SUMMER GAME FEST: Eddie Brock Will Not Become Venom in ‘Spider-Man 2’

Summer Game Fest has finally arrived and with E3 no longer happening, it’s likely our biggest event for gaming news. While we didn’t get a new trailer for Spider-Man 2, we did get some great reveals and confirmations. The biggest is that the one major character confirmed for quite some time to appear in the game was finally focused on again. Besides some beautiful artwork, we now also find out that the character won’t be who we thought it is.

The first look of Venom seemingly hinted at the design we’re used to that Eddie Brock ends up with when the symbiote takes him over after Peter Parker. Yet, the game’s director Bryan Intihar has confirmed that this is, in fact, not Eddie Brock but someone else. Naturally, they did not reveal who exactly that’ll be, and this has kept us wondering.

There are many possible candidates. Most might think it’s Harry Osborne given we saw him fused with what looked like the symbiote in the first game. It’s a good chance that it’ll be him but they might also play around with the idea of it being Kraven the Hunter that ends up getting overtaken, which would match with him being one of the main big bads of the game.

They could also have Dr. Curt Connors whose Lizard DNA might create the monstrous version of the character. Until the October 20th release, we might not know but it’s fun to guess. We’ll have to see if future trailers might offer more teases of who it’ll be and what it means for the character in this story.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Nabs Biggest Opening Day of 2023

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Nabs Biggest Opening Day of 2023

You read that correctly, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has opened to $51.7M on opening day, which makes it the biggest of 2023. Yes, it outgrossed Super Mario Bros.’ $31.7M Wednesday and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s $48.1M. It’s not yet clear if this is a bit of a frontloading due to the animated film’s growing popularity since the release of Into the Spider-Verse, but it makes the third-best opening day for any Spider-Man movie. Only Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 at $59.8M and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $121.9M are ahead of it.

That’s not all, as it is also the third highest animated opening ever only beaten by the Pixar film Incredibles 2 at $71.2M and Finding Dory’s $54.7M. Either way, it is Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest opening day ever and about to become its biggest opening weekend. If the film does end up being a frontloaded film it might land at $113.5M but has a chance that strong word-of-mouth might push it towards $125M.

As of now, 93% are positive with 82% recommending the film according to PostTrak, which is already a good sign. It also nabbed an A CinemaScore, which isn’t quite No Way Home’s A+ but still the score that gives superhero films strong legs moving forward. Even if the film ends up frontloaded, it’s still quite an accomplishment in just how big of a jump it is from the first film which highlights that films that don’t make the biggest mark on the box office have the potential to grow exponentially.

The only other major release here is The Boogyman, which pulled around $11.5M, which is slightly behind its initial tracking. The counterprogram was a smart placement even with a PG-13 rating, but it seems all eyes are on Across the Spider-Verse for the weekend. The curious case will be how the films perform internationally, as The Little Mermaid wasn’t quite the performer some may hope outside of the States.

  • Amy Pascal Confirms Development on Live-Action Miles Morales Feature Film

Amy Pascal Confirms Development on Live-Action Miles Morales Feature Film

As audiences prepare for the return on Miles Morales in his second animated feature film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, word comes that Sony plans to bring the character back to the screen in a live-action project. At the red carpet premiere of Across the Spider-Verse, producer Amy Pascal confirmed with Variety that the project is one of many in development at Sony.

You’ll see all of it. It’s all happening,” said Pascal when asked if the protagonist of the SpiderVerse trilogy would make his way into live-action. Created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Morales quickly became one of Marvel Comics most popular heroes. After originally becoming the Spider-Man of the Ultimate universe after the death of Peter Parker, Morales jumped into the mainstream/Earth-616 continuity in 2015’s Secret Wars and has remained a prominent part of the company’s line of comics since.

It’s unclear just how far into development the live-action Miles Morales project might be at this time and if it’s a project that Sony is tackling solo or in collaboration with Marvel Studios. Spider-Man: Homecoming featured Morales’ uncle, Aaron Davis, played by Donald Glover, and what has been interpreted to be a reference to Miles. While that reference could ultimately just be an Easter egg, it’s probably in both studios’ best interests to work together to define Miles Morales’ live-action future as allowing him to interact with the already-established MCU characters would benefit his development the same way it has with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. As exciting as the news of a live-action Miles Morales film is, however, it’s best to temper expectations until the project is much further down the development pipeline.

