  • West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Ariana DeBose stunned critics and audiences with her role as Anita in Stephen Spielberg’s West Side Story, winning the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress and earning an Oscar nomination for the same role. Now, DeBose will step into the world of comic book adaptations as she boards Sony’s Kraven the Hunter.

According to a trade report, DeBose will play voodoo priestess Calypso, a role for which Jodi Turner-Smith had previously been rumored. Calypso and Kraven shared a highly antagonistic relationship in the comics that often saw the hunter driven into fits of rage by the manipulations of Calypso, who also created potions for Kraven to augment his strength.

DeBose joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who landed the lead as Kraven late last year, Fred Hechinger, who recently joined the film as Kraven’s brother, the Chameleon, and Russell Crowe, who will play the father of the two men. Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor, is due in theaters next January.

  • HBO Max’s ‘Titans’ Season 4 Started Production

HBO Max’s ‘Titans’ Season 4 Started Production

In a way, it was only a question of time but it looks like production has finally started on the next season of HBO Max’s Titans. The official Twitter account shared a picture from the TV series’ clipboards that also confirm that production originally started yesterday on February 28th. Nicholas Copus, who worked on projects like Animal Kingdom, The Right Stuff, American Gods, and more, will take on the role of director for the first episode of that season.

We still know very little about the upcoming season outside of a few rumors, such as iconic Superman villain Lex Luthor potentially appearing. They also are eyeing Joseph Morgan and Franka Potente in the villainous role of the latest season. If these casting rumors end up true, they would take on the roles of Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem. There have been some hints sprinkled throughout the last season that would help support this direction for the fourth season as the Titans leave Gotham behind them and everything that happened with Scarecrow.

It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle the fourth season, as it seems mostly freed from the weight that bogged it down before. The series is quite popular on the platform, and it made sense that they would renew it for a fourth season. There are even hints that they’ve already signed on the talent for the fifth season that may start production once this season wraps. Here’s hoping we might get some teases of Brother Blood and confirmation on the rumored castings soon.

  • John Cho Looks Back at ‘Cowboy Bebop’s Cancelation

John Cho Looks Back at ‘Cowboy Bebop’s Cancelation

While the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop was met with a mixed reception, the cast was definitely dedicated to the series. Many expected that it’ll get a second season, but Netflix suddenly pulled the plug shortly after the series finally premiered on the streamer. It was never made clear why the series wasn’t continued, but given its troubled production, it must’ve hit hard for everyone involved. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, former Spike Spiegel actor John Cho finally opened up on the cancellation.

I put a lot of my life into it. I’d gotten injured shooting that show and so I took a year off because of the surgery and devoted myself to rehab, came back and finished the show. It was this huge mountain for me to climb healing from that injury. I felt good about myself as a result. We also shot the show in New Zealand, so my family moved there. It was just a huge event in my life and it was suddenly over. It was very shocking and I was bummed.

    John Cho

It must be tough to fully commit to a role and face an injury that takes you out for an entire year, only for all that hard work to be thanked with a quick cancellation. He did share his thoughts on teh upside of tackling this role:

But I was very warmed by the response. I wish I could have contacted everybody and gotten hugs. You can’t do that now, but … I don’t know what this is. I’m mystified a little bit about how you can connect with people that you don’t know doing your work, but I won’t question it. I will value it and treasure it. I’m just really deeply appreciative that anyone would care. It’s stunning to me.

    John Cho

There was certainly a lot of love between the cast members, as some of them took to Social Media to share their thoughts on Netflix’s sudden decision. Cho has still been busy since, as he’s currently promoting his middle-grade debut Troublemaker. So, while the series has sadly come to an end, it’ll always be exciting to see what the cast has in store next.

‘Euphoria’ Star Javon Walton Joins ‘Umbrella Academy’ Season 3

We have yet to get an official release date for the third season of Umbrella Academy, but things seem to be ramping up over a Netflix. So, we could be close. Over the past few weeks, Netflix has released a series of character posters featuring the Umbrella Academy and the mysterious Sparrow Academy. There’s still no date in sight, but it seems another star has joined the project in a mysterious role.

