  • M’Baku Actor Winston Duke Given “Expanded Role” in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

M’Baku Actor Winston Duke Given “Expanded Role” in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever resumes filming after star Letitia Wright’s injury and other delays related to COVID-19, a recent report suggests that some potentially major changes have been made to the film during production.

While plenty of attention has been on Wright‘s Shuri throughout the film’s development and production for numerous reasons, it looks like actor Winston Duke has possibly had quite an interesting journey with the sequel’s production as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that Duke, who plays Jabari Tribe leader M’Baku, has negotiated a hefty pay raise due to his reported expanded role within Wakanda Forever and perhaps the Black Panther franchise at large.

While there is no information on just how “expanded” Duke’s role actually is, the news is sure to bring up both old and new theories on where the follow-up to the extremely beloved and successful Black Panther plans to go after Chadwick Boseman‘s tragic death in 2020 and recent controversies surrounding the sequel.

Despite the delays, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still on track for its scheduled Nov. 11, 2022 release date.

  • Tom Holland Hopes To Return as Spider-Man “Again and Again and Again”

Tom Holland Hopes To Return as Spider-Man “Again and Again and Again”

Spider-Man: No Way Home has become one of the highest grossing films of all time and the highest-rated live-action Spider-Man film ever but, without the work of Tom Holland, it wouldn’t have happened. Following Spider-Man: Far From Home, the relationship between Marvel Studios and Sony was as dead as Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May until Holland swung in and saved the deal. Now it seems the relationship between the two studios is stronger than ever, with both Amy Pascal and Kevin Fiege confirming that work on a fourth collaboration is already underway. And if that wasn’t enough to excite fans, Holland himself added a little more enthusiasm to the mix today.

Rotten Tomatoes awarded the highly-regarded film three of their Golden Tomato awards in 2021 and Holland thanked the site in a video. During that video, Holland expressed not only his thanks, but also his desire to “do it again and again and again” and followed up by saying “we’ll see you soon.”

Fans were rightfully trepidatious about Holland’s return to the role as his time on the press rounds for the film was filled with contradictory conversation about his willingness to return to the film. However, the events of the film leave the character in the perfect place for an all-new, all-different sort of trilogy that will allow Holland to put a new spin on the character. With development on fourth installment already underway, it might not be too long before we hear news about a potential release date.

  • Marvel Studios Officially Reveals Where ‘Eternals’ Fits on the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Officially Reveals Where ‘Eternals’ Fits on the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Eternals made its streaming debut today on Disney Plus and with the release came an update to the MCU’s chronological viewing order. While the film made it clear that the events set in the “present day” timeline took place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the update to the app has now placed it more precisely.

It’s now clear that Eternals lands between the events of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings and the Christmas-centric Hawkeye. Given that the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home were shown to take place just before and during Hawkeye, it’s probably safe to assume that Eternals also took place before the big events of No Way Home as well. Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes before references to Eternals make their way into Phase 4 and 5 projects; given that a Celestial was frozen as he broke free from the Earth’s core and another appeared in the sky, it’s only a matter of time before we start hearing about those events in other projects.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney Plus in both widescreen and IMAX enhanced formats.

  • Sebastian Stan Has “No Clue” What’s Next for Bucky

Sebastian Stan Has “No Clue” What’s Next for Bucky

Marvel Studios streaming series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier allowed Sebastian Stan to showcase his talents and really dive deep into who Bucky Barnes was. By the time the season was over, Bucky had seemingly moved on from the haunting memories of his time as The Winter Soldier and was, for the first time in nearly 100 years, free to move on and purse a life of his own choosing.

Like many of the other characters from the Disney Plus streaming series, it’s clear that there’s another chapter in Bucky’s story waiting to be told, but it isn’t clear when that chapter will be told. While it makes sense the Stan would reprise the character in Captain America 4, there’s hardly been any word on that film, much less its cast. With so many people wondering when we’d see Bucky next and no clear answer, Collider went right to the source, asking Stan when he’d next appear in the MCU during an interview for his next film The 355.

