  • Scoop Culture All But Ruined ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

Scoop Culture All But Ruined ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

Afro-Latinos (read Black Latinos) don’t have many heroes in superhero movie mediums. We have seen a lot of cis-hetero white dudes carry the superhero mantle, be redeemed for their mistakes, and lead teams with reckless abandon. Those same dudes review-bombed two really good women-led superhero films, which really highlights how they believe the superhero space just belongs to them. A lot of those same dudes reviewed T’Challa’s first appearance (“what is with the horns whenever he’s on screen”, they said, like a superhero theme playing when a hero was onscreen was somehow an anomaly) and 2018’s Black Panther with a serious lack of cultural-competency. We heard that it wasn’t very good, wasn’t Marvel’s best, and how they didn’t really understand Killmonger’s beef with America.

It was strange, word to Stephen, but expected.

In a post-Black Panther world, we saw Marvel position T’Challa as the man who would lead and influence the next iterations of the Avengers. It was not a mistake for the final stand versus Thanos to take place in Wakanda, or for the first person to walk through the portal to be her King. Whereas the first version of the flagship group included absolutely zero diversity, this next generation would be made up of not just the Black Panther, but a new Captain America, two LGBTQ+ heroes, a Muslim mutant, a Jewish protector (unfortunately played by a Guatemalan actor, but progress brings missteps sometimes) with mental health issues, and two Black, armored Avengers. With diverse heroes, we were bound to get diverse villains, too: Black Panther gave us our first non-white villain and Marvel then cast an absolute legend in Tony Leung in a movie with a primarily Asian cast. Progress was slow but steady, and people were not happy. Still, for us Black folks, T’Challa represented so much more than just a seat at the table: he was the guy the table was built for.

When he died, there was this absurd movement to recast T’Challa led by A LOT of neckbearded cis-hetero white dudes. This seemed to coincide with the rise of scoopers who would throw so much at the wall with the hope that clout would follow if even 20% was right. They could then say that Marvel changed what they got wrong, which means they were never wrong, and rinse and repeat for the next movie. The sequel to Black Panther brought even more of that: we heard of an imaginary scene with a Fantastic Four villain making their debut, how it would end with the Thunderbolts descending on Wakanda, and how Lake Bell was playing a bigger character than what she really ended up playing. It was frustrating but expected. I treat “leaks” like fan fiction anyway and love coming back to them to see what they got wrong and whether there is ever any accountability. You guessed it: there isn’t any.

However, there should be, and it was during the lead-up to Wakanda Forever ‘s release date that I first thought “this is some bullshit.” If you’ve seen Wakanda Forever, you know that there is only one tag after the movie concludes, and it is a pretty important deal. I will not spoil it here, but needless to say it is one of the more impactful scenes Marvel has ever added both in terms of what it means for the future of the MCU and how it ties into the theme of Phase 4: grief and legacy are always intertwined, and as we try to grapple with those who aren’t here we have to come to grips with how we will remember them. Wakanda Forever, in that regard, almost gives us a front-row seat to the homegoing of T’Challa and lets us remember him for what he is and what he could’ve been. The tag at the end of the movie, then, acts as a way for us to see a future where the grief has settled. To have that moment ruined a full year before the movie came out would’ve been bad enough on its own. To have the choice to ruin it be justified as something fans needed to know made it substantially worse. That scene was so beautifully executed, but to have experienced that scene with no prior knowledge would’ve hit substantially differently. Nobody would’ve had less clout had it not been shared prematurely, and as a man of color and father, it hit a little differently than your normal Marvel stinger. Because of those two things, Wakanda Forever hit differently than your normal Marvel movie. Chadwick deserved for us to experience it the right way.