Netflix took to Twitter today to confirm that Euphoria star Javon Walton has indeed joined season 3 of Umbrella Academy, although it is unknown just who he will be playing. He is best known for his role as Ashtray in the first two seasons of Euphoria. He played a drug dealer and was the adoptive brother of Fez. Walton first teased his casting during an interview with Complex in which he listed his upcoming projects only for Netflix to confirm it now.

Just a last month Netflix revealed that Justin Cornwell, Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Genesis Rodriguez, and Cazzie David had all joined the cast as members of the Sparrow Academy. It’s possible that Walton could be playing the seventh member of the Academy, maybe even lending his voice to the mysterious cube. The cliffhanger ending of season two left fans on the edge of their seats with the reveal of a newly altered timeline due to their meddling. This season is sure to be highly anticipated and will definitely turn the series on its head.

  • What ‘Daredevil’ and Co.’s Disney+ Addition Might Mean for Marvel Studios’ Future

What ‘Daredevil’ and Co.’s Disney+ Addition Might Mean for Marvel Studios’ Future

It’s been long-rumored now since the Marvel Netflix series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and more are making their way to Disney+. After many back-and-forths online, the confirmation has finally arrived, as they dropped a sudden teaser that they are joining the series on March 16th. The big takeaway is that the streaming service is embracing more mature content without restricting it to other services, especially as they went out of their way to offer bundles with Hulu. Yet, this addition might have bigger implications for Marvel Studios’ future ventures.

The timing for these additions is perfect with a darker-toned Moon Knight just on the horizon. Not just that, but it also means that older R-rated projects like Blade, Deadpool, Logan, or more can get added soon. Not just that, we know that Deadpool 3 is going to be an R-rated project and now we don’t have to worry about it potentially landing on Hulu. It’ll be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it would’ve been a shame if it wasn’t going to be part of the showcase in Disney+.

The streamer was showcased as an “archive” for classic projects from Marvel, Pixar, and any other Disney brand. So, its family-friendly focus is not only restrictive from an archival standpoint but also creatively. They lost a lot of projects early on due to this restriction, such as the Lizzie McGuire revival and pushing the Love Simon spinoff, Love Victor, to Hulu. While it seems unlikely we’ll get an R-rated Pixar film any time soon, Marvel and Star Wars are very different stories. This move might be an implication that Disney+ Original projects will no longer fully adhere to the streaming’s initial set-up.

Marvel may be able to fully embrace the darker and more mature tones that upcoming projects may have. Moon Knight is a big implication of Disney+ maturing, which we’ve talked bout here, but it also means R-rated projects are a possibility. The long-rumored Werewolf by Night project can embrace the darker aspects of having a werewolf-centric story. Their Blade remake might also start moving towards an R-rating, as there are no longer concerns about streaming availability being restricted to specific services.

There’s also the continuation to keep in mind, as we know Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returned in the roles they made famous. Rumors are hinting at a new Daredevil revival, which now can embrace the darker story arcs introduced through the Netflix incarnations. There are more mature storylines possible now that the glass ceiling has been broken. It may be a small step for now, but once Deadpool or Logan get added with the parent control sometime in the future, we might be able to see the first steps for a new MCU.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Funkos Leak Early With Some New Faces

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Funkos Leak Early With Some New Faces

It looks like the Funko Pops for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have leaked early featuring most of the cast that we’ve already seen in the trailers and teased throughout. We’ve been expecting an official announcement today, but it seems like they accidentally leaked early. popnewws_ shared the various photos that were posted on the site The Mighty Shop.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Caka9C1JIo_/?utm_medium=copy_link

Yet, others have also found their way online featuring some new characters like Supreme Strange, who doesn’t have a resemblance to the Defender version of the evil version we saw. What sticks out is that this is the first version of Strange that doesn’t have his signature goatee. Perhaps he’s an earlier version of one of the Strange that would get affected by some changes. Or, he’s the version that joins the Illuminati that was teased in the latest trailer. There’s also a new character named Sara included, who might be Sara Wolfe.

