‘Masters of the Universe’s: Amazon Looking at Travis Knight to Lead the Way to Eternia

Bumblebee director Travis Knight is on the precipice of unlocking the gates of Castle Grayskull. According to a trade report, Knight is Amazon’s top choice to helm the long-gestating live-action Masters of the Universe film that would put Mattel’s He-Man on the big screen for the first time since 1987.

After Mattel debuted its Masters of the Universe toy line in 1982, Filmation produced He-Man & The Masters of the Universe, one of the decade’s most popular animated series. Though it only ran for two seasons, the property led to spinoffs, reboots, Dolph Lundgren‘s aforementioned film and revivals such as Kevin Smith’s Netflix series. The vast mythology of the franchise has expanded in other media as well, with multiple comic book series having been created over the past 40 years. The characters, locations and catchphrases are etched in the brains of children of the 80s and have taken on a new life through memes, providing Amazon with the opportunity to market Knight’s new film to a wide age range.

Amazon MGM studios has been in negotiations to acquire the rights to produce a live-action Masters of the Universe film since 2021 when Netflix bailed on their attempt to get one off the ground. That project was based off a script by David Callaham and Adam and Aaron Nee and it looks as though the new version will be getting a fresh script by Chris Butler. According to the trade report, Knight’s version will see a young Prince Adam sidelined on Earth for two decades before returning to Eternia to face off against Skeletor and find out that he does indeed have the power.

  • ‘Supergirl’ Star to Take Over as Teela in ‘Masters of the Universe: Revolution’

‘Supergirl’ Star to Take Over as Teela in ‘Masters of the Universe: Revolution’

It seems like Teela will be recast in the upcoming sequel season for Kevin Smith‘s legacy sequel of the Masters of the Universe franchise. He’s currently working on Masters of the Universe: Revolution but sadly it seems not everyone will return from the previous seasons. According to Deadline, Sarah Michelle Gellar will not return in the next entry

Instead, Supergirl star Melissa Benoist is taking over as the voice for Teela in Revolution. So far, Chris Wood, Mark Hamill, and William Shatner are the only confirmed cast for the next season. Though, we still don’t know who Shatner will play. We’ll see who else might join or take over as the series continues with a more technology versus magic focus.

Benoist shared the following statement on joining the project:

I jumped at the opportunity to work alongside my friend, Kevin Smith and join the Revolution family as another bold and fearless heroine. I look forward to sharing the next evolution of Teela’s story with fans

    Melissa Benoist

It’s great to see Benoist join another major project like this and it’ll be interesting to see if Teela might have a major role in Revolution. It’s a shame that Gellar isn’t returning and perhaps she’ll find time for a small role to still remain as part of the cast moving forward without having to invest too much time. Either way, we are also likely a step closer to seeing the new Masters of the Universe finally released if they are announcing cast members.

Netflix is Making a Live-Action ‘Masters of the Universe’ Film Starring Kyle Allen

Netflix has acquired a brand new live-action Masters of the Universe film. The past few years have seen Netflix develop multiple shows based on the ’80s line of toys and cartoons with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Masters of The Universe: Revelations, and He-Man and The Masters of The Universe, making this live-action reboot the fourth one under the company.

Kyle Allen, known for his work in West Side Story, has been chosen to play He-Man in the upcoming film. The project will be directed by the Nee Brothers who co-wrote the script alongside David Callaham, whose recent work includes Wonder Woman 1984 and Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings.

The project was previously in development at Sony with Noah Centineo attached to play He-Man. The executive producer of Mattel Films had this to say about the partnership between Mattel and Netflix.

“Masters of the Universe is an iconic property that shaped the imaginations of an entire generation of kids with the message of becoming the best version of yourself. With our partners at Netflix, we look forward to showing audiences that anything can happen in Eternia. • How ‘Masters of The Universe: Revelations’ Part 3 Could Introduce She-Ra

How ‘Masters of The Universe: Revelations’ Part 3 Could Introduce She-Ra

What was thought to be the final installment in the Revelations series has seemingly been flipped on its head, as the final moments unveiled the return of the leader of the Horde, Hordak. The Motherboard cult, which was teased in the first part, infects and mechanizes Skeletor to showcase the change in power moving forward. We don’t get his actual appearance in the series outside of a very familiar logo, but it does open up one question: are we going to see the arrival of She-Ra in the sequel?

