  • Emma Roberts Joins the Cast of ‘Madame Web’

Emma Roberts Joins the Cast of ‘Madame Web’

The cast of Sony’s Madame Web has grown again, this time adding Emma Roberts in another undisclosed role. Roberts joins Dakota Johnson, Isabel Merced, Celeste O’Connor and Sydney Sweeney in the Sony film.

With so many unknowns about the film and the cast continuing to expand, it’s hard to even speculate about what character Roberts may be playing. It’s believed that Johnson will be playing Julia Carpenter, the second character to go by Madame Web in the comics. Rumors around Sweeney’s character range from Silver Sable to Black Cat to Gwen Stacy, while fans are convinced that Merced will play Anya Corazon. One thing is certain, however, Sony is loading up the film, to be directed by S.J. Clarkson, with major talent.

In the comics, Madame Web was originally an older woman, Cassandra Webb, who possessed precognitive powers. Webb passed her powers, and the moniker, on to Julia Carpenter who held down the role during many major Spider-themed comic events. Madame Web will follow Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius and the recently wrapped Kraven the Conservationist in Sony’s ever-expanding universe of Marvel films.

  • Tahar Rahim Joins Dakota Johnson-Led ‘Madame Web’ Cast

Tahar Rahim Joins Dakota Johnson-Led ‘Madame Web’ Cast

Sony is moving fast with their upcoming adaptation of the Spider-Man character of Madame Web. After casting Dakota Johnson in the titular role, they swiftly added Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. Now, the film directed by S.J. Clarkson has added The Serpent‘s Tahar Rahim.

There’s no word on who exactly he may playing, as we know very little about the way they’ll adapt this character’s comic history. Madame Web is normally an elderly woman that was kept alive through a device that looked like a spider’s web. She had power over the Spider-Verse and became a constant mentor figure for Spidey’s more out-there adventures.

It seems Sony wants to make her their version of Doctor Strange, but it’ll be interesting to see how they manage to adapt it. There’s a lot of potentials to create an interesting original story around the character, and it seems we shouldn’t expect your typical hero vs. villain structure.

Sony has been obsessed with building its own Spider-Man universe even as it starts tacking elements from MCU’s playbook due to their Home-themed Spider-Man franchise. No Way Home confirmed that Sony won’t be playing in the same toolbox as them, but it’s also unsure who exactly would carry this franchise potentially.

Tom Holland remains in his own universe, which is very likely to have a fourth entry on the horizon. So, we can only speculate for now what the future has in store and which Spider-Man this group of anti-heroes may potentially join or fight. As of now, we have no clue how exactly it may fit together just yet.

  • Isabela Merced Joins Sony’s ’Madame Web’

Isabela Merced Joins Sony’s ’Madame Web’

Sony continues to expand its spider web. Isabela Merced has officially joined the cast of Madame Web in an undisclosed role, joining the previously announced Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Celeste O’Connor in the upcoming blockbuster. The film is set to be directed by S.J. Clarkson, and is aiming for a release on July 7, 2023. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have written the script, after a previous attempt from Kerem Sanga.

This is the third major comic book project Merced has had her name attached to. The actress, best known for her role as Dora the Explorer in 2019’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold, was a finalist for the role of Ratcatcher II in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and contended for a part in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Her credits also include roles in Transformers: The Last Knight and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, as well as a leading part in the forthcoming novel adaptation Turtles All the Way Down. While the nature of her involvement in Madame Web is still unknown, it seems like this is only the next step in a promising young career for Merced.

The plot of Madame Web is also being kept under wraps, though the character has been described as the closest thing Sony has to Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Traditionally an elderly woman confined to a chair, Web is usually more of a psychic character than a physical one. Although, there have been a few iterations of the spider-themed mentor in the comics. This includes one named Julia Carpenter, who is younger and was once a Spider-Woman. These traits may be closer to what ends up in the final film, if the casting of Johnson is any sort of indicator.

  • ‘Madame Web’: Celeste O’Connor is the Latest to Get Caught in Sony’s web

‘Madame Web’: Celeste O’Connor is the Latest to Get Caught in Sony’s web

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife actress is set to join Sony’s Madame Web. She’ll star alongside Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in the film. Johnson, of course, is expected to portray Madame Web, while the roles of Sweeney and O’Connor are currently unknown.

