  • Marvel Revives Ms. Marvel as a Mutant, Disney+ Star Writing the New Comic

Marvel Revives Ms. Marvel as a Mutant, Disney+ Star Writing the New Comic

It’s safe to say that the “death” of Ms. Marvel was probably one of the most controversial decisions by Marvel Comics. Yet, it seems they had some big moves happening while the special issue Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel remains a sour spot for some, there was a pretty expected strategy. Just as we were mourning the fallen hero, we already have an update on what we can expect from her comic’s future.

The big reveal is that Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan in the Disney+ series, is actually co-writing the project alongside Sabir Pirzada, who worked on the series. Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham are providing the art with Sara Pichelli involved with the comics’ main covers. As part of the reveal, Vellani reveals what it was like moving on from writing fan fiction to the real thing.

This was way scarier than joining the MCU for me. Those projects feel like they live in their own dimension, so I guess I can separate myself easier. But you can hold a comic book! I’ve never written anything before in my entire life, but I have read many comics, so I just wrote what I would want to read. I was given a very professional tool to write what is essentially my own fan fiction.

Check out the cover for the new series.

As the cover unveils, Ms. Marvel is moving on from her Inhuman story towards embracing a new identity. The first Muslim superhero for Marvel is now a mutant, just as it was revealed in the Disney+ series. For those still mad at this revelation, it was the creator’s original intention to have her a mutant but ended up as an Inhuman due to the story that was written at the time. Of course, we’ll see just how long Kamala is going to stick around with the X-Men before once again embracing her Captain Marvel roots, which will be the focus of the upcoming The Marvels film.

  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Talks for ‘Wonder Man’

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Talks for ‘Wonder Man’

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star in the Wonder Man series for Disney+ and Marvel Studios. The news was revealed on Monday by Deadline with the outlet reporting that the actor is officially in talks for the titular role. News of the actor’s casting comes after he was reported as being up for the role in the past few weeks.

Abdul-Mateen, who currently portrays DC’s Black Manta in the Aquaman films has also starred in HBO’s Watchmen, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Nia DaCosta‘s Candyman, and The Matrix Resurrections where he played Morpheus. He’s currently coming off the Suzan Lori Parks play Topdog/Underdog where he’s earned rave reviews for his performance. He’ll join the previously announced Ben Kingsley in Wonder Man, who is set to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery.

Wonder Man hails from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, who is executive producing the project, and Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who will serve as the head writer on the series. While not yet set in stone, Cretton, who is also on board Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, could potentially direct an episode or more, too.

As of note, Wonder Man does not have a release date on Disney+.

  • RUMOR: Marvel Studios Developing a ‘Vision Quest’ Series

RUMOR: Marvel Studios Developing a ‘Vision Quest’ Series

As Marvel Studios readies for the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the studio seems to be looking ahead to its future. A new rumor from Jeff Sneider suggests that Marvel Studios is developing a Vision Quest series. He dropped the news while on The Hot Mic with John Rocha. Sneider also revealed that Marvel Studios is set to open a writers’ room for the series beginning next week.

“I’m told that next week, Marvel will be opening a writers’ room for a Vision show titled ‘Vision Quest’.”

    Sneider

When asked whether or not the series will follow the comic storyline of the same name, Sneider seemed uncertain. It could simply be another case of Marvel Studios using a title from the comics for a loose adaptation.

Earlier this year, we explored how Vision Quest could be the perfect follow-up to one of Marvel Studios’ best television shows, WandaVision. That series offered up the perfect jumping off point, following White Vision as he came to accept his true identity. The original comics storyline hailed from John Byrne and introduced a kidnapped and memory-wiped version of the Synthezoid.

As of now, a head writer/showrunner hasn’t been announced for Vision Quest.

Disney+ Nabs ‘Doctor Who’ Streaming Rights

Disney+ has landed the streaming rights for the BBC series, Doctor Who, in a landmark deal. The news was revealed on Tuesday by the upcoming Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. Under the new deal, Disney+ will exclusively stream all upcoming seasons of the show outside of the U.K. and Ireland, where they will remain with the BBC. Russell T. Davies, who returns as showrunner for the forthcoming season, expressed excitement over the new deal.

“I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

    Davies

Regarding the new deal, Alisa Bowen, the president of Disney+, called it a great opportunity to bring the beloved series to a new generation. “We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world,” she said. “The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalog of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling.”

Doctor Who first launched in 1963 and ran until 1989. The classic series was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston taking on the role of the ninth Doctor with Russell T Davies on board as showrunner. The revival launched a new generation of Doctor Who fans and brought with it the first female Doctor thanks to Jodie Whittaker‘s thirteenth Doctor.

