Review: ‘Encanto’ Is a Magical Film That Will Put a Song In Your Heart

Leaving the theater after seeing Encanto, I couldn’t help but hum some of the music and check whether there was a soundtrack streaming. The songwriting flair of Lin-Manuel Miranda was on full display, and if you’re a fan of the Hamilton and In the Heights soundtracks, that’s reason enough to watch. But more than just a showcase for incredible songwriting and musical performances, Encanto also offered up a heartwarming, bright, colorful, and — dare I say it — magical story, one that will dazzle the young ones and move the greybeards. It’s a tale of multigenerational legacy, of familial tradition and responsibility, and learning how to be who you are, rather than who you are expected to be. Familiar themes for sure, but the story is told in a fun and exciting way.

Co-written and co-directed by Disney veterans Byron Howard (Tangled, Zootopia), Jared Bush (Moana, Zootopia) and first-time feature director Charise Castro-Smith (Devious Maids, Haunting of Hill House), the story centers on a Colombian family, the Madrigals, who were blessed with magical gifts by the titular enchanted charm: a candle whose light both shines and shadows. The story’s 15-year-old protagonist, Maribel, portrayed with aplomb by Stephanie Beatriz, is as plucky as you’d expect a Disney protagonist to be, but her struggle to live up to her family name among aunts, uncles, and cousins who possess superpowers establishes the emotional stakes early. The stakes are raised even further when her family’s magic is imperiled.

Encanto manages a story that is both fantastical and authentic. It features a voice cast that is almost entirely Latinx, including María Cecilia Botero as Abuela Alma Madrigal, Mirabel’s grandmother; John Leguizamo as Bruno, Mirabel’s uncle; Diane Guerrero as Isabela, Mirabel’s “perfect” eldest sister; Jessica Darrow as Mirabel’s other sister, Luisa, known for her strength and stoicism; Angie Cepeda as Julieta, Mirabel’s mother; and Wilmer Valderrama as Agustín, Mirabel’s father. The filmmakers traveled to Colombian cities and towns in order to really get a sense of the cultural elements they intended to reflect. The story itself grows out of Latin American folklore, and the tradition of magical realism. But while cultural signifiers are present throughout, non-Spanish speakers won’t feel lost or overwhelmed, as the themes, emotional resonance, and interpersonal dynamics are universal.

But ultimately, it’s the musical numbers, and the visuals that accompany them, that make this movie such a delight. Miranda’s trademark witty lyrics and ability to convey exposition and emotion while serving up absolute bops is fully on display. If this is the film that gets him his EGOT, it will be well-warranted. The animation sequences are kinetic and visually striking, and the vocal performances mesh perfectly with the characterization. Luisa’s solo is a standout, but there’s a third-act Spanish only song that’s an absolute showstopper. Even if you barely speak the language, the emotion comes through loud and clear, and this reviewer isn’t ashamed to admit that it brought tears to his eyes.

Heavy emotions aside, there’s still an abundance of whimsy, wonder, and fantastical fun. It’s vibrant, lively, and sweet, and the characters, while rooted in archetypes, are layered and complex enough to each have their own unique appeal. This is a family and setting you’ll enjoy spending time with, and will want to revisit over and over. It merits a big screen theatrical watch, but will likely be a big part of your Disney Plus rotation regardless. ¡Me encantó mucho!

  • Sylvester Stallone Shares First Look at Upgraded ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Costume

Sylvester Stallone Shares First Look at Upgraded ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Costume

Update: Stallone has since deleted the Instagram post.

Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone is becoming something of a frequent collaborator with director James Gunn. The actor recently starred as the voice of King Shark in Gunn’s soft reboot of the Suicide Squad franchise, and now he’s excitedly sharing first looks from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It was revealed not that long ago by Stallone himself that the former Tango & Cash star would be reprising his role as Stakar Ogord for the film, a character he originated in the second film of the Guardians series. Now, the actor has provided fans with a look at his new costume:

While it could just be a trick of the lighting, it would seem as though Stallone’s new outfit is brighter in color than his previous attire. His character, Ogord, was introduced in Vol. 2 as a leading member of the Ravagers and an old crew mate of Michael Rooker‘s Yondu. He was last seen reforming his old team in one of the movie’s many post-credits scenes, which consisted of big names like Ving Rhames, Miley Cyrus, and Shang-Chi‘s Michelle Yeoh. In the comics, Ogord is a powerful member of the Guardians known as Starhawk. He possesses numerous amazing abilities, such as flight, energy manipulation, and precognition. It remains to be seen if any of this will make it to the MCU’s live-action take on Stakar, or if the complicated hero will fall into the group of cosmic beings slightly de-powered for the sake of the Guardians story.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Wants Kingpin to Square Up with Spider-Man in the MCU

Vincent D’Onofrio Wants Kingpin to Square Up with Spider-Man in the MCU

Vincent D’Onofrio’s work as Wilson Fisk on the Netflix streaming series Daredevil is held in the highest of regards by Marvel fans, with many believing his Kingpin sits firmly within the top tier of modern live-action Marvel villains. Rumors of D’Onofrio’s return to the role have been rampant for months and with Hawkeye, the project at the center of those rumors, set to stream soon, fans are becoming anxious to see if the Emmy-nominated actor will indeed reprise the role in the MCU.

D’Onofrio recently talked with Jake’s Takes and when asked what Marvel hero he’d like to see Fisk go toe-to-toe with should he return to the role, the actor had a reply at the ready saying, “it definitely has to be Spider-Man. One day…I’m hoping. We’ll see if they ask me to do it.” Obviously a well-read man, D’Onofrio continued, “Kingpin lived in a world of Punisher, Daredevil and Spider-Man so that would be the one.” Fisk, of course, debuted in 1967 in issue #50 of The Amazing Spider-Man. Over the years and especially at the hands of Frank Miller, the character evolved from a stereotypical crime lord into the monstrous threat and the archenemy of Daredevil.

It’s those connections to the Daredevil comics, specifically to the character of Maya Lopez/Echo, that have fans on (king)pins and needles as to whether D’Onofrio will return as Fisk in Hawkeye. In the comics, Fisk raised Lopez as his own daughter after killing her father. With the character of Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, getting her own spinoff series, sentiment is growing that Fisk MUST play a part in her life and that D’Onofrio is the man for the job.

Watch the entire video interview below and watch D’Onofrio reprise the role of Kingpin (hopefully) in Hawkeye, which begins streaming on Disney Plus with a 2-episode premiere on November 24th.

  • RUMOR: ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Reshoots to Add Cameos From an MCU Show

RUMOR: ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Reshoots to Add Cameos From an MCU Show

Just recently, we learned that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is entering an extended reshoot schedule. The main reasons were accredited to the pandemic having influenced initial production and they’re trying to make up for it. Reshoots aren’t uncommon anymore for films nowadays, especially from Marvel Studios. Yet, it seems like there might be one more reason behind the move and they are trying to add some additional cameos that weren’t possible due to production overlaps.

GWW’s KC Walsh has shared on Twitter that one of the reasoning the production entered reshoots is to work on a pivotal scene. He highlights that they also are trying to add people that were busy filming a show at the time only later to clarify that it was a production from Marvel Studios in response to another tweet. It opens up quite a few questions, as the implication is that the series was being filmed during the time the Doctor Strange sequel was in production. It’s especially noteworthy that it is specifically for a “pivotal scene” in the film.

    https://twitter.com/TheComixKid/status/1460008555415625728

It’s not the first time a rumor is pointing to a major cameo in the film. There were theories about an Ultron Sentry finding their way in from What If…? alongside Captain Carter. There’s also the connection with Spider-Man opening the film up to potentially directly tying into the events of that film that might spiral the madness mentioned in the film’s title. At this point, it almost seems like anything is possible with whatever the multiverse has to offer.

  • The Studio Behind ‘Castlevania’ Nearly Made a Marvel Anthology Series

The Studio Behind ‘Castlevania’ Nearly Made a Marvel Anthology Series

Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to be what it is today, Marvel Comics found success in its animated series. One of those was X-Men: The Animated Series, which is coming back as X-Men ’97 on Disney+, joining the newly announced Spider-Man: Freshman Year. However, as popular as those titles are, there are still plenty of Marvel projects that don’t always come to fruition – including animated ones.