The film is Sony’s latest Spider-Man offshoot and will mark the first film to be headlined by a female character within the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. While details are sparse regarding Madame Web, it is thought the film will be an origin story for the clairvoyant character, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.

O’Connor is steadily building an impressive resume. Following Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the young actor can next be seen in Zach Braff’s A Good Person from MGM. O’Connor can currently be seen in Paramount+’s The In Between where she stars alongside Joey King.

Madame Web is being directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) from a script by Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Kerem Sanga, who write First Girl I Loved, took an earlier pass at the script prior to Sazama and Sharpless.

Madame Web will hit theaters on July 7th, 2023.

  • ‘Madame Web’ Film Scheduled For 2023

‘Madame Web’ Film Scheduled For 2023

Morbius is still biting his way through theaters, but Sony is already looking ahead. The studio has set an official release date for Madame Web, revealing the title character will make her live-action debut on July 7th, 2023. This puts the premiere of the movie, which reportedly takes place within Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, a solid seven months after that of its predecessor, J.C. Chandor‘s Kraven the Hunter. It also puts the project in competition with several other highly anticipated summer blockbusters, like Mission: Impossible 7 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which release later that same month.

Madame Web will adapt the story of Spider-Man’s one-time comic book spiritual guide. Although it has not been confirmed which version of the character will headline the plot, it has been reported that Sony is looking to make Madame Web their world’s version of Doctor Strange. S.J. Clarkson, known for her work on television shows like Dexter and House, will direct a script from frequent Sony collaborators Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Up-and-coming actress Sydney Sweeney recently boarded the film to star alongside Dakota Johnson. It is not known who either of the thespians are portraying, but it’s likely the studio would want such popular talents as leading faces of their franchise.

The move to give Madame Web a release date comes at the same time Sony revealed it would be delaying it’s sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With so many upcoming projects based on their most iconic intellectual property, it’s at least nice to have a good idea when they will all arrive in theaters.

  • Sydney Sweeney on Joining Sony’s ‘Madame Web’ Movie

Sydney Sweeney on Joining Sony’s ‘Madame Web’ Movie

Sydney Sweeney has emerged as one of the 2020s biggest up-and-coming young stars. She’s fresh off hit roles in HBO’s series Euphoria and The White Lotus, and has dabbled in film with appearances in movies like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Voyeurs. Next, she’ll be joining the modern superhero frenzy starring opposite Dakota Johnson in Sony’s Madame Web adaptation. The project will be the fourth installment in the studios’ Universe of Marvel Characters, following the Venom movies and this month’s Morbius.

Speaking to Variety, Sweeney finally opened up about preparing for her role in the film and her excitement over boarding the project:

I’ve been ordering a bunch of comic books. There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a really big fan of all of the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. I’ve grown up watching them all and I’ve been engulfed in the entire world my entire life, so being able to be a part of that is such an incredible, incredible thing.

    Sydney Sweeney

While the actress did not divulge which character she may be playing, she did reveal it’s not one fans might be expecting. Sweeney spoke about trying to take challenging roles as she furthers her career:

I like to try and find characters that are challenging for me in multiple different ways, and are completely different from one another. I want to continue to shock people with the characters that I play when they don’t expect that I would choose that next.

    Sydney Sweeney

While Morbius hasn’t exactly landed well with critics, or viewers, hopefully Madame Web will find the audience Sweeney is looking for. The film is set to be directed by S.J. Clarkson, and has no current release date.

  • Sydney Sweeney Further Hints at Marvel Studios’ Involvement With ‘Madame Web’

Sydney Sweeney Further Hints at Marvel Studios’ Involvement With ‘Madame Web’

It looks like history is set to repeat, as right after Sydney Sweeney was cast in a co-starring role for Sony’s upcoming Madame Web film, she took to Instagram to share her casting. The thing that stands out is the fact that she not only tagged Sony and Dakota Johnson in the picture but also Marvel Studios. In a way, it seemingly might build up a connection that they are involved with the project.

