‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Spends 5th Weekend at No. 1

With no other new releases this weekend, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has taken the top spot at the box office yet again. The weekend is heading towards the second lowest box office weekend of the year with an estimated $37.2 million. Depending on how Saturday’s numbers go, the box office could end up being the lowest box office of the year.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is now in its fifth week, is estimated to take in $11 million after earning $2.8 million on Friday. Along with retaining the top spot, the film officially crossed $400 million at the domestic box office and is currently sitting at $401.55 million. That puts it ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after 29 days of release; that film, of course, earned $411 million domestically and $955.77 million at the worldwide box office.

Wakanda Forever should finally lose the top spot next weekend when 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water finally hits theaters. The film is expected to open to $200 million domestically, although that estimate could change – especially given early reactions have praised the long-awaited sequel.

Michael B. Jordan Discusses What It Took to Keep Killmonger’s Return in ‘Wakanda Forever’ a Surprise

A debate about which character should become the next Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arose among fans following the death of franchise star Chadwick Boseman. Some fans believed Marvel Studios should follow the route established in the comics and have Shuri assume the mantle. Other fans, however, had other ideas. Nakia, M’Baku and the villain of Black Panther, Killmonger, all made the lists of fans around the globe. Killmonger, who was played in the first film by Michael B. Jordan, was an interesting choice given the fact that he was both canonically deceased and made terrible choices during his reign as King and Black Panther of Wakanda. Ultimately, writer and director Ryan Coogler made the decision to have Shuri become the protector of Wakanda and take on Namor. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t room for Jordan’s Killmonger in the film.

Upon recreating the heart-shaped herb and moving into the Ancestral Plane where she believed she would be greeted by her brother, Letitia Wright’s Shuri was shockingly greeted by her cousin, the villainous Killmonger. The return of the character to the Ancestral Plane was the subject of rumor and speculation long before the film’s release, but Jordan never gave it away. In fact, according to the star, he knew that working with Marvel Studios meant he “had to lie to everybody” to keep the appearance a secret.

While discussing his return in an interview with Extra, Jordan indicated that lying and denying is just part of the deal when working with Marvel and that includes lying to his family.

I had to lie to my family over here. I had to lie to everybody out here… I had to just keep it under wraps… When you’re dealing with Marvel and stuff like that, you know the routine. So you just gotta, you know, deny, deny, deny, deny, deny until the end of it, yeah.

    Michael B. Jordan

Marvel Studios and its actors are, of course, famously disingenuous when it comes to discussing upcoming projects. The “Marvel way” of lying and misleading fans rather than using the actors’ presence in the project is certainly a curious way to build hype, but Marvel has maintained its intense level of secrecy for well over a decade, at times to the dismay of stars such as Zoë Saldaña, who compared working with the studio to being part of a cult in terms of holding on to secrets. Hopefully, Jordan’s family forgives him in time for the holidays!

  • ‘Black Panther 2’ Remains at #1 for 4th Weekend in a Row, Passes $700M Worldwide

‘Black Panther 2’ Remains at #1 for 4th Weekend in a Row, Passes $700M Worldwide

With little competition, it seems that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had no problem keeping its hold on the No. 1 spot with another $17.6M. That makes it the fourth weekend in a row; the first to do so since the release of Sony and Marvel Studios’ record-breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home. It did have some competition this weekend as David Harbour‘s Violent Night, a story about John Wick if he was Santa Clause, managed to pull in $13.3M over its premiere weekend, ahead of early projections.

Wakanda Forever now stands at $394M domestic and will definitely pass $400M and has a good chance at pulling in $450M by the end of its run. If the film will manage to hold that top spot in the next weekend depends on the return of Top Gun: Maverick which has been the only film so far to really outperform any expectation during 2022’s release. For those wondering if this means people are tired of superhero films: it had a pull with a long-dormant audience with its increase of older movie goers that may have generally been cautious ever since the pandemic hit and simply held a nostalgia for Tom Cruise and Top Gun. Good word-of-mouth did the rest.

Worldwide, Black Panther has already passed the $700M mark and proudly stands at $733M. It’s foreign tally of $339M is quite interesting as normally Marvel productions are bigger internationally than domestically though the split was similar with the original Black Panther release. The film is unlikely to pass the original’s run and a billion does seem far-fetched, more dependent on how long Marvel Studios can keep it in theaters at this point. Still, in the later $800M area seems possible but there’s some uncertainty if it can pull through with $900M; though Doctor Strange did surprise earlier this year as well.

