  • ‘Thunderbolts’ May Act as a Spinoff for ‘Black Widow’s Yelena Belova

‘Thunderbolts’ May Act as a Spinoff for ‘Black Widow’s Yelena Belova

Ever since the announcement came that Marvel Studios is working Thunderbolts, it had many wondering what the team of villains and anti-heroes might consist of. Surprisingly, it seems that Deadline’s Justin Kroll has just dropped the news on Matthew Belloni’s The Town podcast, as he reveals it’ll act as a sort of spinoff for Black Widow‘s Yelena Belova, which means Florence Pugh may be at the forefront of the project. According to Kroll, she’ll also likely lead “Marvel’s Suicide Squad” and potentially hints at John Walker and Zemo returning in the film.

[Florence Pugh] has got the Marvel superhero that’s already got a spin-off. Upcoming for her, actually, on that character is this Thunderbolts film, which is basically Marvel’s Suicide Squad. Hopefully, it has better results. But the concept is it’d be her leading the team of like Wyatt Russell’s [John Walker], Daniel Bruhl’s [Zemo], those anti-heroes that aren’t exactly good but aren’t exactly bad. So there’s that. And people seem to like the Yelena character.

Her role definitely raises some questions on what exactly this take of the Thunderbolts will look like. Florence Pugh is continuing to rise in her stardom so it seems like Marvel Studios is definitely not going to waste this opportunity to make her a strong focus on the MCU. There’s an interesting aspect that highlights her importance and potentially why she was part of the first film entry to kick off this new Multiverse Saga. We’ll see how this potentially will come together once more details on the film are revealed.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Star Teases His Character is “Really Important” to the DCEU’s Future

‘Blue Beetle’ Star Teases His Character is “Really Important” to the DCEU’s Future

There’s been some confusion on what the future has in store for the DC Extended Universe. The newly established Warner Bros. Discovery is leaving some rather harsh scars on its own production side with various projects being outright canceled or even taken down. Still, there are a few projects that might make it out, such as Xolo Maridueña‘s upcoming Blue Beetle film. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he was told how important Blue Beetle, whose secret identity is Jaime Reyes, will be for the DC Extended Universe.

He shared his experience after having a Zoom call with DC and what it was like getting another interview. “Why do these guys want to meet? What’s happening? I was so nervous. There’s so much riding on what they think about me.” He goes on to highlight what Walter Hamada, the president of DC Studios, told him about his character, as a way to also calm him down “Look Xolo. This role of Blue Beetle is going to be really important to this universe. We want to just make sure that whoever we go with is a real person and we’re not just hiring a face. It’s about more than what’s in front of the camera.”

It definitely sounds like Maridueña was chosen for that very reason, as he’ll bring a certain humanity to the role and the universe. Similar to how Spider-Man commonly becomes that human anchor for the Marvel universe. Luckily, it seems that the project is still moving forward as Warner Bros. Discovery still believes in the project. It’s unclear if Reyes’ role in the DCEU will also remain the same as they rewrite the next ten years for the franchise but it would be a shame not to make use of it.

  • New Line Cinema Teases the Return of ‘Friday the 13th’

New Line Cinema Teases the Return of ‘Friday the 13th’

In an age of legacy sequels and classic franchises getting a second chance, it always feels like a question of time before a franchise gets another reboot of some kind. Scream just recently managed to offer a new look at the iconic slasher Ghostface with a returning cast from the originals continuing the storyline. Now, it seems that New Line Cinema is teasing the return of another iconic horror icon.

IN a rather simple Instagram post, New Line Cinema has posted what looks like a phone notification hinting at Jason Voorhees, the iconic slasher lead of the Friday the 13th franchise, sending a message through Instagram. It’s difficult to not take this as a tease that a sequel of some kind is in development. There’s been quite a few rumors that something was in development, even Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes working on a potential reboot of Friday the 13th after being involved with the 2009 remake.

Until now, the last time we saw Jason in action was in the 2009 version, which was directed by Marcus Nispel. What was actually quite a great new take on the franchise sadly didn’t quite make the splash many hoped it would at the box office and never got a sequel. Simply titled Friday the 13th, it was a perfect jumping-off for a new franchise but it never moved forward.

Ironically, the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street faced a similar issue of reviving the cult classic but not getting the same critical reception. It also didn’t manage to continue the franchise but a potential successful remake of Friday the 13th could also see a new attempt to bring back Freddy Krueger as well. Considering Chucky got a second life with direct-to-DVD sequels and a TV series, horror is in a good place right now

  • ‘Servant’ Star Joins ‘The Omen’ Prequel

‘Servant’ Star Joins ‘The Omen’ Prequel

Horror prequels seem to be the new trend right now. Orphan just recently got a prequel and it seems that 20th Century is interested in attempting something similar with The Omen. Deadline has just reported that Apple TV+’s breakout star Nell Tiger Free has joined the upcoming prequel, set to be titled First Omen, in a leading role. The actress has just made her mark with her work on Servant and is joining Arkasha Stevenson‘s feature directing debut. Tim Smith will rewrite the project together with Stevenson.

