  • ‘KINGDOM’s Shinsuke Sato to Direct Live-Action ‘MY HERO ACADEMIA’ Film

‘KINGDOM’s Shinsuke Sato to Direct Live-Action ‘MY HERO ACADEMIA’ Film

It looks like movement has finally happened for the long-rumored live-action adaptation of the popular series My Hero Academia. Deadline has revealed that Shinsuke Sato, who many might know for his work on the Japanese film Kingdom, will direct the adaptation for Legendary. It’ll be an English version based on the popular manga franchise by Kohei Horikoshi. The series has been quite popular in Anime circles thanks to the work of Bones Inc. and Toho Animation. The series already released three animated films and it’s uncertain if this adaptation will follow the manga or take a unique approach.

My Hero Academia Season 5 to Go on Break Next Week - Verve times

In the manga and anime, we follow the story of a young boy named Dekul. In a world where 80% of humans have unique abilities, he wants to fulfill his dream of becoming a hero. Yet, the reality is much harsher and he learns that he is “Quirkless.” As such, he could never gain a special ability until he meets his idol, All Might. Known as the greatest hero in the world, he uncovers a secret that’ll change his life.

It would be strange to simply tackle the same story, as the world introduced in the franchise offers the opportunity to tell a unique story from a new perspective. Yet, it seems likely they’ll try and follow Deku’s story due to its close ties to its overall mythos. Still, the franchise tried out spin-offs with the Vigilantes manga, which further developed the rules a world filled with professional heroes abides by. Perhaps the film could do something similar.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Eyeing a $35M to $55M Domestic Opening Weekend

    ‘SHANG-CHI’ Eyeing a $35M to $55M Domestic Opening Weekend

Disney has been going through some troublesome times. After Black Widow opened to an impressive $80M during the pandemic, many wondered what it might mean for their next release. The Delta Variant continues to spread, and people are even more hesitant to visit cinemas. Of course, it raises questions regarding the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in just a few weeks. Well, it looks like it could still garner an impressive Box Office for a pandemic, but it’s also a far cry from where the first 2021 Marvel Studios’ release landed.

As of now, the film is predicted to hit around $35M. The current optimistic ceiling would place it at $55M. If they ramp up the advertisement in the upcoming weeks, they might even push it up, but the film is unlikely to even get near a $200M domestic Box Office in its run. If it does manage to pass the $40M benchmark, it’ll be the first film since Black Widow, as most films faltered out around the $30M range. If it hits the top $55M prediction it would below Ant-Man, and The Incredible Hulk.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Neuer Trailer zum Marvel-Film

There’s some hope that the Marvel Studios’ brand will push the film to a higher rate even during uncertain times. Unlike the previous release, it won’t be available on Disney+ Premier Access, which might hurt its opening weekend but could give it much longer legs than other digital releases. It will have a 45-day release window before it gets released on Disney+, which will signal how Disney handles future releases moving forward.

Shang-Chi has a lot of potential as a franchise. Especially as it is an essential move for Asian-American representation. Hopefully, the film will manage to pass the ceiling, but it seems unlikely given the current circumstances. Even Black Widow missed its optimistic ceiling of $110M, but it could’ve been influenced by its digital availability. Its success might also determine Eternals release as others continue to push back films back. Right now, success can no longer get purely based on its Box Office alone, and it may find a larger audience on the streaming service once it releases.

  • Exploring a Darker MCU Spider-Man Story Through a ‘Gang Wars’ Adaptation

Exploring a Darker MCU Spider-Man Story Through a ‘Gang Wars’ Adaptation

The 1980s were a grimy time for Marvel. Their comics were filled with plotlines concerning the downtrodden streets of a once-proud nation, and their heroes often found themselves dipping their pantyhose in the darker corners of morality. Spider-Man, for example, swapped his famous red-and-blues for a new pitch-black color scheme and dove headfirst into New York’s criminal underworld. The resulting comic arcs are often lost in the shuffle of alien symbiotes and vengeful hunters, but in retrospect, they’re just as good as anything Marvel has done with the character.

Many internet pitches for Tom Holland‘s next set of potential Spider-Films include re-iterations of tales we’ve already seen in both live-action and animation. While those stories are favorites for a reason, it’s time to explore a darker side of the iconic web-head. The Death of Jean DeWolff and Gang War, written by Peter David and Christopher Priest, respectively, are two of the great narratives in regard to Peter Parker’s more grounded adventures.

