‘Glass Onion’ Already Among Netflix’s Most-Watched Films

Perhaps the $450M investment was worth every penny after all, as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has already broken some records over on Netflix. As of now, the film has already entered the top 10 most popular films of all time for the streamer, as it has pulled in 209.4M hours watched since its release on December 23rd. It has edged out The Kissing Booth from its position to become the 10th most-viewed film of all time for the service, and that within such a short amount of time.

2021’s Red Notice still remains the number one most-watched film at 364M, but there’s a chance that if Glass Onion keeps up its current pace, it could become the first competition for the throne. It should also be noted that Knives Out also entered the Top 10 with around 17 million hours watched; showcasing the draw this film has for many to revisit the previous entry and a smart way to keep people rewatching what came before by making them Netflix exclusives.

At this rate, Glass Onion has confirmed Netflix’s suspicion that there’s a lot of interest in the whodunnit franchise. Hopefully, a third entry could keep up this momentum and also inspire director Rian Johnson to continue beyond just a simple trilogy. He has hinted that this franchise was meant more like a unique story with only Benoit Blanc truly connecting them which gives him many chances to establish an ever-growing franchise that doesn’t abide by any specific rules.

  • ‘Knives Out’ Director Talks Challenge of Benoit Blanc Meeting the Muppets

‘Knives Out’ Director Talks Challenge of Benoit Blanc Meeting the Muppets

Glass Onion has just been released on Netflix, but all the talk surrounding the film has slowly evolved into a recurring gag of Daniel Craig‘s Benoit Blanc meeting the Muppets. The Disney-owned, Jim Henson-created group of colorful characters hasn’t had a true project in a while and they are no stranger to being added to various projects for the delight of the Internet. After recently sharing his joy on the project, director Rian Johnson has now offered some insight into the challenge of bringing this joke to life.

I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie.

    Rian Johnson

He goes on to highlight that the challenge is then to pick a route on how this project comes together, highlighting that he doesn’t “want to compromise either” type of film that it could potentially be.

I wouldn’t want to compromise either of them. And I feel like in order to make it well and make it work, you’d have to make a choice and compromise one or the other. If I ever make a Muppet movie, I just want to make a great Muppet movie.

    Rian Johnson

He does jokingly end the piece by Tudum that he still wouldn’t want to reveal who’d be the murderer just in case he ever does find a way to balance the stories to bring this type of concept to life. He doesn’t say it’s impossible but it definitely isn’t what we should expect as the next entry after Glass Onion.

  • ‘Knives Out’ Director Loves the Idea of Including the Muppets in a ‘Glass Onion’ Sequel

‘Knives Out’ Director Loves the Idea of Including the Muppets in a ‘Glass Onion’ Sequel

After Benoit Blanc’s latest mystery led to him confronting a group of rich and influential people on a Greek island, many online had some fun trying to imagine what a sequel to Glass Onion would look like. Besides the countless fan castings due to the massive casting of the first sequel, there was one fun idea that seemed almost too perfect. Given Benoit Blanc’s usual habits, Social Media was ablaze with the hilarious idea of him eventually joining a mystery caper that sees him with nonother than the Muppets.

Yes, the internet started imagining what it would be like if Knives Out director Rian Johnson created a story that saw Blanc in the strangest mystery of his lifetime starring the loveable members of the Muppets. Luckily, it seems that Johnson is quite a fan of the idea after hearing about it in an interview that was shared by the official Glass Onion/Knives Out account on Twitter, where he revels in the idea.

Of course, there’s the challenge that the Knives Out sequels are all owned by Netflix, and The Muppets are part of Disney’s library. Of course, we could see them making a deal potentially that may lead to these films landing on Disney+ in exchange for them using the Muppets. It would be quite a lot of fun to see Kermit and Miss Piggy rocking some of the amazing fashion we see in these projects, while one of the Muppets ended up stabbed on the ground.

  • ‘Knives Out’ Director Already Started Work on ‘Glass Onion’ Sequel

‘Knives Out’ Director Already Started Work on ‘Glass Onion’ Sequel

After a long wait and $450M+ investment by Netflix, the first sequel to Knives Out has finally been released on the streaming platform. Glass Onion offers another exciting murder mystery starring Daniel Craig as the lovable detective Benoit Blanc. This time around, he finds himself stuck on a Greek island where things slowly start to unravel over an unlikely gathering of friends.

