We’ve been long waiting for an update on Star Wars upcoming Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi and it has finally arrived. Luckily, Disney+ Day is the perfect time to tease its upcoming release. It looks like he’ll have quite the hardships ahead of him, as Deadline shared a brief preview from a sizzle reel, where showrunner Deborah Chow teased Jedi hunters are on the lookout.
This is a quite a dark time we’re coming into with him, just being a Jedi; it’s not safe. There are Jedi hunters out there
A May release does open up a few questions surrounding Disney+’s potential schedule for 2022. Also, a May 4th release to celebrate Star Wars Day seems like the perfect timing to release one of the most anticipated series for the streaming service. There are rumors that Marvel Studios‘ Ms. Marvel series is eyeing an early 2022 release, which gives The Book of Boba Fett its time to shine once it premieres in December.
Of course, these are two distinct franchises that the service is okay with letting release simultaneously. There’s still the possibility that we get some kind of trailer to tease upcoming projects, but Disney’s Investors Day could also take place in December to take over that role. Right now, we’re still waiting for a trailer to give us a glimpse into the upcoming The Mandalorian spinoff.
It’s possible we have our first information on Sung Kang’s mysterious Obi-Wan Kenobi role. A new report from Jordan Maison and the folks at Cinelinx are claiming that Kang will portray one of the Empire’s Inquisitors in the Disney+ series. More specifically, he is said to be the Fifth Brother, an antagonist we saw frequently in the second season of Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars Rebels.
In that show, the Fifth Brother was voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodriguez, and worked closely with Sarah Michelle Geller’s Seventh Sister to track down the Force-sensitive Ezra Bridger and his master Kanan Jarrus. The Fifth Brother ultimately met his end at the hands of the former Sith Lord, Maul.
In the Star Wars universe, the Inquisitors are a group of Dark Side Force users who work for Darth Vader and the Empire. They spend much of the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope hunting down Force-sensitive individuals in an effort to kill or turn them. Maison claims that they won’t be the only Rebels characters who appear in Kenobi, but the scooper did not clarify who else might make an appearance.
Sung Kang is best known for his role as the fan favorite character Han Lue in the Fast and the Furious franchise. In recent years, he has also appeared in films like Raya and the Last Dragon and We Can Be Heroes. On television, he had a starring role in three seasons of the popular Starz series Power.
She may only be a child, but to us, she’s royalty. Rumor has it Princess Leia Organa will be making a return to live-action in next year’s Kenobi series. The news comes from Jordan Maison at Cinelinx, who claims actress Vivian Lyra Blair has been cast as a younger version of the iconic character for the upcoming Disney+ project.
The same report reveals that Leia will be a major part of Kenobi’s story, with Maison describing her role as the “impetus” of the whole show. If the rumor is true, it seems the young Princess will be the reason Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi dives into a new adventure.
Blair is perhaps best known for her work in 2018’s surprise hit Bird Box, and also had a role in Robert Rodriguez’s Sharkboy & Lavagirl spin-off We Can Be Heroes. Princess Leia is one of the founding characters of the Star Wars franchise. She was originally brought to life by Carrie Fisher, who famously portrayed the character in six films over the course of forty years. The rebellious dignitary also had a cameo appearance in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with Norwegian actress IngvildDeila standing in as a body double for Fisher.
Other than this cameo, not much of the character’s life before A New Hope has been explored. Leia appeared briefly in Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Rebels, working against the Empire on her adoptive father’s orders. She may be a little too young to be participating in missions in Kenobi, so it will be interesting to see what shenanigans could end up getting Obi-Wan out of exile on Tatooine.
We’ve all been wondering when the third season of The Mandalorian would finally enter production. It was revealed earlier in the year that the spin-off The Book of Boba Fett would be the first to enter production and premiere in its usual time slot this year. Star Wars‘ expansion into streaming has already seen them pick up the pace with the Rogue One spin-off Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi entering production throughout the year. Well, it looks like the expansion has also come at a price.
Collider revealed that the third season won’t enter production until the end of 2021 or the latest in early 2022. So, we certainly can’t expect the continuation before the end of the next year. There are multiple reasons for this, as the LA stages the film usually utilizes are pre-occupied by Ewan McGregor‘s return as Obi-Wan Kenobi. There is also the fact that Pedro Pascal recently joined HBO’s live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us franchise.
It’s going to be a long wait for Mandalorian fans until the next entry finally releases, but it doesn’t mean we aren’t getting more Star Wars on Disney+. Collider also hinted at the fact that we can expect some familiar faces in the spin-off, as it is described as a mid-season event. So far, the only confirmed addition besides Temuera Morrison‘s Boba Fett is Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. The series recently ended its production. So, we might get some more news in the coming months about what we can expect from the series.
It looks like the Obi-Wan Kenobi series has added one more actress to the ever-growing cast. PEN 15‘s Maya Erskine has seemingly joined the cast and has a supporting role for three episodes. It isn’t specified who she might be playing, as the series’ plot remains under wraps. So far, we only know it takes place 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and nine before A New Hope. It will also see the “rematch of the century” between Obi-Wan and Vader, as Hayden Christen will reprise the role of Anakin Skywalker.
