DC’s ‘Black Adam’: Who is Isis?

Black Adam is quite possibly one of the most anticipated DC movies in development and is already living up to the hype with the addition of some of DC’s most iconic characters. With such a rich library to pick from, the film will introduce those from the Justice Society and the Black Marvel Family. The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change and Black Adam won’t let anything stand in between him and protecting the kingdom that he’s called home for thousands of years.

Black Adam Reportedly Recruits a Classic DCTV Character | CBR

Based on a character played by Joanna Cameron from the Shazam!/Isis Hour, Adrianna Tomaz, once a slave, was a gift to Black Adam from the infamous Intergang, a group of mercs powered up by stolen Apokolips technology. Adam quickly cut these mercenaries down and freed Adrianna who quickly became critical of the way Adam was running Kahndaq and how he could be doing things better. Adam quickly fell for Adrianna and the two would wed in a ceremony officiated by Shazam, with many prominent members of the Shazamly in attendance such as Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr, Uncle Dudley, and of course Tawky Tawny.

Adrianna was given the the amulet of Isis after being approved by now sitting wizard, Captain Marvel. The amulet once belonged to Queen Pharaoh Hatshepsut, a previous champion of the wizard. The amulet of Isis, once in hand and the words “I am Isis” are spoken, allowed he or she who wore it to be instilled with the powers of the goddess Isis: speed, strength, wisdom, flight, and the ability to control nature. Together Adam and Adrianna traveled throughout the Middle East freeing the enslaved and searching for Adrianna’s lost brother, Amon, after the two were separated in enslavement. Amon would soon become bestowed with powers similar to Adam and Tomaz, donning the name Osiris.

A much more watered down version of the character named Zari, played by Tala Ashe, has become a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow wielding a similar amulet that allows her to control wind, the character is a hacker from the future who joined the legends to save her brother. Sarah Shahi has been cast in Black Adam and will play the powerful love interest herself.

  • RUMOR: Marwan Kenzari Eyed to Play Sabbac in “Black Adam”

RUMOR: Marwan Kenzari Eyed to Play Sabbac in “Black Adam”

While Black Adam may have been removed from the studio’s release slate, nothing seems to be slowing down its production. Recently, we got the news of Egyptian goddess Isis being added to the film. There are also rumors of popular Justice Society of America villain Eclipso making an appearance. With just a few known character spots left to fill, many have begun to wonder who may fill the antagonist role in the movie about one of DC’s most powerful antagonists.

It’s being reported that WB has their eyes on Marwan Kenzari to play the films main antagonist Sabbac. The villain had three different comic iterations over the years, but the film will focus on Ishmael Gregor. He is the most well-known identity of Sabbac for the few that read his short run. He was a Russian immigrant, who made his way to New York, where he becomes a mob boss. Ishmael initiates a demonic ritual in which he sacrifices many innocent people to gain the powers of Sabbac. This is actually an acronym for the six that gives him his power, Satan, Aym, Belial, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, and Crateis. This is quite similar to how Shazam#s name in the comic derives from six immortal elders. Those were Solmon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.

It seems highly likely that they could be combining some elements from the film. It seems they are changing his powers though, as Illuminerdi pointed out that there will be a crown of Sabbac. This may help them keep a PG rating instead of going into the satanistic origins of the characters abilities. The casting of Kenzari also moves away from the characters’ Russian background. He is described as a descendent of a “murdered pharaoh” so they could connect him to Adam’s past.

Black Adam currently has no release date, set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and will star Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, and Sarah Shahis

  • RUMOR: ‘Black Adam’ to Feature Eclipso

RUMOR: ‘Black Adam’ to Feature Eclipso

DC FanDome gave us some major reveals. Yet, somehow Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam stood out the most. They gave him an entirely unique set design that matches the tone of the upcoming film. We saw animated artwork showcasing the character’s origin and even the tease of the Justice Society of America. It was a great time to be a fan of the famous DC character. They even seem to be sticking closely to the comic roots, as we will explore Black Adam’s life before he would gain his powers. At one point, he will be imprisoned for his actions in what seems to be an alternative dimension. Well, it looks like The Direct may have gotten their hands on some interesting info regarding that backstory.

According to their sources, Black Adam will include the comic character Eclipso. The character is closely tied as a recurring antagonist of the Justice Society of America. His soul is bound to the Heart of Darkness, which was featured in the teaser video. One can see it floating next to Teth in a short sequence. So, there is a good chance that Eclipso will act as the antagonist of the film with the JSA’s introduction and be the reason he escapes his prison. So far, we don’t know who will be the main antagonist throughout the film. Black Adam will most likely be an anti-villain, so perhaps he will be used by Eclipso in exchange for freeing him. It could make for some interesting drama as he realizes the people he is fighting aren’t actually his enemies.