Spider-Man's Return To Disney's Marvel Comes At Great Cost To Sony

The former sees one of Spider-Man’s closest allies in the NYPD, Captain Jean DeWolff, gunned down in her own home. It follows his emotional quest to find her killer and put a stop to his murderous rampage. The latter deals with numerous crime lords from the Big Apple’s seedy underbelly waging an all-out war for control of the Kingpin’s empire. At the core is Spider-Man’s desperate attempts to end the conflict and keep innocent people safe. Both stories push Spidey to the brink of his mental capacity, test his relationship with the people of his city, and if combined properly, could make for an amazing Spider-Man movie.

The foundation for a Gang War adaptation would be best laid using the concept of a power struggle in New York’s world of organized crime. In the comics, the power vacuum opened when Wilson Fisk mysteriously disappeared from the city, and figureheads like The Rose, Hammerhead, and Silvermane began vying for the vacant position. With Daredevil on his way to the MCU, it’s possible Fisk could also play a role in Spider-Man’s cinematic future, but he doesn’t have to for this story to work.

Marvel's Spider-Man DLC Chapter 2: “Turf Wars” Review | by Jake Pelusi | Orange and Juicy | Medium

A deleted scene from Far From Home revealed the existence of the Manfredi family in Marvel’s live-action universe, so it stands to reason a character like Silvermane could already be at the top of the criminal food chain. If the old man were to perish unexpectedly, with the chance to return later in a cyborg body, it would be enough to create a similar violent situation. Characters from the story directly linked to Fisk, like his son, The Rose, could be replaced with other underappreciated antagonists, like former enforcer Tombstone or fashion designer-turned-criminal Roderick Kingsley.

Should these crime lords begin warring in New York, Peter Parker would be sure to notice and attempt an intervention for the sake of civilian safety. Much like the comic, the naivety of his actions could actually work to prolong the conflict and add quite a bit of depth to his unhealthy working relationship with New York’s police department. It also gives us a new understanding of Peter’s overall motives. It would serve the story well to give Peter a confidant, or “good cop”, that supports his endeavors, like DeWolff, Yuri Watanabe, or George Stacy. All three of these characters eventually die in the line of duty, and an incident like this on film would be a good reason to push Parker towards an uncharacteristic rampage of his own. The MCU likes its amalgamations, so a mix of the three, with a name like Captain Jean Stacy, could be in order.

Tom Holland Cried to Let Spider-Man Stay in Marvel - Masala.com

As previously mentioned, DeWolff and Gang War take place during Spidey’s time in the black suit. If that were the case here, the death of a friend at the hands of the world’s sleaziest would be enough to evoke new, darker personality traits in our favorite hero. With his immense power, it would take a special kind of someone to prevent him from doing something he might regret. Daredevil plays a prominent role in both comic arcs and has his horns deep in the philosophy of street-level crime. It makes him the perfect candidate to interfere in Spider-Man’s emotional tear and help the young hero battle his foes the just way.

A project that draws from all of these elements has a lot of potentials. On the surface, it would be incredibly cool to see a costumed Spider-Man and Daredevil fight crime side-by-side. The crime lords of Spidey’s rogue’s gallery deserve the spotlight eventually. On a deeper level, a slightly older Holland examining Peter Parker’s ethics, dealing with true loss, and protecting his home turf is exactly what a lot of people want to see. The story would be completely different from what we’ve seen, but maybe that’s exactly what the character needs right now.

  • Alan Taylor Shares His Original Plans for a More Magical ‘THOR: THE DARK WORLD’

Alan Taylor Shares His Original Plans for a More Magical ‘THOR: THE DARK WORLD’

Marvel Studios may be huge on creative vision now, but that wasn’t always the case. The production giant’s second phase of films was plagued by conflicts between directors and Marvel’s now-defunct creative committee. These disagreements famously led to Edgar Wright departing Ant-Man, and had a huge impact on the final product of the MCU’s first Thor sequel.

Before Game of ThronesAlan Taylor boarded the project, it had already lost a director in the form of future Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins. We’ve known for a while that The Dark World didn’t end up looking as Taylor originally intended, but now we have a clearer idea of what it was supposed to look like. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he offered a glimpse of his vision.

The version I had started off with had more childlike wonder; there was this imagery of children, which started the whole thing. There was a slightly more magical quality. There was weird stuff going on back on Earth because of the convergence that allowed for some of these magical realism things. And there were major plot differences that were inverted in the cutting room and with additional photography — people [such as Loki] who had died were not dead, people who had broken up were back together again. I think I would like my version.

    Alan Taylor

It would seem Taylor’s original plans included keeping Tom Hiddleston’s Loki dead. The big reveal is the plan on ending the relationship between Thor and Jane Foster earlier than expected. While it would have been interesting to see what direction these changes might have taken the MCU, it is worth noting that keeping these developments in the film would likely have prevented Loki from happening. We might not have even gotten Taika Waititi’s Thor films that redefined the character. Sometimes, the universe is give-and-take.