Strange World is continuing to bomb as it is struggling quite a bit with only $4.9M taking in over the weekend and standing at a depressing $25.5M. With $42.3M worldwide, the film is likely to lose Disney more than $100M at this rate. Also to make a point regarding Top Gun earlier, Jonathan Majors and Adam Powell‘s Devotion didn’t quite become the same hit like Top Gun did earlier this year while trying to bandwagon off of its success with a similar style only set during the Korean War. It still did decently with a 12-day domestic of $13.8M, pulling in $2.8M this weekend.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Crosses $300 Million Domestically

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Crosses $300 Million Domestically

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever prepares to enter its third weekend, the superhero flick has managed to achieve another big box office milestone. After earning $9.5 million at the box office on Tuesday, the movie has officially surpassed the $300 million mark stateside. The film’s domestic haul is currently sitting at $303.7 million. It has now become the seventh film to surpass $300 million domestically this year, joining the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Batman and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Heading into the weekend, Wakanda Forever is currently projected to pull in another $40 million, which should keep it atop the box office. The only real competition the film faces is from another Disney title, Strange World, which is expected to pull in around $30 million in its opening weekend. That’s on the lower side for Strange World, as Disney’s Encanto did $40.5 million at the same time last year.

  • ‘Wakanda Forever’ Faces Harsh Friday Drop, But Still Set to Dominate the Weekend

‘Wakanda Forever’ Faces Harsh Friday Drop, But Still Set to Dominate the Weekend

It definitely looks like Marvel Studios’ projects are quite frontloaded in their release, as even Black Panther Wakanda Forever with an A CinemaScore faced a harsh Friday-to-Friday drop. It pulled in between $17.9M and stands at a chance of making up to $70M. It’s definitely a harsh 79% drop but not the worst that Marvel Studios has seen this year, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dropped by 81% on its second Friday. It’s even lower than Thor: Love and Thunder‘s 80% and not too far from Black Adam’s 72%. Perhaps it’s a general genre trend in a market with less to offer.

As Deadline points out, there’s a chance it’ll make up to $70M and could stand at a 65% drop for its second weekend total. At that rate, it’s only around 3% lagging behind Multiverse of Madness, which is massive considering it was a prime summer release in May. Plus, Thanksgiving and Black Friday are around the corner which could give it a massive boost with very little competition. So, it does seem safe to assume it’ll hold the top spot going into its third weekend.

The Black Panther sequel already passed $400M worldwide and could be moving similarly to the previous entry. For those wondering if it’ll pass the billion-dollar mark: it doesn’t seem like a sure thing but if it holds after this weekend there’s still a chance it could outdo the Doctor Strange sequel. Even if some want to call this “the end of Marvel” once again, the films are still financially doing better than most and after much-calling fatigue since even after Avengers: Endgame‘s release. It’s the kind of fatigue many others would dream about.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ May Not Release on Disney+ Within the Usual Release Window

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ May Not Release on Disney+ Within the Usual Release Window

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has made quite the splash at the international box office and is a strong contender to potentially pass a billion with some powerful word-of-mouth pushing the project forward. There’s, however, one part that could end up dragging its growth down in the form of the current Disney plan setting each new release to be available on Disney+ within 45 days. Yet, it seems that Wakanda Forever may move away from that current trend.

While reporting the current box office trends, Deadline shares some details on what we can expect from its theatrical run. They point out that the film isn’t set to release ahead of the holidays, which has been a common move for Disney to get some more momentum for its subscriber growth ahead of the holiday season. Encanto dropped quite quickly on the platform and it seems they have the same plan with Stranger World, which is set to release on November 23rd. Even Eternals found its way shortly after the year started in January.

Yet, they are opting to potentially not do the same with Wakanda Forever. As such, they may be starting to move away from the 45-day release window that has been set and adapt from film to film. Top Gun: Maverick proved that a longer release window can truly carry a film passed the billion and with some strong word-of-mouth, it would be a shame if Disney got in the way of its own success. As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if they generally start moving away from that and give these films more time to breathe in theaters.

