  • ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Officially Joins the 1 Billion Club at the Worldwide Box Office

‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Officially Joins the 1 Billion Club at the Worldwide Box Office

Jurassic World Dominion has officially passed the lucrative threshold of earning over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. For a film that was released in June, it took a more gradual time period than most films to reach this milestone. Nonetheless, it’s certainly notable being only the third film to gross one billion since the pandemic began. One of the two is Top Gun: Maverick, which remains well ahead of Dominion as the highest-grossing film of 2022 thus far.

The assumed final installment of the Jurassic World saga completes the trilogy’s ability to earn over $1B globally. The total earnings from the trilogy are currently at $6.02B. Jurassic World Dominion is also the seventh film from Universal to reach this financial milestone.

Overall, this has been a banner year from Universal at the box office between Dominion, family films in Minions: Rise of Gru and The Bad Guys, and horror films in The Black Phone and Nope. Between all of these films, Universal has passed the threshold of over three billion dollars at the global box office this year. They are the first studio to reach that financial milestone since 2019.

And the film studio is far from finished with new releases this year. Of note, Bros, Tar, Ticket to Paradise, She Said, Puss n’ Boots: The Last Wish, and The Fabelmans (which just won the Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award) are all set to release by the end of 2022.

In terms of upcoming films that have the potential to join Dominion and Maverick in one billion earned globally, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water seems to stand the best chance to be financial needle-movers for Disney by year’s end.

  • ‘Lightyear’ Loses to ‘Jurassic World 3’ While ‘Top Gun’ Continues to Soar

‘Lightyear’ Loses to ‘Jurassic World 3’ While ‘Top Gun’ Continues to Soar

The numbers are in and, as sadly expected, Lightyear isn’t going to set the box office in flames. The Toy Story spinoff which isn’t necessarily an actual spinoff of the original franchise, but rather a fictional film that takes place in that same universe, has opened to $51M over the weekend. With a wide release in 4,255 North American which is on par with many current releases but it does seem like family audiences aren’t quite ready yet to return to theaters as initially hoped. David A. Gross, who runs Franchisee Entertainment Research, shared the following statement on its release:

This is a soft opening for a spin-off of one of the most successful animation series of all time. ‘Toy Story’ defied gravity at the box office during its 27 year run, each episode topping the last, the last two clearing a billion dollars worldwide. But like all spin-offs, the ‘Lightyear’ story is narrower now.

    David A. Gross

The early expectations had the film at around $70M but it’s sadly now going to be one of Pixar’s least successful releases, especially with a high production cost of $200M. Lightyear isn’t a sign of Pixar losing its draw at the box office, but more a reflection of the pandemic’s influence on younger audiences and Disney+’s strategy of using one of its biggest franchises to boost subscription numbers. Internationally the film has also been a lukewarm release with $34.6M, which puts it at an international release of $85.6M, which is a far cry from its initial expected $135M+.

Jurassic World Dominion kept its dominance at the box office, as it held on to the top spot, but did face a harsh 60% drop in its second weekend. It’s not too far from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ 67% and highlights how these franchise films operate. With a lower opening than the Marvel Studios project, it reflects how these drops normally operate, but the dinosaur epic still generated $58.6M which is a strong release and now stands at $259M domestically.

It’s second-weekend highlights even more how much Top Gun Maverick is an exception than the rule, as the film has taken a massive $44M in its latest weekend which is just a 15% drop. As such, it is the second-highest fourth weekend with the only exception being Avatar. The film is likely going to pass a billion in just a few weeks as it already stands at $885M and will likely become the highest-grossing film of the year very soon. It sparked the box office in a big way and is a testament to just how sudden some projects can pull in viewers.

  • ‘Lightyear’ Currently Underperforming, May Not Dethrone ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’

‘Lightyear’ Currently Underperforming, May Not Dethrone ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’

It looks like Lightyear is struggling a bit to catch its legs at the box office, as the latest Pixar film may not beat Jurassic World: Dominion at the box office this weekend. Going in, the Pixar film was eyeing a potential $85M+ opening weekend but after a lukewarm Friday, it does seem like Dominion may keep its dominion (pun fully intended) over the box office domestically. The film opened to $20.7M on Friday, which includes the decent $5.2M preview screenings, yet the film is very likely to end at around $52M.