During a recent Twitter thread, Brad Graeber, the CEO of Castlevania creators Powerhouse Animation, revealed he pitched a Marvel series in 2014 titled Marvel Era. The project was to coincide with Marvel’s 75th anniversary. It was pitched as a short-form anthology series that would have shorts covering various eras, each with its own animation style. He unveiled a video that teased what would have been, including a hint at the artwork that would have been used for each character/era.

Graeber wrote approximately 14 “rough” concepts for Marvel Era, including a 40s-centric Captain America D-day story, as well as a Submariner U-boat story and a 60s X-Men story featuring a mutant who “led a cult with his powers.” He also explained there was a “very cinema 70s” Luke Cage and Iron Fist, as well as an 80s Punisher story that leaned into Scarface and Miami Vice.

Unfortunately, though, Marvel Era never moved forward as “studio politics were complicated, and we were green.” For Graeber, it’s something he has come to terms with over time as he’s since gotten to work on the critically-acclaimed Castlevania for Netflix.

  • Victoria Alonso On ‘Eternals’ Critical Reception and Marvel Studios Commitment to Diversity

Victoria Alonso On ‘Eternals’ Critical Reception and Marvel Studios Commitment to Diversity

Victoria Alonso recently was promoted to President of Physical and Postproduction, Visual Effects, and Animation. She’s been very outspoken on her hopes and passions to continue pushing the envelope on diversity in Hollywood. She was presented with the Visionary Award during the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ Outfest Legacy Awards event and gave a passionate speech, especially with the recent critical reception surrounding Eternals and their future commitment to diversity.

We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s OK. That’s OK. We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide. Diversity and inclusion is not a political game for us. It is 100 percent a responsibility because you don’t get to have the global success that we have given the Walt Disney Company without the support of people around the world of every kind of human there is.

    Victoria Alonso

She also went on to highlight their commitment to diversity when it comes to storytelling. Eternals was a big step with the MCU’s first gay and deaf superheroes among the main cast. She goes on to highlight:

I want to do it all. I want to make sure that I get out there and I create as much change as time will allow.”

    Victoria Alonso

The studio has been pushing more into this direction, especially with shows focused on their first Muslim-American superhero in Ms. Marvel, and a Mexican lead in Gael Garcia Bernal with the long-rumored Werewolf by Night Disney+ special. They’ve been pushing the franchise into new territory and made landmarks through projects like Shang-Chi and Black Panther. So, the MCU might continue to expand in important and relevant ways.

  • Marvel Studios Officially Reveals ‘Shang-Chi’s Place in the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Officially Reveals ‘Shang-Chi’s Place in the Sacred Timeline

Either you watch them by release date or you watch them chronologically. For Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, there can be only one (way to watch)! For the chronologically minded, Marvel Studios has now given you one less thing to stress about and revealed just where Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings fits into established chronology. And it’s right where you probably expected it to be, more or less.

According to the “Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order” section of Disney Plus, the events of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings take place after the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Background details already indicated that Shang-Chi’s adventures took place post-Blip despite some early and ill-advised rumors that it would take place DURING the gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Of course, there is one question left open: with the MCU’s Spider-Man films not available on Disney Plus, fans still don’t know exactly where to place Spider-Man: Far From Home during their rewatch.

You can check out our complete chronological viewing order here and our release order viewing order here. You can also check here for our very handy viewing order by character pages.

  • Danish Synopsis for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Teases “Previous Versions of Spider-Man”

Danish Synopsis for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Teases “Previous Versions of Spider-Man”

A listing by the Danish film site Nordisk Film Cinemas now lists “previous version of Spider-Man” in its description of next month’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The first part of the synopsis is in line with what’s been seen around the web before; it’s unclear if the Danish theater system is working with official information that might be revealed at this Tuesday’s fan event in Los Angeles or if they’re simply basing the description off of rumors about the film. A second trailer for the film, which is set to go to theaters on December 17th, will debut at the fan event along with promised “big surprises.” It’s possible that among those surprises, Sony could reveal the return of actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as the Spider-Men of their respective universes.