  • ‘Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett Initially “Objected” the Decision to [SPOILER]

‘Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett Initially “Objected” the Decision to [SPOILER]

If you haven’t seen Black Panther: Wakanda Forever yet, only continue at your own risk. The following article contains spoilers on major plot points of the sequel.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended Phase 4 by further exploring the concept of grief, but with some real-world thrown into the mix. Director Ryan Coogler and his crew used the film to work through their own challenges after the loss of Chadwick Boseman, which leads to a powerful film reflecting back on the legacy he leaves. In the middle of it all, Angela Bassett offered a powerful performance as Queen Ramonda. In an interview with IndieWire, she highlighted what it was like taking on the role and returning as the character and how Coogler supported the cast throughout production.

He’s extremely clear on the story and what he’s doing, but the way he carries himself around the cast and the crew. It’s so collaborative. He’s so self-effacing. That impostor syndrome that we’re feeling or whatever, he will just say it out loud. ‘I don’t know about these words. Are you OK with them?’ And he really invites you to have your say, be a part, which is wonderful. He doesn’t straightjacket you.

    Angela Bassett

Of course, the big move in this film was her death at the hands of Tenoch Huerta‘s Namor. A powerplay to showcase his power before Wakanda and especially Letitia Wright‘s Shuri. In a story already fighting through the loss of a character, it seemed harsh to add one more to the list, but Bassett shared how the Black Panther director convinced her of taking the story down this route.

I objected. Yeah, I was like, ‘Ryan, what are you doing? Why? You will rue the day! You will rue the demise of [Ramonda]. People are gonna be so upset. He was like, ‘Angela, I know, I know, but look, to die is not really to die in this world. It doesn’t really have to mean that.’

    Angela Bassett

It definitely was shocking and added to the emotional gut punch that was Wakanda Forever. Shuri’s character has gone through a lot in this film. So, it just added even more weight to the events that transpired. Still, it almost seems like we could expect Bassett to potentially return in the MCU’s future if that is how Coogler sold her on the story decision.

  • The Sunday Paper — November 13, 2022

    The Sunday Paper — November 13, 2022

    wakanda forever score

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuted this weekend to high acclaim and box office success. Fans are now finally able to witness the ambitious, emotional, and impressive cinematic feat for themselves after years of real-world grief and production difficulties. Despite the success, earlier this week director Ryan Coogler revealed that a Black Panther 3 might not be such a sure thing—at least with him at the helm. And for those tracking potential Avengers: Secret Wars directors, Coogler says he has had no conversations about the job.

Fans of Black Panther and its sequel should be happy to hear that Marvel Studios has confirmed that there are multiple Disney+ projects in the works based on Wakanda. According to Marvel Studios EP Nate Moore, some of the series in mind would involve existing characters, such as the Okoye-centric project that’s been in development for some time, while others would focus on characters “that would be completely new.”

Some of the week’s biggest news involved everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Though it hasn’t been officially announced, the buzz around Sony and Marvel Studios reaching a new deal to continue their collaborative efforts to co-produce Spider-Man films has been at an all-time high this week. The deal, should it be reached, would allow Marvel Studios to get to work on developing new Spidey films with Sony and for them to negotiate a deal with star Tom Holland that would allow him to appear in non-Spidey films.

But other Spider-Man projects have been in the news as well. Daniel Kaluuya was revealed to be voicing Spider-Punk in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and there are rumors that the animated film will feature Spider-Men from major franchises, such as Tom Holland’s, Tobey Maguire’s, and Andrew Garfield’s heroes. For those interested in the never-made Maguire universe Spider-Man 4, we learned this week that Angelina Jolie almost played a villain in the film, and new details emerged about the origin and death of the Vulture in it.

In Deadpool 3 news: in an interview with Sirius XM’s Stars, Ryan Reynolds explained that he, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy are “up to our necks in prep,” that the film is still being written, and that he will be wrapped up in production on it for the next two years. The actor then added that shooting on the film, which he called “the easy part”, is expected to take place “just before Summer.” Interestingly, new rumors suggest that Owen Wilson’s Mobius will appear in the film as well as the 2005 Fantastic Four team. Perhaps Chris Evans’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not be as Steve Rogers after all. The Marvel Studios Fantastic Four film in development is rumored to be eyeing a January 2024 production start. Shawn Levy fans will be excited that the director will direct a Star Wars film after he’s done with Deadpool 3.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos casting and character news continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. While the debate on the subject seemed a bit silly, Joe Locke’s role in the upcoming Disney+ series is seeming confirmed as Wiccan at this point. The show added Sasheer Zamata and Eric André to its cast, and a new report may have revealed that Morgan Le Fay will be the main villain of Coven of Chaos.

