New Looks At ‘Quantumania’, ‘Across The Spider-Verse’ and More Released

Marvel Studios’ release slate for 2023 is absolutely packed from February to December, with a project planned for almost every month. Meanwhile, Sony’s Marvel Universe also continues to thrive with Kraven The Hunter and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse set to release later this year.

Alongside its release schedule, Marvel Studios’ marketing campaign is on a wild streak, with new promotional material coming out nearly every day. Continuing this trend, new stills from both Sony and Marvel Studios’ upcoming films have been released as part of USA Today’s exclusive sneak peek at 2023 in film.

In this still, members of the Guardians seem to be having a discussion at a cafeteria of sorts. The description for this still reads:

Drax (Dave Bautista, from left), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are on a new adventure to protect the universe in the concluding chapter to James Gunn’s Marvel cosmic trilogy.

The next still shows the Van Dyne family approaching a location in the Quantum Realm, possibly Kang’s homeworld. The description elaborates on this further:

Hank Pym (Michael Douglas, from left), Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) explore the mysteries of the Quantum Realm in the Marvel superhero film.

In the very same place where Rio Morales gave Miles the inspirational “mom talk” in the official trailer for the movie, we see Miles introducing Gwen to his parents. The scene will likely take place right during the start of the movie, as we can see Gwen wearing the same sweater from the official trailer for the movie.

Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore, left) reunites with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and introduces her to his parents (Luna Lauren Velez and Brian Tyree Henry) in the animated superhero sequel.

Disney Has Confirmed Certain Marvel Movies Will Receive IMAX Signature Sound by DTS

Get ready for some serious audiophile sound improvements, Marvel fans! According to an announcement made today by Disney Streaming, IMAX Corporation, and DTS, a bunch of Marvel movies are set to get a major audio boost. The films, which were not specified, will now feature IMAX Signature Sound.

Disney+ will be introducing a new way for subscribers with certain devices to experience select films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and more, with the expansion of IMAX Enhanced technology on the platform in 2023. This follows the recent decision to make IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio available for a selection of films. The IMAX signature sound by DTS will enhance the viewing experience for fans at home, offering a specially calibrated, high-quality picture and sound experience that mimics the IMAX theatre experience.

“We’re excited to roll out the next evolution of IMAX Enhanced technology on Disney+ in the coming year. This unique collaboration extends our long-standing relationship between Disney and IMAX and we look forward to delivering this new immersive audio experience alongside premium playback quality for current and future titles to our audiences around the world”

Jerrell Jimerson, Executive Vice President of Product, Disney Streaming

“We’re thrilled to bring audiences an even greater cinematic experience in the home and beyond as we roll out the next phase of IMAX Enhanced on Disney+. We can’t wait for fans to experience more of our cutting-edge, unparalleled sight and sound advancements across the entire IMAX Enhanced collection on Disney+, with more titles soon to come.”

Vikram Arumilli, Senior Vice President and General Manager

The IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio, which provides a screen size of 1:90:1 and up to 26% more screen space for certain scenes, is already available on all Disney+ supported devices. IMAX Enhanced signature sound by DTS will also be added to certain titles. Disney+ is the first major streaming service to offer IMAX Enhanced and it will allow subscribers to re-experience the MCU in a new way. It is suggested that more titles, including Pixar and Star Wars movies, may also be offered in IMAX Enhanced in the future.

  • Debra Jo Rupp Joins ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’

Debra Jo Rupp Joins ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’

Debra Jo Rupp (That ’70s Show) who had a small role in 2021’s WandaVision has been reported to have joined the cast of Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Rupp appeared in several episodes of WandaVision as Mrs. Hart, within the Hex, and citizen Sharon Davis when it was lifted. It’s presumed she will reprise her role as a citizen of Westview in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which will focus on Kathryn Hahn’s wicked witch. Rupp is the second actress who played a citizen of Westview in WandaVision to join the cast of Coven of Chaos, joining Emma Caulfield.

Originally slated for a late 2023/early 2024 release, Coven of Chaos was not featured on a recent update to 2023 projects, leading to the belief it has been pushed to at least 2024.

  • ‘Robot Chicken’ Writer Among Those Credited For ‘The Marvels’ Script

‘Robot Chicken’ Writer Among Those Credited For ‘The Marvels’ Script

According to Marvel Studios, via a new official press release for The Marvels, Zeb Wells is confirmed to be one of four writers credited with penning the film’s script. Wells joins the previously announced Megan McDonnell who served as a staff writer and story editor on WandaVision. Additionally, Elissa Karasik, a staff writer and executive story editor on Loki has also been given a writing credit on the film, as well as the film’s director Nia DaCosta.