Glass Onion has just been released on the platform and while it didn’t blow away any expectations with its viewership numbers, the film did have a strong short run in theaters showcasing the power of this franchise. Luckily for director Rian Johnson, Netflix is already all-in for a sequel and it looks like he already started work on it.

So much of what I’m trying to do, because I’m starting to write the next one, is really just about trying to clear my head and think about what’s on my mind right now. Hopefully that translates in some way to what’s on all of our minds right now in terms of culture.

    Rian Johnson

Speaking of “terms of culture,” he was asked if he would tackle something inspired by Elon Musk‘s chaotic management of Twitter but he jokingly points out that he already technically made that film. It’ll also be interesting to see what cast he once again gets together, as the film was not only jam-packed with a talented cast of characters but also had various cameos sprinkled throughout in supporting or minor roles. Whatever he has in store

  • ‘Glass Onion’ Pulls in Strong 82.1M Hours Viewed over Christmas

‘Glass Onion’ Pulls in Strong 82.1M Hours Viewed over Christmas

It might not be too surprising, but it looks like Glass Onion‘s opening weekend was already quite the success for Netflix, as the film managed to pull in 82.1M hours viewed over the weekend from December 19th until 25th. Going by its total runtime of over two hours, the film was watched by around 35M households during its opening weekend.

The Knives Out sequel received a limited theatrical run, which had many scratching their heads on why they didn’t let it run for longer given it managed to pull in quite a bit of money and had a good chance of winning the weekend’s box office. Given the lack of mid-budget films in theaters, it could’ve been the one project to potentially push Netflix’s gross from its initial $450M investment for the exclusive rights to Glass Onion and its yet-to-be-filmed sequel.

Netflix also invested another $40M to get the film produced (yes, that investment did not include the actual production cost) but the film currently is slightly behind 2021’s The Unforgivable‘s opening of 85.9M. It’s on the lower end of the most popular films on the streaming service. Still, it’s a Christmas opening when most people are spending time with family and it has quite a long runtime.

One thing is clear, we’d definitely get a third Benoit Blanc sequel but the viewership numbers could be the selling point for a slew of sequels beyond just the two. While it seems unlikely that director Johnson will get his chance to get the “Knives Out Mystery” title changed, the viewership seems like a great sign for many more entries in the future.

  • Rian Johnson Shares His One Regret with ‘Glass Onion’

Rian Johnson Shares His One Regret with ‘Glass Onion’

After a long wait, Glass Onion has finally arrived. The official first sequel to Knives Out continues the story of Benoit Blanc, a genius detective that finds himself stranded on a curious trip with some of the most influential people to tackle an unlikely murder mystery.

Director Rian Johnson once again got the chance to tackle his genre-bending style in a new entry but it seems he does have one specific regret about the film’s release. It seems he’s not quite happy with the way Netflix handled the titling of the film.

As of now, the film’s official title is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, but that wasn’t what the director was going for. He purposefully chose the title to keep each entry as its own unique entry, kind of like “a new novel off the shelf.”

I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series but the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time.

    Rian Johnson

That is not too surprising given the genre he is playing around with. Most of the classic murder mystery novels each had a unique title and were mainly connected through their titular character. Perhaps “A Benoit Blanc Mystery” would’ve been more fitting rather than clinging to the title of the first film.

Netflix paid a lot of money to ensure that any future entries of the franchise remain exclusively on the streaming service. The film had a good chance to make a massive splash at the box office but was only given a limited release window. Now, we anxiously await to see just how big of a splash the film made on Netflix to ensure it’s future entries.

  • Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ Sequel ‘Glass Onion’ Gets Thanksgiving Limited Release

Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ Sequel ‘Glass Onion’ Gets Thanksgiving Limited Release

Many have lamented on the shame that the upcoming Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, was a Netflix exclusive. while it’s a great win for the streaming service, it does seem like a shame that we won’t get the iconic franchise’s return in theaters. Luckily, it seems that we’re still going to get our hands on the film in theaters, as the film is going to head to theaters for a theatrical sneak preview event for a week.

What does make this stand out is that the film will be released in AMC Theaters, Regal Movies, Cinemark, and many more, which makes it the most chains one of their films have been released in. As of now, the film is set to be available in 600 theaters over Thanksgiving week. So, this might mark the biggest move from the streaming service to embrace theatrical releases.

Rian Johnson has shared his excitement on Twitter:

That’s not all, as the Netflix Film head, Scott Stuber, also had the following to say on the release.