The return of Maguire and Garfield, known as the worst kept secret in Hollywood, is still a topic of debate among fans with some refusing to believe the two actors are back. It is known that villains from both previous Spider-verses will appear with Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro having been confirmed by the actors themselves. The film’s first trailer also heavily teased Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and seemed to feature a quick shot of the Lizard, played by Rhys Ifans in The Amazing Spider-Man. As you can see, it’s easy to see why one wouldn’t believe the actors who played the Spider-Men in those films would not return. True Believers!

  • Murphy’s Team-Up, Volume 6: Animated Revivals

    Murphy’s Team-Up, Volume 6: Animated Revivals

This week, we were lucky enough to have Adam Barnhardt join us for the Team-Up. Adam is the creator of the Scout Comics book Sh*itshow and the upcoming Keepers of the Cosmos. Adam also writes at Comicbook.com, where he covers Marvel, comics and Mountain Dew!

Gargoyles' creator hopes Disney Plus popularity will pave the way for sequels - Polygon

If the rollout of Disney+ and the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that we’re more than ready to reboot Gargoyles. The show itself instantly trended once the service launched and now, it’s beginning to dominate collecting circles each time a new toy is released. It was the first of its kind — a dark and gritty series with a world that was intricately crafted and story arcs that lasted any number of episodes. In a world where IP is king, and Hollywood runs on reboots, reimaginations, and continuations, there’s little reason to not bring Gargoyles back into the mix.

Kleefeld on Comics: The Silver Surfer Cartoon Review

As a huge fan of Marvel’s space side, I would love to see a revival of the Silver Surfer animated series. The 1998 series has its charm and I have a lot of nostalgia for it, thanks to the great voice cast (James Blendick as Galactus!) and the many references to Stan Lee and Moebius’ series.  I would love to see a series about Galactus’ herald again, especially since What If…? appealed to me a lot in terms of style and portrayal of cosmic scale. Silver Surfer in a similar animation technique would look insane. Especially since this concept allows for different visual plays and animation techniques. One series that I have in my mind as a potential foundation for animation would be the Silver Surfer: Black series by Donny Cates and Tradd More. This kind of psychedelic and surreal imagery would look great in an animated series that could creatively portray the philosophical dimension of the Silver Surfer story.

The Best Moments From Spider-Man: The Animated Series

I’m gonna have to go with another ‘90s show in Spider-Man: The Animated Series as that was not only the Spider-Man of my youth but also some of the first serialised television programming I remember watching. The series showed a great progression in it’s version of Peter over its 5 seasons and covered a great array of comic stories. It also showed an early version of translating the Marvel comics team-ups to screen in a crossover with  X-Men: The Animated Series in Season 2. It also featured a couple of memorable multiversal crossovers in Season 5 with Secret Wars and an early version a Spider-verse story which it mashed together with the Clone Saga which started in the comics at the same time, resulting in the ‘90s Peter meeting Stan Lee in ‘our world’ which blew my young mind. Occasionally the ambient themes of the series still pop into my head so I would love to see a return of that or at least see what became of Spidey in that world through X-Men ‘97 perhaps.

Gravity Falls - Pilot Highlight Reel - House of Cool Studios - YouTube

An animated series is love to see revived on Disney+ would be Gravity Falls. Whether it be a film or another season I’d like to see those characters return and explore even more of the secrets behind the town. I feel like show needed quite prematurely and still had a lot more room to breath. If they were to bring it back it would be cool to see a bit of a time jump, with adult Dipper and Mable returning to Gravity Falls after all those years.

