Live-Action ‘Blade Runner’ Series Adds Writer ‘Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa

There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for iconic franchises making their return, as Ridley Scott is currently developing a live-action sequel series to the popular Blade Runner series. It will be titled Blade Runner 2099 and is a direct sequel to Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049. Silka Luisa, who is currently showrunning Starz’s Shining Girls series will write and executive produce the project. Scott Free Productions is working on the project in association with Alcon Entertainment and Amazon Studios. We first heard of the project back in November from Scott, who teased that they were writing the pilot and bible for the series at the time.

It’s not the first series adaptation that takes place within this universe, but it is the first to do so in live-action. Blade Runner: Black Lotus was an anime adaptation that was released last year on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll. It was set in 2032 and featured a female replicant voiced by Iron Fist’s Jessica Henwick. Alcon has been busy expanding the iconic franchise after purchasing the rights to it back in 2011.

While Villeneuve‘s film starring Ryan Gosling didn’t leave a big dent in the box office, it went on to become a cult classic among fans and critics. It’s also the second TV adaptation of a popular Ridley Scott project, as his Alien franchise is also currently getting the long-form storytelling format. So, the famous director is going to be quite busy moving forward.

  • REVIEW: ‘As We See It’ Is Charmingly Honest

REVIEW: ‘As We See It’ Is Charmingly Honest

Life isn’t easy out there, especially not if it feels like the world is stacked against you. Everyone strives to be like those that seemingly have it all together, even if they may struggle in their way. As We See It takes a closer look at that very struggle through the eyes of Jack (Rick Glassman), Violet (Sue Ann Pien), and Harrison (Albert Rutecki), three roommates on the autistic spectrum. In the past, the portrayal of autism has been rough in films and TV. Yet, this series by Jason Katims finds a humanizing way to induce comedy and drama that shows a charmingly honest look at their lives and those around them.

What I believe this show handles best is that it avoids autism as a caricature or even turning it into the butt of the joke. Instead, it embraces its characters and every aspect that defines them. We’re not in a sitcom. This show warms your heart by showing you the highs when even the smallest challenge is accomplished – a lesson perhaps many of us should learn as well. Harrison managing to walk down the street may seem unimportant but it means the world to him. He manages it because of the support system he has in Sosie Bacon‘s Mandy.

Speaking of, her role in the story highlights another strength of this series. While Jack, Violet, and Harrison are technically our main trio, a lot of time is spent fleshing out the people around them and how their lives start to interweave. Mandy’s storyline is about her questioning to follow her dreams – if they truly were her own – or continue the work she’s doing for these three. The show doesn’t harp on drama but doesn’t shy away from it. That’s why I mention it is “honest” earlier in the review.

They don’t sugarcoat autism and how it affects not only those living with it but those closest to them. Violet’s relationship with her brother Van (Chris Pang) is a great showcase of exactly that. He takes harsh actions due to having to handle it on his own after the passing of their parents. There’s so much pressure already on him that he’s become overprotective. It’s a natural progression of his character that is punctuated throughout his development in this show, heightened by Pien and Pang‘s performances.

However, I will say there is one plotline that seemingly felt predictable yet forced at the same time. I do not want to spoil it, but I feel once it happens many will understand what it is. It exists purely to add drama and it takes away from a character’s nuanced struggle. The idea is fine, but I do feel like if it was slowly introduced for a future season it may have more impact, as well as not taken away from an already nuanced struggle that a character faced.

There are some moments where the show takes its time with storylines, but it’s part of its charm. It offers an unrelenting experience of the struggles our main characters go through. Glassman‘s Jack tries to take a very direct approach to solve his issues while the underlying emotional challenges are yet to be addressed. Through Violet’s experiences, the series highlights the cruelty of the real world and how unkind people can be. And even those that are good-natured at their core, like Harrison, may be misunderstood by a world that just simply is untrusting.

When tackling such a sensitive topic, there’s always going to be a fine line that is hard to keep intact. I can’t help but praise how As We See It manages to do it so well. There’s a charming honesty at display in its portrayal of its characters and the struggles they face. It teaches you that no matter how difficult it may be, there’s always going to be a moment to smile, connect, and live. Even if there may be a new challenge just around the corner, that only means well face a new opportunity to grow. Perhaps for some, this show can do exactly that.

  • ‘The Boys’ Season 3 Brazilian Teaser Reveals a June Release Date

‘The Boys’ Season 3 Brazilian Teaser Reveals a June Release Date

We’ve been anxiously awaiting when the next season of The Boys would finally release. It’s been a long wait, but the next season will build upon where the last one left us off with, as Homelander is forced to work alongside people he hates. His anger is slowly boiling over and promises an explosive next season.

