REVIEW: ‘SHANG-CHI’ Sets a New Bar for Origin Stories

It’s not hyperbole to say that Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is a movie that I’ve waited nearly my entire life to see. I fell in love with the pulpy, walk-the-Earth character as a kid and anticipated his MCU debut long before any official announcements were made. I’ve followed the development of the film closely and joyfully as Marvel Studios followed through on their promise to make this film a vehicle for an Asian cast, crew, and creatives. And what Marvel Studios created is something not only truly unlike they have ever put on a big screen, but also arguably their best effort at recreating a character, his supporting characters, and the world which they inhabit. The result is an origin film that rivals (and connects with) 2008’s Iron Man, introduces one of the MCU’s most well-developed antagonists, and sets up a future that promises greater things for the film’s core cast.

New Shang-Chi Trailer Shows Tony Leung As the Real Mandarin

As advertised, the film introduces us to a brand new Marvel hero in Shang-Chi and addresses the origins of the Ten Rings organization which has inhabited the Marvel Cinematic Universe from its inception. The film’s prologue tells the story of the organization, the man who founded it, and the ten rings of power that have helped the organization secretly shape the history of the MCU. While we get plenty of backstory on the organization, the nature of the rings themselves remains nebulous even as the film concludes, though they remain integral to the film, almost a character unto themselves. Even as the MCU charges into the future, it continues to satisfyingly establish events set in its past. We’ve seen it done more frequently of late and it serves the purpose of informing fans that Shang-Chi has spent a decade of his young life trying to hide from his father, his family, and his fate. Director Destin Daniel Cretton should be lauded for the way he cleverly uses the prologue and the early moments of the first act to set the audience up for their expectations to be subverted.

Structurally, the film deftly meshes three disparate acts into an incredibly imaginative and fertile plot that never feels drawn out despite the film’s 2+ hour runtime. The first act feels like a martial arts short paying homage to legends like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. The second part plays out as an ever-evolving family tragedy on the level of Shakespeare’s King Lear before the film’s final act delivers an amazing fantasy story worthy of the Marvel comic book title’s rich history. Together, they tell the story of how love can both create or destroy, how power can both corrupt or enable and how, when the family is involved, there might not be such a thing as a point of no return. The film is beautifully written in service of these things and directed to emphasize them. The creatives behind the film deserve accolades for working together to deliver a film that manages to invoke empathy, sympathy, and apathy in the audience. When you’re watching this film, expect to experience a wide range of emotions.

Shang-Chi y la leyenda de los diez anillos' recibe el primer tráiler - Olhar Digital

If there’s anything that keeps the film from ascending into the absolute upper echelon of the 25 Marvel Cinematic Universe films it is, unfortunately, that the title character is, at best, the second most interesting character in the film. The great news is that this is in no way the fault of star Simu Liu, who is positioned to become one of the faces of the MCU over the next 5 years. Liu takes full ownership of Shang-Chi, a character who has a lot to do in this film and for whom there are clearly incredibly large-scale plans moving forward. Liu absolutely nails what he’s given here: he is equal parts charismatic, emotional, and an action star. He’s probably Marvel’s most instantly loveable hero since Chadwick Boseman‘s T’Challa. Also noteworthy is Liu‘s incredible chemistry with Awkwafina, who plays Shang-Chi’s attached-at-the-hip bestie, Katy. Marvel Studios targeted Awkwafina for the role early and her MCU original character – who experiences all the film’s big twists and turns right along with the audience – gets her own time to shine. She and Liu will continue to be paired together in the future and that’s something that’s going to be fun to see develop as they meet some of the universe’s established characters.

In reality, however, this film could have been titled Wenwu and The Legend of The Ten Rings because Hong Kong legend Tony Leung owns every second of screen time. Without getting spoilery, he is technically the film’s protagonist and his character arc is befitting of that title. Cretton creatively uses flashbacks to alter the audience’s perception of Wenwu (and indeed of more than one character) much to the advancement of not only the plot of the film but to the overall strength of the story. His use of non-linear storytelling elevates the cast and the film in an incredibly crafty way that can make one hope that he’s negotiated a long-term deal with the studio. His investment into these characters and this world bodes incredibly well for the future of the franchise(s) this origin film may spawn.