  • New ‘Spider-Man 2’ Trailer Reveals First Look at Kraven the Hunter & Symbiote Spider-Man

New ‘Spider-Man 2’ Trailer Reveals First Look at Kraven the Hunter & Symbiote Spider-Man

The Sony Showcase ended on a high note with our first look at Spider-Man 2’s major villain: Kraven the Hunter. Interestingly enough, it also looks like the game unveiled Spider-Man rocking the symbiote suit. We only knew that Venom was going to feature, but it was uncertain if you actually get to use his powers and they will use it to have Peter Parker’s Spider-Man be different from Miles Morales.

Also, they updated Miles’ suit to have a gliding function. So, we are seeing quite a few steps forward for the franchise. It’s uncertain if you can only switch between these two characters, as Mary Jane was also playable. The trailer also hinted at Lizard multiple times before unveiling him on the run from the duo. It seems the story will be built around the character and his struggle.

It’s looking like an exciting new entry, and we’re already seeing the rage in Peter Parker. While the “Six Months Later” element may have misled us to believe this is how the game kicks off, the Kraven segment is very likely how the game opens. It’ll be interesting to see how switching between Spider-Mans will affect your overworld experience and if they have unique missions for each character.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Is Finally Coming to Disney Plus

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Is Finally Coming to Disney Plus

Peter Parker’s first solo MCU adventure is finally heading to Disney Plus. As part of a series of announcements by Marvel, it was revealed that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be available on the streaming service beginning May 12th.

Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3), starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, will be available to stream on the service beginning April 21st as well Mark Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield as the Web-Head. Homecoming and Sony Pictures Venom will join the other films on the service on May 12th.

Of course, all three Spider-Men appeared side-by-side-by-side in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and that film’s post-credit scene featured Tom Hardy‘s Eddie Brock and his symbiote hanging out in the MCU. As fans wait to see what’s next for Tom Holland‘s Spidey in the MCU, now hey can at least rewatch his first MCU adventure and some of the multiversal Spidey shenanigans on Disney Plus.

  • Thomas Haden Church Hints at Sandman’s Return to the MCU

Thomas Haden Church Hints at Sandman’s Return to the MCU

Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the world to the multiverse with the return of some iconic characters from Spider-Man’s cinematic past. Among them was Thomas Haden Church who made his long-awaited return as Sandman. While he only had a brief actual appearance in the film with the help of some old footage, we did get him fully CG in sand form.

Interestingly enough, the actor has hinted that perhaps there’s more in the cards for Sandman, as he revealed there were talks with producer Amy Pascal and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige in an interview with DisInsider. With films like Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, there are many opportunities to have familiar faces return.

There was just so much going on. John and I and Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige], we all had a lot of conversations. And I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into an a future iteration of it. The conversation has happened about him coming back, and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story. You know? With Flint and being not just Sandman, but returning to human form.

    Thomas Haden Church

The “fulfilling story” he is referencing is the fact that Spider-Man: No Way home included one about his daughter that seemingly got cut at some point. It’s no surprise given just how massive of an undertaking the film was with all these villains and plot lines from across the multiverse it had to juggle. We’ll have to see if we can expect his return sooner or later.

  • REPORT: ‘Deadpool’s Karan Soni Voicing Spider-Man India in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

REPORT: ‘Deadpool’s Karan Soni Voicing Spider-Man India in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

It’s crazy to think how close we are finally to see the next animated entry in the Spider-Verse Saga. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees Miles Morales returning once again to take on an unlikely challenge, though this time he’s about to be thrust across the multiverse rather than it coming to visit him.

We know of quite a few Spider-People that’ll accompany or even fight our unlikely hero with one of the first being the addition of Spider-Man India. Pavitr Prabhakar was one of the first teased when the first ever teaser for the sequel was released back in 2021. Though he wasn’t included directly in the trailer, the signs all hinted at his origin and that it was part of his universe.

Now, we may even know who’ll be voicing the character, as One Take News has shared that Deadpool‘s Karan Soni will take on the voice of Spider-Man India. This marks another Marvel role for the character, as he famously played the loveable Dopinder, who ends up in quite a few troubles since he befriended Deadpool.