There are definitely some more Funko Pops that won’t release after the film had a few weeks in theaters. Even now, we’re only just getting a Funko Pop for Matt Murdock, which will even include the brick he caught during his cameo in the film. The fact that the Supreme version is included has us scratching our head though given that the character was never even teased, the same going for Sara. Perhaps an upcoming teaser trailer will include them or they are purposefully here to make you question who and what role they might have. For now, it’s all we can really do.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Head Writer On Marc Spector’s Avenging Future

‘Moon Knight’ Head Writer On Marc Spector’s Avenging Future

Moon Knight, Marvel Studios’ next installment, is headed to Disney+ in just under a month. With the series’ March 30th release date on the horizon, Marvel is ramping up its promotion for the lesser-known superhero. While Moon Knight is a name even Marvel fans may be unfamiliar with, it looks like caped vigilante could be set to stick around the MCU in a significant way.

Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater told Total Film that he does not know Marvel Studios’ long-term plan for the character. When asked if Moon Knight was gearing up to enter the wider MCU, Slater stated:

The honest answer is I don’t know…Because Kevin [Feige] is the guy who decides all that stuff. Look, if it was up to me, he would be part of the Avengers. It’s absolutely not up to me, but I think that is the goal!

    Jeremy Slater

While it is no surprise that Moon Knight’s MCU future is a secret, it is telling that Slater believes that goal is for the character to break out of his solo outing into a larger team-up or crossover role in the future. Of course, Marvel Studios characters tend to end up as members of the Avengers or other teams. But Phase 4 is introducing new characters at a speed and quantity that is unprecedented even for Marvel Studios, so it is easy to wonder if some characters will be handled differently than fans have been used to.

Before any potential Avengers team-up, Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight will star in his solo series, which promises to be a unique entry in the MCU. The first episode of the series will hit Disney+ on March 30.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Boys’ Wishes It Was As Ambitious As ‘The Boys: Diabolical’

REVIEW: ‘The Boys’ Wishes It Was As Ambitious As ‘The Boys: Diabolical’

Whether it’s telling underdog stories of the disenfranchised sticking it to the Man or making audiences feel disgusted by the real-world implications of superheroes, The Boys always delivers. Garth Ennis’ and Darick Robertson’s deviant and deconstructive superhero comic of the same name has expanded into enormous proportions under Amazon’s watchful eye, spawning a mega-hit TV show, two spin-offs, a web series, and yes, an actual canonical porno. The first of the spin-offs, an animated anthology series titled The Boys: Diabolical, proves to be a fantastic reckoning of the source material and preceding TV show’s blueprint that oftentimes exceeds it.

TV anthologies are in vogue at the moment, which for a universe as deep and loose as The Boys’ makes it an indisputable format to expand the canon. To helm this expansion, creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have enlisted Awkwafina, Andy Samberg, Ilana Glazer, Garth Ennis himself, and a few other writers to craft their own dastardly vignettes laid by the groundwork of The Boys, with each one exhibiting its own animation style and tonal quality. The resulting 8 short episodes tackle some of the most entertaining concepts about capes put to screen but it’s Diabolical’s thematic byproducts that make it heftier than its live-action counterpart.

In spite of the freedom afforded by the anthological format, Diabolical is bound by a single McGuffin: Compound V, the mysterious serum created by Vought International that turns people into superhumans. Compound V is used as a narrative device to frame most of these vignettes, centering it as a crux of ordinary life in The Boys universe.  In a span of 8 12-minute long shorts, Diabolical makes use of Compound V as a storytelling device more effectively than the entirety of The Boys’ two seasons as it epitomizes Vought’s corruption and malevolence that creeps into the lives of characters far removed from the larger-than-life antics of The Seven.

Rogen and Goldberg, known for their brand of edgy humor, open the season with a Looney Tunes-inspired riff on the beloved character that sold the first season to a lot of people, Laser Baby. The short puts aside the finer nuances of latter episodes in favor of mimicking the live-action show’s gore-y touchstones while laying the season’s foundation of unencumbered creativity. It’s right after this episode that Diabolical’s true qualities are displayed with Justin Roiland’s self-explanatory An Animated Short Where Pissed-Off Supes Kill Their Parents. The episode, done fully in the style of Roiland’s opus Rick and Morty, is a meta gut-busting commentary on the increasing absurdity of superhero powers that features Christian Slater voicing a character whose power is narrating things in real-time.