Shang-Chi's Mandarin Isn't What Marvel Comics Fans Expect, Teases Producer

The greatest payoff of this investment is Leung‘s Wenwu: an entirely original character derived from Marvel Studios’ alchemical task of combining classic and stereotypically offensive characters, the Mandarin and Fu Manchu, into a brand new and beautifully complex character. The trailers intentionally tell a very specific story about Wenwu, that story is a lie. Leung‘s Wenwu is the furthest thing from a boring, one-note villain. In fact, he arguably has the film’s greatest and most fulfilling character arc. One struggles to find a comparable one-off villain in the rich history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the trailers prepared us for that martial arts action and father-son showdown, they did leave a couple of surprises for the audience. The most pleasant surprise of the film was the performance of Meng’er Zhang as Shang-Chi’s estranged sister, Xialing. Kept in the background by her father’s old ways, Xialing decided to carve her own path without her father and brother. Zhang played Xialing with confidence and an edge that made her ascension in the film feel both earned and deserved. As the film’s central plot resolves, Xialing finds herself positioned to be a key player in the MCU’s near future, perhaps even on the same level as her long-lost brother.

Shang-Chi Tickets Go on Sale With Marvel Legends Teaser

The film is also surprised with its hard lean into fantasy. Promotional material and merchandise indicated that the film would feature the Great Protector and some other mythological beasts, though there was no real indication of how large a role those fantastical elements would play in the film. Shang-Chi and Xialing’s mother, Jiang Li, brought to life gracefully and beautifully by Fala Chen, serves to introduce fans to the other-dimensional realm of Ta-Lo where the film’s resolution plays out. Ta-Lo showcases a number of mythological beasts, including Morris, a cute faceless critter who aids our heroes and serves to help Shang-Chi connect to his secret and sacred inheritance. The final act features action, unlike anything the MCU has ever put to film against a beautiful backdrop of plates from across Asia.

The big showdown, which features breathtaking action and heartbreaking consequences, feels like an anime of Donghua feature brought to life. The creative team took some big swings during the final battle and should be applauded for being brave enough to make something so divergent from what Marvel fans are used to seeing.

Shang-Chi trailer hints at classic Marvel villain's return - CNET

A common complaint of mine is that Marvel Studios origin stories have often spent too much time setting up the future of their titular characters at the expense of telling the story at hand. Much like the aforementioned Iron Man, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings saves the setup for the mid and post-credit scenes, devoting almost the entirety of its run time to the development of the characters and the curation of the plot.

The dedication to the story and its characters, the exploration of genres and pathways previously unexplored in the 13-year history of the MCU, and the fulfillment of a promise to make films that represent the world we inhabit give Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings a firm foundation for success, even as the global box office climate continues to be volatile. For me, the true measure of success for an MCU film is its rewatchability, and this film promises to be one that fans will want to revisit over the years; the action shots and loveable characters make that all but a certainty. As the MCU grows and evolves, fans can only hope to have wonderful first entries such as this be a part of it.

  • Splash Mountain’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Revamp to Continue Disney Film’s Story

Splash Mountain’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Revamp to Continue Disney Film’s Story

It looks like Disney’s 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog is getting an unlikely sequel. The story of Tiana and Naveen will continue in the form of Splash Mountain’s redesign. Walt Disney’s Parks division unveiled brand new concept art and even story details on the franchise’s continuation. Guests will join Tiana, as she plans a Mardi Gras celebration with Naveen and the loveable trumpet-playing alligator Louis.

    Princess and the Frog

They’ve also unveiled that the ride will include original songs inspired by the original’s soundtrack. Their goal was to incorporate the culture of New Orleans into the ride’s “look and feel, from sounds to visuals.” They’ve also commissioned paintings by artist Sharika Mahdi to truly bring the conceptualization to life.

The first announcement of the Splash Mountain revamp came back in June 2020 due to its design being based on the controversial 1946 film Song of the South. Jungle Cruise, which recently also got a film adaptation, also got some rework regarding questionable depictions of native people. There are still no official opening dates given at Disneyland or Disney World.