Daredevil: Born Again is one of three Disney Plus streaming series set to film in the first half of 2023, joining Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Wonder Man. Early word had the Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio-led Daredevil series headed to New York City for production, returning to the familiar locations fans grew accustomed to over 3 seasons of the Netflix series. Production is expected to last nearly all of 2023, beginning in February and wrapping in December.

Indiana Jones is set to make a big comeback with the upcoming fifth film starring Harrison Ford in the iconic role once again. Yet, it seems that Disney is not interested in leaving it with just that single project. According to a new report by Variety, it seems they are also hoping to develop a Disney+ series based on the iconic archaeologist’s globe-trotting adventures. They don’t have a writer or showrunner in place. So, it’s not a definite project at the moment but definitely something they are looking into.

The John Wick franchise is continuing to grow, as not only are we getting a TV spinoff that explores the early days of the iconic hotel chain but also a female-led spinoff only known as Ballerina as of now. It’s unclear if this new cinematic franchise will receive an original naming to tie it all together, but it does seem like the franchise’s iconic star, Keanu Reeves, is set to join the production of the upcoming spinoff.

    lilo and stitch live action

Lastly, a very heartbreaking exclusive about the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie revealed that the iconic character Cobra Bubbles will be replaced. Of course, news that one of the greatest Disney animated films of all time would be receiving the latest live-action treatment was distressing enough. Still, the fact that Agent Bubbles was not deemed worthy of making the cut is absolutely absurd and a crushing blow to any reasonable-minded person. Perhaps the only post-1990s 2D Disney animated films to actually become a classic, Lilo & Stitch is a journey that spans space, friendship, and family. The film boasts an amazing soundtrack as well, and it is unclear how a live-action film could ever do it justice. Bubbles was a pillar of the original film, serving as the social worker constantly threatening to separate Lilo and her sister, Nani, as Nani does her best as a teenage older sister and pseudo-single-parent after the two’s parents die tragically as per Disney tradition. It is near impossible to see how a remake that forsakes Bubbles could be the Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride that the beloved Lilo & Stitch embodies. Disney apparently forgot the film’s most famous quote: “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.”

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is Now November’s Biggest Domestic Opening Weekend of All Time

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is Now November’s Biggest Domestic Opening Weekend of All Time

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has dominated the box office, as the film will pull in $180M over the weekend. Cinemas have been waiting for a project to finally give them a boost, especially after Black Adam was a more mellow premiere, and it has arrived. Not only that, the film has now taken the record of the highest November opening from Hunger Games. Catching Fire, which stood at $158M since 2013. The film will also end its global release at around $330M.

It’s a sigh of relief for Marvel Studios, as there were a lot of troubles facing this production. It had to film during COVID, Letitia Wright suffered an injury that halted production, and it lost its main star when Chadwick Boseman suddenly passed away forcing the production into a new direction. It also can’t rely on an international bo office with markets like China, Russia, and Ukraine not available for understandable reasons. It’ll likely not pass the original’s $1.4B worldwide release but it could have a chance at inching its way towards a billion if its A CinemaScore gives it some much-needed word-of-mouth.

The film stands as the second biggest opening for Marvel Studios this year, as it passed Thor: Love and Thunder but is behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which goes against early projection. Though these two films had the summer market to play with and the Doctor Strange sequel was heavily frontloaded. If Wakanda Forever doesn’t face a harsh drop in its second weekend, especially with it not sharing the B+ CinemaScore, it could have a chance to potentially surpass that film’s box office in the long run. Though it might be safer to say it’ll reach at least 800M and grow from there. Still, this is the fourth-highest superhero movie opening and it doesn’t seem like Marvel Studios is slowing down any second. Of course, the second weekend is the only one that could really tell if that’ll be the case.

  • From Page to Screen: Namora, the Sea Queen

From Page to Screen: Namora, the Sea Queen

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in theaters, and when audiences get their chance, they’ll also meet all the new characters introduced within it. While much of the discussion surrounding the film has been focused on Namor and Riri Williams, there are also a handful of other Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts quietly included in the highly-anticipated sequel. Among the less-talked-about is Mabel Cadena‘s Namora, the cousin of Tenoch Huerta‘s undersea monarch and a character with rich history in Marvel’s comics. Of course, Namora doesn’t get quite as much time to shine onscreen as her more-popular relative, but she does manage to leave a mark worth exploring. As such, Murphy’s Multiverse will handle the duties of dissecting her origins from some of America’s earliest funny pages and comparing them to what fans see in Wakanda Forever. It’s humble work, but somebody has to do it.