He’s definitely a great choice for the role, as he has a soft demeanor that would match the character’s iconic comic portrayal. Though, we don’t know if he will be an ally for Miles Morales, who might help him navigate the relentless pursuit of Spider-Man 2099. We saw them fight in his universe, and he may have a bigger role than we know.

  • New ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Funkos Offer New Look at Scarlet Spider, Vulture and More

New ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Funkos Offer New Look at Scarlet Spider, Vulture and More

While Marvel Studios continues to set the pace at the box office, they aren’t the only Marvel entry set to make a big splash this year. We also have the long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that will continue the story of Miles Morales. This time around he is forced to travel Across the Spider-Verse and no longer have unwelcomed Spider-People on his home turf. As such, we’ll see a variety of new characters during his travel across the multiverse and the latest Funkos offer a glimpse at who he’ll meet along the way.

We get a few familiar characters that have already been confirmed for some time and even showcased in the recent trailer release for Across the Spider-Verse. Spider-Punk’s Funko even seems to keep the unique art style that will bring him to life in the animated film. We also see Spider-Woman’s design and Spider-Man 2099, who has been hinted as an antagonist in the upcoming film.

That’s not all, as we also get a good look at Spider-Man India, whose world was hinted at in the first-ever teaser for the film. They are joined by some new characters like Spider-Byte, which seems to be a new take on a digitized version of the iconic hero. There’s also Scarlet Spider, whose design seems to hint at a strong cel-shaded look for when they show up.

That is not all, as we also got our first villain tease in the Funkos with a character that seems to be a medieval version of Vulture. So far, we only know that Spot is going to be the primary villain nd one of the reasons Miles finds himself stranded throughout the multiverse, but we don’t know yet how many iconic villains that might find their way into this story.

Overall, these Funkos look great and are certainly must-buys for any collector. They are a great tease on what we can expect and with a film that features the most Spider-Man characters, we may see a lot more Funkos in the near future building up to the film’s release.

  • Marvel Studios Already Found their Story for ‘Spider-Man 4’

Marvel Studios Already Found their Story for ‘Spider-Man 4’

Many have been wondering where the announcement is for the fourth entry in the MCU’s take on Spider-Man. We had the bombastic multiverse storyline in Spider-Man: No Way Home that ended in a big way; taking Peter Parker back to his roots. We haven’t seen Tom Holland‘s take since the 2019’s release but it looks like the project is moving forward steadily.

In an extensive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige was asked the question dropped if he might have an update for the next Spider-Man film and it seems they already have their story done. The only thing missing is “putting pen to paper” by the writers behind the project; who haven’t been announced either.

All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.

    Kevin Feige

It’s definitely encouraging to know that they are still actively working on the fourth Spider-Man film. It’ll be challenging to see how they follow up something like No Way home, but taking a step back seems like the best direction they could take.

We got the hint of Parker being left to his own devices without any of the Avengers truly remembering who he is. So, it not only gives Marvel the chance to establish a new trilogy while also taking the lessons learned from past entries. They avoided the clichés of the franchise up until now, so they might have a chance to return to the classics.

  • ‘Spider-Man Noir’ Series in Development for Amazon Prime Video

‘Spider-Man Noir’ Series in Development for Amazon Prime Video

A new wrinkle into the Spider-Verse is taking place at Amazon Prime. It has been revealed that a live-action series for Spider-Man Noir is moving forward at the streaming service with Oren Uziel is set to serve as a writer and executive producer for the new project. In addition, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal have worked on developing the project and will also be working as executive producers.

The new Spider-Man Noir series is part of the partnership between Sony Pictures and Amazon Prime Video to create shows based on Spider-Man characters currently owned by the former. It will be the second of its kind with Silk: Spider Society well into development under showrunner Angela Kang.

The series will be based in 1930s New York City and follow a grizzled version of Spider-Man. Not much is currently known in terms of narrative details for Spider-Man Noir, though according to sources with Variety, the main character of this series will not be a Peter Parker variant. This assumedly eliminates any connection from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as Nicolas Cage played the Peter Parker version of the Noir-themed Spider-Man.

Spider-Man Noir will be notable as the first project in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to have a live-action version of the titular character, even if it’s based in a separate universe. This comes after being built around an array of Spider-Man’s villains thus far.

No word has been given on when audiences should expect Spider-Man: Noir to release on Amazon Prime Video.
