  • ‘What If’ Season 2 Officially Confirmed for 2022 Release

‘What If’ Season 2 Officially Confirmed for 2022 Release

Marvel Studios’ 2022 Disney+ slate is looking like it might be as packed as 2021’s. We already know that this year will include Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk. The streaming service previously released a sizzle real to tease the 2022 Disney+ projects, but it notably did not include a tease of the second season of What If…? which had been expected.

It now looks like the animated anthology series is confirmed to debut in 2022 after all. Disney released a production brief ahead of Moon Knight. While noting all of Marvel’s 2021 Disney+ projects, the release goes on to confirm that What If…? is indeed part of the 2022 plan:

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. Feige is building on that success with a host of new series that streamed on Disney+ in 2021, including “WandaVision,” “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “What If…?” and “Hawkeye.” Upcoming original series for 2022 include “Moon Knight,” Ms. Marvel,” “She-Hulk” and the second season of “What If…?.

This makes sense given that What If… ? had been previously described as an annual release. While the series has yet to truly interact with the main MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is rumored to incorporate some elements of the animated multiversal series. If it does begin to crossover, the hype will definitely build for future seasons of one of the MCU’s most unique entries to date. It will interesting to see if What If…? Season 2 keeps Season 1’s late summertime slot, considering that Ms. Marvel seems to be looking at a June premiere and She-Hulk is reported to be released after it.

  • ‘The Batman’ Hits $400 Million Worldwide

‘The Batman’ Hits $400 Million Worldwide

The Batman is looking to retain the top spot at the box office this weekend.

Along with officially crossing the $400 million mark worldwide, the Matt Reeves film is set to add another $66 million this weekend stateside. This will bring its domestic haul to $238.5 million by Sunday. The film took in $18.7 million on Friday, which is a healthy 47% decline from last week. That’s a better hold than the second weekends of other DC films such as Batman v. Superman, The Dark Knight Rises, Justice League and The Dark Knight.

With little to no competition this weekend, it is entirely possible the $66 million estimate could increase once the final numbers hit on Monday. Going into next weekend, the film’s only true competition is Paramount’s The Lost City starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Even still, it is likely The Batman will continue to dominate the box office until Sony’s Morbius (finally) hits theaters on April 1st.

The Batman is in theaters now.

  • Leaked ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Set Photos Tease Sith-Themed Mandalorians

Leaked ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Set Photos Tease Sith-Themed Mandalorians

The continuation of Din Djarin’s story has been highly anticipated after The Book of Boba Fett gave us the reunion of Baby Yoda and Djarin. While it felt a bit sudden shortly after they separated, it did open up a lot of possibilities on what The Mandalorian Season 3 might explore. It’s almost impossible to predict what direction they might take, but a slew of set photos have leaked online that may offer a glimpse into what they’re planning.

What stands out in the images are the bright red Mandalorian-like helmets. They seem to share the same color as the Sith Troopers that we see in the sequel trilogy, but with the overall design used for Mandalorian helmets. The split in the middle is the only oddity in its design. The third image does hint at another empire base being visited. Perhaps a group of rogue Mandalorians has aligned themselves with them. The material also seems to be closer to Trooper armor rather than the usual Beskar. Plus, don’t have any horns, which excludes a connection to Darth Maul’s time as the ruler of Mandalore. It’ll be interesting to see how these factor into the series whenever it premieres.

The Empire is probably still after poor Grogu, who still has an affinity for using the Force. Perhaps his action son Tatooine might have put him back on their radar, as he and his father are on the run. The Mandalorian also set up an eventual battle for Mandalore, as Djarin would become the person to wield the Darksaber. So, we’ll see if these helmets are from those hunting him down.

  • Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez Will Teach Doctor Strange about the Multiverse

Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez Will Teach Doctor Strange about the Multiverse

We’ve all wondered just what may unleash Doctor Strange into the multiverse. The end of Spider-Man: No Way Home seemingly hinted that his own actions might be the trigger that opens up the world to a threat far beyond its comprehension. Yet, Strange did mention that very little is known about the multiverse. Which would mean he’d require a guide in his time throughout it. As it turns out, Xochitl Gomez‘s America Chavez will take on exactly that role for the character, as revealed by its director Sam Raimi in an interview with Empire.