Hasbro Releases Full Episodes Of 'G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero' On YouTube (For Free) - Goliath

I grew up in the 80s when Saturday morning cartoons ruled. I could wake up and get a couple solid hours of cartoons in before my Mom rolled out of bed: Smurfs, Voltron, Jem (my God was Jem so cool!), Thundercats, Transformers, He-Man and my absolute favorite (which I almost always actually watched on weekday mornings before school) G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. We got 95 glorious episodes that brought almost every one of my action figures to life but it was Doctor Mindbender usurped control of Cobra from Cobra Commander that shit got real. The animated series embraced the surreal aspects of the comics and line of action figures in a way the incredibly disappointing efforts at bringing the characters to life in live-action have been to scared to do and the pinnacle of that was in the beginning of season two when they introduced Serpentor. Seeing that bad sum’bitch flying around in his air chariot, carrying the DNA of the world’s greatest conquerors was the high point of the series and among my favorite memories of cartoons as a kid. With the people in charge of the live-action rights incapable of understanding that G.I. Joe isn’t a franchise that needs to be “grounded in realism”, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is the best version where likely to ever get, so bringing it back with all of its wild ideas is the best bet for the future of the franchise.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series - Season 1 Review - IGN

One of the more unsung animated series in comic book lore was Green Lantern, as we followed the adventures of Hal Jordan and Kilowog through space. The series only went one season and had a fascinating story with Hal and Kilowog welcoming Razer, a character with shades of gray to the team. The series chronicled battles with the Red Lanterns Corp who was trying to eliminate Green Lanterns. The animation was smooth and the story was sound. The characters were so fun and full of life I’d love to see that series brought back to the screen. Considering the live action Green Lantern series that’s coming, it wouldn’t be a bad companion.

Teen Titans: 10 Easter Eggs In The Animated Series Only Comic Fans Caught

The original Teen Titans animated series from the mid-2000s will always be one of my favorite series of all time. Maybe I’m not giving enough credit to the Powerpuff Girls, but I think for me Teen Titans is the reason I ever fell in love with superheroes and their stories. Plenty of it was silly, but they also had some dark storylines from the comics like Judas Contract and introducing Trigon. Deathstroke was only known as “Slade” but he was pretty damn great and is still one of my favorite villains of all time. Unfortunately, Teen Titans got the Teen Titans GO! treatment, so a genuine revival seems like it’s been off the table for a while.

Someone made a '90s cartoon version of the Spider-Man trailer - CNET

If Marvel Studios wants to revive X-Men: The Animated Series, why not bring back even more of the Marvel Animated Universe and revive Spider-Man: The Animated Series as well? Yes, there’s already an animated MCU spider-series on the way, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that people will take as many versions of the web-head as they can swallow. If the X-Men series picks up where the old show left off, a new Spider-Man cartoon could serve to move the universe forward. I would start the series decades after the end of the last season, with Peter and MJ’s daughter Mayday taking up the mantle as Spider-Girl. Throw in an arc for Miles and use elements of both the MC2 and Ultimate comics to create an original and fresh new take on the Spider-Man mythos.

  • ‘Eternals’ Crosses $100 Million at the Domestic Box Office

‘Eternals’ Crosses $100 Million at the Domestic Box Office

In its second weekend, Marvel Studios’ Eternals managed to successfully cross $100 million at the domestic box office. While the film felt the expected second-weekend drop, falling 61-percent, Eternals retained the top spot with $27.5 million for a 10-day domestic total of $118.4 million.

For comparison’s sake, the 61-percent dip is less than both Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Sony’s Venom: Let There be Carnage. However, it’s higher than that of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. With muddled reviews, however, the film wasn’t expected to have quite as much holdover as Shang-Chi.

While it still has no China release, the film is doing quite well overseas for Marvel Studios. The film pulled in another $75 million at the international box office with Korea bringing in another $22 million and the UK pulling in $143 million. As of now, Eternals is sitting at $281.4 million worldwide, with the film looking to cross the $300 million worldwide mark sometime this week.

Giving Eternals a run for its money this weekend was Clifford the Big Red Dog. The film, which took in $22 million, was released both in theaters and on Paramount+. Despite the hybrid release, Clifford surpassed expectations and earned one of the best starts of the pandemic era for a family film. The hybrid release of Clifford was one Paramount also used for Paw Patrol, which proved to be a huge hit for the studio.

While Clifford came in second place, Dune stayed in the top three after earning $5.5 million. The film has amassed $93.1 million at the domestic box office thus far and looks on track to cross $100 million this week.

Eternals is playing exclusively in theaters, while Dune is in theaters and available on HBO Max.