The actress has also recently appeared in Insecure and the Scoob! film. She has been nominated for multiple WGA Awards and even got an Emmy nomination for her work on Hulu’s PEN 15. Erskine is currently in the Hulu series Casual and will star in the film Sacramento alongside Michael Cera. The upcoming Disney+ series is in pre-production and slated to start production soon. The six-hour-long series will be directed by The Mandalorian director, Deborah Chow.
Disney+ is expanding its Star Wars offerings, as Obi-Wan Kenobi will be joined by various spin-offs of the streaming service premiere show and the Rogue One spin-off, Andor. 2021 will be dominated by Marvel Studios’ series but May will see the release of The Clone Wars spin-off, The Bad Batch that will continue where the previous series left off. The end will be finished off with the first spin-off of The Mandalorian that will focus on Boba Fett before its third season sees the return of Din Djarin.
With the Obi-Wan KenobiDisney+ series getting ready to shoot, as the set video leak from the last couple of days made clear, Ewan McGregor is also starting to look the part. With shooting confirmed to be taking place in Los Angeles, McGregor was spotted hanging out in California with the Kenobi beard he famously sported in both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. It’ll be interesting to see if he’ll keep the longer hair as well or he’ll cut it before the production starts.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to take place in between episodes III and IV, at a time when Kenobi called Tatooine his home. If the show will be entirely set on that planet is still undisclosed, but the rumors that we will get a few flashbacks to the Clone Wars will most likely become a reality. We might explore his time before we were introduced to the iconic Jedi in The Phantom Menace.
The show is set to reunite McGregor with Hayden Christensen returns to the world of Star Wars to play Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader was confirmed at the 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation. As the production start date approached, Indira Varma and another 9 names were confirmed as being part o the cast, with Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse reprising their roles from the Star Wars Prequels as Luke’s uncles. It’ll be interesting to explore this time that would lead to the moment that Luke started to explore beyond the desert planet he called home.
It looks like Ob-Wan Kenobi has started preparing for its upcoming shoot. Ewan McGregor confirmed that they were eyeing a production start in late Spring. As a guest on Eddie Izzard‘s A Run For Hope marathon, he confirmed that they will film in Los Angeles after Boston and the United Kingdom were rumored. Well, it looks like some videos have found their way of what looks like a recreation of Tatooine from the Kenobi‘s set. The TikTok video got shared by Twitter user @ewanskenobii. It seems that someone from the set filmed the video while adding the iconic Cantino music on it.
It looks like the set isn’t quite done yet, as they are still preparing for the production start. The Mandalorian has used generic locations to film different scenes. It is uncertain how long the story will focus on Tatooine, as awe could see the iconic Jedi travel throughout the galaxy for one last quest. It makes sense that the iconic planet from A New Hope would make an appearance. It’ll be interesting to see a young Skywalker growing up on a farm.
They could also reveal how Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to age drastically in 19 years or how he became known as Ben Kenobi by the locals. There are a lot of plot threads that could be explored in the story. We know that Hayden Christensen is returning. It is uncertain how he might tie into the story either appearing as a young Darth Vader, or he might even haunt Kenobi as his biggest falure. It’ll be interesting to see how they continue his story.
Disney+ has been slowly expanding. 2021 is going to be a major year for the streaming service, which will see a long-list of Marvel Studios’ shows premiere throughout the year. Of course, Star Wars also has quite a few shows planned with May’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch and The Book of Boba Fett at the end of the year. Of course, we learned of a slew of new productions starting this year that will continue to expand on the galaxy. On the official Twitter page, Star Wars unveiled the cast for their sequel to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which will explore Obi-Wan Kenobi’s time after the Jedi Council has fallen. The casting list includes the already confirmed actors and some new and familiar faces.
There are some stand-out castings here. Joel Edgerton returns as a young Owen Lars. He played the character in Star Wars. Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Bonnie Piesse is also returning as Beru, his girlfriend, and future wife. Eternals star Kumail Nanijani has also joined the cast in an unspecified role. They’ve also nabbed Sung Kang of The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift fame. It is quite a cast and it’ll be interesting to see how the show tells this bridge story before he makes his return in A New Hope. They could even answer the question of how Ewan McGregor ages into Alec Guinness in a few years.
Disney+ is only starting its expansion into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a galaxy far, far away. While the MCU is dominating the streaming service right now, there is quite a bit more of Star Wars just around the corner. In May, we will get the Star Wars: The Clone Wars spin-off, The Bat Batch. The Book of Boba Fett is also in production before they jump on the third season of the series that started Disney+, The Mandalorian. Of course, many other series are in some form of development. We are anxiously awaiting the return of Ewan McGregor in an upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It will tell the story of what happened after the events of Revenge of the Sith. There hasn’t been a lot of updates on the series, but that is changing now.
Discussing Film has exclusively learned that production designer Todd Cherniawsky has joined the series. He has worked with Lucasfilm before. He was the supervising art director for The Last Jedi. He even got nominated at the Art Director’s Guild for his work. He has also worked in another galaxy, as he is also involved with various Star Trek: Discovery and Picard.
He is joining cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, who just finished up Sony’s live-action adaptation of Uncharted. Some might recognize his work on the Korean films Oldboy and The Handmaiden. Their filmography is a promising showcase of what we can expect from the series. Cherniawsky‘s work on Star Trek could also tease some beautiful alien planets that Obi-Wan will explore in his upcoming quest. It’ll be interesting to see what stories await the Jedi.
