One of the most surprising successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the studio’s ability to draw from the far reaches of their intellectual property and turn those characters into household names. Perhaps the best example of this is the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which has spawned into one of the most well-known groups in pop culture.
James Gunn‘s 2014 film has become a staple in the MCU and characters like Star-Lord and Gamora have played huge roles in the building of the universe. To say anticipation is high for the third installment, set to be released on May 5, 2023, is an understatement.
The ending of the trilogy has been teased by the cast and director as being quite emotional for some time now. Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, was asked by Digital Spy in an interview about his thoughts on the third film while promoting his new Amazon series, The Terminal List.
Pratt had high praise for Gunn:
It’s fantastic. [Director] James Gunn just watched a rough assembly the other day. I called him yesterday. We Facetimed, and he’s very, very proud of the work that everyone’s done. He said it’s the best work all of us have ever done. He feels very, very confident. The script was amazing.
Chris Pratt
But Pratt didn’t stop there. He went on to make a bold claim about the upcoming film as well:
And I can say with utter confidence that he’s made a true masterpiece, and I just cannot wait for people to see it. It’s James Gunn. He did all three movies, which is really rare and really special in the world of big box-office trilogies.
Chris Pratt
What do you think? Will Vol. 3 be able to outrank the previous films? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
The Avatar franchise is preparing to go full force in terms of expanding its presence on the cinematic landscape. Following more than a decade since the 2009 release of the original film, director James Cameron is bringing his vision back to the big screen with Avatar: The Way of Water releasing in December of this year. The sequel will be followed by another, untitled sequel scheduled for 2024. This is all part of Cameron’s lofty vision of creating a multi-film saga set in the same universe.
Though the team behind the franchise is hopeful for being able to produce the conclusion of this saga in the near future with fourth and fifth films being produced together, it may not be James Cameron helming these two installments. When speaking with Empire about the imminent release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the renowned director discussed the possibility that he might pass the reigns to another filmmaker for the next two-film chapter.
The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.
James Cameron
This feels like a surprising revelation based on how passionately James Cameron has spoken about and worked in the world of Avatar. Especially with it being the hypothetical end of the franchise, it’s hard to not see Cameron be the one to direct this conclusion. Even if he does step away from the director’s chair, Cameron would remain greatly passionate for what these films mean to him and would very likely still have large amounts of control over this world.
Everything I need to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, the themes that are important to me in real life and in my cinematic life, I can say on this canvas. I got more excited as I went along. Movie four is a corker. It’s a motherfucker. I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it’s coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make four and five because it’s one big story, ultimately.
James Cameron
Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is slated to open exclusively in theaters on December 16, 2022.
Taika Waititi certainly took Thor in a very different direction from Thor: Ragnarok. While some weren’t too pleased with the more comedic direction, it does seem like it reinvigorated the cast and crew to continue telling the story of the God of Thunder. Thor: God of Thunder will even be the first time that one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises gets the fourth entry.
Chris Hemsworth got a chance to share why he continues to return to the role during the official press conference for the MCU sequel and what he finds so relatable to this new version of Thor.
Yeah, no, definitely, especially since Taika got involved. He brought out the immature, young, adolescent quality that I embody. And so does Thor now, which he didn’t in the original films, which was exciting and new and fresh. And that’s, you know, always the sort of North Star is about having fun, you know.
Chris Hemsworth
He goes on to highlight how they developed this project and started embracing what these characters all inherently should represent: fun.
Embodying this space as a child would and enjoying all of it and being caught up in the wonder and the fascination of all of it. And not getting bogged down in the serious sort of nature that we can when making films, you know. Personally, with these kind of films, it’s got to be fun, and that’s what we’ve done. That’s what I’ve related to. That’s what Taika’s kind of insisted upon, and it’s been fun.
Chris Hemsworth
He has stated that he ran out of energy with the character at a point. If it weren’t for Taika Waititi, we may have not seen Hemsworth in the MCU for as long as we did. And it seemingly also led to Hemsworth finding the part of himself that built a better connection with the character moving forward as he may still have some energy left to continue his journey through the franchise.
