Jason Momoa Teases Higher Stakes for ‘AQUAMAN’ Sequel

It’s been quite some time since we last saw Arthur Curry square off against his brother, Ocean Master, in a battle for the Four Kingdoms and the safety of the surface world. With stakes as high as that, it’s hard to imagine how the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, may top such a premise. But according to Jason Momoa himself, the stakes are indeed a lot higher in the sequel.

It won’t be long until we get an idea of what the stakes of this film will be since DC Fandome 2021 is less than a month away. Production for the film has been underway since June and just a few weeks ago, Aquaman’s new updated suits were revealed. By the time DC Fandome comes, they’ll likely have some sort of sizzle reel to debut.

‘Aquaman’ Sequel Adds 3 to Its Cast of Characters

The king of the seven seas is set to make his big return in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Plot details are still very much under wraps and much of the films casting has yet to be made public but looks to be making some moves as multiple new cast members have joined the upcoming sequel to the 2018 hit.

If you couldn’t get enough of King Shark in The Suicide Squad, another shark seems to be making their way too the DCEU as Indya Moore has been cast as Karshon. Jani Zhao will play Stingray, an original character created for the movie, though it is unknown if she will be friend or foe.

Vincent Regan will play King Atlan in a recast from the original film. The role was originally played by Graham McTavish and is unknown why the role was not reprised, possibly due to his involvement in House of the Dragon. Randall Park will also return as Dr. Stephen Shin who featured in a smaller role in the original film.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom Is currently set to release in theaters on December 16th, 2022.

  • Jason Momoa Reveals New Stealth Suit for ‘AQUAMAN’ Sequel

Jason Momoa Reveals New Stealth Suit for ‘AQUAMAN’ Sequel

The first Aquaman film was quite the hit, bringing in over a billion dollars at the box offices with praise from critics and fans alike. It wasn’t long before a sequel was announced and that Jason Momoa and James Wan would be back. Now, with filming underway on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa and Wan took to Instagram to reveal Arthur Curry’s brand new suit for the upcoming sequel.

In a new post on Instagram, Momoa showcases the armor of Atlan that appeared in the first film, but alongside that was a new look at the stealth suit. The new suit is quite the vast departure from the other with a dark blue look with silver armor plating.

In Wan’s post to Instagram revealing the stealth suit, he went into further details explaining how the suit works and what inspired them to make the suit. The suit is Atlantean tech is based on a Cephalopod’s ability to camouflage with its surrounding area. Wan stated that he and writer David Leslie Johnson were inspired by the Aquaman mini-series from the 80’s, written by Neal Pozner and Craig Hamilton.

Plot details for the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom remain under wraps but it seems likely that Arthur would be using a suit such as this to sneak around in said kingdom, without the bright orange and green giving him away like a construction worker on a busy road. The reveal of this suit may also mean we may see some filming take place outside and get us a better look at what’s going on in the film.

  • James Wan Shares First Set Photo from ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’ As Production Starts

James Wan Shares First Set Photo from ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’ As Production Starts

It looks like the Aquaman sequel has officially started production, as James Wan shares the first image from the set. Around three weeks ago, the director shared the official title for the film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom that teased with an Instagram post from their production meeting. While we still know very little about the film, Wan’s Instagram post confirms that the working title is indeed Necrus, which is the name of an underwater civilization.  The set photo showcases an icy cavern that may be the location of where this second submarine city resides that is about to greet the world once more.

The only real casting we have is that of Pilou Asbaek and he may play the ruler Mordo of the underwater city. Initially, we assumed that the character might be the Atlantean eco-terrorist Corum Rath. Of course, the working title of Necrus could also be a way to throw people off of the actual film’s story, which was co-written by Jason Momoa. We’ll see if we get any more set photos in the coming weeks that may offer a closer hint at what we can expect. The production start also matches a report from four months ago by Discussing Film, who also revealed they’re eyeing a June start date in the United Kingdom. The film is currently eyeing a December 16th release in 2022. Momoa will return alongside Amber Hard and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who are reprising their respective roles from the last film.