It’s not the only franchise expansion for The Princess and the Frog, as Tiana is getting her very own series on Disney+. Not much is known about the project besides the fact that it’ll be a long-form musical comedy. Reports indicate it will also act as a sequel to the original film. If it does, the series might even reference the Mardi Gras party.

  • ‘Fast and Furious 10’ Sets 2023 Release

‘Fast and Furious 10’ Sets 2023 Release

It hasn’t been too long since the ninth entry of the Fast and Furious franchise was released. F9 was the beginning of the end, as we’ve learned that they’re already working on the final entries of the mainline Fast Saga. With the pandemic delaying the launch of the previous entry, there was some uncertainty when we can expect the next film but the wait is over, as Entertainment Weekly unveiled that it will release April 7th, 2023.

It has been some time since they confirmed that Justin Lin will end the franchise with his two latest films. F9 was pretty much the set-up to the franchise’s two-film finale, which are believed to be filming back-to-back Vin Diesel discussed that the reason we’re getting two films was that they had so many stories set up that couldn’t get shown in just one. There hasn’t been a confirmation which actors will return, but as EW highlights, we can expect the usual suspects.

There has been a fallout with the franchise in recent memory due to Dwayne Johnson‘s beef with Diesel. There have been hints he’ll continue the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off series. So, while the Fast and Furious films come to an end, we might see various spin-offs come from the final two films. Even as one franchise ends, there’s a lot of potential for its future.

  • Leaked ‘Mission Impossible 7’ Set Video Shows Steam Train Drive Off Cliff

Leaked ‘Mission Impossible 7’ Set Video Shows Steam Train Drive Off Cliff

Many films have faced various delays throughout the pandemic. One of them was the highlight anticipated sequel to Mission Impossible: Fallout that would continue the story of Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt, who is an agent of the IMF, the Impossible Missions Force. Christopher McQuarrie is continuing his work from the previous two entries, which started with Rogue Nation in 2015, to film the next two installments.

The seventh film is slated to release in May of 2022 with the sequel filming back-to-back for 2023. It looks like production has resumed after a COVID-induced delay with the team driving a steam train off a cliff in the Derbyshire quarry. The Daily Mail shared some photos from the sequence with Twitter user @cherrystreet71 offering a video on the stunt scene in action.

    https://twitter.com/cherrystreet71/status/1429046858505195521

Tom Cruise was reportedly on set and it seems like he may have jumped on the helicopter that can be briefly seen taking off before the train hits the cliff. It’s uncertain if he was on the train, but the actor has been very open about doing his own stunts in these projects. Yet, he may also have just been part of the filming crew trying to get the sequence on film. The Daily Mail shared a picture of him in supposedly all-black alongside the production crew.

Big entrance: Tom was in all black as he stood near a golf buggy

The Mission Impossible series has been famous for its use of practical elements, which are spearheaded by its production team and Cruise‘s involvement. It’s not every day you get to witness a train drive off a cliff and it seems to fall into a pit of water, which might be there to dampen the fall. There’s no report if the train was an old steam engine they purchased for this sequence, but it’s likely they built a replica for this sequence. It’s not uncommon, as Kurt Russell famously destroyed the real 150-year old guitar rather than the replica in a sequence of The Hateful Eight.

  • ‘BLACK WIDOW’ Lawsuit Continues As Scarlet Johansson’s Lawyer Calls Out Disney

‘BLACK WIDOW’ Lawsuit Continues As Scarlet Johansson’s Lawyer Calls Out Disney

Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow lawsuit caught the world’s attention when she moved against Disney on their new release model through Disney+ Premier Access. Believing it undermined her film’s success, she made the bold move. After some public shouting matches, Disney made the first move towards the lawsuit with them starting an arbitration against the actress. Not only did it offer some more insight into the actual lawsuit but forced Disney’s hand to release their Disney+ income as a result.