I don’t know. Per usual, I can’t answer that question. I have no clue, but look, I think it’s sort of about seeing what’s next for him, right? To some extent, the show, I felt, really graduated him to another level of experience and taking on his past a lot better and gave him another sense of place and sense of family that he’s found there with Sam. So he’s in a pretty good spot right now. I’d be curious to see what the next interesting thing that we could tell with him would be, and as you well know, that is above my pay grade. There are far wiser men and women who are making those decisions.

Stan did go on to promise that Bucky was not among the multitude of rumored cameos in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Animated projects aside, it doesn’t seem as though Stan has been a part of any of Marvel Studios projects that have wrapped recently or are still filming, meaning it might be until 2023 before the live-action return of Bucky Barnes. But as much as Stan loves playing the character and as much as fans love him, there’s certainly a future in store for him.

‘Hawkeye’ From Page to Screen: Episode 6

With the finale in the rearview mirror, Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye series has come to a close. Each week we have looked at ways in which the live-action series has adapted parts of the Matt Fraction and David Aja Hawkeye comic book run. Between the origins of Lucky the Pizza Dog, Clint’s capture by the Tracksuit Mafia, Episode 3’s car chase and trick arrows, the connection between the live-action LARPERs and the comics’ neighbors, and Kingpin’s role, the series has covered a lot of ground. Looking at the finale episode of Hawkeye, a few things stand out as having strong ties to the source material: (1) the importance of Kate taking on the “Hawkeye” mantle; (2) the six-day Christmas-themed adventure; and (3) Kate’s parents’ role in the organized crime that the Hawkeyes go up against.

    Hawkeye and Hawkeye

    Marvel Studios’ ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 6
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 6

A clear goal of the live-action Hawkeye series was to introduce and establish Kate Bishop as the next “Hawkeye.” While the show follows Kate from her pre-superhero days through her first adventure with Clint, in the Hawkeye comic she is already established as Hawkeye alongside Clint’s own Hawkeye persona. While the series finale ended just shy of officially referring to Kate as Hawkeye, it’s almost certain that the next time we see Hailee Steinfeld’s character there won’t be any question about her superhero identity.

The live-action and comic Hawkeye stories also both seem to have built a greater appreciation for Kate’s character over time. While both the series and comic are premised on Clint Barton’s story, Kate is a major character throughout his story. The Hawkeye series of course ends in a way that reflects Kate’s new role in Clint’s life and as a hero. The Hawkeye comic ends with a similar acknowledgment of the significance of the relationship between the two. On its final page, it also calls the Hawkeye comic run a “Clint Barton/Kate Bishop Comic Book,” giving further credit to Kate being deserving of the Hawkeye mantle on the same level as Clint.

    Six Days of Christmas

    Marvel Studios’ ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 6

Hawkeye made itself a Christmas show, and it made sure you knew how Christmas-y it was as often as it could. The series was clever to use its six episodes to cover the six days leading up to Christmas, which served as a countdown for Clint to get home to his family for the holiday. Not only did the second issue of Hawkeye explore a heavy Christmas theme, it also specifically looked at the six days of Clint’s life during that time. The comic version of the six days of Christmas had cameos from Tony Stark, Wolverine, and Spider-Man, which obviously the series did not. But it did heavily feature Kate, as well as the Tracksuit Mafia like the live-action series, did. In Hawkeye, the six days were presented out of order, and that added to the intrigue of the narrative––it’s interesting to think about how the Hawkeye series would have played out if its reveals and investigative themes were similarly distorted in order.

Both six-day stretches end with Clint having company for Christmas. In the Hawkeye series, Clint makes it home to Missouri with Kate to spend Christmas with his wife and kids. Comic Clint has a much different family life than MCU Clint, though. He is divorced with no children and is living alone. At the end of his six days, a family that lives in his apartment building comes to keep him company in a warming moment for the self-deprecating and down-on-his-luck archer.