Strange is still learning about the Multiverse. And here’s a character that can actually travel through it. He’s such a know-it-all all the time, and to have to learn from a kid probably smarts.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects the character’s ego and what it might mean for his development throughout the story. The latest trailer hinted at him being accused for something, which may also be the act of one of his Variants but the almost Sorcerer Supreme might get humbled throughout the story. Benedict Cumberbatch does highlight that this story is “a lot of self-discovery” for the character.

There’s a lot of reckoning. And a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become

    Benedict Cumberbatch

It’s a fitting direction for the character, who has mostly been a side character up to this point. Taking him out of an environment he is familiar with and adding a new character with more experience would definitely push him to let go. We saw a compassionate Strange when he helped Peter make the hardest decision in his life, but who knows how forgetting him may have affected him as well. Perhaps he no longer wants to let anyone near him out of fear of losing again, even if subconsciously. Whatever it may be, we’ll find out in May and cannot wait to see how they explore the multiverse.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch Promises ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is “On the Level of” ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Benedict Cumberbatch Promises ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is “On the Level of” ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

We’re already in March and while Moon Knight is just around the corner, all eyes are still on the next multiversal chapter with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Quite a few MCU projects have been teasing the storyline, but Benedict Cumberbatch will finally take a step into the multiverse after keeping it from collapsing after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. While there are quite a few rumors making the rounds, we know very little about the film’s story and Cumberbatch promises that “it’s a big, big movie.” He even goes on to compare it to No Way Home.

It’s going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand

    Benedict Cumberbacht
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness – exclusive

After the first trailer gave us a glimpse of a popular character from the 20th Century Fox franchise making a return, the comparison is well-deserved. Most of the latest Spidey film’s marketing was focused on the returning faces while keeping quite a few elements hidden. Marvel Studios took that to a new level with the hint at Ultron bots, which would imply the return of a Variant of Tony Stark, someone fighting Wanda with Captain Marvel-like abilities, and a very familiar voice.

There’s a lot riding on the project, and who knows how it may further expand the multiverse afterward, especially with hints that the events of Loki were building up to an adaptation of Secret Wars. Strange might be at the center of everything moving forward, and this journey into the insanity that is the multiverse might be the only thing that’ll ensure that it doesn’t fully break down and unleash even worse nightmares.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Enters Its Endgame

REVIEW: ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Enters Its Endgame

It’s been known for a couple weeks now that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will soon be dropping its curtain for the final time. The Emmy Award winning showbiz dramedy now has only a season left to air, and the latest batch of episodes seem to confirm this with more gusto than any network announcement ever could. I mentioned in my first review of the show’s fourth season, which has now completed its run on Amazon Prime, that there were tones of coda in the air. For all the grandiose of the premiere’s “we’re back” energy, there was also a sense of knowing the end was near. The season’s two-part finale, written and performed on par with the best of the series’ episodes, dives headfirst into this whispered promise, transforming it into a call towards the cheap seats. Every storyline is now angled in a single direction, aimed at something fans of the beloved show might have hoped never to see. As of this week, Maisel has entered its endgame.

Granted, Amy Sherman-Palladino‘s critical darling isn’t going away just yet. There’s still quite a bit of work to be done before Midge Maisel signs off, it’s just that now it’s more obvious than ever where things are headed. Ironically, the thematic thread needled through each of the final two episodes is not how narratives end, but what might come after they conclude. Alex Borstein‘s Susie Myerson, now operating out of her own office, is less dependent on Midge than ever, as the series continues to insist on asking whether she really needs her star client at all. Of course, Susie is still loyal to Midge, the closest thing she has to a real friend, but the comic’s staunch refusal to accept any gig worth playing has forced Myerson to begin looking elsewhere for a payday. And boy oh boy, does she need a payday. Just as Susie starts finding success with a new magic act and another prospective client, the show reminds the audience that the manager still has a few dues to deal with. After a season of surprising growth, viewers should be curious to see if Susie’s newfound independence sends her soaring or if her past mistakes catch up in a nasty way.

