Leslie Grace Already Reached Out To Some of Her DCEU Co-Stars

Being in a shared universe of films and television series can be exciting when there’s just potential for many fan-favorite characters to interact and simply co-exist alongside each other. Over the past few years, the DC Extended Universe has confirmed many new characters like Blue Beetle, Supergirl, Static Shock, and Batgirl are set to join the shared universe. Yet, it seems like Batgirl herself has already got a jump on bringing those worlds together.

Variety recently spoke with Leslie Grace who gushed about all her excitement about the upcoming Batgirl solo film. The interviewer asked if she’d reached out to any other actors like Gal Gadot or Alicia Silverstone, Grace said she didn’t but did confirm she reached out to Sasha Calle and Xolo Mariduena.

I did reach out to Sasha Calle, who is Supergirl in “The Flash.” I’m hoping that we get to meet soon because we’re part of the new gen. I did reach out to Xolo Mariduena, our Blue Beetle. He is freaking awesome. I’m so happy for him.

It’s fun to see Grace so passionate about the character and the ones she could one day share the screen with. Many are already awaiting the team-up between Supergirl and Batgirl, for what will be yet another first for DC live-action.

Leslie Grace Talks ‘Batgirl’ Story and Teases Sequel

Fans are eager to see the debut of Leslie Grace as the DCEU’s Barbara Gordon as production on the HBO Max film wrapped just recently. The story is seemingly taking a lot of inspiration from the Batgirl: Year One storyline, one of the characters best and most popular stories detailing her early days and how she became the hero we love today. Yet, a new interview may hint that there could already be plans for Grace to reprise her role as Batgirl as it seems a sequel is already in the cards.

Variety recently caught up with Batgirl star Leslie Grace promoting her new brand partnership and quickly began talking about her upcoming debut as the titular hero. The interviewer jokingly asked Grace when she was getting to work on the sequel and her answer seems to hint that ideas for the potential film are already in the works.

We got to see this first one first. But there’s definitely some talks about what it could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.

    Leslie Grace

While we currently do not have a set release date for Batgirl we’re still getting excited for it. Barbara and her fathers relationship is something so important to the character and we can’t wait to see it explored in the film, especially with the return of J.K. Simmons.

  • Leslie Grace on Working With Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons in ‘Batgirl’

Leslie Grace on Working With Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons in ‘Batgirl’

The Flash is set to see the return of Michael Keaton into one of his most iconic roles, reprising Batman for the first time since Batman: Returns. For those that grew up with his version of the character, he is the Batman they grew up with. In Batgirl, he’ll also be joined by J.K. Simmons, reprising his Justice League role as Commissioner Gordon in what seems to be a new universe where they both co-exist.

The upcoming HBO Max film will see Leslie Grace take on the role of Barbara Gordon, as she becomes Gotham’s newest vigilante all on her own. Variety recently chatted with Grace in which she dished out how exciting it was to work with such legendary actors.

It was wild for everyone. Our directors were like two little kids. They’re legit Batman nerds openly. He’s Batman, man! I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really. And J.K. Simmons playing my dad. That’s my pop. I was so nervous because all I could hear in my head was his voice in “Whiplash.” Like what would he do and say if I didn’t get something right?. then we became the best of friends. And he just told me all his great stories of starting out and being a waiter and working in a pizza shop and trying to be an actor and doing theater.

    Leslie Grace

Working with such influential actors seems incredibly intimidating but it’s nice to see they were quite welcoming to Grace as she is a relative newcomer to acting. Batgirl currently has no set release date but had already wrapped filming.

  • Adil El Arbi Shares New Set Photo as ‘Batgirl’ Wraps Production

Adil El Arbi Shares New Set Photo as ‘Batgirl’ Wraps Production

Director Adil El Arbi has taken to his personal Instagram account to share that the HBO Max film Batgirl has wrapped up production. He alongside Billal Fallah took on the task to bring the famous super heroine to life, as Leslie Grace takes on the titular role. There are theories that it might not release until next year due to the delay of The Flash, which was set up to reintroduce Michael Keaton as Batman into the DC Extended Universe. Still, it’s great to see that they were able to wrap up production, and even shared a new look at Grace‘s costume.

Batgirl will see the young heroine face off against Firefly, a popular Batman villain that is known for his love of arson. We know very little about the plot or even if other villains may have a role of some kind. It’s even more surprising given how many photos have found their way online from the production, especially during its stay in Glasgow. Of course, there are probably enough interior shots that were done that way to avoid any potential leaks.

Grace will be joined by some veteran actors in their respective roles, most notably Michael Keaton that originally took on the role in Tim Burton‘s 1989 film. It’s uncertain if the film will build up his return through The Flash, but as it’s planned as a follow-up it can just skip to that part directly.