The first episodes of Doctor Who to air under the new partnership are expected to debut in November 2023, which will coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary. Gatwa will take on the role of the Doctor next, following the short return of David Tennant as the Doctor for three specials.

They join Walker Scobell, in the titular role, alongside Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries as Grover and Annabeth, respectively.

Copeland, best known for his work as Edge in the WWE, will be playing Ares, the Greek god of war. He is described as being a handsomely arrogant god that loves to be an agent of chaos. Suzanne Cryer, likely best known for her leading role in Silicon Valley, will guest star as Echidna, the Mother of Monsters. • ‘She-Hulk’ Director Says Jessica Jones “Would Be a Good Addition” to the Series

‘She-Hulk’ Director Says Jessica Jones “Would Be a Good Addition” to the Series

Less than a week away, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has generated plenty of discussion and speculation relating to its comedic tone and inclusion of major characters like Bruce Banner, Daredevil, Wong, and Emil Blonksy. Those significant inclusions are known already from the show’s trailers and promotional materials. Even though the series is essentially the starting point for the freshman live-action MCU character, She-Hulk is setting a stage for an experience that could keep surprising fans.

Of course, many fans want to know if other known and beloved characters will also make an appearance in She-Hulk at some point. Given the series’ structure as an episodic half-hour legal comedy show, it seems likely that surprise cameos could be in store. Now, series director Kat Coiro has added to some of the speculation.

In an interview with Tara Hitchcock via YouTube, Coiro responded to a question about what characters she—regardless of whether they will actually appear in the series or not—would have liked to include in the show. While teasing an unnamed character that is already in the show, the director also mentions that Jessica Jones would fit in well in She-Hulk:

Well, put that out there! Let’s have Thor come visit She-Hulk! I think the person who I think most organically fits into the world is in the show. I actually think Jessica Jones would be a good addition.

The “person [who Coiro thinks] most organically fits into the world” may very well be Daredevil, whose alter ego Matt Murdock is also a lawyer. But name-dropping Jessica is interesting considering the newfound relative likelihood that characters, like Daredevil, from the Marvel Netflix universe will make their returns to the MCU.

Coiro also emphasized what other She-Hulk creatives have said about the series’ cameos. While some existing characters like Wong and Daredevil have been portrayed in a more serious light, the upcoming comedy series reframes them for the show. Specifically, the director stated:

Every single existing MCU character who came into this show had to make the adjustment from being in things that are much more serious to being in something that is tonally more outrageous. And they’re all such wonderful actors and all so adept at adjusting, but it was definitely fun to watch that transition and fun to watch them go ‘Oh, it’s ok for me to do this?’ The biggest question they all ask me is ‘Am I going too far?’ And I would say ‘Absolutely not! Go further!

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuts on Disney+ on August 18, 2022.

  • SWCA: First Footage Description for ‘The Bad Batch’ Season 2

SWCA: First Footage Description for ‘The Bad Batch’ Season 2

Star Wars Celebration is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any highlights on the last day. After quite a bit of silence on the second season of The Bad Batch, they finally showed off some of it during its panel at the event. Our very own Hunter Radesi was lucky enough to get in and share some of the footage he got to witness and share what was shown off. The following footage description is from the show’s premiere episode.

Some time has seemingly gone by since we last spent time with the Clone Troopers. Omega has aged and they have a new look as well. Their armor is now grey with some orange thrown in. Omega is playing at the beach while Tech reprimands her to focus on her studies. Suddenly, the other members are being chased by a giant crab monster. While they try to shoot at it, Omega gets caught between it and their ship. She shoots a few perfect shots with her bow and seemingly takes the beast down.

  • Potential Guest Appearances in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Potential Guest Appearances in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Star Wars fans have been looking forward to Lucasfilm’s latest Star Wars streaming series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series takes place in the years that exist after the Prequels are complete, but before the Original Trilogy begins. This is ground that really hasn’t been deeply explored by other Star Wars properties.

The Star Wars content that has premiered on Disney+ has been lauded for taking the material in new directions while also tying into the existing canon, and some of the biggest moments in these shows have been cameos and Easter eggs. The inclusion of characters from animated series getting their live-action debuts, such as Bo-Katan and Cad Bane, has particularly driven fan interest.

Obviously, the return of Hayden Christensen as Vader was confirmed before the series and fans got their first glimpse of the character at the end of Part II, so we’re going to speculate about who else we can expect to see interact with Old Ben under the twin suns of Tatooine over the next four episodes.

    Snips

One of the most anticipated cameos is the return of Rosario Dawson in the role of Ahsoka Tano. These characters are deeply connected in the Clone Wars animated series, and her introduction in The Mandalorian was so popular that Ahsoka got her own spin-off, which started production recently. The series will be set approximately 10 years after the conclusion of Revenge of the Sith, and according to her time in Star Wars Rebels she was establishing pockets of resistance as the agent codenamed Fulcrum.