There are many theories online on what exactly led to this opening. The biggest aspect is definitely the pandemic, as while Top Gun Maverick pulled audiences back into seats they likely haven’t visited in a long time, families are still a bit uncertain. They also released the last three films exclusively on Disney+ to push subscriptions but it may have shown its fangs on dragging that out while letting Marvel Studios roam free as of late.

Luckily, the numbers would put it as one of the strongest family films since the pandemic started, but a $200M budgeted spinoff based on a toy from a film franchise is not an easy sell. It did get an A- CinemaScore, which hints at word-of-mouth being strong for the Pixar release. Lightyear may just not have the same selling effect that Pixar hoped for, as it doesn’t have the Toy Story branding, and outside of its main character, has no connection to the original.

So, it’s a spinoff that is also an original film based on pre-existing characters without the original voice. Toy Story 4 opened to a powerful $120.9M in 2019, which was already a powerhouse year, but simply highlights that this is more a case of Solo: A Star Wars Story than

  • ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Roars Up Mighty $143M+ Opening Weekend Domestically

‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Roars Up Mighty $143M+ Opening Weekend Domestically

Even a negative critical reception wouldn’t stop Jurassic World: Dominion from dominating the box office. The third and supposedly final entry of the World franchise opened to $143M+ opening over the weekend. Its Saturday jumped to $46.7M, a surprising 12% climb from its Friday (incl. Thursday previews) grosses of $41.7M. As such, Colin Trevorrow’s return to the franchise is leaving its footprint at the box office.

So far, it’s the fourth-best opening of the domestic box office going by EntTelligence’s moviegoers counted, which is at 10.8M right after Top Gun Maverick’s 11.6M. So far, it’s the best opening for a non-superhero film since the pandemic started and even passed the previous holder Top Gun: Maverick, which just reached $393.3M, which will likely beat Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to $400M domestically. Universal’s Domestic Distribution head offered the following insight:

This incredible debut for Jurassic World Dominion is driven by not only the loyal fans of the original Jurassic trilogy beginning in 1993, but many new fans experiencing Jurassic for the first time as our casts united for an epic conclusion.  After a long journey from being the first Hollywood film to safely return to production during COVID, up through our global release dates, we’re thrilled for our filmmakers and talent who worked tirelessly on this movie, and for our great partners in exhibition benefitting from a tremendous start to their summer

Dominion is definitely leaving a splash at the box office and is highlighting how far we’ve come since the pandemic tore down any potential expectations. The original trilogy from Jurassic Park, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neil, definitely also left an imprint on audiences and may have added some more weight to the project. That’s not too shabby for the worst-reviewed entry in the franchise. Though, it received a positive A- CinemaScore putting it potentially still keeping a decent hold at the box office’s future weekends.

  • ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Eyeing $325M+ Opening Weekend Worldwide

‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Eyeing $325M+ Opening Weekend Worldwide

Top Gun Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have reinvigorated the box office, as we are slowly nearing the usual developments from before the pandemic shook up the world. Now, a third film is eyeing a massive opening weekend as early projects have Jurassic World Dominion eyeing a domestic $125M+ opening weekend with a release within 4,600+ theaters. On top of that, it will add $120M+ worldwide. So far, it has already earned $55.7M in specific territories.

Colin Trevorrow is taking over the third entry of the Jurassic World franchise after J.A. Bayona took over for the Fallen Kingdom. While the opening with $125M+ is strong, it’s only the third-best opening for the franchise as the first entry opened to $208.8M back in 2015 before its first sequel took in $148M three years later. The original Jurassic World dominated the box office back in the day and it was overtaken by Star Wars: Force Awakens half a year later.

The big selling point for the new entry is naturally the return of legacy actors Sam Neil, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. While Goldblum was sold as returning in the last entry, he only had a brief role at the end of the film. This time around, all three will have bigger roles this time around. It was one of the few films that started production during the pandemic and had faced some delays due to positive COVID tests. It took them 100 days to finish production.

