    REVIEW: ‘Echoes’ is a Misfire

Note: This review contains mild spoilers.

Netflix’s Echoes has all the ingredients for a compelling drama, but none of them ever come together to make for anything satisfying.

Echoes tells the story of identical twins, Leni and Gina, both played by Michelle Monaghan. The twins have secretly spent their lives switching places since they were children, sharing everything – resulting in double lives as adults. However, after one of the sisters goes missing, the sisters soon find their lives both uprooted as secrets begin to surface that’ll change their lives forever.

It’s hard to properly explain just how terrible Echoes is because there are elements that are great. Monaghan is one of them. She’s electric on screen and her scenes with Matt Bomer are fantastic. Unfortunately, though, neither Bomer nor Monaghan could carry this mess of a series. It’s as if the writers didn’t know where they wanted to take the story, so they continued to add drama for the sake of it. Both Leni and Gina are terrible characters, and while it might be a bit harsh, neither character is worthy of redemption. By the end, it’s unlikely viewers will like either Leni or Gina.

The entire concept of switching lives every year without those closest to them knowing is a touchy-subject, especially as these characters shared everything – including their partners who hadn’t a clue. Even worse, the women somehow managed to get away with numerous crimes because their choice to switch made it difficult for law enforcement to determine who was responsible for what. It’s incredibly frustrating. They ruined so many lives and were never truly held accountable for their actions. Yes, the finale suggests that might finally change in a second season, but it’s frustrating just how easily some of these folks forgive the sisters.

And then there’s the Dylan storyline – a plotline that quickly appears and then nearly forgotten soon after. Given what happens to Dylan and the sisters, this should’ve been something handled across multiple episodes and with more care. Especially when it comes to the lives lost. It is one of the many instances that felt as though it was written in just for dramatic effect, but with no proper plan on how to properly handle it.

The most frustrating part of Echoes, though, is that it does a pretty bad job at fleshing out its characters. While Monaghan gives both roles everything she has, the writing doesn’t do enough to really showcase a difference between Leni and Gina. That’s something that is pretty important given that the two are supposed to be very, very different. One is supposed to be more dominant, while the other is supposed to blindly follow along. Outside of some slight mannerism changes by Monaghan, it just doesn’t feel as though enough effort was made in developing their characterizations. It’s something that ruins the ending.

After everything these two have done – the fire, what happened to Claudia, switching lives – it’s frustrating that we never truly get to know Leni and Gina individually. Yes, the series is about them becoming one another and switching places every year, but there should still be some indicators of individuality. Something.

For a series that only consists of seven episodes, Echoes feels so much longer. It drags, constantly being pulled down by useless plotlines that make little sense.

Echoes is streaming now on Netflix.

  • ‘Black Sails’ Actor Joins Netflix’s ‘One Piece’

‘Black Sails’ Actor Joins Netflix’s ‘One Piece’

It looks like many One Piece actors are slowly updating their CVs with the latest show. While any official announcements have been quite seldom, it does seem that the site Pursch Artistes has updated quite a few of its actors’ resumes. Just recently we found out that Warrior actor Grant Ross is tackling the role of Genzo and now another one can be added to the list.

As first shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan on Twitter, it seems that Tamer Burjaq has updated his CV confirming he’s working on the One Piece series. Not only that, but he also revealed that he’s taking on the role of Higuma. The actor has quite the resume which includes DREDD 3D, Dark Tower, Black Sails, Tomb Raider, and many more.

In the case of who exactly Higuma is, the character isn’t a major player in the One Piece story but definitely a memorable one. He’s technically the first villain that Luffy faces in his youth, as he’s a mountain bandit that ends up in a fight with Shanks. Of course, we don’t know if the live-action adaptation may make some tweaks or changes to the original introduction of the character, but with the confirmation of a young Luffy in the cast, we’ll very likely get the iconic Romance Dawn flashback.

There is some confusing information included, which is the fact that it hints that director Emma Sullivan is involved with the episode that includes the actor. At this point, it seems like they may have defaulted with the director, as it was hinted that she’s involved with two episodes. At this point, she’d be directing an Arlong Park episode, Baratie, and even Syrup Village. For now, we’ll have to see once more information finds its way online.

  • ‘Shitt’s Creek’ Actor Joins ‘Sex Education’ Season 4

‘Shitt’s Creek’ Actor Joins ‘Sex Education’ Season 4

As the upcoming fourth season of Sex Education is seemingly losing a few veteran actors, it has seemingly added seven new faces to the dramedy. Among them is the big reveal that Shitt’s Creek‘s Dan Levy will have a role in the series. He’ll join Thaddea Graham, Marie Reuther, as well as newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Imani Yahshua, and Alexandra James.