Like both McDonnell and Karasik, Wells is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is credited with writing Episode 7 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, “The Retreat,” and is the head writer and executive producer on the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series. Wells is also the creator of the adult stop-motion animated sitcom SuperMansion and was a writer and director for Robot Chicken, for which he won an Emmy. Wells has also written numerous titles for Marvel Comics, including Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways, Heroes for Hire and various Spider-Man titles.

Considering his comedic background, Wells‘ involvement would seem to suggest that the Captain Marvel sequel might be taking a rather humorous turn. However, tonal shifts have been seen before and executed well in MCU sequels such as Thor: Ragnarok and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Both of those tonal shifts resulted in incredibly successful sequels and The Marvels looks to have a chance to follow that trend. Fans will just have to wait and see once The Marvels is released in theaters on July 28, 2023.

  • Daredevil Will Not Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

Daredevil Will Not Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

It would seem audiences will have to wait a little longer for the Man Without Fear to meet the Merc With a Mouth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this month, during a guest spot at German Comic-Con in Dortmund, Daredevil star Charlie Cox stated he’d love to see his character appear in the next Deadpool film, which is currently set to feature Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their iconic roles in a wild, time-hopping adventure. The actor explained that, with the darker nature of his upcoming solo series Daredevil: Born Again, he felt that a cross-over with the Deadpool franchise would be both fun and possible. Unfortunately, though, a recent interview with TechRadar has thrown some cold water on fans’ hopes that this might actually come to fruition.

When asked about his previous comments, Cox decided to set the record straight. He had only been pondering possibilities, and as of now, he’s “definitely” not in Deadpool 3:

Oh god, what did I say again? Oh yeah, I said that in Germany, didn’t I? I can tell you now, I’m definitely not in Deadpool 3.

    Charlie Cox

Cox made his MCU debut as Matt Murdock last year, making an important cameo as the lawyer of Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He reappeared not long after in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+, acting as a courtroom rival and part-time lover of Tatiana Maslany‘s Jennifer Walters, and wearing the Daredevil suit into action for the first time since the original Daredevil series ended its run in 2018. Now, fans are rabid to know who they might see him team up with next. Daredevil and Deadpool have a history of interacting in the comics, but it looks like a live-action adaptation of their complicated relationship is not currently in the cards at Marvel Studios.

  • Kate Dickie Joins ‘Loki’ Season 2

Kate Dickie Joins ‘Loki’ Season 2

Kate Dickie has entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline announced today that the Game of Thrones actress secretly, but officially, joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Loki for its upcoming second season at some point during filming. While exact details surrounding Dickie‘s role are still being kept under wraps, the outlet stated it’s believed she will be playing a villain when she appears in the series. Production on the second season of Loki has already been completed, so the former Tinsel Town star was likely added to the cast quietly several months ago.

She joins returning leads Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino, as well as Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Eugene Cordero, and Tara Strong. The only other confirmed newcomers, at this time, are Blindspotting star Rafael Casal, whose role is also still unknown, and Ke Huy Quan.

Loki Season 2 is set to be directed by the duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, taking over for Kate Herron from the first season, and written by Eric Martin, who replaces Michael Waldron. Plot details for the show’s second outing are sparse, but it’s expected to pick up where the previous season finale left off, with Hiddleston‘s Loki mysteriously stuck in a foreign version of the Time Variance Authority, seemingly run by a variant of Jonathan Majors‘ He Who Remains. It is unknown if Majors will return.

There is no current release date for Loki‘s second season, though it is slated to premiere sometime in the middle of 2023.

  • New Look at Vulture Wings From Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 4’

New Look at Vulture Wings From Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 4’

In the last few months, plenty of news has come out about Sam Raimi’s now-legendary unmade sequel, Spider-Man 4. Thanks to a new book, Sean O’Connell’s With Great Power, fans received a heap of fresh information on what could have been with actor John Malkovich and his intended role, the villainous Vulture. The antagonist, who would end up being portrayed by Michael Keaton in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, was set to engage the film’s titular hero in multiple aerial set pieces, which likely would have made for some spectacular moments on the big screen. Unfortunately, all that’s ever been made public from those scenes are the original pieces of concept art, which at least gave Spider-Man diehards a decent idea of what Malkvoich’s Vulture would have looked like.

Now, in a surprising reveal, comic creator Ken Penders has taken to his social media to share some previously withheld images of the first live-action Vulture wings in all their practicality. In his tweets, Penders explains that a friend of his had been working on the Vulture suit before production on Spider-Man 4 was shut down, and Penders was lucky enough to check it out:

The design seen in the images matches the recent revelation that Malkovich’s Vulture would have weaponized his mechanical wings and used the feathers as blades. They also give fans a better idea as to how the movie’s version of Adrian Toomes would have worn the suit and used it in battle against Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. This may be the best look ever given at the real wings, and could end up being the best look anyone ever gets.

