REVIEW [Translated]: ‘I Am Groot’ is Just the Cutest

*For an original, untranslated version of this review – click here*

The first-ever Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off has arrived, and it’s just about the cutest thing ever. I Am Groot, also the first starring vehicle for Vin Diesel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is a CG-animated mini-show from the minds of Ryan Little and Kirsten Lepore. It’s first season consists of five short episodes, each only a few minutes long, that mostly feature Baby Groot stumbling his way through an adorable series of shenanigans across the galaxy. While the project is technically canon to the wider MCU, it more or less functions as entirely it’s own affair. There is no prerequisite viewing, aside from maybe the aforementioned Guardians films, and there is no pressure to understand anything important. It’s really just Baby Groot being Baby Groot for a solid 20 minutes.

Obviously, this is not a serious show made for grown-up adults. That doesn’t mean an adult can’t love it, because this series is the definition of lovable, but nobody should go into I Am Groot expecting a deep dive into the character’s origin or personal beliefs. Instead, one should anticipate hearty laughter and a little bit of water to come out of their leaky eyes. It’s essentially the opening dance sequence from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stretched out long enough to give it its own title. Anyone with a child who loves Groot will want to turn this on immediately because it will likely become that kid’s new favorite show. Diesel‘s endearing, pocket-sized hero pulls out all of his signature moves. From antagonizing equally delightful intergalactic creatures to performing the most destructive arts-and-crafts time ever, Groot does it all with the sweetest, most amusing big eyes and tiny smile the universe has ever seen.

That being said, these shorts are genuinely worth the watch for parents and children alike. I Am Groot can be viewed as an entertaining, educational project designed for toddlers, using Baby Groot and the problems he runs into as great examples of overcoming adversity. Granted, Groot is not a well-behaved baby. He is, however, wildly entertaining and sure to give kids a good chuckle. On the parental, or adult-who-doesn’t-have-kids-but-likes-Marvel-a-lot, side of things, I Am Groot is an undeniably charming look into a corner of the Marvel Universe that, frankly, nobody ever thought they would see. The only other Marvel character to make an appearance is Groot’s best friend and father figure, Rocket Raccoon, voiced again by Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper. Isolating Groot from his peers allows viewers to take a rather interesting peak at what sort of chaos the little tree can cause when left completely unattended.

Although nothing too special, I Am Groot does earn it’s place as part of the Disney+ catalogue, and will probably leave young ones wanting more. The shorts have the potential to be a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it chapter for the MCU, and may be the sort of thing people forget about after a single viewing, but it will ultimately be the response from the target audience that determines it’s longevity. More episodes have been confirmed to be on the way, so perhaps this is just the beginning of many Groot solo adventures down the line. Either way, it’s not anything worth stressing about. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy Baby Groot in all his precious glory.

SDCC: ‘I Am Groot’ Renewed for Season 2 Ahead of Disney+ Premiere

We’ve known for a while that a small collection of fun shorts starring Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot was heading our way. Now, we’re only a few weeks away of it finding its way to Disney+ but it turns out they have already renewed it for a second season, which just got revealed during San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Bradley Cooper Will Return to Voice Rocket in “I Am Groot”

Bradley Cooper Will Return to Voice Rocket in “I Am Groot”

The Guardians of the Galaxy are making their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 already, despite the franchise’s third installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, is not slated to hit theaters until 2023. Recently, the team showed up in the opening minutes of Thor: Love and Thunder, and a Guardians holiday special are set to land on Disney+ later this year.

Another, smaller, project based on the characters of the franchise is also set to debut soon. I Am Groot, a series of shorts based on the popular age-confused tree-like alien Groot will hit Disney+ on August 10, 2022. A new report has revealed that Marvel Studios released early footage of the Disney+ series, and it includes the return of another Guardians favorite.

According to The Direct, an early theatrical screening of the first episode of I Am Groot, Bradley Cooper is confirmed to return as Rocket Raccoon in the Disney+ shorts. Cooper’s name appeared in the credits as Rocket Raccoon, suggesting his appearance in at least one episode of I Am Groot and marking his sixth appearance in the MCU to date.

While it is fun that Cooper and Rocket will be involved, director James Gunn has hinted that the short series may not be canon to the greater MCU. I Am Groot, will consist of five shorts but there are no exact details on how long each individual episode will be, but as they are titled “shorts” we shouldn’t expect an overarching storyline or long episodes. This isn’t a new thing for the service and isn’t a sign that they are changing the model, as it’s rather common for the service in how they tackle their shorts, such as Olaf Presents.

I Am Groot is scheduled to release on Disney+ on August 10, 2022.

  • ‘I Am Groot’ Won’t Be a Weekly Release

‘I Am Groot’ Won’t Be a Weekly Release

So far, Disney+ has been focusing on a weekly release model unlike its streaming giant counterpart, Netflix. All Marvel Studios series were released on a weekly basis and it looks like they will break that tradition with the upcoming short collection of I Am Groot. It’s following the same structure as other shorts that have was released in the past on the Disney+ service, such as Olaf Presents or Scrat Tales.

The Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff, I Am Groot, will consist of five shorts but there are no exact details on how long each individual episode will be, but as they are titled “shorts” we shouldn’t expect an overarching storyline or long episodes. Also, this isn’t a new thing for the service and isn’t a sign that they are changing the model, as it’s rather common for the service in how they tackle their shorts.

It would be a tall order to tell people to wait weekly for shorts that might not even break the two-minute mark. While it would be great to see them play around with some series being made available to binge, it doesn’t seem like this is their plan for any other series outside of the various shorts that they’ve offered with Pixar, Disney Animation, and now Marvel.