David S. Goyer and Keith Levine are producing under their production label Phantom Four with Gracie Wheelan overseeing the project. It’ll act as a prequel to the 1976 classic, which made $60M domestically and followed the story of an American ambassador that believed his 5-year-old child is the Antichrist.

There are no details on exactly how they’ll tackle this project but it does seem likely that they’ll follow another family facing a similar challenge. Perhaps they’ll take a different direction and potentially explore how the Antichrist was brought into the world. Some cult exploration could make for a fun storyline and make it stand out from the story it’s leading into, but there’s a chance it may simply take the classic and repeat the storyline with a new family.

  • REPORT: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Re-Release May Replace ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Post-Credit Scene

REPORT: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Re-Release May Replace ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Post-Credit Scene

Spider-Man: No Way Home is returning to theaters with a new re-release version that includes a variety of new scenes that were cut from the original. There’s been no word on just how much it may affect the film, but we’ve got a few teases of what may have been added in. With it heading our way in just a few days, potentially going to compete with Top Gun: Maverick for the top spot this weekend, it seems leaks have already made their way online teasing what may have been added.

According to a Reddit post as shared by The Direct, the upcoming re-release will include a completely new post-credit sequence that replaces Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sequence. It seems that this one might clear up some confusion on just how exactly the spell works that Strange conjures at the end of the film. While it was hinted that the world would forget who Peter Parker is, we never really got to see that brought to life besides the brief exchange with MJ. It kept many wondering if he’d still be in photos but no one could really remember who he is.

Well, the new post-credit sequence would showcase Betty sharing her last news segment before graduating, which would include pictures from their previous adventures. The one key difference is that Peter Parker is not seen in any of them, such as the Decathlon from Spider-man: Homecoming and Far From Home‘s Europe trip. So, it clears up just how the entire world would truly forget who Peter Parker is and also highlight how

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Concept Art Reveals Chilling Scrapped Sequence

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Concept Art Reveals Chilling Scrapped Sequence

Usually released soon after theatrical debuts and season finales, concept art for projects frequently reveals early editions’ subtle deviations. For Thor: Love and Thunder, it appears that they have let fans witness a few of the movie’s deleted scenes, including one involving abandoned plot elements that involved Asgardian children. More information on that potential story component has been revealed in recently published concept art.

Concept artist George Hull posted concept paintings on Instagram from Thor: Love and Thunder that were “for the director & team as they considered different options for the final act in the film.” The first painting depicts an early version of the Gates of Eternity, as Thor, still holding Stormbreaker, witnesses hundreds of children being brought to Gorr. Hull also revealed that “the early script had the children’s souls as necessary to enter Eden,” but that director Taika Waititi decided to streamline the story instead, limiting Gorr to just needing Stormbreaker.

However, the final piece depicts Stormbreaker being used in a manner similar to the film’s final cut, but this time a child is in the path of the beam, possibly to depict Gorr’s need for the children’s souls to enter Eternity’s realm. Gorr’s need for their souls was clearly not present or even alluded to in the final film.

For some, this raises the question of why Gorr even needed the children at all in the final film. Given the possibility and likelihood that a lot of material was taken out of the final cut of Love and Thunder, there may or may not be a satisfying answer to that question. One thing is certain: avoiding sacrificing the souls of children undoubtedly limited how dark the film became.

  • Rian Johnson Still Hoping to Work on His ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

Rian Johnson Still Hoping to Work on His ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

When Rian Johnson worked on The Last Jedi, it was revealed that he’d be developing his own Star Wars trilogy. There were no details revealed on just how exactly it was going to tie into the greater mythos or even the direction. Yet, the fan reception of his Star Wars project can still be felt to today but that has seemingly not deterred the director from hoping to tackle this project.

In an interview with Empire, while promoting his upcoming Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, he reveals that he still actively is in talks with Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy and that he’s definitely hoping to adapt his trilogy eventually; even if schedules are continuing to postpone this project indefinitely.

I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it. It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.

    Rian Johnson

It’s great to know that he’s still working on his trilogy and Star Wars is still expanding with its new Disny+ series. So, while the cinematic aspect of the franchise is currently on ice, there’s hope that once Johnson wraps up his work on the Knives Out sequels for Netflix, he might potentially start work on his take on a galaxy far, far away.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige Join Eddie Murphy’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Sequel

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige Join Eddie Murphy’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Sequel

Axel Foley is back as the upcoming legacy sequel heading to Netflix has finally started getting some steam. Deadline has just revealed that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined returning Eddie Murphy in the upcoming film. Production is already underway with Mark Molloy in the director’s chair. As one would expect, Murphy will once again play Axel Foley, who is also taking on a producing role alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman.