Comics – Namora, the Sea Queen

Namora’s early days of existence are a bit wonky, considering where she would end up decades later. When she debuted in 1947’s Marvel Mystery Comics #82, nearly 20 years after the first appearance of Namor, she was not portrayed as being related to Namor at all. In fact, there was even some romantic chemistry established between the eventual cousins. Fortunately, this was retconned and cleared up in later books, which instead revealed a familial history between the two. Originally named Aquaria Nautica Neptunia, the future “Sea Queen” was, much like Namor, born a hybrid mutant to an Atlantean father and a human mother. Biologically the cousin of the great Prince Namor, the young Aquaria soon had her name changed to reflect her heritage. Namora, based on the Atlantean term for “Avenging Daughter”, after Namor, the Atlantean term for “Avenging Son.” As is apparently common in her family, Namora also had pink skin, which she inherited from her mother in the same way Namor inherited his human appearance from his father. Although, unlike Namor, Namora’s skin only faded to pink from blue once she reached adulthood.

Namora spent most of her early years as Namor’s close friend and adventure companion, after earning his respect as the only person in Atlantis who could match his strength and wit. However, where Namor confined himself to the oceans and maintained his loyalty to Atlantis, Namora was often more intrigued by her human origins and eventually made the move out of Atlantis and onto the surface world. After years of fighting strictly at the side of her royal cousin, Namora finally went on a journey of her own, taking a more heroic stance than Namor and saving lives across the globe. This period would see Namora on a wide variety of escapades that included battling fascist forces, teaming with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, joining Ulysses Bloodstone’s fabled Monster Hunters, and even finding love with two different men – Talan, an honorable Atlantean, and, believe it or not, the famed Russian hunter Sergei Kravinoff.

Eventually, Namora would become involved in a conflict that would cost her life. After a fiasco with Talan and the pressures of marriage left her feeling unwelcome in Atlantis, Namora relocated to the neighboring Lemuria, an underwater home for an ancient race of Deviants, with a newborn daughter (actually a secret clone named Namorita) in tow. There, she found herself targeted by Llyra, a mutant inhabitant of Lemuria who saw Namora as competition. Llyra would eventually poison Namora, sealing her corpse in a coffin, where it would lay for decades before being discovered by Jimmy Woo and the Agents of Atlas. That group manage to resurrect Namora in modern times, where she becomes a member of their team, discovers he “daughter” has taken her place on Earth for the last several years, and becomes involved in many major events that define the time period, such as World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, and the following Dark Reign. She even took action against her cousin during the Secret Empire era, leading a rebellion against his tyrannical rule and ultimately overthrowing him.

    MCU – Namora

Namora’s presence in Wakanda Forever is a far cry from her storied history in Marvel lore, but it’s likely only the beginning for the character in the MCU. Her backstory as Namor’s cousin is not explored or elaborated on, but the fact the film maintains her name as Namora instead of Aquaria is a good sign the familial relation is still there. Much like the early source material, Namora appears to be a bit younger than Namor, and functions primarily as his second-in-command of Talokan. She seems to be his confidant and closest ally, and the only one able to question him to his face. Unlike her comic counterpart, Namora is not a mutant and is featured with blue skin when active on the surface world. She cannot breathe surface air without a mask, and it’s unclear if she is as powerful as Namor, furthering her from the abilities she possesses in the books. There is also a line in which Namora mentions always having wanted to fight by Namor’s side, implying that they did not spend their youth adventuring in the way they had in Marvel’s comic universe.

The end of the film hints that Namora could have a larger role to play in the future of Talokan, but for now, she’s mostly just a formidable warrior and a trusted member of Talokan’s hierarchy. Alongside Attuma, she is often sent to do the work unfit for Namor himself. She is involved with the initial attacks on the United States government and Wakanda and is a key player in the taking of Shuri and Riri Williams from Massachusetts to Talokan. While in the comics she is more open to the surface world, the MCU version of Namora is far more nationalistic and is unable to understand why, in the end, Namor chooses to trust Wakanda and rescind his attack on land-dwellers. Luckily for fans of the character, there is plenty of room for her to grow, and Wakanda Forever serves as an excellent base for Namora in the MCU.