  • Disney+’s ‘I Am Groot’ Shorts May Not be MCU Canon

Disney+’s ‘I Am Groot’ Shorts May Not be MCU Canon

Here’s a surprise, while it seemed like most of the upcoming projects from Marvel Studios would remain as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they may be twisting that moving forward. X-Men ’97 already hinted at something as part of a different universe, but it seems the I Am Groot shorts might be their own thing as well according to producer James Gunn. While discussing the newly announced release window for the series, the Guardians of the GAlaxy director revealed that they aren’t necessarily part of the “Guardians saga” and went on to further elaborate:

It doesn’t really denounce that these shorts aren’t something that takes place within the larger MCU, but rather that it very likely doesn’t matter to themselves. In a way, it just exists in its own little pocket especially as it explores a time when Groot was during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It wouldn’t be too surprised if it just exists as its own story that just happens to use elements from the original franchise that it technically takes place in it but still explores its own story without needing to connect.

It wouldn’t be too surprising, however, to see how Marvel Studios starts growing beyond its mainline franchise. They have introduced a multiverse of opportunities and it wouldn’t be too surprising that they start to explore standalone stories within the MCU that aren’t dependent on being part of its main storyline. Plus, these shorts have generally been more independent storylines that focused on telling some cute and funny jokes rather than be an ongoing storyline, as we’ve seen with Olaf quite a bit on his Disney+ journey.

  • New ‘I Am Groot’ Merch Features Multiple Baby Groots With Facial Hair

New ‘I Am Groot’ Merch Features Multiple Baby Groots With Facial Hair

We still know very little about the upcoming animated I Am Groot project. It seemingly may be a small project similar to the final Blue Sky series, Scrat Tales. Instead of a fully-fledged show, it’s more like a vignette of small episodes featuring the adorable version of Groot we were introduced to in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While we are still waiting for an update on the project, it seems that some merchandise has found its way online.

Box Lunch has shared some promo art as part of its clothing line which teases Baby Groot. They are titled “I Am Groot” which would hint at a connection to the upcoming release, and it’s not uncommon for its merchandise to find its way online long before the project does. There is one rather curious detail that stands out, it features a second Groot with a mustache.

Marvel I Am Groot Hearts Trio Long Sleeve T-Shirt, NAVY, hi-res

Now, facial hair isn’t the actual big aspect, even if it’s a funny design element. It may tease that the upcoming animated series may include multiple different versions of Groot, as we can clearly see them with different facial hair. Now, it seems unlikely that this project will explore the multiverse but there is one possibility that works within the series canon.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot sacrifices himself and is blown up while protecting his friends. The current Baby Groot was made from the remnants of some twigs that would eventually grow into the current Groot we know and love. Yet, there’s a possibility that other versions were born the same way and his upcoming adventure may end up meeting other versions of himself.

  • ‘I Am Groot’ May Be Headed to D+ This September

‘I Am Groot’ May Be Headed to D+ This September

While we still know very little of the second Marvel Studios animated project, I Am Groot, we may have gotten a rough release date thanks to Marvel Collectors Corps, a subscription box containing collectibles from Funko.

Marvel Collector Corps has been ongoing for a while now, with each box being themed around a different Marvel release. For example, the next Collector Corps box will be themed around Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, while another in November was themed after Eternals. Typically, each release is scheduled around the same month that the project is based on comes out in theaters or to Disney+. Thanks to a new release schedule, we know that the I Am Groot themed box will be out in September, seemingly confirming the show’s late summer release date.

This lines up with the show dropping after Ms. Marvel and likely either shortly after, or shortly before the second season of What If…?. With two animated shows coming from Marvel Studios close together this year, it seems like the expansion into animation is definitely going to be a big extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. Also to look forward to on the animation front are Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which will follow Peter Parker before we met him in Captain America: Civil War, and X-Men ’97, a reboot of the original X-Men: The Animated Series. It is great to see a possible release date for I Am Groot in order to get a clearer picture of the release schedule for the year. While this doesn’t mean the September release is confirmed, it is hard to picture the show coming long before or after based on previous Collector Corps boxes.

  • Official Japanese Marvel Site May Offer First Glimpse at Marvel Studios’ 2022 Disney+ Schedule

Official Japanese Marvel Site May Offer First Glimpse at Marvel Studios’ 2022 Disney+ Schedule

We’ve been trying to wrap our heads around what the schedule might look like for Marvel Studios’ release plans on Disney+ in 2022. We even made a conceptual timeline, which you can check out here. The latest reveal that we’ll get a Moon Knight trailer on Monday at least confirmed what we can expect early on, but we still know very little about the rest of the year. Luckily, the Japanese Marvel site may have offered our potential first glimpse at the 2022 release schedule.

What stands out is that Moon Knight is included ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is then followed by She-Hulk. That schedule makes sense given the six-episode structure, but what is a bit confusing is that between its release and that of Thor: Love and Thunder in July, we would get not one but three Disney+ series. In addition to She-Hulk, I Am Groot and the second season of What If…? are included. Of course, it may overlap given when the shows might release, but Ms. Marvel seemingly won’t release until the fourth Thor film hits theaters in July.

It seems a bit unrealistic we’d get three shows in the course of a few months, as 2021 was quite spread out. Plus, there are also quite a few Star Wars series that is aiming a release next year Also, if this is a potential “release schedule” it does make you wonder why Secret Invasion is set ahead of November’s release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but is the only one listed without a release date. Plus, it would make sense for that series to release around The Marvels and it might be quite a lot if they release six series over the course of a year.

It actually makes you wonder just how big a project I Am Groot might be, as it could be closer to Disney+’s classic shorts. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s more an Olaf Presents-type series that consists of a few smaller segments. So, that would make its release more fitting but What If…? and She-Hulk within around two months seems like a lot. Perhaps they are trying out a new strategy this year, but we won’t know until we get a clearer release date.