Black Widow“: Feminismus, Sexismus und Familientragödie – Marvel wird mutig (Kritik & Stream) - Rolling Stone

So, the interesting aspect about this lawsuit is that it’s not against Marvel but Disney. It constitutes that Disney allegedly induced the Marvel division to breach the initial contract on a theatre-only release. As such, the subsidiary is excluded from the lawsuit. Johansson proclaims she was promised an exclusive release while Disney states that the film was made available on 9,000 screens with the contract only including above 1,500. Her attorney, John Berlinski, gave the following statement on Disney’s move:

After initially, responding to this litigation with a misogynistic attack against Scarlett Johansson, Disney is now, predictably, trying to hide its misconduct in a confidential arbitration. Why is Disney so afraid of litigating this case in public? Because it knows that Marvel’s promises to give Black Widow a typical theatrical release ‘like its other films’ had everything to do with guaranteeing that Disney wouldn’t cannibalize box office receipts in order to boost Disney+ subscriptions. Yet that is exactly what happened – and we look forward to presenting the overwhelming evidence that provides it.

    John Berlinski

The litigation did offer some insight into the film’s current standing on the Disney+ streaming service. Supposedly download retail and streaming garnered the film a total income of $125M. That is on top of the $367M that it made in theaters worldwide. So, the film currently stands at a strong $492M with it definitely passing the $500M mark if counting the streaming income. There is no certainty if it will release in China, which could boost it to pass the $600M mark.

Black Widow« mit Scarlett Johansson: Dieser Film ist wie ein verdammt guter James Bond – ohne James Bond - DER SPIEGEL

For now, the lawsuit is not a good look for Disney, as they push forward with this strategy. There was the highlight of the contract’s wording benefiting the company than its talent. Plus, the mention of a confirmation that it’ll release in theatres back in 2019 which was before COVID changed everything. Both sides are forced to represent their perspective. So, there’s no real “winner” in these kinds of scenarios. It’ll be curious to see if Disney can take the case out of the public eye moving forward.

  • UPDATE: Mischa Green Confirmed to Pen Jurnee Smollett-led ‘BLACK CANARY’ Film

UPDATE: Mischa Green Confirmed to Pen Jurnee Smollett-led ‘BLACK CANARY’ Film

UPDATE: Well, it didn’t take long for Cinelinx’s story to get confirmed, as The Hollywood Reporter and Collider both confirmed that Misha Green is, in fact, working on a Black Canary project. Producer Sur Kroll is also set to return. Jurnee Smollett will reprise the role from the Birds of Prey film.

    Source: Collider, Hollywood Reporter

It looks like those rumors surrounding a Jurnee Smollett spin-off from Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn might have gotten a bit more traction. Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison shared a story that Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green may have joined the project to write the script. Their sources share that originally this project was going to be a series before moving to a direct-to-HBO Max film being the focus.

It’s not the first time a DC project is taking this strategy as Batgirl and Blue Beetle are in development as streaming-exclusive projects. If there’s something to these rumors, Jurnee Smollett would return to play the character. There’s no word if these rumors turn out to be true if it’s a direct continuation of the film or even acts as a prequel. We’ve gotten teased her mother had the same ability, which might get explored in more detail in a film.

Yet, if it turns out to be a sequel, they might explore her time with the titular Birds of Prey, which formed at the end of the first film. It’s surprising they wouldn’t give the team a sequel before splintering the group, but next to Harley Quinn, she was one of the big draws for the release. Smollett‘s work on Lovecraft Country also might be a reason why Green may have joined the project. So, we’ll see if there’s an announcement coming our way during this year’s DC FanDome.

EXCLUSIVE: Bill Skarsgård Set to Star in Sam Raimi Production ‘BOY KILLS WORLD’

Sam Raimi is currently on everyone’s radar for his work on the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. It’s his first return to direct a feature film since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. In the meantime, he’s been working on smaller projects, such as directing episodes of Rake and Ash vs. Evil Dead. He’s also been working a lot as a producer on various projects. He has focused on the horror genre quite a bit throughout his career. We can exclusively share that he is currently also working on a film titled Boy Kills WorldMoritz Mohr takes on directing duties, and we can also share that it already has a talent attached with Bill Skarsgård.

