While we’ve gotten quite a few set photos from Netflix’s live-action One Piece project, it took quite some time until something leaked online for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The production started last year and has been moving forward at quite the pace. And now, @AvatarNews_ has shared the first set photos with that hint at it potentially being part of the Fire Nation given the architecture and its overall design. They don’t giveaway much and sadly we don’t have a shot of any of the actors on sets in their costumes, but it’s great to finally get a glimpse what they are working on.

It’ll be interesting if more set photos find their way online that offer a closer look at what exactly they are building. The fact they have an entire section of greenscreen highlights this might be the entrance to a palace of some kind. Perhaps the green field will also be replaced, and this is the location where we meet Zuko’s Blue Spirit disguise as he helps the team.
While there are always concerns with live-action adaptations, especially with a franchise that already had a critically panned adaptation, but Netflix is dedicated to these projects. the more they attempt it, the more they learn even if not everything will blow viewers away. Gaming has been seeing an upswing in better adaptations. So, here’s hoping.
Netflix has been quite busy with their live-action adaptations of classic animated and Anime projects. Most notably, they are currently in production on an adaptation of One Piece and Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Especially the latter has been in production since last year, as it’ll tackle one of the most populated Western animated series. Luckily, we can offer an update on the project which is currently starting to cast some key members of the Northern Water Tribe.
The series, which is currently in production under the working title Blue Dawn, is looking to cast recurring guest performers of Indigenous descent to appear in approximately two episodes. While the characters are being cast with code names, their descriptions give us hints on who exactly they are playing and confirm that they are key roles for the adaptation of the Sieg of the North storyline from Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s first season.
Let’s start off with a character by the name of “Chief Red Crow.” They are actively looking for an Indigenous actor in his 40s up to his 50s. As his name implies, he’s the leader of his tribe, and the description highlights that he’ll lead his people into a battle. He also has a daughter named “Grace” that is the most important thing to him, as he wants to make sure she is happy. The description matches the Northern Water Tribe’s Chief Arnook, especially with the mention of his daughter who is likely Princess Yue.
Yue’s code name is also once again mentioned with the character of “Henry.” Not only is the battle mentioned again, but he is highlighted as in love with Grace, while she has eyes for someone else. Henry isn’t too far away from the character of Hahn. He was a strong warrior that was arranged to marry Yue. The only difference is that the character was quite self-centered and egotistical in the original series, who was interested in Yue due to her being the chief’s daughter. He was constantly fighting Sokka, who is played by Ian Ousley, who is the “other” mentioned in the description.
The next major casting is for the role of “Brother Rain.” The character is the village’s “martial arts master” and the teacher of the village’s warriors. This description matches Pakku, who was the one to teach Aang (Gordon Cormier) how to master their waterbending techniques. There’s also a line that highlights he loves “adhering to tradition over progress” which would hint that Pakku’s storyline of only teaching male waterbenders will also have a role in the upcoming adaptation.
He’s not the only teacher in this village, as there’s also the character of “Ayana.” The description highlights her as a healer that teaches women of their tribe. The description perfectly matches Yugoda, who thought Katara (Kiawentiio) some healing techniques while she also continued to pursue Pakku to break his tradition to teach her. The castings are currently hinting that the Avatar Team’s visit to the Northern Water tribe will take place over approximately two of its eight-episode run, which is quite substantial and highlights we’ll get to see quite a bit of this cast.
According to Avatar News, the upcoming series will have a budget of $15M+ per episode. As the first season is set to run with around eight episodes, that would put it at around $120M+ total budget. They can’t share an exact number, but it would definitely put it on par with shows like The Mandalorian, which had around $100M for its eight-episode season. Though it eyeing beyond $120M, it’ll likely be closer to the budgets that Marvel Studios gives its Disney+ productions.
We still don’t know the exact budget for One Piece, but it’s also been speculated to be on a similar level. It was certainly higher than the one planned for Cowboy Bebop, which sadly ended up getting canceled. Netflix seems quite dedicated to these series and is planning high-budgets going in to build up a future season investment. Avatar: The Last Airbender is an extremely popular series and it makes sense they’d see the potential building upon the already existing fanbase. We’ll see if we get some teases from the ongoing production that hints at how they are tackling the adaptation moving forward.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has quite a few big years ahead. Netflix is working on a live-action series, Nickelodeon formed a new production studio that primarily focuses on the franchise, and it looks like a new rumor is hinting that some more games are also in some form of development. Avatar News, who have shared some insights on various projects in the past, has revealed that not one but four projects are currently in development.
The big news story is that one of the projects is hinted at as a “console RPG” but it’s uncertain what the gameplay style might end up being. Action RPGs are quite popular and would fit the universe, but it’s uncertain if they might go a similar route to Hogwarts Legacy, but they believe that it may include characters from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series.
The second project is an MMORPG. No more details could be shared, but it seems these projects have been in development for some time. These two projects joined one mystery title and the Square-Enix mobile game that was announced some time ago. If the rumor is to believe, we might get more details in the near future as they might be quite far into development at this point.
I have high hopes for an RPG in this universe, especially if you can master different types of bending. A high-budget action RPG would be a fitting game addition as you start to master the different techniques. They don’t know who might be involved with the projects, but there are definitely some studios that would offer a fantastic game based on the franchise. So, here’s hoping that announcement truly is just around the corner.
The Illuminerdi is reporting that the two will appear in the first season and has even shared the first character descriptions for both of them. The production is looking to cast an East Asian actress, who is 15 years old to play Mai. She is described as a “courteous daughter of a politician” who was sent to a private school for children of her political standing. Yet, she is also described as a “brooding teenager who finds her guarded and affluent life tedious.” Mai doesn’t wear her emotions on her sleeve and can often be seen as “quite deadpan.”
Netflix’s looking for the same age and heritage for the actress to play Ty Lee, who attends the same school as Mai. She is described as “cheerful, bubbly, and athletic.” Ty Lee is “an adept acrobat and gymnast” and we may see her actively move around while holding conversations with people, as she can never sit still. As such, she does her utmost to be liked by the people around her. She and Mai are both described as “recurring guest performers,” which hints that we’ll get more of them than initially expected.
No talent has yet to be announced for either role as the series continues production. They may get announced by the studio in a similar fashion to the three previous cast members. For now, we can only wait, as Avatar: The Last Airbender also doesn’t have a release date just yet.
The news of live-action adaptions gets met with very mixed reactions, as tackling a video game or animated series in this new format comes with many limitations. Fans are interested to see just how Netflix handles their live-action adaption of Avatar: The Last Airbender, especially when you consider the first attempt from 2010 getting panned by critics and fans alike. This time around, it’s going to be a series, which works in its favor to explore the original’s story while also exploring new paths to really make the series stand on its own.
Showrunner Albert Kim and Netflix revealed some new casting today, which will surely excite fans of the original. Elizabeth Yu has been announced as Azula, the ruthless princess of the Fire Nation and sister to Prince Zuko. Maria Zhang has been cast as Suki, leader of the Kyoshi warriors and love interest of Sokka. Yvonne Chapman will play Avatar Kyoshi, who preceded Aang and will likely help guide him on his journey. Finally, Casey Camp-Horinek will play Gran Gran, Sokka, and Katara’s grandmother.