Speaking of surprising growth, Michael Zegen‘s Joel Maisel, whom I’ve scarcely written about, is also finally growing into a life outside of his former indiscretions. Since the show’s first season, which began with Joel cheating on Midge and leaving her in the middle of the night, the character has somehow found a way to shift from irredeemable to genuinely likable. This is due in large part to the way he’s owned up to his flaws, and embraced the penance for his failures. In accepting his strengths, as opposed to combating his weaknesses, he’s come into his own as a protagonist and found a life more suitable to his desires. With a successful business, a new romantic interest, and a baby on the way, Joel is set up to find his happily ever after. Unfortunately, like Susie before him, it might not be as easy as he hopes it will be. Stephanie Hsu‘s Mei Lin seems less than positive about the prospect of marriage, and her supposedly very dangerous family likely won’t be pleased with her pregnancy either.

Despite this lack of clarity, it’s a moment of tenderness between Mei and Joel that sends the show’s title character reeling into her final stretch. The cold open of this week’s second installment reveals that the ending of the first may have been more serious than it looked. Kevin Pollak‘s Moishe Maisel is rushed to the hospital, and his prognosis is questionable. It’s an excellent bit of staging and camera work that breaks from the traditional Maisel mold, and it installs an ominous feeling of uncertainty in the viewer from the jump. For Midge, it’s an uneasy situation. Moishe is family, and she cares deeply about him, but he’s also representative of her past life with Joel. Both literally and figuratively, the life she’s spent so long forging for herself is attempting to tear her away from the hospital at every turn. It’s a misplaced sense of duty that keeps her there, which she realizes when she instinctively goes to comfort Joel and finds Mei already has him in her arms. Seeing this, she rushes to do at least one set at the club, and ends up stumbling into what could be the rest of her life.

After improvising a routine in which she vents about her life, Midge discovers that the enigmatic Lenny Bruce, once again played to perfection by Luke Kirby, has been watching the whole time. The relationship between Midge and Lenny has always been, shall we say, sexual in nature. Erotic in a physical sense, but also in a metaphorical one. Lenny is symbolic of the life Midge wants to live, but never feels ready to commit to. He’s tantalizing, and so is the comedy lifestyle. With her parents and Joel, there’s always been something holding her back, but with Mei in the picture and a minor falling out with her mother, Midge finally feels free to go for it. Ultimately, she does, finally doing the do with Lenny (!) and finding herself walking on the stage at Carnegie Hall. The season’s final shot, of Midge staring at the hundreds of empty seats in front of her, only comes after Lenny berates her for refusing to play by the rules of a game she’d like to win. “If you screw this up, it’ll break my [expletive] heart”, he says. It’s certain much of the Maisel fanbase feels the same, and with everything on the line, the next and last season can’t come soon enough.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to Release Digitally a Week Early

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to Release Digitally a Week Early

Here’s a nice surprise, but it looks like Spider-Man: No Way Home is getting released digitally a week early. So, the wait won’t be as long with the film now releasing on March 15th. The news was just shared by Fandango’s Erik Davis and comes hot off the heels of a digital HD version of the film leaking online. It seems that the early release was also accidentally leaked earlier by the Apple store as noticed by The Direct.

Of course, one can’t complain that we’re getting access to one of the biggest films since the pandemic started from the comfort of our home. It’ll be interesting to see how well it sells, as the nostalgia-filled romp through Spidey’s cinematic history will definitely be on everyone’s must-have list. The physical release sadly didn’t get an earlier release, but that could change as time goes on.

No Way Home somehow managed to balance a heartfelt and empowering story with many moments of nostalgic bliss. The return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield probably managed to push the film even more, as many wanted to confirm if the countless leaks were true or not. We’ll see what the special features may reveal that almost made its way into the film.

  • BREAKING: Original ‘Deadpool’ Writers Return to Work on ‘Deadpool 3’s Script

BREAKING: Original ‘Deadpool’ Writers Return to Work on ‘Deadpool 3’s Script

Mere minutes after the news broke that Shawn Levy is in negotiations to direct the upcoming third entry of Deadpool, it seems there’s a bit more to the story. While the report still confirms that Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux are still involved in writing the script, it seems that some veterans of the franchise are back. the Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch has shared an additional detail that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first two installments, are also back to work on the third entry.