Scoopers will go back to ruining movies: they can’t help themselves, after all. It is telling that a Native American site owner is letting me write and publish this, and I’m eternally grateful to Charles for giving me this platform. It’s also telling that, even with us knowing things, we’ve never ruined a movie for anyone. The goal for us is to write about the stuff we’ve loved since we were kids. I thought that was the reason we all started doing this, anyway. Cheers to Black Panther, and to the Scoopers Who Almost Ruined it: I hope you chew gravel.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Pulls in 10th Highest Opening Day at the Box Office

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Pulls in 10th Highest Opening Day at the Box Office

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is pulling in some strong numbers domestically, as it has now reached $84M in its Friday opening, which includes the $28M from Thursday previews. That would put it on a course to potentially pull in around $184M domestically over the weekend but Veteran’s Day is making an exact calculation somewhat difficult. It does seem hard to say if it’ll pass the first Black Panther‘s opening of $202M, it should not be downplayed how big this opening is considering a November release.

This opening is the tenth-highest opening day ever for a film in the domestic market. Of course, Veteran’s Day could either be a boosting factor to push it beyond its regular intake but Saturday could be a deciding factor on how it performs. It should also be noted that without previews, the film made more than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was at $54.7M while it pulled in $56M.It also might pull in the biggest November opening day for November on IMAX screens. Either way, it’s likely to take the record of the highest-grossing weekend in November, beating out The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at $148M.

It should also be pointed out that the first Black Panther opened to $75.9M on a Friday, which had an A+ CinemaScore pulling it through the weekend. So, Wakanda Forever could still pull through with a slightly higher opening and a slightly lower A CinemaScore, which still holds well for its legs. As of now, the film is going to open around $325M+ worldwide. The Korean market isn’t as powerful an opening this time around, but that could be due to two key factors: the first film heavily featured South Korea as a location and the country is currently mourning a recent tragedy.

For those believing it failed if it doesn’t pass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ $187.4M opening, it should be considered that the first 2022 Marvel film was sold as an Avenger-sized blockbuster and opened in the summer. It was heavily frontloaded and with a B+ CinemaScore, likely due to its horror influences, it faced a harsh drop in its second weekend. That’ll be the most interesting test going out this weekend for Wakanda Forever. Plus, the film faces the unique challenge of losing its lead in Chadwick Boseman, which was a heavy focus of the film.

  • What the ‘Wakanda Forever’ Post-Credit Scene Means for the Future of the Franchise

What the ‘Wakanda Forever’ Post-Credit Scene Means for the Future of the Franchise

If you thought you were done crying when the credits for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever began rolling, you were simply fooling yourself. As newly-minted Black Panther Shuri symbolically moved past her grief by burning her mourning garments, the post-credit scene to the film stirred a whole new batch of emotions. If you haven’t seen the film yet and wish not to be spoiled, turn back now as we’ll take a look at what the surprising PCS might mean for the future of the franchise.

The PCS reveals that Nakia hasn’t just been hiding out in Haiti mourning the loss of her lover, King T’Challa but rather has been raising their son, Prince T’Challa. As Shuri and the audience learn all about the royal son, who goes by the name Toussaint in Haiti, it becomes clear that the young Prince has been taken away from the craziness of succession in Wakanda but is being prepared to ascend to the throne one day. Only 6 years old, Prince T’Challa has a long road ahead of him before he’s ready to become King and Protector of Wakanda, not to mention the backlash and political ramifications of revealing his existence to Wakanda. What could his existence mean for the future of the Black Panther franchise?

According to Executive Producer Nate Moore, there are multiple D+ projects being developed within and adjacent to the World of Wakanda. The events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could easily lead to several such projects. While fans might be familiar with rumors of an Okoye-centric project (which could become a Midnight Angels), the PCS of Wakanda Forever could turn into another project sometime down the road. With Marvel Studios Multiverse Saga slate pretty full, there might not be room in it for a third Black Panther film and director Ryan Coogler isn’t quite ready to make the decision about whether he wants to sign on for it or not, but the longer it takes for Black Panther 3 to hit theaters, the older Prince T’Challa gets to be. Is there room for a streaming project about Prince T’Challa between now and when Black Panther 3 hits theaters? Or, perhaps it’s better to ask if there’s room for one between now and when Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters?