The Hollywood Reporter has also shared a first look that features the returning Asa Butterfield and Mimi Keene in the upcoming fourth season. there’s also an image of Dan Levy as well as Emma Mackey.

Four cast members have left the project, which includes Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison, Simone Ashley, and Rahkee Thakrar. The story will continue where the third season left the cast-off, as Moordale Secondary was closed. The following description was shared for the new season that hints at what exactly is happening in the fourth season.

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier — their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.

Levy will take on the role of Thomas, a U.S. tutor at an Ivy League college. The roles for the rest of the new additions have not been shared yet.

  • ‘Warrior’ Actor Joins Live-Action ‘One Piece’

‘Warrior’ Actor Joins Live-Action ‘One Piece’

It looks like the various roles are getting filled for the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece. While we’re still waiting for the next official reveal by the team behind the franchise, it does seem like actor Grant Ross, known for his work on Warrior, American Monster and The Kissing Booth has joined the production as Genzo.

For those that might not know, Genzo is an important character in the Arlong Park Arc. While not a major role in the One Piece mythos, he plays a vital role in Nami’s upbringing and it’s great to see their casting be as close as possible to the original manga. He famously wore a windmill in his cap which would be fun to see in live-action. Ross was excited about the announcement and shared some great-looking fan art on how similar he looks to his manga counterpart.

The interesting reveal is that he seemingly has a role in an episode directed by Emma Sullivan. The surprise is that she was confirmed to direct the episodes he’s in. While there’s a chance that the Arlong Park Arc could be a multi-episode storyline, she was confirmed to be tackling the storyline of the Baratie. Many theorized that might’ve taken up multiple episodes as well.

So, it opens up the question if Baratie is only one episode or if the Doctor Who director is also responsible for every episode involving these two storylines. Genzo is only in that one storyline but there’s a chance he only included the director that was publicly known. Of course, we won’t know for sure until it is officially revealed.

  • Latest Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Castings Hint at Syrup Village Arc

Latest Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Castings Hint at Syrup Village Arc

It looks like some small news is trickling out for the live-action Netflix adaptation of One Piece. Matt Owens and Steve Maeda have been busy bringing one of manga’s most iconic stories to life. with the uncertainty surrounding past adaptations, it’s no wonder that some are cautiously optimistic but the set videos and castings have been quite promising. We knew that a shorter runtime would lead to fewer stories being included but it does seem like we’re definitely going to get a flashback for Usopp and the iconic battle of Syrup Village.

As first shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan first, actress Bianca Oosthuizen has seemingly revealed that she will be taking on the role of Sham, a member of the Kuroneko Pirates. The character might not be as memorable as the many others we meet along the Strawhat’s voyage, but it definitely confirms that we’ll see the Kuroneko pirates make their live-action debut in the series. That is not all, as Chanté Grainger has also seemingly been confirmed as Usopp’s mother, Banchina.

It should be noted that Oosthuizen also notes that she worked on an episode directed by Emma Sullivan. This reveal adds an interesting question, as we know that she was responsible for the Baratie episode as well. It does seemingly hint that these two arcs may take up an episode each. We don’t know if Baratie could also get split up into two episodes due to how much it covers but we’ll probably have to wait quite a bit longer before we find out.

As such, it’s safe to say that Syrup Village will be given some time during the show’s runtime. It does make you wonder how they might adapt some elements of Usopp’s origin and how he joins the crew, as it’s one of the lesser liked arcs in the storyline. Still, their addition does keep us tied until we get some more official news whenever we get our next major casting announcement for some big roles.

  • Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Finds its Rika

Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Finds its Rika

Things have been a bit quiet on the live-action One Piece front, as we have heard very little on the production as of late. There have been some potential teases, but official news has slowed down quite a bit since Netflix’s Geeked Week. To be fair, it was quite the showcase with an actual set video and even quite the cast reveal.

While things still remain a bit quiet until Tudum, we did get a little something to tide us over. Young actress Kamdynn Gary took to her Instagram and TikTok to reveal she has joined a production in South Africa. Now, it instantly made the connection to One Piece which she would then go on to confirm is going to play Shell Town’s Rika.

For those that may not know, Rika is actually an important character early on as she was the one to feed Zoro while he was forced to starve for killing Helmeppo’s dog. We learn that he did exactly that to save her from the rabid dog, and would even get a small cameo in a cover story during the post-time skip. We haven’t seen her since and it’s unclear if Eiichiro Oda might revisit her character at a later point, but she definitely was memorable during her short time in the East Blue Saga.