  • DC Film Slate Hit With More Delays

DC Film Slate Hit With More Delays

Once again the pandemic has hit the movie industry hard, this time affecting Warner Brothers highly anticipated and packed release slate. This isn’t  the first round of delays the studio has faced since theaters shutdown in mid-March, being one of the first to release a film PVOD.

On Monday it was announced that Matt Reeves’ The Batman would once again be facing another delay, moving from its October 1st, 2021 release date to March 4th, 2022. After shutting down production in March, the film had only just resumed filming this September before facing yet another day when their star Robert Pattinson, contracted COVID-19. The film has resumed filming in the UK and film more scenes outside in Chicago in the coming weeks.

The Batman delay was felt across the multiverse, reaching those in the main DCEU continuity with The FlashBlack Adam, and Shazam: Fury of The Gods all having their release dates reworked due to the uncertain times the industry currently faces. Andy Muschietti’s The Flash has shifted from its June 3rd, 2022 release date to November 4th, 2022, it’s become hard to keep track of all the delays this film has faced so hopefully this is the last. Shazam: Fury of The Gods will move from its November 4th, release date to June 2nd, 2023. It’s unclear if these release date delays will affect the films current production schedules, with Shazam it’s become and apparent issue that the cast is quickly aging and these delays could make it much more of an issue for the film. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam faced probably the worst fate, having initially been dated to release on December 22nd, 2021, has now been removed from the release calendar and currently remains in limbo.

DC films such as The Suicide Squad  and Wonder Woman 1984 remain in their current release dates but it isn’t hard to imagine that these films will also suffer the same fate. A delay for the next Wonder Woman film is almost certain, seeing as a Dune has moved from its December 18th, 2020 release date to October 1st, 2021, a date that belonged to The Batman before today’s announcements.

  • Aldis Hodge Eyed to Play Hawkman In ‘Black Adam’

Aldis Hodge Eyed to Play Hawkman In ‘Black Adam’

Black Adam was probably the biggest highlight of this year’s first-ever DC FanDome. Dwayne Johnson showed off the artwork of his character Teth in action. It then introduced viewers to the supporting cast which will consist of a few key members of the Justice Society of America. Among them was non-other than Hawkman. So far, only Atom Smasher was officially cast. We were just waiting to find out who would take on the iconic role of the other members, especially Hawkman. Looks like The Wrap got their hands on the casting, as Leverage star Aldis Hodge is being eyed for the role. Hodge has quite an extensive filmography with Hidden Figures and Straight Outta Compton. He even started his career with a role in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

We got a first look at the character’s design in the FanDome Justice Society of America teaser.

Carter Hall, who dons the Hawkman persona, is a reincarnation of the Egyptian prince Khufu. His Egyptian ties would also connect him to that of Black Adam. There also is another version of the character from the planet Thanagar. Katar Hol acts as a space police officer. They have switched between the different versions often over time, so it has become a bit of a mess which version is which. Black Adam’s ties to Egypt would make Carter Hall the most likely incarnation to be adapted.

  • FanDome: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Concept Art Teases His Vengeful Conquest

FanDome: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Concept Art Teases His Vengeful Conquest

Dwayne Johnson has been a powerhouse in Hollywood. When he announced that he would end up playing the titular role in an upcoming Black Adam, we couldn’t wait to get our first look. Luckily, DC FanDome has scheduled an entire panel for the upcoming project. Just before the event started, we even got our first look at the logo. That is naturally not all that got revealed. The event started off with an amazing animated showcase of artwork that tells the story of the iconic anti-hero. The animation was an amazing way to retell the story.

Here are some of the screengrabs that tease just how ruthless he will be in his conquest against those that wronged him.

  • FanDome: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Logo Leaks Ahead of Panel

FanDome: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Logo Leaks Ahead of Panel

DC FanDome can’t avoid the early leaks. There is still some time to go before the event starts. Some of the merch has already leaked online a bit ahead of schedule. We just recently covered our first look at Task Force X for the upcoming The Suicide Squad film. Now, we also have our first look at the upcoming Black Adam logo. We just recently got a reveal of Dwayne Johnson in costume so it was just a question of time before we see the logo.

I won’t lie, it is kind of bland. The color scheme chosen is perfect for the characters design. Even the font seems to pay tribute to the logo design for Shazam!. It makes sense to connect these shows visually as they will crossover at one point. Still, the logo that really popped in the last film. This is quite different from the tease that Dwayne Johnson shared on Instagram yesterday.