The original article has also been updated which reveals that these writers are also adding their own input to the script. It’s unsure why they are suddenly involved, but it’s not uncommon for Marvel Studios to have multiple writers tackle a script throughout its development process. Perhaps due to their history with the originals, they might just add some elements to keep the character consistent throughout the projects as its leading star Ryan Reynolds has also actively been involved with the script.

So, we shouldn’t take this as them being unhappy with the initial version but rather part of their process as they get external thoughts in, especially with it involving the writers of the original. It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle the project and if we’ll hear about how much the Molyneux sisters are still involved. It’s motivating to see that the project is moving forward and further adds to a feeling for when we might expect it’s release.

  • BREAKING: ‘The Adam Project’s Shawn Levy to Direct ‘Deadpool 3’

BREAKING: ‘The Adam Project’s Shawn Levy to Direct ‘Deadpool 3’

It’s been long theorized given just how closely Ryan Reynolds has worked with director Shawn Levy on projects like Free Guy and Netflix’s The Adam Project, but we finally got the confirmation. Levy is in negotiations to tackle the third entry in the Deadpool franchise, which will see Wade Wilson join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reynolds has been working on the script alongside Bob’s Burger‘s Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.

In a way, Reynolds and Levy have not been subtle about hints that these negotiations were potentially already happening. He takes over from Tim Miller, who directed the first entry in 2016, and David Leitch who took over the sequel. Sadly, there is still no release date included and no word when we might expect it to enter production for now.

It has been confirmed that the film will be R-rated and it’ll be interesting to see how Levy tackles a project like that given his background with more PG-13 fair. With Disney+ adding mature content like Daredevil, Iron Fist, and more, there’s a good chance that the future MCU entry from Deadpool may also eventually find its way to the service. We’ll see if its potential success may also draw the interest of Disney to further explore other R-rated content. For now, let’s just hope that having a director attach may kickstart production sooner rather than later.

  • REVIEW: ‘Gibbon: Beyond the Trees’ is a Short Yet Important Experience

REVIEW: ‘Gibbon: Beyond the Trees’ is a Short Yet Important Experience

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is quite a simple game at first glance. Most of the time, you’ll spend swinging from tree to tree, building up momentum so that you can cross some dangerous gaps and enjoy the visuals. There’s no dialogue or text to tell a grand story, but that is not necessary for what the game truly is about. It’s an interactive reminder of what humanity has done to nature and how it affects animals as a result. A soothing and relaxing experience transforms into a dark reminder of the dangers these animals face; all packaged in a memorable but brief experience.

As a mobile game, there’s not much you can say about its gameplay. You press the screen to hold on to a branch or object, where your gibbon automatically climbs up. If you hold it with both fingers while ready to land, you’ll end up in a sliding motion. Later on, you get an additional move by flicking to the right that adds some extra momentum while swinging from one branch to the other. The only real consequence you face is a slowdown if you don’t keep a consistent flow from branch to branch. At worst, there are some bigger gaps that challenge you to stick to the higher point of a tree.

The big focus point of this game is in the actual experience and seeing the environments change. What starts off with a beautiful forest, swiftly turns into a dark look at deforestation and the rise of humanity taking over the land. There are segments where it purposely takes away anything to swing off to force you to slowly make your way to a new point to start your climb once again. Especially in one section, there’s a sudden spark in danger that also has a thematic reason to exist. I just don’t want to give away what it is, because it caught me off-guard and reminded me what the game is truly about.

It’s a very short experience that you can probably get through in one sitting. Yet, it’s quite a memorable one with the sound effects of the gibbon’s soft cries. There’s a soothing soundscape that adds to the experience throughout, may it be a waterfall in the background or even a lively populated area. Everything you witness is there to relax and take it in, especially as the earlier parts try to comfort you into this experience. It even purposefully has that section I mentioned previously to pull you out of it at a time you least expect it to highlight the connection of your experience with the gibbons.

If you end up falling down a pit, the worst thing that’ll happen is that you respawn at an earlier point to build up the momentum you need to jump over that gap. I do believe it’s more of an interactive experience that has a very important cause behind it and it’s very admiring what Broken Rules have accomplished here. The game is currently available through Apple Arcade but is eyeing a release on Steam and Nintendo Switch. I highly recommend giving it a shot, it’s a short yet important experience that’ll surely pull at your heartstrings.