It would certainly add some interesting drama for Princess Adora, better known as She-Ra and the twin sister of Prince Adam, to make a sudden return. She-Ra was kidnapped shortly after her birth by Hordak, who took her to the realm of Etheria and made her one of his underlings. Eventually, she would break free from his army to lead a group of rebels to fight the Horde to defeat him once and for all.

Many have become much more familiar with this story thanks to Netflix’s 2018 reboot of the series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. The series was an extensive retelling of the character and reimagined for a modern-day audience. It brought back Adora alongside her extensive supporting cast that includes Catra, Glimmer, Bow, Catra, Entrapta, and, of course, Hordak. However, that series was confirmed as a standalone story and doesn’t rely on any pre-existing Masters of The Universe lore.

It’s very likely Kevin Smith and his creative team will add their own spin to the story and build upon the revelations of the latest entry of the series. We don’t know if She-Ra and Hordak are a known presence in this take on the classic franchise. So, perhaps Adora is the revelation that the title is hinting at, as she helps Adam and Teela against this new threat aiming to end Grayskull once and for all.

  • ‘Masters Of The Universe: Revelations Part 2’ Ending Explained

‘Masters Of The Universe: Revelations Part 2’ Ending Explained

Kevin Smith brought us back to the world of Eternia. Masters of the Universe: Revelation resurrected the childhoods of an entire generation in a modernized take on the iconic franchise. It was assumed that the series would serve as a two-part finale to the original, as it would explore the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor. With the release of Part 2, Smith and his team may have found a way to catch us off guard and keep the door open for an additional part.

In the first part, we are introduced to a cult that follows the Motherboard and took over Snake Mountain after Skeletor’s dissapearance. The group rose to power following the loss of magic in Eternia through its tech-based sludge that upon ingestion would turn those who’ve consumed into weaponized cyborgs. They make their return in the final minutes of Part 2’s finale, as a bitter Skeletor attempts to destroy the Motherboard idol.

Yet, he ends up restrained by Trapjaw and Triklop, as the technological menace latches its wires into his body. As Skeletor is mechanized the idol projects a hologram revealing a familiar face to fans of the franchise. It signals the return of Hordak, leader of the Horde and Skeletons old master. He also was famous as the main antagonist in the spin-off series, She-Ra: Princess of Power, and continued that role in the 2018 remake.

The ending certainly hints at Revelations returning for a third part as Hordak may have set his sights on Castle Grayskull and the heroes that protect it. Skeletor was once a protégé of Horda, before eventually banishing him to the realm of Etheria so that he may begin his own conquest of Eternia. It’ll be interesting to see how the newly introduced Motherboard connects to his origin and what the future has in store for Skeletor as a minion of his former master.

  • The Odd Balance of Comedy and Drama in ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’

The Odd Balance of Comedy and Drama in ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’

The second part of Masters of the Universe: Revelation has finally found its way to Netflix. Kevin Smith‘s series acts as a continuation of the many story threads left behind in the original 1981 series, while also expanding upon the lore of the world of Eternia and the mysteries of the mystical power’s origin. The first part started on a surprising tragedy that pushed our characters to explore their place in a world without He-Man. Even in the second part, we get some strong character moments surrounding key characters of the original. In a colorful world like Eternia, drama is a surprising addition that adds a unique challenge to its goofier origins.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 Review -- Until Next Time!

The characters in this world have some rather curious naming conventions. Some of them even follow the same rule as Digimon‘s titular monster all ending their name the same way. Throughout the journey, we’ll meet He-Man, Beast Man, Moss-Man, Mer-Man, and many other “Man” named characters. One of our main antagonists, or technically protagonist, is unironically named Evil-Lyn, which she pokes fun at not being her choice.

It’s great that the show embraces these names that defined these characters in our childhood. It just accepts that this is their name and it makes sense within this universe rather than mocking every single character. Beast-Man especially gets a great character moment highlighted by his name in the final episodes. But I confess to sometimes chuckling when someone screams out the name Clamp-Champ in a dramatic fashion.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation part 2 release date, cast, synopsis, trailer and more

Still, it’s not the namings of these characters that make the drama not always land as strongly as it could. Skeletor has unleashed his power across the world early in the first episode of Part 2 and is, at long last, an actual threat to our heroes. Yet, as this is happening, we have characters like Fisto and Clamp-Champ making jokes during some high-stakes moments. So, when a character screams: “It’s time for this mist to meet my fist!” it takes away a bit from the actual tragedy that is unfolding for a bit.