Die Wahrheit über Bill Skarsgårds It Audition - News24viral

The film will follow the story of a man named Boy, whose parents are guerrilla fighters. His loving sister Mina kept him safe in their war-torn country. Tragically, their country’s tyrant, Hilda Van Der Koy, killed his entire family. Seeking revenge, Boy seeks help from a Shaman, who’ll train him in various ways of fighting. • ‘ETERNALS’ Funko Pop Revealed Including a Jumbo-Sized Celestial Funko

‘ETERNALS’ Funko Pop Revealed Including a Jumbo-Sized Celestial Funko

Just an hour ago, the first Eternals Funko Pop found its way online. It looks like Marvel didn’t waste any time, and the rest got shared by Yahoo. It’s quite an extensive list of Funkos that includes our main cast and the main antagonist, Kro. He’s not the only Deviant in the list, as the four-legged one got included as a GameStop exclusive. The highlight is a jumbo-sized one of their creators, the Celestials, who we saw in the latest trailer towering from the camera’s perspective. Sadly, it looks like the second Celestial showcased is not getting a Funko, but this is just the first wave.

Funko's collection of 'Eternals' figures includes several vinyl Pop! figures and accessories. (Photo: Funko)

Overall, the designs are unique even among Marvel’s usual fare. Curiously, these Funkos offer a better look at the Deviants, who seem to share a very similar visual with light green feet. Their bodies seem like intertwined tentacles, which might even get a story reason. The film is taking a unique direction from the original comics. So, we might be in for quite a few surprises once the film arrives this November.

The Celestial is definitely a highlight. It looks like it might be the same one we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy but without the giant armor. Perhaps we only truly meet these creators of the galaxy in an opening sequence, which sets us up for the story. Even the Funko Pop tries to highlight their very otherworldly designs and it’s sad we don’t get the green Celestial teased in the trailer as well. It would make for a great collection, but who knows if we’ll get more in the future.

  • ‘THE MARVELS’ Production Heading to Tropea, Italy

‘THE MARVELS’ Production Heading to Tropea, Italy

It looks like The Marvel‘s production is going to Italy, as the governor of Tropea, Giovanni Macrì announced that the film will be heading to the Italian town to shoot a scene for the film. It’ll start production there on August 27th but no end date has been announced. They also don’t go into detail about who will be involved with the shoot, as it’s also uncertain if what they are filming will take place in this town, or it might even become the background for an alien planet.

Tropea is the "Borgo dei Borghi" of Italy! A Top destination for your boat holidays! - Boatsandblog - Boatsandgo

Tropea is a resort located in the province of Vibo Valentiana in Calabria. It even won the “most beautiful village in Italy” award back in 2021. Now what is interesting is that there’s a lot of history surrounding the city, as the location is where Hercules returned after finishing his labors. The Marvel universe is no stranger to the Greek half-god, and it would be unexpected if he appears in the film.

Yet, there’s also the possibility that it connects to Nick Fury. Perhaps he is there on vacation after traveling through space for some time. At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, we see him enjoying a fake beach on a holodeck before revealing he’s on a ship with Skrulls. Perhaps he got tired of it and wanted to enjoy the real thing before meeting back up with Carol. We know Samuel L. Jackson is returning for the film. We’ll see once the film releases, but it’s nice to see Marvel Studios expanding their filming locations.

‘ETERNALS’: First Look at Sersi Funko Pop Leaks

Eternals just released its second and final trailer, giving us another look at
Chloé Zhao‘s century-spanning superhero epic. The film is set to introduce a wide array of new heroes to the MCU. With so many new characters on their way, a wave of Funko products is almost inevitable, especially for a movie of this scale.

A while back we reported on a leaked release list from Funko that included info on upcoming waves of Pops for Marvel, including pops for Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and of course Eternals. A new leak for the upcoming wave of Funko Pops! for Marvel’s Eternals has given us our very first look at one of the figures in that wave, Gemma Chan’s Sersi.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CSzIUH2MnyB/

The figure features Sersi in her traditional Eternals garb and looks to be holding a piece of wood. She’s in the process of using her matter manipulation abilities on it. There currently is no release date that has been set for this or the rest of the wave. With the film’s release steadily approaching, merch and marketing should start rolling out for the film in the coming months.

The list that first featured the leaks surrounding the wave of Eternals figures did not disclose names but did reveal there would be fifteen figures in the first wave. They’ll be joined by a 10″ figure. It’s not hard to tell most of the wave will be made up of the core members of the team like Ikaris, Phastos, Ajak, Makkari, Gilgamesh, Kingo, Sprite, and Druig with the 10″ figure most likely Arishem The Judge who seems to play a larger role in this film.