  • J.K. Simmons Teases Commissioner Gordon’s Expanded Role in ‘Batgirl’

J.K. Simmons Teases Commissioner Gordon’s Expanded Role in ‘Batgirl’

Actor J.K. Simmons is busy doing press for the Oscar-nominated film Being the Ricardos, for which he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination. The Academy Award-winning actor has been quite active in other projects recently, so it is no surprise that Simmons is getting plenty of questions about his various superhero projects, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Invincible, and the upcoming Batgirl HBO Max film.

While Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright played Gotham City’s Jim Gordon in the most recent live-action adaptation of the character in the recently released The Batman, Simmons took on the role of Commissioner Gordon in Justice League (2017) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). Unlike the latest iteration of the Dark Knight, these two films took place in the DCEU. So, it is not too surprising that Simmons is returning to play the character in the upcoming DCEU film, Batgirl. While Gordon had a limited role up to this point, Simmons told Discussing Film that there would be much more of Commissioner Gordon in Batgirl:

It’s much more than I got to do in my brief stint as Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder’s film. And really, it was fun because it was a completely different side of Commissioner Gordon. All that we saw in the little snippets of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in either the original or in Zack’s brilliant, expanded cut, it was just Commissioner Gordon being business-like and needing Batman’s help. In this film, I think I’m allowed to say since it does center on Batgirl, we see much more of Commissioner Gordon at home.

    J.K. Simmons

The actor went on the praise directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, noting:

Dude, those guys are crazy! I don’t know how they do it, and they had been shooting for four weeks or so by the time I joined. I met them via Zoom, and I was under the L track outside of my boxing gym in Chicago when we first spoke. They just bring such an energy. I’ve already compared them to a couple of like two-year-old Weimaraners, who have been pent up in the back of a station wagon all day and somebody just let them loose. The energy and the passion that they bring for making movies was a really fun energy to be around and then the fact that they also really know what they’re doing is is a nice part of the overall experience.

    J.K. Simmons

Along with his renewed role of J. Jonah Jameson in the latest Spider-Man trilogy, Simmons is playing beloved comic book characters in both the Marvel and DC universes. But he added, “I’m still not sure I understand all the various multiverse aspects of, you know, DC or Marvel.” It is unclear when Batgirl will release given the major delays in the DCEU’s upcoming theatrical schedule, though there’s an argument to be made that it would make the perfect 2023 holiday release.

  • Haley Lu Richardson on Losing Out on ‘Batgirl’

Haley Lu Richardson on Losing Out on ‘Batgirl’

Prior to Leslie Grace securing the role as Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, multiple young actresses were up for the role. One of them was Haley Lu Richardson, who has starred in titles such as Five Feet Apart and Split. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the young actress was the runner-up behind Grace for the role of Batgirl, but Richardson seems content with how things ultimately went down.

While promoting her latest film, After Yang, Richardson revealed that she received a note from J.K. Simmons after it was revealed she hadn’t gotten the role – something she feels made the whole thing worth it.

“It was exciting regardless, and I did get a nice little personal email from J.K. Simmons out of it, which was really nice. Getting the role would’ve been pretty cool, but I told myself that his email meant more to me than getting the role. So I tried, but I’m not Batgirl at the end of the day. I’m trying to think of what freaking superhero I can play now because aren’t they all done already? My dance skills, my flexibility and my athleticism need to be utilized.”

Although she didn’t get the role of Batgirl, Richardson is more than ready for Hollywood to cast her as a superhero. As she explains, she has dance skills, is flexible and is athletic. With her being a final contender, it seems likely she’ll eventually land her superhero role. After all, as we’ve seen in the past, Hollywood tends to revisit talent when it comes to casting new roles.

Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace, is now in production and is set to be an HBO Max exclusive film. No release date has been announced.

  • ‘Batgirl’ Would Make the Perfect 2023 Holiday Release

‘Batgirl’ Would Make the Perfect 2023 Holiday Release

In addition to producing live-action streaming series that are a part of the DCEU, Warner Bros has begun development on a few DC films that will be exclusive to the streaming service as well. Batgirl, which will introduce Barbara Gordon to the DCEU, is currently the first of what is presumed to be many HBO Max exclusive DC films, but recent shifts in the DC film release slate may have given it a window of opportunity for a theatrical release.

Substantial changes to many upcoming DC film release dates were part of a cascade begun by Black Adam being pushed back from its July release date to October 21st, 2022. Shazam: Fury of the Gods jumped forward on the calendar, taking the December 16th, 2022 slot previously held down by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, knocking the sequel into March of next year. Also moving into 2023 is The Flash, streaking to June 23rd, 2023, 7 months later than previously scheduled. Following the release of Blue Beetle on August 18th, 2023 there is nothing set moving forward, meaning Batgirl would have a perfect window to release in late 2023.