We’re excited to offer fans an exclusive sneak preview of Rian’s incredible film. Given the excitement surrounding the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, we hope fans will enjoy this special theatrical event in celebration of the film’s global debut on Netflix in December.

    Scott Stuber

So, for those hoping to see the return of Daniel Craig‘s Benoit Blanc in theaters luckily won’t have to wait too long and will get a chance to check out the film from November 23rd until the 29th. So, it’s a month early look at the film which has a December 23rd release date.

  • Rian Johnson Doesn’t Want to Stop Making Benoit Blanc Movies

Rian Johnson Doesn’t Want to Stop Making Benoit Blanc Movies

One of cinema’s most delightful surprises in the last few years was Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. The cozy, star-studded whodunnit was a massive hit with critics and audiences alike, who praised its clever nature and over-the-top performances. Crafted in the style of an Agatha Christie novel, Johnson has said before that he intends to continue writing mysteries for lead detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, to solve with his charming southern drawl. The first step in expanding Blanc’s legacy will be this year’s Glass Onion, the first sequel to Knives Out and the second Blanc case to hit screens.

The real question, however, is just how many Blanc movies Johnson is willing to make. Filmmaking is a little more labor intensive than writing a novel, and it wouldn’t be unrealistic for the acclaimed director to backtrack on previous sentiments after spending the last several years with the same character. Luckily for fans, there’s apparently no need to worry just yet. During a recent Q&A for those in attendance at the Toronto International Film Festival, Johnson reconfirmed his plans to make as many Blanc films as humanly possible while he’s still a working man.

Asked if there will be more Blanc adventures, the creative responded:

I’m going to keep making these until Daniel blocks me on his phone.

    Rian Johnson

This seemingly translates to something along the lines of, “I will never stop doing this.” Which, by all accounts, should be fine by the first film’s many fans. After all, Blanc was heavily inspired by Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot, and that character has appeared in 33 novels and over 50 short stories. Johnson better get busy if he hopes to match that in this lifetime.

  • ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Release Date Confirmed

‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Release Date Confirmed

Fans of Knives Out will have something additional to look forward to this coming holiday season. It has officially been confirmed that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be released worldwide on December 23 on Netflix and in select theaters.

Very little is currently known about what Rian Johnson has in store for his next installment beyond the notion of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc returning to the screen to solve an entirely new mystery. It has been confirmed that this upcoming film will significantly deviate from the sleepy, sweater-heavy New England autumn aesthetic, and instead will be set in Mediterranean Greece. Much like the original Knives Out film, Glass Onion will be host to an all-star cast of well-respected Hollywood stars. The ensemble for this mystery will include the likes of Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

When Johnson officially revealed the title of the new film, he also took time to speak about his inspiration from Agatha Christie’s novels and the large umbrella of themes and concepts she used within the mystery genre. Rian Johnson has confirmed then that this type of individuality between Glass Onion and Knives Out as mysteries will be an important facet of the franchise. The director has also provided insight into what that means for this upcoming film.

Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.

    Rian Johnson

It certainly will be interesting to follow how Daniel Craig’s Blanc will be defined in this role as the more overt protagonist in Glass Onion.

  • Title for ‘Knives Out’ Sequel Officially Announced

Title for ‘Knives Out’ Sequel Officially Announced

Official news has begun to arrive for the upcoming Knives Out sequel, which will be releasing exclusively on Netflix. In a thread of tweets from director Rian Johnson, the full title for the film has been revealed as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The tweet also confirms a “holiday season” release for the highly anticipated sequel. Netflix officially made the purchase for the sequel film rights in 2021 for $469 million dollars. This includes Glass Onion and an additional film in the Knives Out franchise down the road.

Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role of detective Benoit Blanc and will be joined by all new all-star cast likely full of prospective suspects. Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista fill out the ensemble for the sequel. Not much is currently known about the plot, nor the nature of its mystery; however, in his Twitter thread, Johnson discussed how Agatha Christie mysteries served as an inspiration, specifically her ability to provide great variance in the types of mystery stories she told. This is certainly interesting as it means the original film might not provide much of a sense of what to expect from Glass Onion. Set photos showed the film will be at least partially set in the Mediterranean so that at least will greatly differ from the chilled New England autumn aesthetic of Knives Out filled with the sweaters of Chris Evans. It will certainly be interesting to learn more information on what is in store for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in the coming months heading towards its release later this year.