Diabolical cascades into further madness with two episodes from Ilana Glazer and Awkwafina that are explorations on loneliness. Glazer examines addiction and social media through the flask of Compound V in Boyd in 3D, a charming rom-com about a hapless man in love with his hopeless romantic neighbor. But it isn’t until Awkwafina’s BFFs that Diabolical reaches its stylistic apex. An anime brimming with children’s book flourishes, BFFs is tonally the most wholesome vignette of the bunch, as it tackles loneliness and friendship in a very encouraging light, while still observing the material’s dark humor.

Aisha Tyler’s succeeding Nubian vs. Nubian sees a superhero couple on the brink of divorce while their daughter saves their marriage with the help of the family nemesis. This family-friendly premise, however, is subverted by Tyler’s satirical and vulgar writing. For all its wholesome leanings, the episode bears a closer resemblance to the cult classic The Boondocks than with The Parent Trap. The big curveball of the season is John and Sun-hee. Written by Andy Samberg of all people, the vignette centers on an elderly Korean couple on the run from Vought. Samberg, against all odds, writes a deeply profound episode about hardship, love, and existentialism that taps into a spectrum of pathos that this universe has not touched upon previously.

The show’s weakest episodes are ironically the ones that feel like deleted scenes from the live-action series. Garth Ennis, whom everything about this franchise is indebted to as its creator, gets a stab at adding a more personal touch to Rogen and Goldberg’s adaptation. True to the comic’s form, Hughie and Butcher actually look like their comic versions. Diabolical takes the authenticity a step further by having Simon Pegg, whose likeness and persona inspired the creation of Hughie, voice Hughie. But while Ennis’ episode gives audiences a glimpse of a wistful 1:1 recreation of the comic, it comes across as a mere tongue-in-cheek wink at diehards with nothing else to say about the material.

An underwhelming origin story for Homelander closes out Diabolical’s stellar season. It’s the episode that’s most tethered to the live-action show and, in some respects, functions as a pilot for a hypothetical animated extension of the series. Titled One Plus One Equals Two and written by Invincible scribe Simon Racioppa, its sole redeeming factor is the brief glimpse it gives to the troubled and tortured roots of the show’s best character. But within Diabolical’s framework, Racioppa’s episode pales in comparison to the ambition of the season.

Diabolical also follows the trend of celebrities voicing animated TV shows by assembling an ensemble of household names which includes the likes of Michael Cera, Christian Slater, Simon Pegg, and Don Cheadle among a dozen more. The marketing campaign for the show sells the enviable marquee of celebrity voice actors as its strongest asset but the actual episodes prove otherwise. Like Marvel Studios’ What If…?, Diabolical mistakenly assumes that performing in front of the camera and behind it are one and the same. That assumption is easily dispelled by the dismal voice performances of a handful of actors known for their on-screen acclaim. A portion of these performances border into the uncanny valley and sound like inauthentic digital recreations at times.

Even in the face of its star-studded inconveniences, The Boys: Diabolical works. Simply by design, it surpasses the ambition and creativity of its live-action progenitor. It succeeds in remaining a singular piece of work while feeling essential to the deeper understanding of Ennis’ and Robertson’s twisted view of superheroes. If this is what The Boys’ spin-offs are going to be, fans are in luck.

  • CONFIRMED: Marvel’s Netflix Shows and ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Are Joining Disney+ in March

CONFIRMED: Marvel’s Netflix Shows and ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Are Joining Disney+ in March

The moment the various Marvel Netflix shows were leaving the streaming services, the internet was filled to the brim with theories. It seemed like a no-brainer that Disney regained the rights, but most believed it is heading to Hulu given it’s adult-themes. Suddenly, Canada is adding it to Disney+ without the Hulu equivalent Star. Rumors spread that the US will also get access through a new parental control option. After much speculation, Disney Plus has confirmed The Defenders series are joining the streaming service.

