‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Set Photo Reveals a Potentially Shocking Development

UPDATE: Some great detective work by one of our Patreon mods has turned up the fact that the sign on the church has read “March 15, 2020” since June 2022. It seems likely that the sign is not part of the shoot and does not indicate the series will take place in 2020.

Photos and videos from the Harlem set of Daredevil: Born Again have been coming fast and furious and clues about the series have come a long with them. A 70s-set flashback will explore a time in the life of a young Wilson Fisk, for example, and now a new set photo reveals yet another time period that will be explored.

Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock was spotted on the set of Daredevil: Born Again and appeared to be following a young woman down a street of brownstones. A church on the block was also part of the set and a photo shared by Daredevil Updates shows that the bulletin board on the front t if the building dates the scene in 2020!

Assuming there’s no mistake or trickery here, the date indicates that at least part of Daredevil: Born Again is set during the five years between Thanos’ snap and the Hulk’s snapback. Fans have theorized that the show may be set during that time period after learning that Deborah Ann Woll and Eldon Henson weren’t returning for the show. Being set in 2020 would allow for an easy explanation for the absence of their characters: they were Snapped!

The events of Season 3 of Daredevil are widely believed to have taken place before the Battle of Wakanda shown in Avengers: Endgame so to date, Matt Murdock’s experiences during the 5 year Blip have yet to be explored. Could the entire show be set during that time period? It’s unlikely mostly because of the rumored connection between the events of Echo, which is known to take place in the present day of the MCU, and Daredevil: Born Again.

More than likely, the scene is one of a series of flashbacks that will be used to fill in blanks in what the audience knows about Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk as they begin their MCU journey together.

The Harlem set of Daredevil: Born Again has been fruitful for fans who love to study set photos. A 70’s set flashback scene revealed that the series will be revisiting Wilson Fisk’s younger days, an era that was already well-fleshed out in Netflix’s Daredevil. Now, the same set has been transformed into the MCU’s present day and star Charlie Cox has been spotted walking along a sidewalk in front of some brownstones. Thrilling stuff!

There’s absolutely no context to these shots at the moment but fans can’t get enough pictures of Cox. Cox was also captured this week sharing a scene with new co-star Nikki M. James likely following a court case.

The plot of the 18-episode series is being kept under wraps but it’s known that Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, for a portion of the series. He’ll join Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio as stars who made the jump from the Netflix series. Eldon Henson and Deborah Ann Woll are not expected to return and Ayelet Zurer, who played Vanessa Fisk, will not return as Sandrine Holt has now been cast in the role.

First ‘Captain America 4’ BTS Pics Feature Anthony Mackie on Location

With all the attention focused on Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order quietly began production on location in Atlanta this week. The first set photos from the film show Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson visiting a West Virginia diner.

The new film will be the fourth installment in the Captain America franchise and the first big screen outing for Mackie’s Wilson since he took on the mantle in the Disney Plus streaming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Rumors have the plot of the film revolving around the discovery of Adamantium on the body of the Celestial Tiamut and a world going to war over the precious resource.

The photos seem to show work being completed on an unfinished set of a location called Smyth’s Diner which is a location that has been visited in the pages of Marvel Comics in 1991’s The Adventures of Captain America #2.

Location filming is expected to continue throughout the week and expect Mackie to be joined by co-star Danny Ramirez who will be reprising his role and Joaquin Torres and suiting up as the Falcon.

Captain America: New World Order was co-written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson and will be directed by Julius Onah. The film is currently slated for a May 3, 2024 theatrical release.

  • More Set Photos Confirm 1970’s Setting of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Flashback, Retelling of a Key Character’s Origin

More Set Photos Confirm 1970’s Setting of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Flashback, Retelling of a Key Character’s Origin

Earlier set photos from Daredevil: Born Again indicated that the upcoming Disney Plus streaming series will involve a flashback but without much context, fans were left to speculate blindly. Thankfully, a new series of set photos has come along that may clarify what was being shot today in Harlem.

The new photos, courtesy of Joseph Adames, come with the claim that flashback, set in 1970’s Hell’s Kitchen, features a young Wilson Fisk mixing it up with a group of bullies.

Fans had all day to concoct wild theories about how the young actor seen in previous set photos might be playing Matt Murdock but as it turns out, the much more sensible conclusion that he is playing a young Wilson Fisk checks out.

Fans of the Netflix Daredevil series will undoubtedly remember Cole Jensen’s performance as a young, traumatized Wilson Fisk. In that series, Fisk was born sometime in the early 1960s and murdered his father at some point in the early 1970s. It’ll be interesting to see if Daredevil: Born Again adds to that origin tale of Fisk or if they retell it as star Charlie Cox has indicated the new series may choose to do with some bits and pieces of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s lives.

Breaking: Victoria Alonso Leaves Marvel Studios

In a stunning move, executive Victoria Alonso has parted ways with Marvel Studios. According to THR, Alonso’s final day with the studio was Friday, March 17th and no reason has been disclosed for her move.