They could’ve made the logo pop out by having the Lightning bolt being black. Johnson‘s teaser made it stand out a bit more but it would’ve been cool to flip the lightning as a reaction to the previous film’s version. It would highlight that he isn’t as kind as Shazam if it had a darker color. Plus, they could make the Black Adam stand out with strong golden lettering. There is always the chance this logo will change as they enter production. It could also just be something they prepared for merch.  Even the first logo for the original Suicide Squad film changed quite a bit once the marketing started.

  • ‘BLACK ADAM’ Eyeing Alexander Skarsgard for Hawkman

‘BLACK ADAM’ Eyeing Alexander Skarsgard for Hawkman

DC FanDome will bring us quite a lot of news on upcoming DC projects. Among the schedule reveals, we got confirmation that Black Adam will finally get some spotlight. As such, we might finally get more details on the upcoming project. We have some ideas of what the Dwayne Johnson film might have in store for us. Just a few days ago, our very own Charles Muprhy had discussed rumbling surrounding the film. In it, he highlights that they might be narrowing down who will play the iconic Hawkman. Now, Illuminerdi revealed that they are currently eyeing none other than Alexander Skarsgard to play the character.

The Emmy-winner would be a great choice. With an inevitable clash between Hawkman and Black Adam, it makes sense to cast someone who could stand toe-to-toe with Johnson. Illuminerdi does point out that they are also considering Sam Heughan, who played Jamie Fraser in Outlander for the role. Still, Skarsgard is the current frontrunner for Warner Bros. and it only depends on his interest in joining the film.

It will be interesting if they can finalize a deal in time for the upcoming FanDome event. Hawkman a.k.a. Carter Hall is such an interesting character to explore. He has strong ties to Egypt due to the reincarnation cycle, so they can explore Black Adam’s relationship with him before being faced with his inevitable rebirth. With all the news recently coming out, I cannot wait to see what DC FanDome has in store for us all.

  • ‘BLACK ADAM’ Surprises in Store for DC FanDome

‘BLACK ADAM’ Surprises in Store for DC FanDome

The full schedule for next Saturday’s DC FanDome was revealed today and on first glance it truly looks to be a spectacular event, almost too full of great panels, that will give fans a big boost as the COVID-19 pandemic presses on. Of all the scheduled events, the one that caught my eye will be taking place in the Hall of Heroes at 6:00 PM EST when Dwayne Johnson is set to appear in a Black Adam panel with some surprises tossed in. What kind of surprises might be in store? Let the speculation begin.

    Landing a Hawkman

    Hawkman | DC

The most obvious and most anticipated bunch of surprises would come from adding to the cast. As of now, only the film’s star, Johnson, and Noah Centineo, set to play JSA member Atom Smasher, have been announced. That means there are plenty of roles left to be filled but it’s the role of Carter Hall/Hawkman that’s going to make or break this movie. The studio has been searching for a while now but rumors swirled recently that they had narrowed down their search. We know they want someone physically imposing who could appear to be able to tussle with the Rock (let’s be honest, you’re going to have one hell of a time finding that guy given Dwayne’s commitment to fitness) but also someone with a timeless quality to them. Hard to do all that, but you could see someone the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Joel Kinnaman (who, apparently, is a hot super hero commodity right now) or Alexander Skarsgard pop up in the panel, turning up the hype on this one even more.

    The Villain

Ibac (disambiguation) | DC Database | Fandom

While the film is certainly going to see Black Adam and Hawkman come to blows, it’s unlikely that Hawkman would be the film’s true antagonist meaning there’s one big piece of the puzzle missing. I’ve heard rumblings for a while now about what type of villain the studio wants and, unsurprisingly, it seems it’ll be someone who can match Teth-Adam’s longevity. At first this sounds a lot like Vandal Savage and he would be a great pick but there’s another character whose recent retcon might make him THE perfect bad guy. The New 52 gave a new story to a character named Ibac and that story could tie right into this film. Originally, Ibac was just a guy named Stanley Printwhistle who, like Billy Batson, could say a name and be imbued with magical powers. The retcon turned him into a barbarian warlord, Ibac the First, who conquered and enslaved the people of Khandaq, killing Teth-Adam’s family in the process. Black Adam had his vengeance on Ibac only to later come to blows with a descendant. With some careful crafting, Black Adam could tell the tale of the barbarian Ibac and bring the original character back to life as well granting him the magical powers of IBAC (based on some of history’s greatest warlords), making him a better match for Black Adam.

There are certain to be more cast announcements and surprises, but these two really stand out among the potential crowd given how they’ll define the public’s perception of the film going into production. What else are you hoping to hear next week?
