator of the original series Dean Lorey will act as the series showrunner. Suzanna Makkos, the executive Vice President of Original Comedy and Adult Animation for HBO Max and Adult Swim, shared their excitement for the spinoff.

We love the wild and fun world of ‘Harley Quinn’ so much we just had to make a spin-off and who better to center it around than the outcast Kite Man. Justin, Patrick, and Dean have created the perfect local hangout for Gotham City’s not-so-finest at Noonan’s, where bar patrons can blow off steam after a long day of mayhem

The project’s name may potentially change, but it’s great to see the fan-favorite character get his own spinoff out of Harley Quinn. The show took a hard R-rating to explore the DC universe in a unique way. It’s become quite the favorite with those that hoped to see their favorite characters cursing up a storm, and it never minced its words on what it’s about.

Kite-Man is a perfect straight man. So, whatever other villain or hero shows up at his bar may perfectly bounce off of his “Hell Yeah” attitude. We also don’t know if it might even tie into the main series, as it’s busy preparing for the release of its third season.

  • Xochitl Gomez Teases the Opening Sequence of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Xochitl Gomez Teases the Opening Sequence of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains one of Marvel Studios’ most secretive films. With the release date for the sequel arriving soon, fans have been able to get a few more glimpses into the highly-anticipated MCU installment. In a recent interview with Marvel, America Chavez actress Xochitl Gomez seemed to tease the beginning of Multiverse of Madness:

[The film opens with Chavez] literally running for her life in the gap junction space between universes with Doctor Strange.

    Xochitl Gomez

While it is a short quote, it is interesting in its implications for the film. First, if the Doctor Strange sequel opens in this way, it seemingly sets the movie off to a quickly-paced start. Not much is known about the plot, but Gomez might have just allowed viewers to make more sense of the footage provided in trailers and other promotions.

It makes sense for America Chavez’s character to be in this situation considering that her power set includes punching openings that create doorways between alternative universes. Her dimension-hopping abilities will certainly have a major and helpful role to play in Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 6, 2022.

  • New Comic-Inspired ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Promo Art Offers New Look at Gorr

New Comic-Inspired ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Promo Art Offers New Look at Gorr

Even with a trailer and poster out for Thor: Love and Thunder, our only real look at Christian Bale‘s Gorr the God Butcher comes through merchandise. We got the release which included some concept art with a very different design from the comics. Yet, a Funko Pop would tease that he may indeed have similar abilities to what he had in the comics, as the All-Black Necrosword can extend like a symbiote. A new round of promo images for Love and Thunder have found their way online that are inspired by classic comic covers, which also include a new look at Gorr.

Mighty Thor gets a good focus alongside Thor, but the final image includes a great look at Gorr wielding his weapon. Yes, he is true quite a bit more humanoid with white robes covering his body, but it once again confirms that the All-Black has the ability to extend with some dark energy. Here’s hoping that means he’ll also get his iconic black hood as the film goes on. Perhaps he’ll become more and more alien over the course of using the blade, which may curse its user.

    Image

As it’s a drawing, they may change quite a bit about the design but it does seem the tendrils of darkness are going to remain a consisting element of his design. The actual blade is a curious design, as it seems like a normal longsword rather than something that screams “alien.” It may have a different origin story in the film rather than in the comics and may actually have some kind of connection to the overarching storyline. Perhaps it even plays a bigger role in the MCU moving forward.

  • Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez is Younger Than In the Comics in ‘Multiverse of Madness’

Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez is Younger Than In the Comics in ‘Multiverse of Madness’

With the secretive Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness swiftly approaching, marketing and press for the MCU film is ramping up. With fan expectations all over the place, still one of the most anticipated elements of the sequel is a known character. Actress Xochitl Gomez will be bringing comics superhero and Young Avenger America Chavez to life in the film. Chavez’s dimension-hopping powers will obviously come in handy in the multiversal adventure, and it looks like she will be teaching the stubborn Doctor Strange plenty of things.

Virtualy no Marvel character makes it to live-action exactly how they were written in the comics and often for good reason. In a recent interview with Marvel, Gomez revealed a difference between her live-action Gomez and the source material that has clear implications for the future of the character. Gomez explained that Chavez is about 14-years-old in Multiverse of Madness, which is years younger than the comics Chavez who fell in with the Young Avengers around 17. The actress explained the implications of the character’s age on her future in the MCU:

You can definitely see the beginning stages of what future America might become…I took stuff that was in the comics, and kind of lightened it up since she’s less experienced. She’s younger than any of her known appearances in the comics, and I think you can see that. It was a fun challenge exploring what a younger and less experienced America might be, but also hinting towards the serious leader she would soon become. I wanted to keep that kid energy and a little bit of that fake-it-till-you-make-it confidence.