Ultimately, the PCS of Wakanda Forever doesn’t truly feel like it’s setting up much of anything as much as it’s making a statement in line with the film’s subtitle: the legacy of T’Challa, and Wakanda, will continue on. With the deaths of T’Challa and Ramonda, Shuri stood as the last member of the family who had ruled Wakanda since their ancestor, Bashenga, became the first Black Panther and united four of the five tribes of Wakanda into one nation. Prince T’Challa serves as a promise that the line will continue for another generation. But will audiences ever see the Prince become the Black Panther?

It’s a tough question to answer because, in the comics, 616-T’Challa doesn’t have a son. Some alternate universe T’Challas have had children, but for the most part any story involving Prince T’Challa will be an original. And again, whether or not those stories end up being told is a big question. It’s possible, maybe even likely, that while Marvel Studios chose not to recast Chadwick Boseman in Wakanda Forever, the potential to do so down the road a few years in Avengers: Secret Wars remains tempting. A post-Secret Wars MCU could potentially be built around one new universe in which characters from others find themselves together. In that case, a new actor coming in as a Variant T’Challa provides opportunity for Marvel Studios to have the character working alongside the Fantastic Four and, yes, the X-Men where a potential relationship with Storm can finally come to the big screen.

That’s not to say Marvel Studios may not chose to keep Prince T’Challa in the plans. A D+ series about the young Prince, his mother and aunt could be a way to continue to explore the rich history of Wakanda or another film, 5+ years down the road set in Wakanda could end up exploring the changing political landscape of the country, a theme that’s often been explored in the comics. So while it’d be great to “know” just what Prince T’Challa’s appearance means for the future of Wakanda, all it really does is ensure that there is one.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Breaks Marvel Studios’ B CinemaScore Streak

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Breaks Marvel Studios’ B CinemaScore Streak

Marvel Studios has been doing quite well at the box office, but still faced some hurdles in its more experimental phase. Phase 4 has seen quite a few more distinct projects than in the past, which also meant that fan reception wasn’t always on board. Since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios’ productions have been getting B CinemaScores rather than the usual A they’ve built up over the years. Eternals being the lowest they’ve had in a long time with a B while Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended up with a B+ score.

The only one that was able to break that streak was the co-developed Spider-Man: No Way Home which also had a strong nostalgia effect at play but also was technically published by Sony. Luckily, it seems that the B CinemaScore streak has come to an end as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has received an A grade from audiences.

    https://twitter.com/CinemaScore/status/1591326356927045634

Early indicators hint that it may have been close to getting an A+ rating as it received five stars from 83% of audiences according to PostTrack, which is not too far from No Way Home‘s 89%. It’s a great sign that audiences are still enjoying Marvel films at the moment, as the latest phase rolls out. Plus, it bodes well for the film’s legs in the long run even if A+ could’ve pushed it even further. It’s not surprising though that after an event film like Avengers: Endgame, people would feel a bit of a sophomore slump like with any long-running series, but Marvel is playing the long game by testing out new waters throughout this phase.

  • David Leitch’s ‘The Fall Guy’ Adds ‘Ted Lasso’ Star

David Leitch’s ‘The Fall Guy’ Adds ‘Ted Lasso’ Star

David Leitch has been quite busy making a name for himself with various projects ever since his work on 2014’s John Wick. He went on to tackle Atomic Blonde, and entered the world of blockbusters with Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw before his recent release with Bullet Train. He’s also been quite busy as a second unit director on various productions, which includes Captain Ameria: Civil War, The Wolverine, and many more. Now, he’s already eyeing his next project with The Fall Guy, an adaptation of an iconic 1980s TV series with a new twist.