Azula’s addition is a bit surprising and might be premature. Many fans of the show are probably scratching their heads, as Azula does not play a big role in Book One of the series and only briefly shows up in the background at the very end. This feels like a situation that Netflix could’ve kept quiet and saved for a season finale stinger or post-credit scene. Yet, there’s a good chance that the series might include her earlier on to introduce one of their biggest threats early.
It was quite a surprise when the creators of Avatar left Netflix’s live-action adaptation. While that project is still moving forward, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko founded an entire studio that exists to purely create more Avatar: The Last Airbender content moving forward. Well, it seems we may have gotten our first update on their approach for future projects. In a new listing for the newly found subsidiary of Nickelodeon Animation Studio, they are looking to cast a Pipeline TD with some insights into what the job requires. There is one particular line that stands out:
Develop and maintain an outstanding and customized look for the show that will require the integration of traditional 2D and CG elements
As Avatar News points out, who caught the news first, this style is quite similar to how Sony brought the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to life. It’s also become quite a popular design choice for projects, such as the recently released League of Legends series, Arcane. It offers the developers a way to create a unique art style to add an additional flair to their productions. Their previous two projects, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, were given a classic 2D animation style.
It’ll be interesting to see if they standardized the design for all their projects moving forward, or it’s mainly for a specific project. They want to explore the different eras that were only mentioned or teased in the previous two projects. It would be a clever idea to have a unique animation style that represents stories in a specific timeline. We’ll see what direction they are heading.
It looks like the turbulent developmnet hell surrounding Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has come to an end. Hot off the heels of casting Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai and Paul Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, the streaming service announced on their Twitter profile that they’ve officially entered production with a cute picture of the cast on the set. Sadly, they aren’t showing anything quite yet but it’s great to know that after its turbulent history, such as the creators existing the showing last year over creative differences, they are finally at a point for the series to kick-off filming.
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

The cast certailny looks excited and overall casting has been quite promising. It’s uncertain how long they might be in productiona nd when we can expect thes eries to release. Considering it’ll be effects heavy, we might have to wait for some time before we get too see their take on these iconic animated characters. Still, it’s good to finally get a confirmation that the project is moving forward and here’s hoping they’ll tease the cast in their costumes in the near future.
Avatar is one of the most beloved animated series of all time. It tells the story of Aang, the very last Airbender, as he travels the four nations with his companions and masters all four elemental bending techniques. The show returned to Netflix last year and brought back a wave of nostalgia for many, who soon remembered Netflix was in development on a live-action adaption, piquing the interest of many.
In the past couple of weeks, the adaption has begun adding to its cast, some known and some new to the scene. An addition that all have been waiting for is the role of Uncle Iroh, the uncle of Prince Zuko, and one of the series most important and loved characters. The Mandalorian and Kims Convenience Star Paul Sun-Hyung Lee has been officially cast in the role of Uncle Iroh. Along with that casting, Ken Leung has joined as Admiral Zhao with Lim Kay Siu cast as Monk Gyatso.
It’ll be interesting to see how the series adapts the first book and if it changes any backstories to better fit within the shorter episode run. The series has been pretty on the spot with its recent castings, and Lee as Iroh is quite a great addition.
Lee, Leung, and Siu join Gordon Cormier as Aang, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Albert Kim will serve as showrunner on the series following the departure of original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino.
Netflix just announced that actor Daniel Dae Kim is joining its cast for Avatar: The Last Airbender on Twitter. He will tackle the role of Fire Lord Ozai, the father of Zuko and the leader of the fire nation. We just recently heard the news that they were potentially looking to cast the rest of the nation of fire benders. So, it’s great that it didn’t take long for the confirmation of Kim’s addition to the cast in the iconic role.

Ozai was mostly kept in the shadows throughout the earliest seasons. So, we might spend a bit more time with the character if they already announce the casting now. There was also a rumor that they might already cast Azula for the series’ first season. Western adaptations tend to tease characters in adaptations much earlier. So, this casting might be our first hint that Azula might get an official casting in the near future as well. It’ll be interesting to see if it stretches out its adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender over multiple seasons rather than abiding by the same structure of the original.