There was a time when one of the top criticisms the Marvel Cinematic Universe faced was that the films had a “villain problem.” This wasn’t entirely inaccurate, because unlike with well-known heroes like Batman and Spider-Man, the earliest MCU films were about establishing who our long-term protagonists would be, more than establishing who would be their foils.
But as the quality of the offerings have improved, so too has Marvel’s ability to introduce heroes and progress their stories in the projects of others, leaving the films with more real estate to give their antagonists room to flourish. Add in the way that some villains’ stories intertwined with those of the heroes, and that has provided the ingredients for the introduction of villains who leave an impression on audiences even after they’re vanquished. And in a storytelling form that thrives on characters returning and resurfacing, that has been invaluable.
But what if someone were to scour the first 4 phases of the MCU and create a new and formidable villain, stitched together from antagonists past? From which five villains would you take component parts for this unholy union, and which parts would you use? This piece purports to answer that question. Behold, our Villain Frankenstein!
The Commitment of Thanos
For most fans, Thanos is either #1 or #1A on their list of favorite MCU villains. And why wouldn’t he? In Avengers: Infinity Warhe defeated the Avengers handily while throwing timeless verbal barbs in their direction — not to mention fragments of nearby moons. He humbled the Hulk, victimized the Vision, and laid waste to worlds, all in the name of balancing the universe through the eradication of half its sentient life. So thorough was his victory, and so committed was he to achieve that victory, that audiences couldn’t help but begrudgingly give him respect.
But beyond the respect for how formidable he was, audiences also considered, because of Thanos’ commitment to his vision for the universe, and his willingness to sacrifice and risk everything for it, the possibility that just maybe he had a point. Does the world warrant a biblical-style purge? Indeed, sometimes it feels like it does. Can the idea of killing half of everyone indiscriminately and leaving survivors to make a better universe in its aftermath seem oddly plausible? Yes! So we can understand a villain who takes years, stretched across multiple films, acquiring the MacGuffins and putting the pieces into place, doing so in service of a victory of that scale. That his Snap was ultimately reversed is immaterial; his impact is still being felt. Thanos showed that it was possible for the villain to win, and because it took five years for that win to be overcome, the MCU, and its audience, was forced to marinate in his message.
The Righteousness of Killmonger
Before “Thanos Was Right,” it was Erik “Killmonger” Stevens in Black Panther who articulated a worldview that resonated with audiences, despite being ultimately villainous. Colonization and oppression, particularly at the hands of Europeans, have ravaged the Global Majority, marginalizing them, and creating an underclass throughout the world who need to rise up and achieve liberation by striking back. And in the utopian nation of Wakanda reside the tools that could make this global revolution possible. By sitting back and letting all the horrors be visited on people of color throughout the world by imperial powers, Wakanda abdicated a responsibility that should have been a moral imperative. And if Killmonger led them, the formerly powerless would rise up worldwide and become a new power, a new empire, that would strike fear in the hearts of any that opposed them.
Yes, of course, that goes too far. But up until the point that it goes too far, we find ourselves nodding our heads in condemnation for the “comfortable” who sit idly by while others are oppressed. We admire the fact that a young boy left orphaned in an Oakland housing project was able to mold himself into a fierce fighter, a tactical genius, and an engineering wunderkind, with nary a Bat insignia to speak of. Instead, he wears on his body the scars of all the killing he had to do to put himself on the Wakandan throne — even the killing of his own people. And he scoffs at the fact that Wakandans debate intervention while innocents suffer and die in the imperial yoke. It’s a message that continues to resonate today, as the masses cry out for someone who will do whatever is necessary to defeat tyranny, including getting their hands dirty.