In the Hollywood Reporter latest Heat Vision blog, they have revealed that Ted Lasso star, Hannah Waddingham, has now seemingly joined the production. The film has already amassed a stellar cast with Aaron Talyor-Johnson, Stephanie Hsu, Winston Duke, Emily Blunt, and Ryan Gosling as its leading star. Production is already filming in Australia, so if this isn’t the final casting news we might see some more in the coming weeks.

The upcoming film will establish its own story based on the original, as instead of having a stuntman as a bounty hunter on the side, the film will focus on a mystery of a missing star, which Drew Pearce, played by Gosling, has to find again. Waddingham will take on the role of producer of the movie that is facing production trouble after its main star went missing, who’ll be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The base concept sounds enthralling and could make for a great blockbuster addition to cinemas.

  • RUMOR: MCU’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Eyeing January 2024 Production Start

RUMOR: MCU’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Eyeing January 2024 Production Start

Marvel Studios is pushing forward on its next phase of films yet they are also preparing to start work on the final phase of the Multiverse Saga. Set for November 2024, Marvel Studios is ready to introduce its take on the iconic First Family of Marvel, the Fantastic Four. Initially, Spider-Man director Jon Watts was set to tackle the adaptation but passed on the project for a new Star Wars series. In his place, WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman took over directing duties with Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer penning the script for their take on the Fantastic Four.

While not many more details are known, it does seem like a new rumor has found its way online, as well-known scooper Daniel Richtman has seemingly teased that they are already eyeing a production start by January. Well, January 2024 to be exact with a whole year still going. It does also match its upcoming February 14th release date in 2025, as it would give the production plenty of time to film and go through post-production.

This production rumor could also be our key indicator of when we might expect casting announcements. It does seem likely that we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we find out who will don the roles of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and Thing. Of course, they could already have locked in someone for the role given the long-time commitment but it does seem like they’ll wait it out until we get any official news on that film.

  • Super No More: ‘Like ‘Black Adam’, ‘Wakanda Forever’ Won’t Hit Theaters in China

Super No More: ‘Like ‘Black Adam’, ‘Wakanda Forever’ Won’t Hit Theaters in China

Guard your pockets, Hollywood. China likes to hit where it hurts.

It’s no secret that China is heavy on the control of the content that its citizens can access. Superhero movies are no different. The move to restrict these movies from hitting theatres costs studios tens of millions.

Despite allowing the first Black Panther movie to be distributed, the latest installment is denied without much insight into the decision. Several in the industry suspect that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is facing backlash due to the depiction of the character Aneka, played by Michaela Cole and fellow Dora bodyguard Ayo, played by Florence Kasumba, in a gay relationship. Other movies like Thor: Love and Thunder and Pixar’s Lightyear have met the same fate.

While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever likely survives without that revenue, Black Adam needed a serious boost. The film has earned $321 million globally, but production costs were a whopping $200 million. In addition, there is suspicion that this film is facing a battle because of the inclusion of Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan posted a photo two years ago with the Dalai Lama, a public figure viewed in Beijing as a “dangerous separatist.” In years past, the Chinese box office for superhero films worked out to be a significant portion of the global take. • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Outpacing the Original at the Box Office After Thursday Night Previews

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Outpacing the Original at the Box Office After Thursday Night Previews

As the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever drew nearer, box office estimates for the film continued to rise. Most projections have the film pulling in between $175-185M domestically over the opening weekend, but last night’s previews may indicate those numbers are a bit on the low side. According to a trade report, the sequel opened with a massive $28M Thursday, good for 15th all-time at the box office.

2018’s Black Panther took in $25M, which served as an early indicator that its opening weekend predictions may have been a bit low. That film eventually went on to rake $202M over its opening weekend, making Wakanda Forever’s first weekend worth watching. Critics have responded well to it overall and social media buzz around the film seems to be growing after early sentiment that audiences may lose interest following the death of Chadwick Boseman and the choice not to recast T’Challa.