Alonso has served as an executive producer on dozens of Marvel Studios’ projects dating back to 2012’s The Avengers. In 2021, she assumed the position of president of physical, postproduction, VFX and animation at the studio and has taken the lead in the studio’s push to increase diversity in its projects in front of and behind the camera.

The move ends a 17-year career for Alonso who began working as the studios’s chief of visual effects and post-production in 2006. She also co-produced the studio’s first film, Iron Man, in 2008.

  • New ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Set Photos Turn Back the Clock

New ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Set Photos Turn Back the Clock

Principal photography on Daredevil: Born Again is well underway in and around New York City with various parts of different neighborhoods being transformed into key settings for the streaming series. Last week, pictures of a corner store in Harlem being remodeled as Hell’s Kitchen and Delicatessen made their way online and now filming has begun at that location and revealed it is part of a flashback sequence.

The location stretches down the block a bit and judging by the cars on set, seems to be set in the late 1970s or later. As seen below, a stack of newspapers on set are dated November 1, 1999 but while it’s tempting to believe that’s the time period for this setting, those are actually real newspapers. Valley News is a publication that serves the New Hampshire and Vermont region and the Patriots did really beat the Cardinals 27-3 on October 31, 1999 so they may serve only as a prop and the date may not come into play in the series. There’s also an issue with the fact that the posters seen on the store are all classic 70s posters (the Raid poster, for example, is from 1978), making the newspaper anachronistic.

Given the difficulty in nailing down the exact time period when this scene is set, it’s all but impossible to determine exactly what might be going on without further context. However, star Charlie Cox indicated in a 2022 interview that as part of Daredevil: Born Again being a “whole new deal”, the series may include a retelling of some events that had previously been seen onscreen in Netflix’s Daredevil series.

What’s great about that is that we potentially get to tell some of the stories over and over again, in the same way that they do in the comics. Every now and then they start back in the beginning of Murdock’s journey as a little boy and they tell the whole origin story again, so maybe we’ll get to do that. I don’t know.

    Charlie Cox

Could that be what’s going on here? This scene looks to be set in the late 1970s. In the canon established through the Netflix series, Matt Murdock was 30-32 years old, meaning he was born sometime in the mid-1980s. That Daredevil series was set in 2015 while the MCU is currently set in 2025-2026 depending on what project is being viewed (Cox’s most recent appearance in She-Hulk is widely believed to be set in 2025). With the big-time jump, that would make Matt 40-42 years old in the present day of the MCU. If Matt was out and about in the 1970s, he’d be pushing 50 years old in present day.

It’s also possible that it’s not Murdock’s story being told at all but another of the series’ main characters: Wilson Fisk. The casting of Sandrine Holt as Vanessa Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again has raised some questions about just what parts of the Netflix Daredevil series are being considered canon in the MCU. It’s possible, given the length of the series, that Marvel Studios may be choosing to retell the origin of Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock for the MCU.

  • Disney May Have Offered a Glimpse at Marvel Studios Reshuffled Streaming Slate

Disney May Have Offered a Glimpse at Marvel Studios Reshuffled Streaming Slate

Bob Iger‘s return to Disney has thrown a monkey wrench into Marvel Studios streaming plans. Iger has forced the studio to rethink the pacing of its streaming releases, rethink its budget and generally slow the big wheel that includes production, marketing and release. So slowed down has it become that with a quarter of 2023 almost gone, audiences don’t know when they might catch Secret Invasion, the first of the studio’s streaming offerings. While it’s likely to be a while before Disney gives in on that end, they may have given fans something to chew on.

It was recently discovered that an official Disney site that features upcoming streaming series had removed date windows from every Marvel Studios project and replaced them with “Coming Soon.” This is true for every project listed on the site from Secret Invasion to the animated Spider-Man: Freshman Year. In doing so, the order of the studio’s live-action projects were also reshuffled and that reshuffling may have given fans a glimpse into the order they should expect the studio’s live-action offerings.

Secret Invasion, which has recently been rumored to debut in June, will take the lead as expected. It’s been expected for some time now that Season 2 of Loki would follow the spy thriller but beyond that, the slate has been up in the air with Echo’s showrunner confirming a delay, word that Ironheart and Agatha: Coven of Chaos were pushed to 2024 and the lengthy production schedule of Daredevil: Born Again. While there’s no confirmation and no guarantee, it’s possible that the official Disney site rearranged the projects in anticipation of a coming announcement and put at least the live-action projects in order of expected release.

Should that be the case (and I can’t state strongly enough that this is JUST A GUESS), Secret Invasion looks to be followed in 2023 by Loki Season 2 and Echo. Just what changed behind the scenes to make Echo releasable in 2023 remains to be seen, but it would represent a significant shift in thinking should that series make a late 2023 debut on Disney Plus. With those three live-action projects taking up the last half of 2023, it would seem that Ironheart would kick off 2024 and be followed by Agatha: Coven of Chaos and then at least part of Daredevil: Born Again. Given the mandate to spread releases out a bit more, it would seem tough for all 18 episodes of Born Again to be released in 2024 but there’s no reason they all have to, either.