The Flash being delayed means Batgirl’s reported 2022 release is highly unlikely as the events of that film directly lead into the The Flash, reintroducing Keaton as the main Batman of the DC Extended universe. So what should Warner Brothers do with this new opportunity? Move Batgirl to a late 2023 release date and give the film the opportunity for a theatrical release instead of only putting it on HBO Max.

We’ve seen quite a bit from the set of Batgirl and we know the film is set during the holiday season with the set in Glasgow being covered with a ton of Christmas decorations. Instead of creating another Shazam! situation, where a film centered around one season is released in the opposite, the film could thrive with a a theatrical release during the 2023 holiday season.

Blue Beetle was originally set to be an HBO Max exclusive film but was moved to a theatrical release, so its possible for Batgirl to get the same treatment. Batgirl is an instantly recognizable character for many people and has had prominent roles in many DC projects. This move seems like a no-brainer for Warner Brothers, who could bring in more money with a more strategic release. It would also give the film additional time during production, as it always seemed a bit risky to shoot and release a film in the same year.

Batgirl’s release date is still unknown as production on the film continues in Glasgow. The film will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with Leslie Grace in the titular role. Alongside Grace will star J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser, Ivory Aquino, Jacob Scipio, and Rebecca Front.

  • Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Full Look at Firefly’s Costume

Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Full Look at Firefly’s Costume

Just recently, we got our first look at Brendan Fraser‘s costume as Firefly in HBO Max’s Batgirl film. Yet, it was missing quite a few parts. Luckily, it seems that they have finally assembled the full costume, as a new batch of leaked set photos has found their way online offering our best look yet at the iconic DC villain with his full gear on. What is interesting is that this design seems to skip his wings completely. As such, the arsonist might be grounded throughout the film.

The set photo does offer a great look, and the design has this really enticing steampunk aesthetic. There always is a chance that his costume may evolve throughout the film’s runtime, especially as he is seemingly the only villain that Batgirl might face in the film. The previous set of photos did tease her chasing down Firefly on a firetruck. So, perhaps he has a team working for him.

We don’t know if Firefly is a villain through and through, as there might be more to this story. He still seems like he has his arsonist tendencies from the comics, but they always change things in these projects. There’s still some time before the film finds its way unto HBO Max, and who knows what other set photos might find their way online that reveal more.

  • New ‘Batgirl’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Brendan Fraser’s Firefly Costume

New ‘Batgirl’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Brendan Fraser’s Firefly Costume

We’ve got our first look at Brendan Fraser on the set of Batgirl some time ago, but he was seemingly wearing civilian clothing while setting a building on fire. He certainly was staying true to the arsonist nature of his character during that shoot, but we’re all excited to see what his costume may look like. Luckily, a new set photo has found its way online which may have given us our first look at his Firefly costume for the HBO Max original film. It doesn’t reveal too much, especially as he is missing the iconic helmet, but it does seem like it’s taking inspiration from the comics with the giant fuel tank on his back and arm-mounted flamethrowers.

The biggest missing aspect is the wings, but they may be something they add in through post-production. He may have also lost them during a fight with Batgirl, which left him with just a few more elements of his costume. Of course, there is probably a simpler solution in the form of that they are currently taking a break in this set photo and that is why he isn’t wearing everything. Though, a new video does hint that him standing on the firetruck is on purpose and we can see Batgirl chasing him down.

Still, it’s great to finally get confirmation that he will wear the armor of some kind during his tenure as Firefly in the series. So far, he’s still the only confirmed villain to appear in the Batgirl film, but with a large rogue’s gallery-like Batman’s, you never know who else might show up. Given the story’s inspiration, it would be fun to see a live-action adaptation of Killer Moth, especially if they just have fun with the concept. When else would we get the chance to see him on screen?

  • Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Michael Keaton’s New Batman Suit

Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Best Look Yet at Michael Keaton’s New Batman Suit

A few days ago, we got the first look at Michael Keaton arriving on the set of Batgirl in his Batman costume. Sadly, it was a bit difficult to make out due to it being quite dark and far away. Luckily, it seems that some more photos have found their way online that offer a better look at his updated suit for the HBO Max film. You can check out the images provided by @JTsLeague right here:

The costume looks great and surprisingly similar to what he wore back in 1998. Even the headpiece seems to follow the same structure, but we won’t know for sure if he can finally tilt his neck until the film releases. There’s always the chance that the fabric being used can replicate the look but also offer some more functionality for Keaton while acting. It’s certainly no longer a rubber suit that needs to be ripped off of him so he can escape it. The biggest addition seems to be the shoulder pads that connect to the cape and the cowl. He did have some in the original but it’s way more pronounced this time around.

If you look closely, his logo has also been changed slightly. It seems closer to the one he had in the original film and not its sequel, which altered it slightly to be closer to the logo used on most of the promotional material. As we haven’t gotten a good look at his costume in The Flash, it’ll be interesting to see how much they may have changed or adapted between these films to keep his look fresh. No matter what, it looks great and hopefully we get an official look soon.