    Bishop Family Values

    Marvel Studios’ ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 6
    ‘Hawkeye’ #22 (2015)

One of the major reveals of the Hawkeye series was that Kate’s mother Eleanor Bishop was working for Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, and her ties to New York City’s criminal underground was essentially the catalyst for the entire series. In the comics, Kate Bishop’s mother is the one who is presumed dead, and her father Derek Bishop raised her. In the live-action series, of course, the parents’ statuses are reversed, but in both iterations, they made deals with Kingpin among other criminal figures and organizations that ultimately impacted Kate and her safety.

In any event, the Bishops were a wealthy family which gave Kate the status as a socialite on top of being a superhero. As a result, we get to see Kate bring Clint to a fancy event in a skyscraper in order to investigate some criminal activity in both the comic and the series.

  • RUMOR: Gael Garcia Bernal to Play Jack Russell in ‘Werewolf By Night’

RUMOR: Gael Garcia Bernal to Play Jack Russell in ‘Werewolf By Night’

Early last month, Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal joined the cast of Marvel Studios Halloween Special, Werewolf By Night. At the time of his casting, it was widely assumed that Bernal would be playing Jake Gomez, the most recent Marvel Comics’ character to carry the burden of lycanthropy. A new rumor from The Illuminerdi contradicts that report and indicates that Bernal is instead playing Jack Russell, the original Werewolf By Night.

In the comics, lycanthropy has been part of Russell’s family line dating back to 1795 when his ancestor, Grigori Russoff first became a werewolf after being bitten by one following a battle with Dracula, of course. The curse of the werewolf was passed through generations, with some assistance from the Darkhold (which now plays a prominent part in the MCU), until it manifested in Russell. Over time, Russell used his powers as a werewolf to battle evil, serving at one point as part of the Midnight Sons.

It’s worth noting that the Illuminderi’s report indicates that another “by nighter”, Vampire By Night, could be joining the party in Werewolf By Night. That character, Nina Price, is the niece of Russell and a vampire/werewolf hybird. Price carried the lycanthropy in her DNA and was further changed after being, of course, bitten by a vampire.

Werewolf By Night is set to go into production in February and is being billed as a “one-off movie” for Disney Plus. It is expected to complete filming by the end of March and ready to stream for Spooky Season 2022.

  • Marvel Studios Decanonizes ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ in ‘Hawkeye’ Finale

Marvel Studios Decanonizes ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ in ‘Hawkeye’ Finale

The writing was on the wall. Our first clues came in Episode 4 and those clues allowed for a reasonable claim to be made that Laura Barton was, at one time, an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.; And now, following the events of the season finale of Hawkeye, it’s been made very clear: Laura Barton is S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent 19, aka Mockingbird.

Since Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans have theorized that Laura might once have been an Agent. The finale of Hawkeye put any doubt to rest by revealing that the watch fans have been speculating about since Episode 1 did, in fact, belong to her. The back watch, which Clint indicated was “tied to her identity”, bore a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo and the number 19. As established in the comics, Agent 19 was the designation of Barbara “Bobbi” Morse, a level 6 agent who also went by the code name Mockingbird. Morse went on to marry Clint, joined the Avengers and founded the West Coast Avengers before “dying” and then playing a key role in the Secret Invasion event. In the 2010 series, Hawkeye and Mockingbird, it was also revealed that, with the help of Nick Fury, Morse faked her death, left S.H.I.E.L.D, had her files classified and went off the grid for 8 years before her past with Barton brought her back into action.

It’s not much of a stretch, given the emphasis placed on the watch and its ties to someone’s identity who Clint says has “been out of the game for a while”, that the MCU’s Laura Barton once went by a different name and similarly relied on the help of Nick Fury, who we know helped set up Clint’s family with a nice farm house. Laura was Agent 19; Agent 19 was Mockingbird; Mockingbird was Bobbi Morse; “Laura” was Bobbi Morse.