  • Samuel L. Jackson Hints at Nick Fury Appearing in ‘THE MARVEL’s

Samuel L. Jackson Hints at Nick Fury Appearing in ‘THE MARVEL’s

All eyes are on Samuel L. Jackson right now, as he recently teased the return of Nick Fury’s iconic mustache. The only question was which project is he included, as we know he’ll have a starring role in Disney+’s Secret Invasion. Yet, there have been inklings he’d also join the upcoming The Marvel‘s film, which will see the team-up of Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani‘s Ms. Marvel. Larson recently confirmed that production has started with director Nia DaCosta. As if they timed it perfectly, he released his Instagram post with the iconic beard confirming he is currently filming a project.

It wasn’t until his second Instagram post that he tagged The Marvel‘s film and potentially confirmed his appearance in the film. There’s still little information that leaked from the project, but it seems possible he’s also working on Secret Invasion, as the projects could potentially interconnect due to the strong inclusion of the Skrulls. They had a prominent role in the first Captain Marvel film and the sequel might continue telling that story, as there are also rumblings of Jude Law‘s Yon-Rogg making a return.

The exciting aspect about these two projects filming around the same time is the implications for the story. We still don’t know how true the Secret Invasion series will be to the comics. So, there might be some curious twists that also tie into the film, as they’re still is no word on who their main antagonist might be. Perhaps we’ll witness the Skrull-Kree War that ended up getting continued on Earth much to our hero’s dismay.

  • Sony Considering a ‘VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE’ and ‘HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA’ Delay

Sony Considering a ‘VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE’ and ‘HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA’ Delay

It looks like Sony is having quite a bit of trouble with their upcoming cinematic releases. According to Deadline, they are considering pushing Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania back. There has been no final decision been made, but current developments surrounding the Delta Variant have the production company weighing out their options moving forward. It seems they are considering a delay for the Venom sequel into October 15th, which would align with the recent New Zealand release. The article also states they have even considered a January as a potential new date, which would mean Morbius gets pushed back again.

Of course, the bigger aspect of these potential delays is that it’ll also affect Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is currently eyeing a release in December. If they continue to delay their releases, it may also join 2022. The studio is currently considering putting the fourth entry in their Hotel Transylvania film on a streaming service, which would be difficult for their other projects. Right now, it seems that all eyes are on the theatre-only release of Free Guy to get a feeling if the market will sustain non-digital releases moving forward.

They might be mapping out multiple delay dates just in case the earliest can’t be met. So, the January one seems unlikely for now but it’s not unsurprising that they’re considering it. The only thing that is still up in the air is if they’ll push Morbius back by multiple months as well. So, only the coming months will give us an inkling what the future holds for cinemas.

  • Gabriel Iglesias Calls His ‘Space Jam’ Speedy Gonzales Casting a “Big Brown Shield”

Gabriel Iglesias Calls His ‘Space Jam’ Speedy Gonzales Casting a “Big Brown Shield”

Space Jam: A New Legacy brought back an iconic franchise that saw the Looney Tunes reunite with a famous basketball player. While Michael Jordan didn’t return, LeBron James took center stage and played a game with the famous cartoon characters against a group of unlikely foes. In the case of the Loony Tunes, they did continue the classic voices of many characters, with Eric Bauza continuing to voice characters like Bugs Bunny.

Yet, they did end up recasting some members such as Zendaya taking over the role of Lola, which recently got reinvented by Kristen Wiig on The Looney Tunes Show. Another new casting was in the form of famous comedian Gabriel Iglesias as Speedy Gonzales. He recently appeared on The Late Show and discussed his role in the film with Stephen Colbert, where he revealed some curious decisions made for his casting as the iconic character. First off, he didn’t have to audition for the role, and they offered him to change the iconic voice of the character.

I thought that was pretty awesome that they would give me that power. And I said ‘No. When people think of Speedy Gonzales, I don’t want them to think of me, I want them to think of Speedy Gonzales.’

    Gabriel Iglesias

He goes on to reveal that even though he was already cast as the character, they weren’t sure if he could to an impression of him. It was a rather surprising inquiry as he already got the part before someone revealed that:

The question was asked, ‘Can you do Speedy Gonzales?’ And I’m like, ‘How did I get the part? Oh, they needed a big brown shield.’

It’s a curious way for Warner Bros. to handle the casting, but there have been many controversies surrounding the character and the stereotypes he portrayed. Iglesias did go on to make the joke after they loved his performance that “I have been Mexican a long time.” before he showed off his vocal performances on the show. He also highlighted the fact that he and his family loved growing up with the character.
