Warner Bros. Discovery Cancels DC FanDome for 2022

Warner Bros. Discovery will not be hosting a DC FanDome event for DC fans this year. The news comes courtesy of WBD, with the newly merged studio announcing it is excited to engage with fans at numerous comic cons around the world, but that FanDome is not happening.

“With the return of in person events, Warner Bros. Discovery is excited to be able to engage with our fans live at numerous comic-cons around the world and will not be scheduling DC FanDome for 2022.”

    Warner Bros. Discovery

DC FanDome first launched in 2020 thanks in part to COVID-19 making conventions impossible. The event ended up being an eight-hour live stream that saw some of DC’s biggest talent take part in the virtual event for fans to promote upcoming shows and films. While last year’s FanDome wasn’t as exciting, fans were hoping to see the event return this year.

The decision to cancel FanDome for this year, however, shouldn’t be too surprising. Ahead of its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July, it was revealed Warner Bros. Discovery was seeking to cut costs by limiting the properties it brought to the event. In the past, Warner Bros. has been known to go all out with massive screens and talent signings for fans. This year, however, outside of small presentations on both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there wasn’t much in store for DC fans at SDCC. New York Comic Con is coming up next month and, per Comicbook.com, the studio is excepted to have some sort of presence at the convention. As it stands, though, it’s unclear whether those plans include a booth or a studio presence.

With a much larger release slate set for next year, perhaps DC FanDome will make a comeback. For now, fans can hope for some news from New York Comic Con in October.

  • FanDome: Two-Part ‘Batman: the Long Halloween’ Animated Film In Development

FanDome: Two-Part ‘Batman: the Long Halloween’ Animated Film In Development

Just yesterday, we got our first look at the upcoming The Batman. Well, looks like that wasn’t the only Batman-centric news we were going to get out of DC FanDome. In an IGN exclusive panel for the animated film Superman: Man of Tomorrow it was revealed that four DC Universe animated films are slated for 2021 These include the already revealed Batman: Soul of Dragon and an original story titled Justice Society: World War II.

With all this news, there is actaully one larger reveal. The iconic Batman mini-series The Long Halloween will be adapted as a two-part animated feature. The first part is slated to release next summer with the final part slated for Fall 2022. This will be the first adaptation of the 13-issue comic run that explored the story of Batman hunting down the Holiday Killer. It also isn’t the first time they’ve adapted an iconic Batman mini-series in two-parts. Last time they did this, it was the The Dark Knight Returns adaptation.

The Long Halloween story is also considered to be a big inspiration for Matt Reeves upcoming film. It will be interesting to see how they adapt this story. Hopefully they won’t add anything like they did with The Killing Joke. Also, the comic run had a very unique style that made the noir-inspired story stand out. It isn’t something that can be easily replicated and brought to life through animation. There is a chance they might streamline it to some degree. I am curious how they will approach this project and will keep an eye for that first trailer next year.

FanDome: ‘THE BATMAN’ is Vengeance in First Teaser

This was always going to be the big news of the day and despite the big build up, it didn’t disappoint. Matt Reeves take on the story of the Dark Knight looks to be unlike anything we’ve seen to this point and darker than expected.

Reeves teased that the film, which finds Robert Pattinson’s Batman in “Year Two”, will serve as the origin stories for villains like The Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman while giving us new iterations of classic Batman supporting characters Alfred and Jim Gordon. The film takes place at a time where the legend of Batman is growing in a corrupt Gotham City and the citizens have yet to learn his true intentions. Reeves’ passion and enthusiasm for the project was evident while discussing the film and this version of Batman. Have a look at what is an incredibly noir take on the world’s greatest detective!

  • FanDome: ‘SUICIDE SQUAD’ Game Confirmed as Part of Arkham Series

We just recently ran the first trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It confirmed that Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark will be playable in the game. The first trailer didn’t really quite giveaway how the gameplay would be. The game can be played alone or with three friends. It seems that you are also able to switch between the characters while you are tacking down the enemies.

There were also some questions about its placement within the universes. Just today, we found out that WB Games Montreal Gotham Knights won’t be part of the already established Arkham games. As such, it was unsure if this game is part of the Arkham series or rather the new storyline created by Montreal’s project.