There’s currently no hard evidence to support this but, to some extent, it fits some of the rumors making their way around (both publicly and privately) about the current and very, very tentative live-action slate of Marvel Studios streaming projects. In the past, I’d have only given this a 33% chance of working out but in the current climate, 25% would be generous. However, it’s certainly worth pointing out so we can all kee an eye on things.

  • Ryan Coogler Rumored to Be Developing Animated Wakanda Series

Ryan Coogler Rumored to Be Developing Animated Wakanda Series

Following the success of 2018’s Black Panther, Ryan Coogler agreed to a 5-year exclusive deal with Disney in 2021. As part of that deal, Coogler not only developed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for Marvel Studios, but also started development on multiple series spinning out of the Black Panther franchise. The first of those series, Ironheart, was originally set to debut in 2023 but Bob Iger’s return to Disney has put some of Marvel Studios projects on pause as they rethink their release strategy. Coogler’s other projects remain in development, however, including a series believed to star Danai Gurira as Okoye and a project being called The Golden City. While no timetable has been revealed for these projects, some interesting new information about The Golden City has come to light.

During The Hot Mic Podcast, YouTuber Jeff Sneider shared an intriguing rumor which indicated that The Golden City is being developed as an animated series. At this point, it’s entirely unclear what the project might be about though The Golden City is clearly a reference to Birnin Zana, the capital city of Wakanda. One possibility that an animated project might offer Marvel Studios is the opportunity to tell quite a bit of the history of Wakanda without having to create multiple extravagant sets.

While Marvel Studios is developing multiple animated projects, their status as canonical to the events of the MCU aren’t all clear. At this point, only the events of What If…? are confirmed to be canon, though they clearly take place throughout the Multiverse and not in the “Sacred Timeline” where other MCU projects are set. Should The Golden City by canon, it may be the first animated series to be set in that “Sacred Timeline.”

  • Steven Yeun on What Drew Him to His Mysterious ‘Thunderbolts’ Role

Steven Yeun on What Drew Him to His Mysterious ‘Thunderbolts’ Role

Marvel Studios Thunderbolts is set to serve as a sequel of sorts to 2021’s Black Widow while also introducing one of Marvel Comics most powerful characters: Sentry. Though the details of the plot remain a tightly kept secret, director Jake Schreier‘s film will see Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s team of kinda-sorta heroes, led by Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and, maybe, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, take on some dangerous mission for the CIA director. Many fans believe that mission will involve having to take on Sentry and many fans believe Sentry will be played by Steven Yeun, who recently joined the project.

While Yeun wasn’t giving any hints on who he would be playing in the Phase 5 film, he did have quite a bit to say about why he was joining the project. While an MCU role is “the dream” for many actors in the business, for Yeun, it was to reunite with his pal Schreier, with whom he worked on the upcoming Netflix series, Beef, that drew him to Thunderbolts.

I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list. It was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.

    Steven Yeun

It sounds as though Schreier may have been the one to pitch Yeun’s involvement in Thunderbolts and if he is indeed playing Sentry, that Schreier believes the actor was the right guy for what the MCU’s version of the character will be.

  • Marvel Studios Cracking Down on ‘Ant-Man 3’ Script Leaker

Marvel Studios Cracking Down on ‘Ant-Man 3’ Script Leaker

It’s not been easy for a studio like Marvel Studios which has been well-known for keeping secrets as of late. Almost every other day, it seems like some new leaker finds his way online with information on projects that haven’t even been announced yet or castings that should not see the light of day until the actual release. Yet, there have been some even bigger actions such as the recent leak of the entire Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania script before the film even hit theaters.

It seems Marvel Studios is also no longer sitting idly by, as there have been rumblings of several actions to avoid the number of leaks collected throughout the pandemic. The longer it took for productions to hit theaters, the wilder the theories and rumors got creating a perfect storm dragging down some of the projects due to high expectations and a two-year vacancy. Now, it seems Marvel Studios has enacted a DMCA takedown notice on Reddit.

As the script ended up getting shared in January, it landed on Google which led to a copyright infringement move by Marvel Studios to get it off the internet as fast as possible. Google did remove the content but their next target was Reddit. The post got taken down before even Reddit could react, but they are still actively looking to identify the culprit.

The only issue is that it was enacted through the /u/MSSMods account, which was a shared moderator account for Marvel Studios Spoilers; a quite famous hot spot for the latest leaks and news. They are still actively looking for whoever and it seems that r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers has been shut down due to legal actions. It’s unclear what the future might have in store but one thing is for sure: Marvel Studios is not going to just let anyone get away with it moving forward.