  • James Wan Reveals Title for ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

James Wan Reveals Title for ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

The first Aquaman film proved that anything was possible after grossing over a billion at the box office and reinventing the character of Arthur Curry in the best way possible. The character had always been the butt of the joke with people mocking his abilities to be able to speak to marine life and swim really fast. Once Jason Momoa took over the role, there was obviously a dramatic shift in the character, adopting Samoan culture and giving Arthur a new direction. A sequel was quickly greenlit and we all wondered what the future has in store for the character.  Director James Wan luckily gave us a glimpse with his latest Instagram post revealing the title for the upcoming sequel, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.

Not much is known about the film as plot details remain under wraps but it seems like the ‘Lost Kingdom’ could be a reference to the films working title, Necrus. Necrus was another underwater civilization that appeared after a rift opened and spat out the city. A while back we got word that Pilou Asbæk would be joining the upcoming film in an undisclosed role but the recent announcement could hint at him playing the tyrannical ruler, Mongo. He once attempted to strike an alliance with Atlantis to wage war on the surface world. There’s a chance that Orm could get involved to repeat his goal from the first entry.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is currently set to release on December 16th, 2022, and will be directed by James Wan.

  • Jason Momoa Reveals He Co-Wrote ‘Aquaman 2’

Jason Momoa Reveals He Co-Wrote ‘Aquaman 2’

2018’s Aquaman took one of the oldest as well as most prominent characters in DC and rose the character to new heights. For years, he was always the butt of the joke, as many saw him as a glorified lifeguard with a social life that consisted of marine life. The first film saw the return of Jason Momoa as the titular Atlantean hero after his debut in a brief sequence in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He was the product of two worlds, a relationship that never should’ve been. In the franchise’s first entry, he teamed up with Mera and Vulko to find the Trident of Atlan and unite the seven kingdoms that once made up Atlantis.

Following the film’s critical and financial success, a sequel was quickly greenlit with James Wan returning to direct. While plot details for the upcoming film are still under wraps, Momoa recently shared some interesting tidbits on The Drew Barrymore Show on the film’s production:

After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea and the best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off and all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that like you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers so that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming.

Momoa being much more hands-on with the upcoming sequel shows just how important this role is to him. He also confirmed that filming on the anticipated follow-up begins this summer. Hopefully, we’ll get more casting news on the rest of the sequel’s cast as we get closer to the production start.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbaek Joins ‘Aquaman 2’

‘Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbaek Joins ‘Aquaman 2’

With filming on the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s billion-dollar blockbuster looking to ramp up its production in June, we were bound to hear some news on it sooner than later. Plot details for the film have been kept under wraps and it’s unknown as to who or where we’ll see our new king of Atlantis off too next, but it seems that we have a new addition to the film. Deadline has unveiled that Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbaek, best know for his role as Euron Greyjoy of the Iron Islands, will come to face former Khal Drogo, Jason Momoa, in the upcoming sequel for the film.

It’s unknown who Asbaek will be playing in the film, as they remain secretive. Just a few weeks ago, we reported on casting breakdowns for the sequel going around. One character in particular named Kore. The role was for an actor in the 40-50-year-old range and looked to be for a villain as he was described as “domineering and cunning,” which could be a perfect role for Asbaek. The role in question I believe to be that of Corum Rath, an Atlantean eco-terrorist who sought to bring the war to the surface world who sought to overthrow Arthur.

Aquaman 2 is currently set to release on December 16th, 2022 with James Wan returning too direct. The film will also feature the return of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Willem Dafoe.

  • James Wan’s ‘Aquaman’ Spin-Off ‘The Trench’ Not Moving Forward

James Wan’s ‘Aquaman’ Spin-Off ‘The Trench’ Not Moving Forward

No, it isn’t an April Fools joke. The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that two large adaptations are sadly not moving forward with the studio. One of them being the Aquaman spin-off focused on the newly introduced Trench. It would’ve been the first DC film to jump into a more horror-focused story, as it would explore the world of the deadly amphibious creatures that we saw in the Jason Momoa-led film. Director James Wan had been producing the film together with Peter Safran. It would’ve been based on a script by Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. The statement offered by Warner Bros. seems to hint that it is shelved for now but could be brought back to life at a later date. It isn’t the end for Wan’s time with DC, as he is still hard at work on the Aquaman sequel.