  • Angela Kang Boards Sony and Amazon’s ‘Silk: Spider Society’

Angela Kang Boards Sony and Amazon’s ‘Silk: Spider Society’

Amazon and Sony are officially looking to expand the Spider-Man universe on the small screen with Silk officially a go. After first being announced in September 2020, the series seemed to land Watchmen‘s Tom Spezialy as its showrunner. However, The Walking Dead‘s Angela Kang is now overseeing the project for both Sony and Amazon/MGM. The project has also received a new title in Silk: Spider Society.

Kang, who was originally set to showrun the upcoming Norman Reedus-led The Walking Dead spinoff, has since moved her overall deal to Amazon. Kang exited the spinoff series earlier this year after Melissa McBride exited the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kang’s overall deal with Amazon has been in the works for a bit now, and that is why she ultimately exited that project. Regarding the move, Kang expressed her excitement over both getting to work on Silk: Spider Society, as well as other various projects for Amazon.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive in to my first challenge — bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”

In a statement to the press, Sony Television president, Katherine Pope, expressed excitement over working with Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Kang to bring Cindy Moon’s story to life in live-action. She also revealed that the series will debut domestically on MGM+ before hitting Prime Video globally.

“We can’t wait to bring the adventures of Cindy Moon to life, thanks to the creative dream team of Chris and Phil, Angela and Amy, along with our partners at Marvel and Amazon. We know this exciting series with new and never-before-seen characters and storylines will wow audiences watching first on linear MGM+ and then around the world on Prime Video.”

Silk: Spider Society is the first of many series being developed by Sony as the studio looks to expand its Spider-Man universe on the small screen. As of now, it’s unknown what other projects are in development, although THR has teased that characters from Into the Spider-Verse might be on the table.

  • Ali Ahn & Maria Dizzia Join ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’

Ali Ahn & Maria Dizzia Join ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’

With filming set to kick off next month, Marvel Studios’ Agatha: Coven of Chaos has added two more to its growing cast. Deadline reports that Ali Ahn (Raising Dion) and Maria Dizzia (The Staircase) have joined the series. Like with the rest of the castings thus far, details regarding what roles both Ahn and Dizzia could be playing are being kept under wraps.

The duo joins Kathryn Hahn, who is reprising her WandaVision role as Agatha Harkness, as well as Joe Locke as well as Aubrey Plaza. Locke is rumored to be playing a grown-up version of Billy, while Plaza is said to be playing a mysterious villain in the series. Also appearing in the series is Emma Caulfield Ford, who will reprise her role as Dottie from WandaVision.

Along with starring in Netflix’s Raising Dion, Ahn has starred in shows such as Billions and The Path. She has also appeared in Supernatural, Orange is the New Black, White Collar and most recently lent her voice to Hulu’s Little Demon. While Dizzia has starred in shows like Orange Is the New Black, 13 Reasons Why, Emergence and The Staircase. Up next she’ll star in the Paramount+ series School Spirits.

Coven of Chaos hails from WandaVision creator Jac Schaefer, who serves as the head writer and executive producer.

  • ‘Black Panther’ Producer Gives Update On ‘Wakanda’ Spin-Off

‘Black Panther’ Producer Gives Update On ‘Wakanda’ Spin-Off

When 2017’s Black Panther introduced Wakanda to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it became an instant sensation. Ever since, director Ryan Coogler has been hard at work on expanding the fictional nation’s corner of the Marvel world. A sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is almost in theaters. After that, Coogler will look ahead to the release of Ironheart on Disney+, a series which he is producing based on a character – Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams – debuting in his film, Wakanda Forever. On top of this, there are two more Disney+ projects reportedly in development from Coogler. One that’s set to delve into Wakanda and its people, and another that will tell the origin of Danai Gurira’s Okoye.

It’s possible that these shows are one-in-the-same, though this has yet to be confirmed or denied. In fact, not much has been said about these projects at all in the time since they were announced. That finally changed this past weekend. Speaking to Collider ahead of Wakanda Forever’s premiere, producer Nate Moore gave an update on the Wakanda series. Unfortunately, it would seem the show is still quite a ways off:

Because of the amount of time and attention that went into this film, and frankly the Ironheart show, that is probably not as far along as people want it to be, but there are certainly great ideas that we’re still talking to Ryan about. So, we’ll see how far we can get with it.

    Nate Moore

The good news is that Coogler is putting a lot of time and care into the projects in front of him. The downside is that fans will have to wait much longer for anything else. That being said, Moore does not say the projects, or project, are dead. So, there’s no reason to panic yet.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on November 11th. Ironheart lands in late 2023.