Of course, this creates quite the conundrum. Over two seasons of the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Bobbi Morse was played by Adrianne Palicki. Her Morse had no ties to Clint Barton and has never appeared in or been referenced in any other MCU projects. The character was supposed to co-lead an AoS spinoff, Marvel’s Most Wanted, but that project was canceled in 2016. Marvel Studios with no hope of being picked up down the road.F

While fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are scrambling to come up ways to explain it (Palicki’s Morse wasn’t called Mockingbird in the show, Laura hasn’t been called Mockingbird either, etc.) It seems incredibly unlikely that Marvel Studios would have both a Bobbi Morse and a separate character who goes by both of Morse’s aliases, Agent 19 and Mockingbird. In almost all cases, the simplest explanation is almost always the best one and, in this case, the simplest explanation is that the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are not canon, at least not within the so-called Sacred Timeline. It is far, far more likely that, like the events of Spider-Man or The Amazing Spider-Man, the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took place in another universe and that in the Sacred Timeline, Laura Barton EXACTLY who Hawkeye told us she was: Agent 19, aka Mockingbird, ask Barbara “Bobbi” Morse.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Finale Primer

    ‘Hawkeye’ Finale Primer

The latest episode of Hawkeye was the most revealing one yet. Kate and Yelena had a great girls’ night leading to Kate finding out that Yelena was hired to kill Clint…but by who? This question is answered in the final minute of the show: Eleanor Bishop! Clint reveals to Maya that he is Ronin and that he was tipped off by an informant, hired by her boss, who was revealed to be Kingpin. The informant is no other than Kazi. Maya learns this quickly and this might result in a fight in this last episode.

Some of the biggest things that haveto happen in this next episode are Kate confronting her mom about being essentially the bad guy in this whole thing. And then we have the Kingpin issue at hand; he is obviously going to be a problem for Maya. We also still have Yelena coming after Clint. And he has to get home for Christmas. All of these things have to wrap up seeing that this is the last episode.

    Arlyn’s Assumptions

How Spider-Man: No Way Home's Ending Connects to Hawkeye's Finale

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we see Peter swinging over the Rink at Rockefeller Center, the location where the big, final fight is supposed to happen in Hawkeye. As cool as it would be to see Spidey join the fight, if he is in the show for too long it would take the focus off of Clint and Kate’s stories. Now that Maya knows that Kazi helped get her father killed, she’ll be looking to put a hurting on him. She will also want to get back at Kingpin, but I don’t think that Kingpin is going to make too big of an impact in the finale because the last thing he wants to do is be openly associated with criminals. I think he’ll be back in a bigger role in another series. Eleanor is going to end up in jail leaving Kate all by herself and, after everything Kate has done for Clint, I think she’ll be joining him as he makes it home just in time for the Barton family Christmas.

The final episode of Hawkeye streams tomorrow!

  • ‘Hawkeye’ From Page to Screen: Episode 5

‘Hawkeye’ From Page to Screen: Episode 5

The Hawkeye series finally introduced none other than Kingpin at the very end of its penultimate episode, after quite some time teasing the villain’s introduction. While Kingpin did not play a particularly central role in the Matt Fraction and David Aja My Life as a Weapon comic, it’s clear that his role in both the comics and show has some major overlaps worth exploring. Is the Kingpin, better known as Wilson Fisk, just the man behind the curtain, or is he more involved than it seems?

In the comic he is heavily involved in three major areas of interest: (1) he’s at the top of the Tracksuit Mafia food chain; (2) he was at a black-market auction to buy incriminating evidence on Clint Barton; and (3) he was involved in hiring an assassin to kill Clint Barton. This article will explore each of these elements in turn and how they relate to the Hawkeye series.

The Guy Clint’s Been Worried About

One thing we know about Kingpin in every adaptation is that he is at the top of the New York City criminal organization pyramid. We know little so far from the Hawkeye series, but in the comics, Kingpin is a general presence that overshadows much of the crime syndicates below him. In both the series and the comic, Clint is hesitant to work with Kate or go about his general business, not because of the Tracksuit Mafia, but because of who they work for. In the series, Clint tells Kate that they do not want to get too involved, because they could run into the “Big Guy”. In the comics, Kingpin delivers a speech to a cohort of villains that “Clint Barton must die,” for interfering with their plans. The Tracksuit Mafia makes it pretty clear the Clint that they work for someone much more powerful. Later on, it’s obvious that Fisk is at least one of who they are referring to. As seen below, the comics make it much more explicit than the Disney+ series does.