The music sometimes also takes a more “heroic” direction with some jokes thrown in right before landing on a rather tragic moment. We have burned corpses on the ground mere minutes after a joke was made. Even as the sequence starts focusing more on the drama of how helpless our heroes are and building tension, Skeletor throws out another pun to de-escalate it. It’s not technically an issue and Even with more drama added in, the expansion of the once more kid-friendly cartoon still tries to keep some of the goofier elements alive, but that seems to be at a constant struggle with the more serious additions.

Mark Hamill se luce como SkeleGod en el primer tráiler de Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 | Código Espagueti

It doesn’t downplay the storytelling at play here and some of the deeper character moments hit quite hard. Sometimes it just feels like the show could’ve done with one or two jokes less, or at least aged up some of the humor alongside the drama. At the end of the day, it’s subjective if the humor and drama hit the right balance for you. It just didn’t quite hit the mark all the time, but I will say the second season ends on a high note that makes up for some of the goofier moments earlier on in the second part. Here’ shopping that momentum is carried over into the third.

  • REVIEW: ‘Masters Of The Universe: Revelations’ Part 2

REVIEW: ‘Masters Of The Universe: Revelations’ Part 2

The return to Eternia came just a few months ago in Masters of The Universe: Revelations. The series caught many off guards as it began with the apparent demise of not just Skeletor, but the champion of Castle Greyskull, He-Man. Many were upset with this, expecting their childhood hero in all his glory, but this isn’t the “He-Man show”-it was literally in the title! This is a show about the greatest warriors in the universe and the second part of Kevin Smith’s epic conclusion should give fans everything they wanted and more.

The most attractive aspect of the show is how it’s brought to life. Each episode is excellently animated, specifically in the fight scenes. Each fight is meticulously put together for a dynamic and riveting effect. This is one of those cases where a live-action adaption just couldn’t live up to the capabilities of animation; with so many different characters with different abilities, the sky is the limit here in terms of creativity and they use it.

Right off the bat, the show is able to improve on many of its characters. Teela, for example, is much more focused and developed this time around. The voice cast is one of the series strongest aspects as everyone is quite perfectly cast, especially the villains. Mark Hammil’s Skeletor is absolutely perfect casting, Hamill is able to juggle a threatening presence as Skelegod but still keep the campy charm the characters always had. The shows willingness to take risks with its characters, specifically Evil-Lyn and Teela, is what keeps it so interesting. With so many characters, Revelations finds a way to give everyone a part to play. Even the smallest and oddest characters in Eternia get a spot to shine, and MOTU sure does have a lot of oddballs.

One of the biggest things that will please longtime fans is how part two utilizes He-Man. By that I mean He-Man is actually a major character. While it’s great to see many smaller characters featured, the strides taken with He-Man fit so well with this modern interpretation of the series as they aren’t afraid to show the emotional side of He-Man: he isn’t the one-dimensional character we once knew and Chris Wood does an amazing job bringing this classic character into the 21st century.

The show does an excellent job closing out the chapter at a pretty good pace but there are a few issues that stick out with the way it reveals things. With only five episodes to wrap up such a sprawling story, big moments that feel as if they should’ve been given more attention move a bit too fast. A moment that feels like it should’ve been better showcased feels like it was just shoehorned in because they forgot to add it in the first part. The show pulls the rug out from under you halfway through part 2, and it’s probably one of the best creative choices the series has made; it just fits so well with how a certain character was developed in the first part of Revelations, and then it pays off perfectly.

Along with rushing of certain moments that aren’t treated as importantly as they should be, some of the dialogue is a bit odd and ill-placed. While this is a more adult take, targeting its original generation of viewers who’ve now grown up, we can do without the innuendos. While they aren’t common, they’re there in some pretty tense moments that take you out of the action.

Masters of The Universe: Revelations feels like a love letter to the franchise. It’s able to capture the original nature of the cartoon all while bringing it modernizing it to work with its now grown target audience and even newcomers to the franchise. The characters are fun and feature a brilliant voice cast with the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chris Wood, Mark Hammil, Lena Headley, Liam Cunningham, and Tiffany Smith. Part 2 streams on Netflix November 23rd.