The film also got a new title, as it’ll be known as Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. It’s unclear what direction they are going with this sequel which will revisit one of the early comedy cinematic icons first introduced back in 1984. The franchise went on to consist of three films. There’s no word yet if other actors might be reprising their roles from previous films. It’s also unclear which role Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will have in the upcoming sequel.

The title is certainly curious as it almost feels like they are chasing something that Top Gun: Maverick put out there with its title. Of course, it’s unclear if this new title is potentially meant as a tribute to the franchise’s new direction as a last hurrah for the character. Perhaps they also hope to pass on the torch to a new generation but it’s unclear just what their goal is with the sequel. We’ll have to see once the first trailer arrives.

  • ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Characters Revealed

‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Characters Revealed

It’s the moment every Knives Out fan has been waiting for. After an auspiciously long wait, Empire Magazine has finally revealed the identities of the sequel’s many characters. The star-studded project has been the subject of much speculation since the full cast began to become public over the last couple years. Now, audiences will be able to put fictional names to all the very real faces occupying Rian Johnson‘s next Benoit Blanc mystery. Of course, Daniel Craig will be back as the now-iconic Southern detective who has become the centerpiece of the Knives Out franchise. As for the rest, that’s where things get a little more unfamiliar.

Titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the second Blanc adventure concerns a group of old acquaintances who are summoned to Greece by a rich mutual friend for a murder-mystery game that becomes a little too real. Starring in the film will be Kathryn Hahn, who is set to portray Governor Claire Debella, a Connecticut politician who is now running for the Senate. According to director Johnson, she “pisses everyone off, and is trying to thread the needle in many different ways, in terms of her public persona and what she’s willing to compromise in order to stay in office“. Next is Kate Hudson as Birdie Jay, a fashionista, and Iron Fist star Jessica Henwick as Peg, her assistant. Not much else was said about this duo, but it’s safe to assume the talent involved in their dynamic will be a joy to watch.

Edward Norton is set to play Miles Bron, a billionaire tech disruptor. Johnson spoke about Bron candidly, saying “the species that [Miles] is derived from will be instantly recognizable to a lot of people in our era of tech billionaires“. Leslie Odom Jr. will bring to life Lionel Toussaint, a scientist who works for Bron. As for Dave Bautista, he’ll play against type as a popular YouTuber named Duke Cody, while Madelyn Cline portrays Whiskey, his girlfriend and assistant. Finally, Janelle Monáe will be seen as Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand, a tech entrepreneur.

Ethan Hawke is confirmed to have a role in the film, though his character is the only one that remains unknown to viewers. It’s possible that Hawke is the rich mutual friend who brings everyone else together in the first place, or the one that bites it early in the plot, but that remains to be seen. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will stream exclusively on Netflix starting December 23rd.

  • RUMOR: ‘You’ Star Penn Badgley In Talks to Play Mr. Fantastic

RUMOR: ‘You’ Star Penn Badgley In Talks to Play Mr. Fantastic

Update: Devin Faraci has taken to Twitter to clarify that he has no inside information on this rumor, which is still a rumor, just one with even less to hold onto than before.

    https://twitter.com/devincf/status/1564117254727315456

Fantastic Four, which was formally confirmed to launch Phase 6 during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation, has been a topic of discussion among fans more frequently than almost any other MCU film in recent months. With WandaVision filmmaker Matt Shakman reportedly in talks to helm the film, the biggest question remaining is who will be cast as the First Family of Marvel.

Only a few months ago, John Krasinski brought a Marvel Cinematic Universe Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, to life in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, it appears more and more unlikely that he will come back to play the Earth-616 version of Mr. Fantastic in the MCU’s first Fantastic Four solo film after providing quite a lot of fan service with his Doctor Strange role.

On the Marvelvision Podcast, former “Birth. Movies. Death.” editor-in-chief Devin Faraci reported that Marvel Studios had spoken with You star Penn Badgley about playing Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. Faraci had hopes for a Black actor to play Mr. Fantastic, but stated that Marvel Studios was likely going to be “very traditional” instead:

The guys that [Marvel Studios] been talking to about it are all white guys. That guy [Penn Badgley] from the show You, who probably has the role already, frankly, he’s a white guy. They’re going with the standard… And he’s terrific, by the way, that’s a good choice. But, they’re going very classical.

    Devin Faraci

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously stated that the hunt for the ideal stars will be long and that the crew would look for “the best actor for the position(s)” in Fantastic Four, regardless of popularity. While this is currently just a rumor, an official announcement of the film’s cast could come as early as Marvel Studios’ presentation at Disney’s D23 Expo on September 10, 2022.

Fantastic Four will make its theatrical debut on November 8, 2024.
