    Marvel Studios’ Daredevil’ Series Finds Its New Showrunner and Directors

    It’s been a wild ride for Disney+ and Marvel Studios. Now that the WGA regulations are in place based on the new deal, the studio’s head writer concept has been scrapped to return to a more traditional showrunner method. The Punisher’s Dario Scardapane is seemingly taking over as showrunner for the Daredevil: Born Again series (uncertain if that name will remain) and is joined by the directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who are making quite a name for themselves with their work on the Loki Season 2 episodes that are getting quite a bit of social media attention.

    The series was filmed in New York but after it was paused due to the strikes, it seemed that Marvel Studios wasn’t quite satisfied with what they got and original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord left the project. Given the character’s history with the Netflix series considered one of the best adaptations, it’s no surprise that they are trying to make sure that this one truly sticks the landing. Benson and Moorhead are attached to direct the new episodes to finish out the first season but no one knows how much they will overhaul the entire show.

    Marvel Studios’ upcoming take on Daredevil is continuing to add some great talent, as they have seemingly added Clark Johnson not only as a director but also to play the role of “Cherry.” While it’s not confirmed by Marvel, Deadline shares that it is who they have heard he is playing, and he’s set to also direct two episodes of Marvel Studios’ longest-running Disney+ series. He joins the new take on the Netflix characters once again played by Charlie Cox with new showrunners Matt Corman and Chris Ord working on the project.

    While the Deadline article spells the name “Cherry”, there’s a chance he might tackle the role of corrupt politician Randolph Cherryh, who appeared in Daredevil #177. The character was notable for having a direct tie to Kingpin, who is also going to return with Vincent D’Onforio reprising his role from Hawkeye and the upcoming Echo. It seems very unlikely that this will be a gender-bent version of Cherry Blossom, who served as a Hand assassin in the comics.

    Clark Johnson has made quite an imprint on TV, as he directed the pilot episode of The Shield which got him an Emmy nomination. He’s also been involved with shows like Love & Death, Mayor of Kingstown, Luke Cage, The Good Fight, The Wire, and many more. He also acted in a variety of projects, such as playing Gus Haynes in The Wire, which might be one of his most iconic roles. He also appears in Evil as Father Amara.

    ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Adds ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Star

    Perfectly timed, Daredevil: Born Again starts production in New York City we are getting some more news on what we can expect from the quasi-legacy series. Not only do we have a director now, but also have a rather shocking recast of Sandrine Holt taking over the role of Vanessa Fisk. It marks the first recasting from the original Daredevil Netflix series even though Jon Bernthal is returning in his iconic role.

    Still, we have one new addition to the cast with an Agents of SHIELD actor Michael Gaston. He wasn’t a major player in the Marvel series with a single episode appearance but this marks the second in his career. The actor also worked on shows like Blindspot, Mayor of Kingstown, Chicago P.D., and many more.

    He joins a cast that consists of Margarita Levieva, the before-mentioned Sandrine Holt, Michael Gandolfini, Jon Bernthal, Vincent D’Onofrio, and its main star, Charlie Cox. It’ll be interesting to see just how big the cast grows as 18 episodes open up many opportunities to introduce a wide variety of characters.

    We still don’t know how far they’ll dive into an overarching plotline or mostly keep it as a week-to-week story. Fisk’s involvement does hint that something will be brewing throughout the entire season, but with 18 episodes they might want to have more individual storylines that flesh out the world we’re about to return to. Only time will tell, as we also don’t know if Foggy or Karen will return.

    Kevin Feige Says ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Will Have More Standalone Episodes

    It’s no secret that one of Netflix’s biggest selling points is the binge format it popularized wherein audiences get to watch full seasons of their favorite show in one weekend instead of waiting for it spread over several weeks. The format has allowed filmmakers behind the shows to get creative with their pacing and storytelling.

    For the Marvel-Netflix shows, this meant packaging their content in a prestige serialized format where seasons functioned as lengthy movies where cliffhangers bookended episodes. It didn’t always work out for them as criticism over pacing and episode count was constantly lobbied whenever a season would premiere. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige addressed Marvel Studios’ desire to do the opposite of what Marvel-Netflix did saying:

    Yes. I mean, cliffhangers are great, and I like watching a show where you should go to bed, but you see the cliffhanger and you just have to watch the next episode. You certainly want to keep people engaged. But I’m a big Star Trek fan, and I still find it soothing to watch an episode of Next Gen with a beginning and an end. So, I think we’re going to keep experimenting with that going forward.

    When the conversation inevitably shifts toward Daredevil: Born Again, Feige shares his excitement in experimenting with the aforementioned episodic standalone format of storytelling.

    It’s Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, and they’re amazing actors and storytellers in their own right. That’s sort of what I was talking about with the fun of episodic television: That’s really where we’re experimenting with that, with Daredevil in particular.

    Given the whopping 18-episode length of Born Again, it makes complete sense for Marvel Studios to pace out the season in a reasonable manner. If Andor was any indication of how future Disney+ shows can handle longer seasons (by clustering storylines into 2-3 episodes), Born Again should be in a good spot.

    REPORT: ‘Daredevil’s Disney+ Series Adds ‘Arrowverse’ Writers and Former Lawyers

    It looks like Marvel Studios is pushing forward quickly, as they are ramping up on one of their most ambitious Disney+ series yet. Daredevil: Born Again will be the longest Disney+ series with 18 episodes and their first attempt at living in the shadow of a previous adaptation with returning actors. Now, we may have a better idea of what they may have planned for the series with som newly revealed writers.