In our hearts, we know that Erik honed himself into something sharp and hard because his world wouldn’t let him be anything different, and when he does die in Black Panther, it’s tragic. But we also know that there are billions subjected to that same world, many making similar choices, because sharp and hard is what makes survival more likely than not. So villain or no, there’s something to the idea of the Wakandan spear that strikes at the heart of the powers that be in order to liberate the powerless. At times, we wanted to believe Killmonger could be that spear of righteousness, and it’s an epic villain whose cause is so sympathetic that you almost want to take it up alongside them.
The Resources of Wenwu
The Ten Rings organization was introduced to fans in the very first MCU movie, Iron Man as a shadowy terrorist network, yet we learn years later in Shang-Chi and The Legend of TheTen Rings that their roots stretch back millennia, and their origins lie in ten mystical artifacts of immense power, wielded by Xu Wenwu. With these Rings, Wenwu is able to take down kingdoms and annihilate armies singlehandedly and is granted near-immortality, inspiring the devoted and fanatical following which provides the foundation for his international criminal empire.
In the Ten Rings, Wenwu established a clandestine organization with the resources to rival Hydra, which for the most part had been able to prosper despite the existence of S.H.I.E.L.D., the emergence of the Avengers, and the rampage of the Ronin. And his identity as the head of the organization was secret enough that an actor could be installed as a figurehead with no one in law enforcement having a clue.
Although by the end of Shang-Chi, leadership of the Ten Rings organization has passed from Wenwu to his daughter Xu Xialing, and custody of the Rings themselves has passed to his son Shang-Chi, it should not be forgotten that for thousands of years, this martial arts master and criminal mastermind possessed ten of Earth’s most powerful weapons, and had an army of operatives at his disposal all over the world. It’s certainly disappointing that we mostly got to see the fall of Wenwu, rather than his rise and reign. But the glimpses we did see were of a formidable man who built an empire that was not to be trifled with. And there is a certain irony to the fact that his other defining characteristic, family man — exemplified by his desire to see his children extend his legacy — ended up being fulfilled in his death. He was a cruel and overbearing dad, and yet, he still managed to get his way. How villainous is that?
The Sex Appeal of Hela
Does a great villain have to be sexy? Of course not. However, great villains are often charismatic, confident, graceful, and lithe, and there’s something sensually appealing about a character who is uninhibited and unabashedly bad. From the moment she first steps out of the portal in Thor: Ragnarok like some kind of goth goddess, Hela was capable of stealing the spotlight from both the hunky and handsome Thor and the devilishly charming Loki, chewing scenery, smashing Mjolnir, and establishing her dominance. She laid waste to Asgard and looked fabulous doing it. Whether you’re male or female, a villain who can make you swoon, despite knowing that their intentions are far from pure…well, let’s just say that Tumblr exists for a reason.
The MCU was reluctant to have female villains for a long time, and I suspect part of the issue was presenting an antagonist who could convincingly present a physical threat to male heroes. Well in the Goddess of Death, Taika Waititi was able to give us all of that, as Hela stepped on the necks of every male character and dared them to beg for more. When she instructs them to take to their knees and submit to her will, we as an audience are kind of hoping she gets to do her worst. Every moment she strokes her hair, tilts her head back, and unleashes her thorny antlers becomes instantly iconic because she’s about to do Very Bad Things that we can’t wait to see.
There have been a lot of formidable villains in the MCU, but none other than Hela have served such looks while also serving up so much death and destruction. This goddess deserves her spot in the pantheon.
The Gravitas of the Kingpin
Wilson Fisk’s physical stature certainly looms large, and so does his influence. Whether he’s the Big Bad of Daredevilwilling to bash a head in for embarrassing him in front of Vanessa, or on Hawkeyetearing a car door off the hinges, the unbridled rage of the Kingpin is intimidating. However, even more intimidating is his soft-spoken, measured approach to getting his point across the other 90% of the time. As portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, Wilson Fisk is a man capable of conveying menace in an anecdote, inspiring fear in even the pauses between his words. You cross him at your peril, and Fisk speaks like a man who knows that, and most importantly, knows that you know it.