Fans who only know her from live-action might not know that Tano never actually became a Jedi because she left the order. There are still gaps to fill in on her journey from padawan to resistance leader to Luke’s assistant in this year’s The Book of Boba Fett. She is very likely to appear in Kenobi.

    Lothal Rebels

Obi-Wan Kenobi will take place before the animated Rebels series in the official chronology, so for any characters that make an appearance, it would technically be a prequel to those adventures.

Kanan Jarrus: spent most of this period hiding his force powers from the Empire, so very unlikely to appear here.

Ezra Bridger: he was just a child in Rebels, and lived on Lothal before that show ran, so also unlikely.

Garazeb Orrelios: Zeb was reeling from the loss of his people, the Lasat. His story doesn’t have many connections to the themes that surround Obi-Wan, so also unlikely.

Hera Syndulla: Hera’s family was involved in resisting the Empire on Ryloth when they suffered tremendous personal loss. She was the leader of the Spectre cell of the resistance and was one who had contact with Ahsoka/Fulcrum, so this Twi’lek is a strong candidate for an appearance. Hopefully, she brings along C1-10P/Chopper.

Sabine Wren: Sabine is an intriguing candidate given the popularity of Mandalorians in the live-action series. Sabine is an explosives expert and artist and spent her time before Rebels as a bounty hunter with her friend Ketsu Onyo. They alluded to a darker time in her past, and it would be fun to see her with a little bit of a sharper edge. It would also open the door to her return for the Ahsoka series, as they teamed up in Rebels.

    Clones

Part II gave us a brief glimpse of one clone, but the return of others from the Clone Wars series is a possibility. It could complicate things because Temuera Morrison would likely be required to play them, and it might confuse casual viewers to see him back in action in a role other than Boba Fett, but the clone he played in Part II was barely recognizable as Morrison, other than the distinct voice. Captain Rex is a great candidate for a return, as he is seen in Rebels with Wolffe and Gregor as defectors.

    Scum and Villainy

Odds are good we will get another banger from the Max Rebo band in a cantina scene. The cantinas are the heart of Tatooine, and often host cameos in the background. Favorite bounty hunters Greedo and Boba Fett, or more obscure ones like Cad Bane and Dengar would be appropriate for brief interactions. Perhaps we will get a glimpse of Jabba on a litter. Scoring Donald Glover for Lando would be a coup but seems unlikely.

A fun option here would be Hondo Ohnaka, a pirate who knows Obi-Wan from the Clone Wars days and goes on to play a role in Rebels. He is an unpredictable mix of soft-hearted and cutthroat and could serve as an ally Kenobi can never quite trust.

    The Dark Side

There are some fun candidates amongst those who wield the Dark Side of the Force and could serve as a lead-up to Obi-Wan’s reunion with Anakin. Kenobi has a past with Sith Assassin Asajj Ventress, and though he did not meet her end on-screen, she has a pretty conclusive ending in a 2015 novel. It would be interesting to see if the current leadership feels bound by their other media.

Rebels established that there were Sith devotees who were tasked with hunting the Jedi who evaded the infamous Order 66. These Inquisitors, such as Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister, had some tremendous action scenes and would bring pressure on Obi-Wan to keep his location secret.

The most intriguing option is Darth Maul. He is established in the Clone Wars as being alive at this time, and although we know he has to survive to appear in Rebels, given the way they parted at the end of The Phantom Menace their reaction would surely be explosive.

  • ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Gets New D+ Premiere Date, 2 Episode Debut

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Gets New D+ Premiere Date, 2 Episode Debut

It was almost two months ago that Lucasfilm announced that the Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series would be premiering on May 25, 2022. This would mean missing out on May 4, Star Wars Day, while still landing the show’s premiere on a relevant Star Wars date, as the original Star Wars feature film premiered on May 25, 1977.

This has now changed as Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor, announced that the premiere has been delayed a couple of days to the 27th, probably hinting at a weekly Friday release for the Deborah Chow directed series. But perhaps the biggest piece of news is that audiences worldwide will be greeted with a two-episode premiere, something Disney+ has done quite a few times, especially with Marvel Studios releases. While not being a huge shift, it allows Disney to circumvent the situation of having live-action series from two of its biggest franchises releasing on the same day. Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel has a June 8 premiere date meaning that had Kenobi kept its Wednesday slot, by its third week Kamala Khan would be joining the Wednesday party and eventually hurting both series’ numbers.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will mark the return of the aforementioned McGregor to the role, as well as see the return of both Hayden Christensen and Joel Edgerton to roles last played in Revenge of the Sith.