Generally, it seems that Jurassic World: Dominion is facing similar developments as Top Gun Maverick, but it’ll be interesting to see if it can even compete with the legs that the jet-fueled blockbuster. Speaking of, that film might face its biggest decline with a predicted 50% to fall to $45M. Yet, its word-of-mouth has been powerful and with Dominion getting some mixed reviews, it may have a stronger hold once again. Luckily, the older target audience for the Tom Cruise film might not bite too much into each other’s box office but is also one of the core reasons for its longevity, as an inactive movie-going audience is making up for its absence for the last few years.

  • ‘Jurassic World’ Kicks Off Strong Internationally As ‘Top Gun Maverick’ Passes $200M in the US

‘Jurassic World’ Kicks Off Strong Internationally As ‘Top Gun Maverick’ Passes $200M in the US

Top Gun Maverick will end the day passing $200M as it pulled in a powerful Wednesday with $14.8M, which is a 6% drop. An incredible weekday takes and highlights the power this film has on the word-of-mouth side. It already passed the original’s domestic box office, which stood at $180.2M, and Mission: Impossible‘s $180.9M. Internationally, the film is already on its way towards $400M and may even pass $500M by Sunday. So, it’ll definitely be a contender for the top release for the summer.

The film has seen a younger draw, which is great in addition to the older main crowd, and is now enjoying the fact that 46% of schools closed and 88% of colleges went on break. Its only main competitor that might take a big chunk out of its box office will be the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion. Speaking of, the film has already pulled in $16.7M on Thursday and is on its way to potentially pull in $50M+ over the weekend internationally.

It’s only available in a few markets and will release in 44 more once June 10th rolls around. It had a huge opening over in South Korea, and the film is likely to be a big competitor this year. Surprisingly, the only European market it released in was Italy, where it is 75% ahead of Fallen Kingdom. Top Gun is still performing strong internationally, but it may take a bite once it truly releases fully next week. It’s going to be quite interesting to see two giant releases once again compete for the market, which hasn’t been seen at this size since before the pandemic.

  • ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Beats Out ‘Doctor Strange 2’ and ‘No Way Home’ to Become South Korea’s Highest Day One Release

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Beats Out ‘Doctor Strange 2’ and ‘No Way Home’ to Become South Korea’s Highest Day One Release

Top Gun: Maverick was already making numbers over the weekend as it seeks to potentially take the crown home as the biggest domestic release, its new competitor is already starting a dominant swing internationally. Jurassic World: Dominion was already released on June 1st in South Korea. It will be followed by Mexico and Argentina. While the film won’t officially be released until June 10th, Japan even being as late as June 29th, the film has already earned $6.05M in South Korea on its first day. That is higher than Spider-Man: No Way Home ($5.3M) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($5.9M).

It’s the year of box office gainers, as we are more and more gaining momentum from before the pandemic. Dominion also has quite the legacy factor of its own to play with as the main cast is joined by veterans Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. The film is currently eyeing a potential $130M opening which would be lower than both Fallen Kingdom ($148M) and the first Jurassic World ($160M), which was a surprise hit that no one saw coming at the time.

Unlike most blockbuster franchises that have people doing superhuman things, including Top Gun Maverick, Jurassic World was the more down-to-earth concept if you ignore the human eating dinosaurs revived to life in a zoo. It may stand out from the rest and we’ll see if Top Gun gave the box office the momentum it needed as older audiences are slowly willing to enter cinemas again after taking a break through the pandemic.

  • ‘Dominion’s Colin Trevorrow Wants Bryce Dallas Howard to Direct a ‘Jurassic World’ Film

‘Dominion’s Colin Trevorrow Wants Bryce Dallas Howard to Direct a ‘Jurassic World’ Film

Bryce Dallas Howard has been a popular choice to direct a good amount of films ever since she made a splash with her work on The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. She’s become a frontrunner for many to tackle a new film in the Star Wars franchise, but also has become a popular choice to potentially tackle a Marvel Studios film.