    Xochitl Gomez

Considering a potential Young Avengers project might still be years away, making Chavez younger in the Doctor Strange film would make it easier for her to be a more comics-accurate age when she appears in a related project. Because the character is appearing now, allowing an extra few years of development not only suits the long-term development of the character but also potentially the real-life aging of the young actress.

Fans can meet America Chavez when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when movie hits theaters on May 6, 2022.

  • Star Wars Celebration Newsletter Confirms ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Animated Anthology Series

Star Wars Celebration Newsletter Confirms ‘Tales of the Jedi’ Animated Anthology Series

It looks like the Star Wars celebration newsletter may have accidentally leaked the long-rumored Tales of the Jedi series. It’s been long rumored that they were working on an animated project, especially as the animation studio behind Monsters at Work hinted at a collaboration with Lucasfilm. Then there was a gift to Lucasfilm employees which included the logo for Tales of the Jedi. It was rumored we might get a confirmation at this year’s Star Wars Celebration event, but it seems their newsletter accidentally confirmed it, as shared by @SteeleWars on Twitter.

There has been quite the hunt on what exactly this series is going to end up being, as there’s also one that takes place during the High Republic that’s been strongly rumored and may even start production soon. Still, it seems that we might have a lot more heading our way during the upcoming Star Wars Celebration, as it might offer a few more teases of what the future has in store.

There was a noticeable absence of coverage for the franchise, as while Marvel Studios is promoting two Disney+ series and two films at the same tie, we are barely trying to keep up with Obi-Wan Kenobi and have no idea when we can expect something on Andor or any other project from the franchise. Here’s hopping that may change soon with the event by the end of May.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Might Have Just Closed the Door on a Major Comics Villain

‘Moon Knight’ Might Have Just Closed the Door on a Major Comics Villain

Moon Knight Episode 5 dealt little with the future of the character, and it instead opted to explore the titular character’s past. The journey through the Underworld combined with the search through rooms full of Marc Spector’s memories made for quite an emotional episode. While it did more to develop Marc’s and Steven Grant’s characters more than anything else, the episode also left clues about the way in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe might (or might not) deal with some of Moon Knight’s classic supporting cast and storylines from the comics.

The heaviest and darkest aspect of Episode 5 came from the series’ take on Marc’s childhood trauma. It was revealed that his dissociative identity disorder and Steven’s personality manifested at least in part from the emotional and physical abuse he suffered from his mother, because she blamed Marc for the accidental death of his little brother. The inclusion—and death—of Marc’s brother might have major implications for a major comics villain’s presence in the MCU.

In the comics, Randall Spector was the younger brother of Marc Spector. Randall, like Marc, joined the military but later became a mercenary. Randall had an interesting journey into villain territory, generally beginning when he killed a woman Marc was involved with during a mercenary assignment. Randall had a stint as a serial killer and subsequently became motivated to kill Marc to supposedly take on the Moon Knight mantle for himself. He also spent time as a member of the Cult of Khonshu, and was enhanced with powers by goddess Nephthys.

    No Shadowknight in the MCU?

    ‘Shadowland: Moon Knight’

Randall is most known, however, for his supervillainous role as Shadowknight in the Shadowland: Moon Knight comics arc. Convinced he was the next avatar of Khonshu, Shadowknight carried out numerous murders to get Marc’s attention. The ensuing fights between the two killed even more bystanders, and Moon Knight ultimately decided he had no other option but to kill Randall.

    ‘Shadowland: Moon Knight’

The fact that Marc’s younger brother dies as a child in Moon Knight immediately raises the question: does that mean Shadowknight does not have a future in the MCU? Nothing is ever totally off the table for Marvel Studios, but if they wanted to bring the supervillain to live-action, it seems as though they would need to take a non-comics-accurate approach. With the ensuing multiverse hanging over the MCU, the options will always be limitless. But without dipping into that line of storytelling, the series does not suggest that Randall Spector is around to take on the mantle of Shadowknight.

While Randall Spector is memorable in the comics, he is arguably not one of Moon Knight’s most iconic or classic villains. His storylines were, though, often melodramatic and hyperviolent in nature. So, fans that are hoping for Oscar Isaac’s superhero to move into the violent and brutal space might be a bit disappointed that a comics character in that realm might not be a viable option for Moon Knight’s future. While someone other than Randall could call themselves Shadowknight, that sibling relationship and drama would be lacking.

Whether or not the MCU will adapt a version of Randall Spector and Shadowknight will, in theory, never be truly answered until the MCU comes to an end. Still, the fact that Moon Knight just seemingly eliminated his traditional backstory is evidence that perhaps the franchise might not have long-term plans for the villain.

The first five episodes of Moon Knight are now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

  • ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ Now the Highest Grossing Video Game Adaptation

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ Now the Highest Grossing Video Game Adaptation

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is on its way to passing $300M worldwide, but even before it has passed that landmark, it has already taken the top spot when it comes to live-action adaptations of video game franchises. To be fair, it only had to beat its own previous franchise installment, which had that spot at $146.1M. Uncharted was close on its tail, which currently stands at $145.9M. So, even with more competition on the horizon, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is still holding on strong with its second entry.