Russo Brothers Set Impressive Ensemble Cast for ‘The Electric State’

The Russo brothers are moving full steam ahead with their next film for Netflix. Deadline reports that a slew of top talent has boarded the duo’s film, The Electric State. Michelle Yeoh, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Brian Cox and Jenny Slate will star alongside Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown in the film.

Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the film from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The brothers will also produce the project with Mike Larocca through their AGBO banner. Chris Castaldi and Patrick Newall are also on board as producers for The Electric State, while Angela Russo-Otstot, Jake Aust, Geoff Haley, Markus and McFeely are executive producing. The movie is based on the illustrated novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag. While it is unclear who Yeoh, Tucci, and Alexander will play, Deadline states that Cox and Slate are expected to voice CGI characters in the film.

Ever since leaving behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe and Anthony Russo have quickly crafted a new home for their projects at Netflix. And the brothers have already confirmed both a sequel and a spinoff film to their latest effort, The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling.

  • Disney+ Beats Expectations and Adds 14.4M New Subscribers

Disney+ Beats Expectations and Adds 14.4M New Subscribers

It looks like the streaming market isn’t taking a nosedive after all. Netflix and HBO Max have been low expectations; especially the former continuing to lose subscriber count. The same fear existed with Disney+ but it seems that they managed to pull it to their advantage as they just reported that they’ve added 14.4M subscribers, which is ahead of their predicted 10M. As such, the stock is up 6% as a result and its revenue continues to be driven by its parks offerings.

Bob Chapek, the current CEO of Walt Disney, has shared the following statement on their third fiscal quarter:

We had an excellent quarter, with our world-class creative and business teams powering outstanding performance at our domestic theme parks, big increases in live-sports viewership, and significant subscriber growth at our streaming services. With 14.4 million Disney+ subscribers added in the fiscal third quarter, we now have 221 million total subscriptions across our streaming offerings. We continue to transform entertainment as we near our second century, with compelling new storytelling across our many platforms and unique immersive physical experiences that exceed guest expectations, all of which are reflected in our strong operating results this quarter.

    Bob Chapek

Unlike most, Disney has a diversified portfolio that can counterbalance any scares with the booming streaming business. Plus, the confirmation that an ad-supported model of Disney+ will hit the US in December also adds to the excitement on what exactly the future may hold for investors. Of course, the price hike to $10.99 for an ad-free version might rub som the wrong way.

Chapek promised investors in late 2021 that they’d reach 230M+ subscribers by September of 2025. It’ll be interesting to see if that continues to rise or if we should expect a slow-down anytime soon. They also expect Hulu and ESPN+ to become profitable by then as well.

  • ‘First Kill’ Showrunner Blames Netflix’s Poor Marketing for Cancellation

‘First Kill’ Showrunner Blames Netflix’s Poor Marketing for Cancellation

When the marketing for First Kill kicked off back in May, the marketing seemed to enjoy drawing comparisons to Buffy the Vampire Slayer while also trying to use the teenage lesbian aspect as a selling point. The marketing never truly went beyond either, giving First Kill shaky legs to begin with, only for the poor reviews to tear the Netflix series down further. So, it’s no surprise that the showrunner, Felicia D. Henderson, has spoken out against the show’s poor marketing, citing it as the reason it was ultimately canceled.

Two days after the news broke that First Kill would not be returning for Season 2, Henderson sat down to speak with the folks at the Daily Beast about the cancellation. “I so enthusiastically signed on to this show [because] it has something for everyone,” she explained. “Strong women leads, supernatural intrigue, an epic, Shakespearean battle between warring families, and a prominently featured Black family in the genre space, something Black viewers crave and a general audience needs to be treated to.”

However, as she notes, while the marketing for the series was stunning, it never really did a great job at selling what First Kill was about. “The art for the initial marketing was beautiful. I think I expected that to be the beginning and that the other equally compelling and important elements of the show — monsters vs. monster hunters, the battle between two powerful matriarchs, etc. — would eventually be promoted, and that didn’t happen.”

Here are some of the posters released for reference.

While Henderson’s comments are understandable, it’s also worth noting the romance aspect was the center focus of the story. Still, Netflix did fail to showcase the powerful families in the series, as well as the various monsters lurking nearby.

While First Kill did make Netflix’s Top 10 for within its first week, the show had trouble with audiences completing the series. Deadline reports that First Kill ranked at Nov. 7 with 30.3 million hours watched, peaking at No. 3 in its first full week of release with 48.8 million, going on to clear 100 million hours viewed within its first 4 weeks. Despite all of that, the series lacked the competition hours necessary for Netflix to renew it.

Still, in the end, Henderson is grateful for Netflix did do. “They licensed the IP, paid for a pilot script, and gave it a healthy production budget.”

First Kill is streaming now on Netflix.