In a short teaser posted to social media this morning, Disney+ confirmed Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Defenders, The Punisher and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will debut on the service on March 16th. This aligns with the recent rumors on its addition, as they also reference the new parental controls which will be available on the same day. You can check out the teaser right here:

What a move by Disney, as the fact they are breaking away from the family-friendly content and including these series so close after they left Netflix is quite a telling move. We might also see more crossovers between Hulu and Disney+ content moving forward, especially when it comers to Marvel Studios wanting to expand beyond the PG-13 rating, such as with Deadpool 3. We might see many more new directions for the service in the near future.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Dark Knight’ is the Batman Film We Deserved

REVIEW: ‘The Dark Knight’ is the Batman Film We Deserved

Much like the spoken lines of the film, The Dark Knight is the film we deserve, but without the “not the one we need right now“. It is without a doubt that the Batman franchise has seen better days. What was once one of the front runners in superhero films with Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale‘s take on the character, has mostly gone down in quality since one of the greatest superhero trilogies wrapped up with The Dark Knight Rises. His next two appearances, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League were panned by critics. Not only was The Dark Knight the movie we deserved from the franchise, but also an inspiration for the movie we need right now. One to restore Batman as one of the best superhero properties in media.

The Dark Knight is largely considered one of the best Batman movies of all time. Thinking back to watching the trilogy for the first time, I remember watching The Dark Knight most out of the films. The dynamic between the Joker and Batman is a match made in heaven. Not only does Heath Ledger remain as my favorite iteration of the infamous villain – even if not comically accurate – but his ability to so easily bounce off of Christian Bale‘s Batman is one of those dream pairings in modern media. The two actors act out the relationship between these opposites amazingly. Batman is portrayed as the morally aligned superhero that does not care about fame and only cares about the people of Gotham. Joker, on the other hand, is the perfect portrayal of “some men just want to watch the world burn”.

This dynamic between the hero and villain carries this movie. Not to say the rest of the film is bad, the movie basically perfected the modern superhero genre. However, when you have such a standout part of a movie, it’s hard not to accidentally overlook the rest of the film’s strengths. That being said, not all of the movie has aged well 14 years later. The plot still stands firm, the cinematography is still amazing, yet the combat, however, stood out to me in my recent rewatch. Once again, I do not think this is a fault of the movie, the combat was definitely ahead of its time and nothing in the film is going to be considered qualified for eternity. It was a tad jarring going back to one of the most beautifully shot superhero films and going back to stiff action scenes compared to the fanfare we see in today’s films in the genre.

Superhero films today are flashy, from acrobatic magical martial artists to colorful guns with a mix of explosion and beauty. Modern technology has progressed the abilities for moviemakers to put us into the colorful and flashy pages of a comic book. While this does make the combat of the film feel stiff nowadays, I can’t help but feel this departure from the common superhero tropes of the modern-day really makes The Dark Knight stand firm as one of the most unique superhero films. And in a good way, opposed to the unique but odd Batman Forever.

The Dark Knight is gritty, dark, and violent. The Joker in this form just couldn’t be done without this atmosphere. The man with no morals is sinister, manipulative, and even worse, fearless. This excellent villain to the already serious Batman really puts the character on his toes, I don’t think I have quite seen a hero so powerless since this film. Not even mind control in Jessica Jones and Avengers: Age of Ultron can quite compare. When powers or physical control are involved, there is a thing to break, a thing to fix.

The thing with Joker is that none of that is involved. This is a man with no powers or high-tech machines, just a desire to take down the heroes of the world and prove humanity’s flaws. This desire and his cunning makes him powerful. His insanity and his unpredictability, that is what give him power. That power makes him real, a man that could exist, one that would terrify even the best of us in the real world. That is what makes the Joker easily one of the best villains in modern media.

I didn’t have a definitive ranking of my favorite Batman films, but upon rewatching many of them leading up to The Batman releasing next month, I think it’s safe to say The Dark Knight easily tops my list. The Nolan trilogy of movies is easily the highest quality in my eyes, and this is the movie that makes the trilogy. From a perfect atmosphere to an amazing villain and hero, the film is almost perfect. Now looking back, not only is this easily my favorite DC film, but one of my favorites of all time, and that is coming from a die-hard Marvel fan. The Batman is looking like a snapback to this amazing quality, and I truly hope it leads Batman back to being in the spotlight like when The Dark Knight launched to critical and financial success more than a decade ago.