Paramount is all-in with their new franchise, as they announced the third entry even before it was released as well as a Knuckles-focused spinoff for Paramount+. It is currently doing quite well in the United Kingdom and still hasn’t been released yet in the Middle East or Japan, the former being a big contender to push its box office numbers further. While it’s hard to say if it’ll pass the $400M mark, there’s still some potential.

We also have to take into account that the film has only recently been released, which means it’ll continue to set a higher benchmark for future entries. It’s strange to think that Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, which also had an impressive $144M back in 2019, never received a sequel of any kind. Still, that franchise is moving to Netflix with no news of another film in any form of development currently.

  • ‘Moon Knight’: Why the ‘Black Panther’ Reference is Such a Big Deal

‘Moon Knight’: Why the ‘Black Panther’ Reference is Such a Big Deal

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight hasn’t shied away from introducing audiences to Egyptian mythology. It has in fact made it as central as possible to the overall storyline. But even though the future of the titular character in the MCU isn’t all that clear due to contractual issues, there are several details and other broader concepts that can, and in all likelihood will be used as stepping stones ahead of their return in future feature films of TV shows. Episode 5 was yet another great example of this.

    Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight (2022)

Following the episode 4 cliffhanger where Steven and Marc are greeted by Taweret, she is quick to try and calm them down by elucidating where they found themselves. She then clarifies that they are in the Realm of the Duat, the realm of the dead in ancient Egyptian mythology. And that due to the Duat’s true nature being impossible for the human mind to comprehend, they may be perceiving the realm as something more easily recognizable. Hence, the psych ward. But the most interesting thing shared by the goddess of Women and Children, of childbirth and fertility, is that this realm is only one of several of its kind:

“An afterlife, not the afterlife. You’d be surprised how many intersectional planes of untethered consciousness exist. Ah! Like the ancestral plane! Oh! Just gorgeous.

    Tawaret
    Marvel Studios’ Black Panther (2018)

Getting this Black Panther reference right after introducing the Duat, while extremely cool, it’s also very helpful in driving home the idea that these planes, even though they might have common characteristics and a shared purpose, are very much their own thing. This means that the MCU isn’t combining concepts from different mythologies into a single unified vision, allowing for the future introduction of different pantheons from different cultures spread around the world and their unique takes on the Underworld. God plurality seems to be the way forward for the MCU, something we have already delved into in the past, and that continues to pay dividends each time a Marvel Studios project delves into the subject.

Following the depiction of Olympus in Thor: Love and Thunder’s first teaser trailer, and seing that Gorr the God Butcher is that movie’s main antagonist, it wouldn’t now be too big a reach to think that the Greek ferryman Charon and god Hermes might show up as gods themselves could end up having to cross the river that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead in Greek mythology. And when it comes to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which might end up introducing Aztec gods to the MCU due to an association with Namor, Xolotl, the god of fire and lightning could be next on the list as he was a soul-guide for the dead in Aztec mythology, commonly depicted as a dog-headed man.

Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

So either Gorr the God Butcher ends up being extremely successful in his endeavor to kill all gods or the MCU is definitively moving into a new age where every polytheistic religion will bring us their set of deities that will only help to enrich what is already a packed Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • More ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Teases Her Iconic Line from the Comics

More ‘Ms. Marvel’ Promo Art Teases Her Iconic Line from the Comics

It looks like more Ms. Marvel promo art is finding its way online. The last time we shared it, we noticed it offered the best look yet at Red Dagger. Most of it just highlighted Iman Vellani in her Ms. Marvel costume, which ironically is our best close-up of her design. Yet, @MsMarvelUK has shared a few more with one standing out for including an iconic line that she’s said in the comics and even in Marvel’s Avengers game. The line became famous as the original comic storyline saw her say this as she made her own costume.

Because sometimes you need superhero quotes to push through a year and make it to the next, and because sometimes...bees. | Comics, Superhero quotes, Marvel

There are two visuals highlighting the line which also keeps the fun design aesthetic they are seemingly going for with Ms. Marvel. The latest trailer drop also included this design aesthetic which made for a unique design to stick out from the rest, while highlighting her teenage fan mentality.

It does seem unlikely that she’ll say the line early on, but it seems clearer that they could use this as the emotional climax before she faces whatever threat that’ll make her life a living hell in the series. We surprisingly still know very little about who the enemies will end up being for her adventure, especially with the Inhuman elements seemingly removed. Yet, they may use this chance to slowly build up that part of the universe, especially with the upcoming appearance of Mutants as well. So, they might reinvent their mythology to avoid too many comparisons between the two. For now, it’s just speculation but we’ll know more once June rolls around.