Kingpin is a villain that commands both our attention and our respect, even though he isn’t the most charismatic in his oratory. He isn’t going to drop a smooth one-liner or dazzle us with his charm. He is, however, going to be riveting in his determined and deliberate delivery of a dramatic monologue. And monologues are a great villain’s stock in trade.
Villainy is a complex stew. There’s not an exact formula that can be relied upon to create a timeless villain. But if you were trying to create a blueprint, so that you could build an elite supervillain in a lab, this would be a great starting point. We’ve got some great villains coming down the pipeline in the months and years ahead. Let’s see how they measure up.
I think no one saw this coming but it seems that Minions: The Rise of Gru has pulled in an astonishing $108.51M in three days. As it was July 4th weekend, it has ended its total weekend run with $127.9M, which is now the second-best opening for any Despicable Me film with the original minions slightly ahead at $115.7M over three days. The exciting aspect is that this success on top of Top Gun: Maverick‘s continued hold is projecting this weekend as one that might even beat out 2019; something no one could’ve imagined when the pandemic took its toll. In a way, the final missing piece of the box office drive may have finally been brought back.
Of course, upcoming releases could still hit some snags. Lightyear was a surprise hit for Pixar, which has been steadily losing momentum after only three weeks. It’s ironic given how Minions is also just a spinoff of an existing franchise, but it does have the advantage of having a direct connection, unlike Lightyear which only uses the name of one of the Toy Story franchise’s characters. Sadly, it seems that it may not even beat The Good Dinosaur‘s run in theaters, which was its worst performer so far. Still, Rise of Gru is way ahead of projections that had it at $75M with a second analysis moving closer to $100M.
This success is also a good sign for Illumination’s future projects. While the IP has also landed on a specific meme status with people arriving in theaters in suits, they generally have been the face of the company. They have a few big projects on the way, especially their cooperation with Nintendo which will see the latest attempt at a cinematic experience starring everyone’s favorite plumber, Mario. So, we’ll see if the film can continue this hold going into its second weekend or also potentially face a harsher drop with the arrival of Thor: Love and Thunder.
Thor will be the first Marvel Studios franchise to get the fourth installment treatment with Thor: Love and Thunder. Taika Waititi is back in the directing chair, who took over with Thor: Ragnarok. He took the franchise in a completely new direction; focusing more on Chris Hemsworth‘s comedic chops. In the official press conference for the upcoming Marvel film, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed why Hemsworth‘s Thor is the first to get four entries.
I think they respond to Chris Hemsworth, and I think they respond to everything that he can do. And Taika certainly brought another dimension that was always there within Chris. There were moments, even going back to EPK interviews between the two of them on our New Mexico set, where Chris was… I was like, “Is he trying to be funny? Or is it…? No, he is being funny. He’s, like, hilarious.” And beginning to… And I saw a clip of Ultron the other day, where he’s trying to make Ruffalo feel better about smashing a bunch of people, and it’s so funny.
Kevin Feige
Age of Ultron definitely set up Thor’s future in a more comedic role, even The Dark World; faults and all; had some hilarious moments when the Odinson brothers interacted. So, it was luckily Taika Waititi that approached Marvel and told them to make use of Hemsworth‘s comedic chops.
And it’s so… it’s like this expert timing. And Taika was like, “What are you guys doing with him just, you know, holding a hammer up with lightning? Let’s do that and tap into everything Chris can do.” So, I think the audience responds to that. And for so long, we said, “Well, he’s a Norse god. How do we make him relatable?” And spent so much time, I think, making sure that the audience connected with him, that they are so with him now that yes, we could go to a part four.
Kevin Feige
They certainly put in the work and it’s great to see Chris Hemsworth enjoy his time with the character. He especially was happy for the new direction with the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who’ll definitely set up a new dynamic. Plus, we also have the already comedic-focused Guardians of the Galaxy joining this time around, who are definitely going to add some unique flair and comedy bits. Early reactions definitely teased Waititi‘s comedic chops are at a new high and it’ll definitely be interesting to see if there might even be a fifth installment in his future.