We got a few teases with the arrival of Soldier Boy as a new threat for our ragtag team to face and it seems the wait isn’t that much longer. A teaser may have leaked early, as it was shared by @Voughthq that ends on the note that the series will release on June 3rd, 2022.

It’ll be interesting to see if the official release on other media platforms will follow, as the official account doesn’t include it just yet. Still, a June release date seems quite realistic and with the simplicity of this teaser, they might still be working on some of the effects for the next season. As such, we might not get a full trailer until around March as they build up to the release, but we’ll have to wait to see if this release date was meant to release.

  • REVIEW: Wheel of Time 1×8, “The Eye of the World”

REVIEW: Wheel of Time 1×8, “The Eye of the World”

Over the course of its first season, Amazon’s Wheel of Time adaptation opted to turn the Dragon Reborn into a mystery to be solved. For six episodes, viewers were left to ponder who would be the Dragon Reborn: Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene or Nynaeve. Book readers, of course, knew it would be none other than Rand. However, the series looked to be going in a potentially different direction – until episode seven confirmed Rand to be the Dragon Reborn. “The Eye of the World” sees him come to terms with who he is, all while he recalls a prior life he’s lived. In the end, it makes for a quiet finale, to an otherwise fantastic first season.

The episode picks back up with Moiraine and Rand making their way through the blight in search of the Dark One (Ishamael). As they fight their way through the blight, the others remain back in the city of Fal Dara, trying to figure out a way to help. Their initial reaction is to run after Moiraine and Rand, however, they know that should they step foot into the blight, it would more than likely result in death. Still, Lan is willing to chance it in order to find Moiraine. So, he uses tracking skills taught to him by Nynaeve to find her, while she aides the others in finding another way to help. The storyline essentially stretches over the show’s nearly one-hour timeframe, and yet, despite so much happening, the story ultimately feels stalled.

As the episode cuts between the two locations, we see Rand make his way to the Eye of the World with Moiraine following close behind him. Flashes begin to appear as Rand recalls a prior life in which he’s already been to the Eye of the World and faced the Dark One. Their last meeting ended with the Dark One winning. This time, though, Moiraine is willing to do what is needed to ensure Rand does not stray from the light – even if it means killing him. As Rand enters another realm with the Dark One, one where he’s presented with a future with Egwene in which they have a child. It’s a future he wants, and one Rand nearly gives everything up for. Thankfully, however, he soon realizes that the future he’s being presented with is nothing more than a fantasy. Even if he can make it a reality, it isn’t a future Egwene has a say in and therefore isn’t one he can accept. It’s this moment in which Rand successfully overcomes the Dark in order to defeat the Dark One – at least temporarily.

Unfortunately, though, by this point, an army of Trollocs have already made their way to Fal Dara along with Fades. While the city itself does not fall, those that stayed behind to fight soon find themselves facing certain death. While Egwene and Nynaeve help by accessing the One Power and helping Lady Amalisa (Sandra Yi Sencindiver) channel enough power to try and take down the armies before they make their way to the city. The scene is a stunning one as the lighting stands in stark contrast against the gloomy background. It’s made all the more powerful as the women collapse under the weight of the One Power, with Egwene seemingly the only survivor, until she heals Nynaeve.

When Rand “defeats” the Dark One, he makes Moiraine promise to tell the others he has died to ensure he can head out on his own. It’s a strong ending to an otherwise uneven episode, however, it’s the closing scene viewers will most likely be talking about going into Season 2. As the episode ends, we see a young girl on a beach. Out of nowhere, a horde of ships come into focus in the ocean, catching her eye. It’s the Seanchan, and they’ve seemingly created a tsunami upon their arrival.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the first season of Wheel of Time because it has successfully managed to combine excellent character work with a love of the source material. It never tried to go full action series as the show respects its source material, which is something most adaptations fail to do these days. Unfortunately, though, because of how eager the show is to stay true to the source, it sometimes feels unsure of how to adapt Robert Jordan‘s work. While there are some fine character moments in “The Eye of the World,” the episode only barley moves the storyline forward.

Yes, there are some big moments, such as Moiraine losing access to the One power and Rand making the decision to leave the others are quite memorable. However, the bits in between are slow-going. It’s a shame, honestly, because the first season was a great success overall. “The Eye of the World” seems to feel like an afterthought. It’s slow, the few action bits are stellar, but the CGI work is wonky, and the Dark One could have been handled so much better.

  • Amazon Studios Adapting Olivie Blake’s ‘The Atlas Six’

Amazon Studios Adapting Olivie Blake’s ‘The Atlas Six’

It looks like TikTok has become quite the jumping-off point for some new talent, as there were quite a few bidders for the rights to adapt TikTok sensation The Atlas Six. The book by author Alexene Farol Follmuth, also known as Olivie Blake, alongside the production company that brought The Crown to life, Brightstar. Amazon won the bidding war for the rights and will release it on its streaming platform as a series.