Though most estimates had it lower, there were some experts who felt Wakanda Forever could open close to $200M, which would put give it the largest opening weekend of 2022, topping Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film, which introduces one of Marvel Comics’ oldest characters, Namor, pits the nations of Wakanda and Talokan against one another in the wake of the loss of T’Challa, King and Black Panther of Wakanda.

  • RUMOR: 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Will Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

RUMOR: 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Will Appear in ‘Deadpool 3’

Deadpool 3 is shaping up to be one of the great mysteries in Marvel movie history. Delayed for years by the Disney-Fox merger, development on the threequel is now fully underway, but more questions arise with every piece of information that emerges about the project. Despite being the third film in a series that began as part of Fox’s X-Men universe, the movie will be set firmly in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, a known fact complicated by the confirmed appearance of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine – the face of Fox’s former franchise. As if that wasn’t enough, another recent rumor has Owen Wilson‘s Mobius M. Mobius, Agent of the Time Variance Authority, playing a large supporting role in the picture. All signs have been pointing to a grand, multiversal adventure for Ryan Reynolds‘ titular mercenary, and the latest whispers surrounding the movie are no different.

According to industry insider Daniel RPK, the events of Deadpool 3 will see Wade Wilson re-visit Fox’s cinematic worlds. While many likely assumed audiences would get one last look at the X-Men universe, there is apparently also potential for the famed antihero to pop into other Fox-based properties as well. In particular, RPK mentions the world of 2005’s Fantastic Four as a temporary landing spot for Deadpool. It’s not made clear just how big of a role the universe would play in the story, or even if the team themselves will actually appear, but the idea of Deadpool running around a series of films long-forgotten by popular media is a fairly tantalizing one. It also would not be the first time the Deadpool films attempted a crossover with the Fantastic Four, as the team from 2015’s disaster reboot Fant4stic were once slated to cameo in Deadpool 2.

Directed by Tim Story, Fantastic Four starred Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and Ioan Gruffudd as the iconic superhero team. Several years before the emergence of the MCU, Fantastic Four was one of Marvel’s biggest financial hits and spawned a less-beloved sequel titled Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. At the time, the adaptation was not a favorite among die-hard fans, but countless years of failed further reboots have gifted the film a renewed appreciation.

  • Lewis Tan Teases Insane ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

Lewis Tan Teases Insane ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

New Line’s Mortal Kombat reboot was a hidden gem in 2021, releasing simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during a time when the future of the theatrical experience was very much in doubt. Although fans found some of the changes to the lore controversial, the movie was a success with audiences, finding enough financial gain for Warner Bros., New Line’s parent company, to greenlight a sequel. Since its announcement, however, very little has been revealed about the status of Mortal Kombat 2 or its plot details.

The first film saw original character Cole Young, a descendant of Hiroyuki Sanada‘s Scorpion played by Lewis Tan, fending off attacks from the villainous forces of Chin Han‘s Shang Tsung alongside other heroes from Earthrealm. The ending tees up a sequel on a much larger scale, with Shang Tsung promising to retaliate his defeat with armies and a victorious Young heading off to find Hollywood movie star, Johnny Cage. Speaking exclusively with Comic Book, Tan confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 would be a grander tale than the first installment and that the film was still in development despite the many recent shake-ups at Warner Bros.:

Well, it impacts a lot, but not really us in particular because New Line is the studio that is under the branch of Warner Bros. But they’re very happy with the movie, and obviously, it performed really well. It’s one of the most-viewed films of their Warner Bros. slate, even though it came out at the worst time ever possible. But no, we’re full steam ahead. And now, we have Ed Boon with us as well, so we got the stamp of approval from the legend himself. [Number 2] is just going to be absolutely insane. Way bigger.

    Lewis Tan

Tan also mentions that franchise creator Ed Boon is now on board with the film series, after not being much involved with, or super supportive of, the 2021 adaptation. That would indicate that Boon likes what he sees from the sequel, and hopefully means the future of the films is very bright. Simon McQuoid will return to direct Mortal Kombat 2, with Moon Knight scribe Jeremy Slater working on the script.