There have been many theories on how Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might wrap up the trilogy that director James Gunn started back in 2014. After a brief delay, the film is only a few more months away before hitting theaters and it’s been hinted at as the final entry of the current version of the Guardians. Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, has also been quite vocal on potentially leaving the franchise behind.
Now taking to his Twitter page, Gunn may have further added weight to the idea that Bautista may be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good after this new entry. While he still keeps the door slightly open he states that “it’s probably Drax’s last movie” and further confirms that the current version of the Guardians will be no more after the events of the film.
I try to never say never when it comes to these things but, yes, it’s probably Drax’s last movie and the end of the story for this group of Guardians. https://t.co/NIhqKxAIXQ
It definitely won’t be the same without Drax in this franchise but here’s hoping that he gets a great sendoff in the story. He sadly never truly got to get his revenge on Thanos due to what happened to his family, but who knows what the future might hold for the legacy he leaves behind. Moondragon could still be out there for all we know.
Earlier today we got our first look at Attuma from merchandise that was making the rounds for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Now, it seems that @MCU_Facility has shared the first look at Tenoch Huerta‘s Namor. The design was hinted at earlier and continues to highlight how the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the character is inspired by Mayan culture.
The design is definitely a great addition to the MCU with a lot of added detail hinting at the technology being used by the race living underwater. It’ll be interesting to see if he’ll appear in the first trailer or this might be something that is kept a secret moving forward. Yes, we have gotten our first look at the character through this merchandise reveal but most people don’t learn about it until the actual trailers drop.
So, we don’t know how they’ll promote this new character. A lot of weight is likely on the release of this trailer considering the weight it carries after the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman. We still don’t know how they’ll approach it and if they will even focus on it in the initial trailer, as it is what everyone has been wondering about since the film started production.
Tessa Thompson is just as much a star as Natalie Portman and ChrisHemsworth. As such, all eyes are on her journey in the upcoming fourth entry, Thor: Love and Thunder, that’ll continue where we left off with her character during Avengers: Endgame. Now, she serves as the king of Asgard and it’s not all as rosy as she hoped for it to be, as Thompson reveals during the official press conference for Love and Thunder.
With this one, we also talked about the idea of someone that has a job that they really love, but they’re also kind of disgruntled. She, you know, was a professional soldier for thousands of years and now finds herself kind of stuck in bureaucracy. So, she’s really missing being on the battlefield and missing her sisters. And so, it’s been great fun to get to have that again, with Natalie in particular as Mighty Thor.
Tessa Thompson
From the sounds of it, Thompson had a blast exploring this character, especially how her role was set up in Avengers: Endgame. It makes sense that the noble warrior may have underestimated the new role given to her, especially when Earth is mostly about bureaucracy. We got a glimpse of it in the trailers and it’ll be interesting to see if this might also shift Asgard’s place on Earth in one way or another.
We’ve got a hint that they’ve seen quite the tourism boom, which may also have led to Valkyrie being busy with more business dealings rather than bad guy takedowns. Perhaps the battle with Gorr also opens up her views on enjoying the quiet moments before they vanish.
Once again, Marvel Studios has allowed first looks and teases for their upcoming projects to leak via official merchandising with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever serving as the latest example. A first look at Attuma made its way online earlier and now an interesting look at some Ironheart-inspired designs that may indicate Riri Williams armor could have a Wakandan connection.
Courtesy of MCU Facility, fans can see a “Mark 1” logo among a plethora of other logos, including the iconic panther head associated with Wakanda adorned in the red and gold colors of Iron Man. Overall, the idea seems to be that Riri will be using some of Iron Man’s spare parts to assemble her own armor…in Wakanda?
Just why Riri might be in Wakanda in the first place is interesting enough in and of itself, but for now it looks like fans will see Ironheart suit up well ahead of her first appearance, which is still undated. Ironheart is now in production and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to hit theaters on November 11th.