It’ll adapt the story of six young magicians who are selected to become part of The Alexandrian Society, a secret society of the world. Each decade, only six are chosen to join as trust and eventual betrayal develops between the participants to join the elusive ranks. It was self-published through Kindle Digital Publishing but became viral on the social media platform, which led to a publishing bidding war. Tor is currently working on a revised and edited version to release in March 2022.

Follmuth will act as an executive producer alongside Brightstar founders Tanya Seghatchian and John Woodward. It’s quite interesting to see how Amazon Studios is trying to create a niche with fantasy productions to combat the likes of Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation. They just recently released The Wheel of Time to critical acclaim and are in no way slowing down.

  • Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ Adds Amarah-Jae St. Aubyin and Grace Saif

Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ Adds Amarah-Jae St. Aubyin and Grace Saif

It looks like the upcoming adaptation of Anansi Boys is picking up the pace, as the six-part series has found its female leads. Amarah-Jae St. Aubyin, who some might know from Steve McQueen‘s Lovers Rock, and the Small Axe anthology will play the role of Rosie Noah. She’ll be joined by 13 Reasons Why‘s Grace Saif, who’ll play the character of Detective Constable Daisy Day. Neil Gaiman, the author of the original novels and producer of the series, shared his thoughts on the casting in The Hollywood Reporter piece on their casting:

When you are casting something on the scale of Anansi Boys you need female leads who are as accomplished, charming, and brilliant as, well, Malachi Kirby in both his incarnations. Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn and Grace Saif are those women. [They’re] both funny, honest, brilliant actresses, and you will fall in love with both of them.

    Neil Gaiman

The series is currently filming in Scotland, it’ll follow Malachi Kirby‘s Nancy, who discovers that his father was the trickster god of stories, the titular Anansi. He also uncovers that he has a brother named Spider (also played by Kirby), who is going to make his life quite a bit more troubling. Endor Productions and RED Production Company are involved in the project with Gaiman and Sir Lenny Henry co-writing the series. Douglas Mackinnon is acting as showrunner alongside the original author.

Amazon Prime’s ‘The Wheel of Time’ Finds Its Season 2 Cast

The Wheel of Time‘s first season has been welcomed with much praise as the book adaptation finally found its way on Amazon Prime. • Amazon Prime Nearing Deal to Adapt ‘Mass Effect’ as a Series

Amazon Prime Nearing Deal to Adapt ‘Mass Effect’ as a Series

Mass Effect was released to critical acclaim in 2007. The 3rd-person shooter developed by Bioware initially followed the story of an almost fully-customizable character named Commander Shepherd. Their mission was simple: hunt down a rogue Spectre named Saren across the galaxy. Its success led to a sequel that has become heralded as one of the greatest games of all time. Now, the franchise is finally heading into live-action, as Amazon Studios is nearing a deal to develop a series based on the gaming franchise.

Jennifer Saalke, the head of Amazon Studios, said that we will see the studio “continuing to invest in fantasy genre of all kinds. We have a genre-focused team on the ground in Studios who work tirelessly with our creative partners on those slates, and you can look forward to more.” Mass Effect was highlighted in the article by Deadline about the studio’s upcoming projects to do exactly that.

The franchise saw a resurgence with the release of the Legendary Edition, which includes the first three entries of the game. While the Andromeda game was controversial during its release, there’s a lot of hope for the recently announced Mass Effect 4. It’ll be interesting to see if the series adapts Commander Shepherd’s story or takes a unique approach within this universe. There are many corners that could get explored in a series with some familiar faces popping up here and there. Sadly, we won’t get to choose our protagonists’ dialogues this time around.

  • ‘Wheel of Time’ is Amazon Prime’s Most-Watched Premiere of 2021

‘Wheel of Time’ is Amazon Prime’s Most-Watched Premiere of 2021

It looks like Amazon Prime’s latest new series, Wheel of Time, is off to a strong start as Deadline is reporting that the fantasy novel adaptation has become the most-watched series of 2021 for Prime Video. Not only that, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke has highlighted that it’s in the top 4 of the streaming services launches. So, it looks like they are quite satisfied with its performance and the new series might have a bright future ahead.

She also added that the series had some of the highest completion rates they’ve seen for a series with third parties pointing it to being the most talked-about release for Amazon so far. The Rosamund Pike-led project was even outpacing Netflix’s popular fantasy adaptation, The Witcher. Early predictions have come true, as it was poised to be their biggest opening since the second season of The Boys.

Amazon has also highlighted that they are aiming to offer more transparency for the future, which seems to be a reactionary move due to Netflix also offering insight into their top ten streaming performances on a weekly basis. It’ll be interesting to see if we get insight into how exactly these series perform across the board, especially with the ever-growing competition.