It seems that DC has decided to take a new direction with loosely interconnected pieces, which is why Ava Duvernay‘s New Gods got canceled. It seems that at one point they considered moving it to HBO Max, just like James Gunn‘s Peacemaker series, but decided against it. It seems that his work on the Aquaman sequel was considered enough and they want to potentially return to the idea at a later date. They want to focus more on the Atlanteans. So, we could see a different spin-off for Aqualad or whatever characters they introduce in the sequel. It’s going to be interesting how this affects their future slate and what we may expect from DC moving forward.

  • ‘ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE’: Schrödinger’s Cut

‘ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE’: Schrödinger’s Cut

Schrödinger’s cat is a thought experiment where a hypothetical cat may be considered simultaneously both alive and dead as a result of being linked to a random event that may or may not occur. In simple terms, if you place a cat and something that could kill the cat (a radioactive atom) in a box and sealed it, you would not know if the cat was dead or alive until you opened the box, so that until the box was opened, the cat was (in a sense) both “dead and alive”.

The road to Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a long and tumultuous one. No matter what people make of the finished product, it’s hard to dissociate it from not only everything that happened since Snyder left the project in May 2017 but also from everything that, for the time being, doesn’t seem to be happening in what concerns the so-called Snyderverse. So being, all events, from Snyder leaving the project to the movie Joss Whedon ended up releasing in theaters, from Snyder Cut‘s HBO Max release to the apparent lack of a final chapter to the story, helped to shape the, if not lasting, at least the immediate impression made by the four-hour epic.

Due to all of this, and much like the thought experiment that serves as the title to this article, the Snyder Cut seems to be in a situation/state that allows for apparently opposing conclusions to be verified and, for the time being, to surface as legitimate and valid outcomes of the entire endeavor.

    Introducing Characters

Unlike what Marvel has mostly been doing for over ten years, out of the six Justice League members only one had a solo movie as its introduction into the cinematic universe. Wonder Woman and Batman were introduced in Batman v Superman while Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman (even if briefly featured also in Dawn of Justice) got their first real chance to shine in Justice League. Considering what it takes to introduce a character in a meaningful way, it becomes apparent that (with 2017’s Justice League being “exhibit number one”) with a regular theatrical release’s runtime this strategy is a hard one to pull off, validating the MCU strategy over the one DC went for. Even when introducing T’Challa and Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, their presence wasn’t meant to be as prominent as some of the others in order not to do the characters any disservice.

But Snyder’s Justice League, with the help of the extended runtime that streaming allows for, was able to do a great job introducing both Cyborg and The Flash (but mostly Cyborg) even in such a packed script, by making them the heart of the movie (mostly Cyborg). It showed how meshing the origin story of a character (often of the most intense parts of one’s journey) with the continuing growth of others allows for a big emotional payoff, by having different personalities in different stages of development. It’s likely due to the runtime, but Snyder’s cut showed how the Marvel model of introducing main characters both is and isn’t the only way to go.

    The Runtime

A four-hour movie seems like a lot because of one simple thing: it is. But what has been noticeable by coming into contact with the way many have approached the viewing experience of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is that many ended up watching the entire thing in one go instead of the two or three sessions they were expecting to have to schedule. And that can only speak in favor of how, when faced with an engrossing activity, viewers will allow themselves to experience it fully no matter how daunting it may seem at the start.

Even if theatrical runtimes are often arranged in a way that allows for the biggest number of sessions every day, to sell more tickets, the idea that audiences can only be expected to pay attention for a very limited amount of time has also played a part in determining how long must a movie be. What we’ve now seen is that if the story needs it, and if the experience from a story standpoint is indeed improved (by allowing the introduction of relevant characters, arcs, and plot-points), studios should stop placing so many limits on what some directors can bring to the table. So being, and without losing track of what might make the most sense from a purely business point of view, the Snyder Cut has also shown us how that the same financial aspect of moviemaking can be safeguarded in a not so linear way. By making better movies, no matter if a bit longer than what is the usual norm, you end up opening up the possibility of bigger critical acclaim that, in these sort of blockbusters, more often than not tend to lead to better-received sequels and spin-offs. And that’s probably a more respectable way for studios to reach a bigger payday.