Well, Rocksteady’s Sefton Hill confirmed that this game will take place within the “Arkhamverse”. This is a rather interesting choice as that would mean we explore a world where Batman has died. Now, the Justice League seemed to have gone rogue and a group of misfits are forced to take them down. The major story will be why the Justice League have gone crazy and I cannot wait to find out.

The event started off with an amazing animated showcase of artwork that tells the story of the iconic anti-hero. The animation was an amazing way to retell the story.

Here are some of the screengrabs that tease just how ruthless he will be in his conquest against those that wronged him.

  • FanDome: ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Confirmed As 4-Part Mini-Series

So, we were all wondering what exactly Zack Snyder’s Justice League would be released as. There were theories that we would be getting a two to three-hour film. Some were hinting at it being a mini-series that re-tells his version in parts. This way, he could explore more of the original concept that was planned. Well, in the DC FanDome panel, he confirmed that it will be a four-part mini-series with each episode consisting of an hour.

This is huge news as it opens up the question if we will get all four parts at the same time. Zack Snyder did confirm that they will interlink to form one cohesive story. They might have split it up to give Snyder more time to explore and people can watch it in parts to not be overwhelmed by the length. No matter how they release his version of the story, it will be great to see his original vision see the light of day.

  • FanDome: ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Trailer Released in High-Quality

Just earlier today, the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League or the Snyder Cut got leaked online. It gave us our first look at Darkseid and even teased the original design of Steppenwolf. It got us pumped for what would be revealed at the upcoming panel and a look at the trailer in higher resolution. DC FanDome has given us quite a lot of goodies for the ever-expanding DC multiverse. It is exciting to think we will see the original vision of the Justice League on HBO Max. Finally, the trailer got released in higher quality and you can check it out right here.

  • FanDome: Static Shock Movie In Development

FanDome: Static Shock Movie In Development

With many announcements and surprises flooding out of Fandome, many wondered what the planned secret DC Comics panel would focus on. It was revealed to be a relaunch of the Milestone comic brand. This comic line would focus once again on a roster of under-represented superheroes from the DC Universe. This is great after it had been dormant for more than two decades. In the panel, one fan asked the question if any of these characters would return to the silver screen.

In response to this question, it was revealed by Reginald Hudlin that there had been serious talks with Warner Brothers and Jim Lee. They wanted to get fan-favorite Static Shock a potential theatrical release. There are also talks with WB Animation to bring these iconic Milestone characters to life. Static Shock will also get a new comic line that starts in 2021 alongside the return of Milestone.

Fans are gonna have to wait a little bit longer for more information. It still seems to be in the early stages of discussions. They also seem to be considering bringing it bak as an animated feature, especially as the original Static Shock voice actor Phil LaMarr was part of the panel.

  • FanDome: Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ Started Casting & Will Explore Modern Times

FanDome: Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ Started Casting & Will Explore Modern Times

DC FanDome has explored all sides of the DC multiverse. We are still only halfway through for the day but quite a bit has been teased or revealed. Everything has gotten some attention and among all the panels was also one dedicated to The Sandman audio drama. With all the delays, it slipped through the cracks that Netflix was still hard at work at their incarnation of the iconic deity. Creator Neil Gaiman revealed that after everything got delayed due to the pandemic, it is slowly picking up again.

“Right now as the universal pause button is starting to come off, we’re starting to cast again. I’m getting these inspiring and wonderful emails with production designs with places that I’d only ever seen in the comics before, now being rendered in 3D, and I’m being asked to comment on it. That’s amazing.”

It’s great to see that production has started again. Gaiman has been deeply involved with both incarnations. So, it ensures that we will see something very close to what the original comic series has set-up. One detail he did reveal is that the Netflix adaptation would take place in modern times. So, we might get surprised by some changes after all to the iconic series.

Just today, we finally got the reveal for WB Games Montreal’s upcoming Batman game Gotham Knights. Surprisingly, it does not feature the iconic caped crusader as the main protagonist. You actually get to play as a variety of members of the Bat-family including Batwoman, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood. They teased that the game would feature co-op, so you’ll get to play alongside friends throughout the teased story. At the end of the trailer, they even confirmed that the Court of Owls will have an important role in moving forward. Shortly after the panel has ended, actor Stephen Oyoung, who many may remember as Martin Li from PlayStation’s Spider-Man, shared a tweet that he will be playing Red Hood.
