In February 2021, a trade report revealed that J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot was developing a Superman project with Ta-Nehisi Coates on board to write. The film was reportedly set to feature a Black actor in the role and by mid-2021, a search for a Black director for the film was underway.
After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-chairs of the newly formed DC Studios, Gunn revealed that the project was still in development and noted that IF it ended up being produced, it would be under DC Studios Elseworlds banner.