It’s likely due to how it ended up being released as it’s hard to believe that a 4-hour cut would make its way to theaters worldwide in a regular theatrical release, but Snyder’s cut showed how the regular runtime (even if extended that to Endgame’s 181min) both is and isn’t the only way to go. Even if the bottom line ends up being the money earned.

    The Experience

The most obvious takeaway for almost everybody after having watched Zack Snyder’s Justice League is that it is a much better experience, a much better movie, than the 2017 version. Every single character introduced in the movie ends being given a lot more substance, both heroes and villains. The plot itself makes a whole more sense as the reasons for character actions are properly explained and given time to mature in order to make sense within the frame of the story being told. The soundtrack is also a huge improvement from the one we got four years ago, with fewer callbacks to old themes and a composer focused on taking these characters forward, instead of being too relying on the past to make the score and the experience relevant.

All of this is fueled by what we all got from the 2017 cut. By what we didn’t get out of it. So being, the sheer existence of the original theatrical cut, by having so many issues, sort of makes the Snyder Cut look better than it has any right to. But at the same time, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is also made worse by Whedon’s version of the movie, in what is yet another opposing takeaway, but by no means no less valid than the one mentioned before.

Even if bringing a lot more to the table than the theatrical release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League suffers from an overall lack of novelty because, as bad as 2017’s cut was, the main characters are the same, the villains are basically the same and the story follows the same lines. One can only imagine how it would have been to watch it all for the first time in Snyder’s cut, and at the same time how not having experienced this latest version would make Whedon’s cut…not as bad. So, in a weird way, both versions of the movie make the other one look both better and worse, at the same time.

The Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment can be quickly resolved by simply opening the box and checking in on the cat. There is no box to open in the case of Zack Snyder’s Justice League to know if its “cat” lives or dies, so the next best thing to do is to give it time. Maybe in a few years, with the process it took to allow for the movie to finally be released left behind, audiences will finally be able to look at this cut as a more normal cinematic experience with less baggage, something that for the time being is a bit hard to do. But if I had to guess, the cat will not only be alive, it’ll be thriving.

  • ‘Aquaman 2’ Casting Three Supporting Roles

‘Aquaman 2’ Casting Three Supporting Roles

DC is are hard at work on the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman. The smash-hit offered a closer look at the underwater civilization of Atlantis. The ending of that film gave us a brief glimpse of the sequel’s direction, as a battle-damaged Black Manta is picked up by Stephen Shin. It looks like recent casting news by GWW might be hinting at a different direction. It seems he might be facing a much more vicious foe after all.

They are currently looking to cast the character named “Kore.” They are specific about the character having a British accent and being in the age range of 40 to 50 years-of-age. GWW believes that the character may be the Fisher King, who is the leader of N.E.M.O. and an ally of Black Jack. He is also described as “domineering and cunning” that would match this description, but we could also see the leader of the Deluge, Corum Rath, make an appearance. He is an Atlantean eco-terrorist that wants to wage war with the surface world.

The character with the codename “Maren” description hints at a mixed-race female in her 30s or 40s. She is also described as “intelligent and formidable,” which would make her a perfect fit to play Dolphin. She was involved with the fight against Corum Rath and the Deluge. She has been a fan favorite ever since. GWW believes it might end up being Black Jack, Siren, or Bres.

The third breakdown is for a character dubbed “Rey.” DC is looking for a mixed-race female in her mid-late 20s. She is “tough and authoratiative.” I think could it could be Aquagirl, either Tula or Lorena Marquez. The description would fit Tula, as she is an Atlantean military officer. However, Lorena would be a better match for the role’s description. They may combine these characters into one.

Aquaman 2 will premiere on December 16th, 2022. James Wan set to return and helm the project. Jason Momoa will reprise his role alongside Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe will return as Mera and Vulko in the upcoming film.