    Daredevil‘s Disney+ series may have added some former lawyers to its cast with David Feige, who was a public defender in New York City but also went on to work on series like Raising the Bar or The Firm. Former attorney Thomas Wong also joins after working on Bull and Michael Weatherly. Queens prosecutor Zachary Reiter has also joined, who worked with Feige on The Firm as well as on Law & Order: Organized Crime

    She-Hulk, Attorney at Law also relied on former lawyer Charles Soule to offer some insight into how to bring the legal comedy to life. That isn’t all, as the report also points to former Arrowverse writers having joined the production with Jill Blankenship and Grainne Godfree. Blankenship was a showrunner on Naomi but also worked on a variety of Arrow episodes while Godfree was involved with The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

    The addition of Arrow writers is definitely interesting, as this extensive writers’ room may hint at a very grounded and legal-heavy drama. It would match why the show has up to 18 episodes. They join showrunners Matt Corman and Chris Ord, who have the challenging task of bringing back the iconic franchise while adding their own spin to it.

    New Rumor Indicates Another Major Netflix Character is Set to Join the MCU

    First Charlie Cox. Then Vincent D’Onofrio. Now, a new rumor has another major player from Netflix’s Defendersverse series set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to KC Walsh, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, whose rumored appearance in She-Hulk was nothing more than speculation, was set to join the cast of the Disney Plus streaming series, Daredevil: Born Again, but was unable to make the commitment because of a scheduling conflict. In her place, Marvel Studios has allegedly decided to bring Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle on instead.

    Though Walsh didn’t mention Bernthal by name, the rumor mill has been active around the actor’s arrival in the MCU for months. Dating back to SDCC ’22, fans were buzzing about the possibility of Bernthal’s Frank Castle showing up in an upcoming MCU project, with some rumors even pointing to a Punisher series being in the works. While no further mention has been made of that possibility, the rumors continue to pile up about Castle’s appearance in Daredevil: Born Again. In early August, fellow Netflix star Rosario Dawson added to the buzz during an interview at the C2E2 2022 when she told the crowd she had recently learned “the Punisher was happening again.” Dawson later recanted her statement saying “I can’t be trusted”, but the rumors haven’t died down.

    Bernthal first played Frank Castle in 2016 during the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil and his portrayal of the character was an instant hit with fans. He went on to star as the character over 2 13-episode seasons of The Punisher before the show was non-renewed in 2019. With the live-action rights to the characters reverting back to Marvel Studios and Cox’s appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and D’Onofrio’s appearance in Hawkeye, it’s always seemed to be a matter of when other characters from the Defendersverse would arrive in the MCU, no if. With Daredevil: Born Again not filming until 2023 and not streaming until 2024, fans may have to wait quite some time to find out exactly when that when is.

    As Vincent D’Onofrio remained on stage following the Echo portion of Marvel Studios’ panel at D23 Expo, he told Kevin Feige that he wanted to talk about “his show.” D’Onofrio’s remarks drew a roar from the crowd, but that roar turned deafening when Charlie Cox walked on stage asking if D’Onofrio meant he wanted to talk about Cox’s show. When the crowd settled, the pair of stars, along with Feige, went on to briefly tease Daredevil: Born Again, the 18-episode streaming series that will put Cox back in the driver’s seat of his own series since the 2018 cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil.

    After a year of wondering if word of his return to the dual roles of Matt Murdock and Daredevil was true, Cox’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home generated a great deal of excitement about the future of the beloved character. Shorty after, rumors of his now confirmed appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law began to swirl, followed by rumors of an appearance in Echo and then, at July’s SDCC ’22, Feige made the thrilling announcement that the studio was going ahead with Daredevil: Born Again. What started with the smallest of cameo appearances for Cox has now grown into a project the size of which Marvel Studios has never attempted on Disney Plus. Cox will be a busy man for the next couple of years and while at D23, he talked about joining the MCU and he was incredibly excited.

    This feels like we’re just getting started here. This is all overwhelming. This feels like we got invited to the party we always wanted to be invited to. To be starting on this journey again. To have the body of work that we have behind us, but we take some of that and the experiences we’ve had and now tell more stories again…it’s like a dream come true.

    Cox’s enthusiasm for the role seems to match the enthusiasm fans have for him in it. Rumors persist that his character’s appearance in Echo will not only dovetail into Daredevil: Born Again, but also that he may not be the only Marvel Netflix character to appear, meaning he might not be the only one invited to the party…

    Daredevil is set to appear in an upcoming episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, streaming on Disney Plus.

    Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Won’t Be A Continuation of Previous Series

    Charlie Cox made his first major public appearance last night since returning as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home when Kevin Feige presented Daredevil: Born Again to the rabid public in D23. Cox’s return was rapturous and was only made better standing next to Vincent D’Onofrio, who appeared for the Echo presentation.

    There has been much debate on whether Daredevil: Born Again serves as a fresh start for the franchise, as the title suggests, or rather a continuation of where the Netflix series ended. During the press line, Cox revealed that Feige had iterated to him that the show would be different and be about “new stories and new ideas.” Cox went on to affirm this.

    It is a Season 1. It is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing. Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.

    Fans looking to see what happens next following the defeat of Kingpin and Bullseye will be disappointed by this quote but the decision to do a whole new thing isn’t surprising. As beloved as the cast of the show is, Feige may not share the same feelings about how certain plot points developed. At the most, Born Again may likely end up being a soft reboot where elements such as casting are continued and loose ends are completely ignored. Much like any new comic run where a new creative team takes over, Born Again’s situation is essentially the same thing.