Yet, Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow wants her to take on a sequel to Jurassic World, as revealed in an interview with Variety where he highlights that he wants to tackle the franchise.

She knows I want that, so I’m not going to pretend. Bryce actually can direct whatever she wants, and if she would ever make that choice to come and make a Jurassic movie, we would consider that a tremendous privilege for us.

    Colin Trevorrow

Howard has left quite the impact in the industry behind and in front of the camera. It’s interesting to see Trevorrow also look for someone to potentially carry on the franchise, as he’ll likely want to tackle other projects after wrapping up work on the third entry of Jurassic World. As the series pushes to dinosaurs co-existing with humanity, it would be interesting to see how they might continue the franchise and what unique vision Howard might bring to the series.

  • ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’s Colin Trevorrow Talks How He Approach Dinosaurs Co-Existing With Humanity

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’s Colin Trevorrow Talks How He Approach Dinosaurs Co-Existing With Humanity

The ending of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom unleashed dinosaurs unto the rest of the world, as they escaped an underground black market. When we first heard of Dominion, the sequel seemingly teased that humanity is starting to co-exist with the prehistoric creatures that are now no longer trapped in a theme park or on an island, but rather actually living in the current world.

In an interview with Total Film, director Colin Trevorrow talks about how he approached the concept and highlighted how he tried to simply replicate how animals co-exist with us currently rather than twisting the concept that would make it seem too unrealistic. Dinosaurs are animals and we still co-exist with them, even have some as pets, which opens up a lot of potential.

But it was important to me that we try to at least approach it from a place of reality: what if this insane thing actually happened? The rule that we made was, we tried not to have dinosaurs do anything or interact in any way that animals wouldn’t in our modern world. You know, we have bears and tigers and lions and things that will eat you if you go into their territory, or mess with their young. We have animals in zoos. We weaponize them. We put them in our homes as pets. We sell them in markets. So all of these different realities are in this film in different ways.

    Colin Trevorrow

Trevorrow also goes on to highlight how Malta plays into the story, as it once again has dinosaurs trapped on an island. In a way, the sequence pays tribute to the original franchise with how they were trapped on Isla Nubar but this time without the rebuilt natural habitat to keep them at bay.

There is one city. There’s a sequence in Malta. The dinosaurs didn’t come there by choice. Malta is really the hub for the dinosaur underground black market. It’s where they’re imported and exported, bought and sold. And that’s part of our world, too – the animals are displaced from their natural habitat, as they were in the last movie, and brought to other places where they don’t necessarily belong. And chaos can easily ensue there…

    Colin Trevorrow

The concept is going to be quite interesting to explore, especially as it opens up what it means for the future of the franchise. Its selling point was the initial Jurassic Park that was swiftly left behind as the dinosaurs continue to find a way to escape their encapture after the first film. Yet, if they continue with the franchise going into a fourth, we may see more of a world where people learned to live with dinosaurs.

  • First Look at ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’s Funko Pops

First Look at ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’s Funko Pops

Jurassic World: Dominion isn’t that far off from hitting theaters, and with it, Funko has revealed our first look at some of the new additions to their collection. As to be expected, not only are our human companions getting their own figurines, but a variety of the dinosaurs will also get the focus alongside the veteran T-Rex and the Velociraptor Blue.

It’s also great to see Funko Pops of our favorite Jurassic Park members, who are making their grand return in the upcoming sequel. While Jeff Goldblum did have a minor appearance at the end of The Fallen Kingdom, this is the first time that Sam Neill and Laura Dern are making their return as Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler. So, if you ever wished to add them to your collection, now is your chance.

The figurines look great and there’s a fun charm to the various dinosaurs, especially how well the design surprisingly works with the dead eyes. The giant addition is very likely the new Giganotosaurus, which is set to make its live-action debut in the upcoming film. We’ll see if they might have other dinosaurs that’ll surprise us in the upcoming film and get some additional Funko Pops after its release. So, we’ll see what other surprises the film has in store for us.