The curious aspect is that Johnson did the exact same shortly after her casting. With their involvement with the latest Spider-Man trilogy and hints that Olivia Wilde‘s upcoming adaptation of Spider-Woman may also be set in the MCU, the tag does add some potential to them taking on a more active role in Sony’s expanded universe moving forward.

Their involvement and Web’s potential multiversal connection could be a hint at how they can further expand this franchise without any continuity issues. The question is also who Sweeney might be playing, especially if she is co-starring alongside Dakota as Web. She’s been quite popular for a variety of Spider-Man characters, most notably Gwen Stacy and Black Cat. We’ll see if we get a clearer picture in the near future.

  • Madame Web Will Be Sony’s Spider-Man Universe’s Doctor Strange

Madame Web Will Be Sony’s Spider-Man Universe’s Doctor Strange

Sony is still moving forward with their expanded universe that is building around Spider-Man rather than using him as a jumping-off point. The news just broke that Euphoria‘s breakout star Sydney Sweeny was joining the project in an unnamed role. Yet, there was another big reveal hidden away, as it seems that they have big plans for Dakota Johnson‘s Madame Web. According to Deadline, she will be Sony’s equivalent to Doctor Strange due to her psychic sensory powers.

Strange has previously appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and it may have sparked the idea to explore some magical-based storytelling in their own universe. Plus, his upcoming adventure through the multiverse may have also made the easy connection. It does make you wonder if Multiverse of Madness also has him temporarily landing in this alternative cinematic universe to meet her before venturing on. Web could be a Variant of Strange if they want to make a loose connection.

Of course, there’s still the question of what Spider-Man might become the focus of this spinoff universe, as they now have three to choose from. At first, many thought Tom Holland might end up lost in this new universe but he remained in the MCU even as everyone forgot who he is. We’ll have to see what the future has in store for him and this new universe.

  • ‘Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney Joins Dakota Johnson-Led ‘Madame Web’

‘Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney Joins Dakota Johnson-Led ‘Madame Web’

Sony is moving full force with their upcoming Madame Web film, as it seems they’ve now added Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeny to star alongside Dakota Johnson in the Spider-Man spinoff. The film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson based on a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Kerem Sanga had worked on a previous draft. As you might guess, her role is still kept under wraps and the only thing we know is that she’ll be a co-star alongside Johnson.

It’s quite the big get for Sony, as she is hot off HBO’s second-most show just behind Game of Thrones. Sweeny also was quite the focus in the latest season, which put her on many studios’ top lists. She’s been quite the popular fan cast for various Spider-Man roles, but I doubt anyone expected her to join Sony’s universe as most had their money on Marvel studios trying to nab her for an upcoming project.

Still, it seems that the opportunity to work with Johnson was what inspired her decision. Plus, it’ll be the first female-centric film from the Spider-Man spinoffs, which could also be quite the draw. It’ll be interesting to see if other familiar faces from across the Spider-Verse make an appearance given Madame Web’s abilities. Perhaps they are using this as a jumping-off point for a live-action adaptation of the popular comic by the same name.

  • ‘Madame Web’s Dakota Johnson May Have Hinted at Marvel Studios Involvement

‘Madame Web’s Dakota Johnson May Have Hinted at Marvel Studios Involvement

Here’s a rather curious detail, as The Direct has noticed that actress Dakota Johnson, who was recently confirmed that she’ll tackle the role of Madame Web in her own solo outing, has shared a curious piece from Deadline on the project. That alone continues to confirm that she is past the “in talks” stage but what stands out is that she also tagged Sony alongside Marvel Studios in her post.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CZumGUHvraC/

Of course, this doesn’t confirm that Marvel Studios have any direct involvement with the project, but it’s not the first time that there have been hints they are starting to co-develop some of the projects currently over at Sony. We had a similar reveal from Olivia Wilde, who is currently working on a Spider-Woman project. She revealed that she was actively consulting Kevin Feige, the CEO of Marvel Studios, who also works with sony on the recent Spider-Man trilogy.

There’s a good chance that these projects continue to take place throughout different parts of the multiverse while Marvel can focus on their own projects. Yet, as Madame Web is known for her ties to Spider-Man’s own web of the multiverse, they may want to be involved as much as possible to ensure that it connects perfectly into their own plans. Plus, who knows how they might continue to explore the multiverse after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