    ‘Hawkeye’ #8 (2013)

    The Auction

Curiously, both the comics and the series feature a black market auction for Barton and Avengers-related items. In the series, of course, we see people bid on the Ronin sword, but the Tracksuit Mafia break into the event to grab the still-mysterious Avengers-related watch before it goes up for sale. While Clint tells Kate that the watch could blow the cover of his friend, in the comics a tape of Clint assassinating targets on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D. goes up for auction. Kate manages to buy the tape – in disguise as Madame Masque – and, you can guess, Kingpin is not too happy.

    ‘Hawkeye’ #4 (2012)

In the series, the first episode shows Jack and Armand Duquesne at the said auction that featured several items found from the destroyed Avengers compounds, including Ronin’s sword, suit, and the mysterious watch. While we did not see Kingpin physically at the auction, we know the Tracksuit Mafia—that he controls—broke in to steal the watch. As little as we know about the watch, it’s clear it might have the same effect on the owner and Clint’s tape in the comics did on him.

    ‘Hawkeye’ #4 (2012)
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Hawkeye’ Episode 1

    The Assassin

In the comics, Kingpin is one member of a group, including the Tracksuit Mafia, that decides to hire an assassin to kill Clint Barton. He hires Kazimierz Kazimierczak in the comics, who is otherwise known as the Clown. The Kazi in the series definitely strays from the Kazimierz in the comics, so we have not seen any elements of the “Clown” at this point. But in the series, Episode 5 tells us that Kate’s mother Eleanor hired Yelena Belova to kill Clint. Shortly after, we find out that Eleanor appears to be working with Kingpin, begging the question as to whether he was involved in the live-action scheme to take down Clint Barton.

While Kingpin’s introduction was fairly small in Hawkeye Episode 5, it’s worth noting the connections he has to the Fraction-Aja comics. We’ll find out more about Kingpin’s involvement in the Hawkeye finale on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, when it airs on Disney+.

  • “Nothing has Been Determined”: Sony CEO Speaks Out on Tom Holland’s Future as Spider-Man

“Nothing has Been Determined”: Sony CEO Speaks Out on Tom Holland’s Future as Spider-Man

Last night marked the red carpet premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home, meaning the stars and Hollywood suits were out in full force. Among them was Sony CEO Tom Rothman, who as Chair of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, has overseen the partnership between Sony and Marvel Studios that has led to MCU-set Spidey films like No Way Home.

The collaboration between the two studios has been wildly successful and with the conclusion of the Spidey high school-set trilogy, fans are eager to know if Tom Holland will be back in the role once his contract is up. A couple of weeks back, Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal, who has worked on all 3 Holland Spidey films, told Fandango that a deal to keep collaboration had, in fact, been reached. When asked to confirm or deny Pascal’s comments last night, Rothman laughed and said:

“I will confirm that my dear sister-in-arms, Amy, is a very optimistic person. that’s what I will confirm. The reality is nothing is set. Nothing has been determined. But on the other hand, everything is still possible.”

Before concluding that portion of the interview, Rothman added, “Hope springs eternal. We’ll see.” Speaking as the CEO of a company, Rothman is smart not to give anything away until the ink is dry on all the contracts. Will there be more Spider-Man movies? Always. Will Marvel Studios and Sony continue to collaborate to make them? It sure seems like it based on everything we’ve heard during press junkets the past few weeks. However, we recently saw the Sony/Marvel Studios deal come to an “end” before being saved by last minute efforts by Holland, so Rothman’s totally in line here with his response. With everything on the table, however, it’s encouraging to think about another decade or so of the studios working together to bring Spidey to the big (and small) screen.
