    ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Is Finally Coming to Disney Plus

    Peter Parker’s first solo MCU adventure is finally heading to Disney Plus. As part of a series of announcements by Marvel, it was revealed that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be available on the streaming service beginning May 12th.

    Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3), starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, will be available to stream on the service beginning April 21st as well Mark Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield as the Web-Head. Homecoming and Sony Pictures Venom will join the other films on the service on May 12th.

    Of course, all three Spider-Men appeared side-by-side-by-side in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and that film’s post-credit scene featured Tom Hardy‘s Eddie Brock and his symbiote hanging out in the MCU. As fans wait to see what’s next for Tom Holland‘s Spidey in the MCU, now hey can at least rewatch his first MCU adventure and some of the multiversal Spidey shenanigans on Disney Plus.

    BREAKING: First ‘Spider-Man’ Films Heading to Disney+ UK

    The Marvel collection on Disney+ has been a highlight for many subscribers of the streaming service. An easy way to watch all entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even explore some legacy titles from the 20th Century Fox era. Sadly, there were still some missing, most notably Sony’s iconic Spider-Man franchises. When rumblings hit the web about a deal with Sony to acquire their library, many wondered when it might finally come to fruition. It looks like the first steps have finally been reached.

    The deal initially saw that Netflix will acquire the Sony projects before they would move on to Disney+, which has a multi-year deal for post-day-1-releases. While there’s no confirmation yet for when they hit the United States, the official Disney+ UK account has announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming will join the service on June 17th.

    That is not all, as they have also confirmed that the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 will be added alongside The Amazing Spider-Man films. The noticeable absence of Spider-Man 3 hints that it’s still part of the Netflix deal and will likely follow at a later date.

    The same will also go for Spider-Man: Far From Home and eventually No Way Home. The latter might take a year or so once it releases on Netflix before it’ll become available on Disney+. Sony has been playing a strategic game in the market as instead of carrying the weight of an entire streaming service, they simply are using licensing deals to make a profit off of these current developments rather than risk losing any investment directly.

    With this release, we may see other Sony films get added to the service in the near future, and we’ll anxiously await the US release window as well. The fact we’re finally seeing the fruits of a deal that was made back in April of 2021 is an exciting prospect for the future of Disney+ and the streaming market.

    Andrew Garfield Has “No Plans” for More Spider-Man

    The road to Andrew Garfield’s return as Spider-Man: No Way Home was filled with denials and dissembling as the actor tried to keep a lid on things even as more and more evidence emerged that he would suit up again. While all is certainly forgiven by fans following the film, Garfield’s performance has led to a non insignificant push on social media to see a more extended return to the character.

    Garfield has recently made it clear that he’s open to returning as the older, angrier Spider-Man down the road and his performance in No Way Home was powerful enough to leave fans asking a lot of questions that could be explored under the right circumstances, as Garfield explained previously:

    I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right. Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.

    Being open to returning and actually returning are, of course, very different things and not entirely dependent on Garfield’s wishes. To that end, fans may be a bit bummed to find out that, at the moment, it doesn’t seem like another appearance by Garfield as Spidey is imminent. At last night’s SAG Awards, Garfield was asked by a Variety reporter if he would be doing Spider-Man again and a very self-aware Garfield delivered the news that he has “no plans” to return to the role.

    As fans, it’s become entirely impossible to believe anything any actor associated with a Marvel project has to say. Garfield could be telling the truth and not actually know what’s next. Garfield could have already filmed something for a future appearance. Garfield could be lying, which he knows is the default belief of fandom now. Whatever the case, there’s certainly room for more stories to be told about Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man that would definitely deviate from the path Tom Holland’s MCU Spidey has set, so fingers crossed it’s another lie and we’ll see him swinging back into action in the not-too-distant future.

    Andrew Garfield Improvised A Key ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Line

    Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home was released a few weeks ago, more behind-the-scenes stories from the production are beginning to emerge. While it was an open secret that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would appear alongside Tom Holland, there was lots of uncertainty about how they would each play their version of Peter Parker.  In relation to Marvel and Sony’s initial pitch to him Garfield spoke to Variety about how he approached his Peter in relation to the others: 

    We talked a lot about mentorship. We talked a lot about brotherhood and about what it is to be the older brother, younger brother and the middle brother. There’s also a thing of seeing someone you love walking down a path that you’ve already walked down, and you know it doesn’t lead [to] the place where you ultimately meant to go.

    Having each played the character of Peter Parker, Garfield said that the three actors had “deeper conversations” about their experiences with the character. It might have been these that prompted an unscripted moment in the film:

    There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them. That was just me loving them.

    It’s great to hear that one of the most heartwarming moments in the film was improvised and speaks to a warmth between the actors as well as the characters. It was also probably a feeling that many people in the audience had while watching alongside the characters. It’s exciting for fans to know that the actor’s comradery translated from their characters to the actors themselves.

    UPDATE: It looks like another comment has been discovered by William Spencer on the discussions surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 3. As shared previously, the Andrew Garfield stunt double seemingly hinted at something being in the works, but The Direct uncovered another comment that was tucked away, where he confirms he has no info on the rumored The Amazing Spider-Man 3 revival.

    Ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters, there’s been a lot to digest on the future of Spider-Man. Many were happy to see Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire‘s return to the iconic roles, but it also brought back a new love for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. So much that it even became a trending topic and people wanted to see the revival of the third entry. Garfield is even a popular choice to face off against Venom, as many believe his Peter Parker exists in that specific universe while Tom Holland continues in the MCU. Well, a slip up by Garfield‘s stunt double may have confirmed that Sony is reviving The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

    In a new post, William Spencer shared that he is currently recovering from an Achilles injury. Many comments hinted at their interest in him returning to stunt double in the third entry with one user even congratulating on a project that isn’t officially announced. Well, it’s his reaction to the statement that has caught everyone’s attention, as he seemingly thanks him for the congratulations and may have confirmed that a project may be in some form of development or at least talks.

    The reason we run it as a rumor is due to a Forbes article adding some confusion to the mix. Sony originally wanted Garfield to face off against the Sinister Six, who were going to get their own film. And amidst the Venom rumors, an article titled “Andrew Garfield Likely Returning As Spider-Man to Fight Venom, Sinister Six” started adding more fuel to the fire that the project is happening. Yet, it seems that most of the piece is pure speculation on Sony wanting to capitalize on the success of No Way Home. So, this could be the basis of him believing a third entry is in development. So far, we only heard that the fourth entry of Hollands‘ run is in development, but there are still many rumors hinting at Garfield not being done with Spidey. So, we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but hope that Sony unveils its future plans in the near future.

    The Original Plot of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’ May Have Adapted the Clone Saga

    The (sort of) surprising return of Andrew Garfield in this month’s Spider-Man: No Way Home already has fans buzzing about the potential of his character’s future. While any plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 were scrapped when Sony announced Marvel Studios would once again reboot the web-slinger in 2015, the multiversal trajectory of the MCU’s next phase has opened the door for any project to become possible. As such, enthusiastic members of the Spider-Man fandom have already started petitioning for Sony to put a third Garfield-led film into production.

    If this were to ever become a reality, it’s likely the movie’s plot would have to be dramatically different from what was originally mapped out. Garfield is now an older version of Peter Parker, and his dialogue in No Way Home hints that events in his universe played out unlike anything we’d seen set up in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Last we saw “Peter-Three”, he was engaged in battle with Paul Giamatti‘s Rhino, triumphantly returning to heroics after the death of his love Gwen Stacy. While we may never know for certain what exactly was to come next, it is possible to get an idea of Sony and director Marc Webb‘s general plot ideas from a collection of interview sound bites over the past decade.

    The first hint at genuine story details for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 came from actor and comedian Denis Leary, who portrayed Captain George Stacy in both previous movies. In an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, Leary was asked his thoughts on the cancellation of his Spider-Man franchise. His response was far more intriguing than could have been anticipated:

    I was disappointed because I’m totally selfish and greedy. I came back briefly in two and possibly in [The Amazing Spider-Man] 3, there was this idea at one point that Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that had died. So, there was this discussion that Captain Stacy would come back even bigger in episode 3. So, I was like, let’s go!

    This sounds absolutely bonkers, but it doesn’t come without comic book precedence. Shortly after Marvel published The Night Gwen Stacy Died, they introduced a new villain to the Spider-Man mythos. Professor Miles Warren, a.k.a. the mad scientist Jackal, would go on to be involved in multiple controversial story arcs that involved him using Peter and Gwen’s DNA to create a variety of spider-clones and revive characters thought long-dead, mainly Gwen herself. This climaxed in the well-known 1990’s “Clone Saga” plot, where it was revealed that the many new versions of Peter and his deceased loved ones were actually all part of a ploy concocted by yet another thought-dead character from his past. I’m referring, of course, to the infamous former Green Goblin, Norman Osborn.

    Chris Cooper had a brief role in the last Garfield film as a dying Osborn, passing away after leaving his “Osborn curse” and the Goblin mantle to Dane DeHaan‘s Harry. According to a 2017 Marc Webb interview with Den of Geek, this was never supposed to be the last time we saw Cooper. The filmmaker revealed the actor was initially slated to return as the surprise main villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 3:

    Yeah, we were talking about the Sinister Six. They were going to make a Sinister Six movie before we did the third one. But I wanted…Chris Cooper was going to come back and play the Goblin. We were going to freeze his head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it…that was going to be the main villain. He was going to come out and lead the Sinister Six.

    For those counting at home, that’s two major plot points taken directly from the Clone Saga. Of course, the inclusion of the Sinister Six, which was also teased at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, does take the film in a slightly altered direction. However, Webb makes a point to note that the super-villain team would first appear in their own movie, which was to be directed by Drew Goddard and was rumored to feature Garfield’s Spider-Man in a supporting role. There is no clarification on how involved the Six and the Wall-Crawler would be in each other’s solo outings, but it’s possible the villainous team would have been a more physical threat to pair with the psychological conundrum of Stacy clones running around everywhere.

    If this seems like a lot of plots for one movie, it’s because it is. Yet, the Amazing franchise was sort of known for putting too much into one movie. For example, the one that tanked everything had a Goblin arc, an Electro plot, a love story, a Sinister Six set-up, and a C-plot involving Peter discovering his parents’ role in an international weapons scheme and the special nature of his own genetics. So, yeah, it seems likely they really may have gone for both the Clone Saga and the Sinister Six…in one film. After all, the idea of cloning lines up with the aforementioned Parker genetics’ throughline Sony was weaving in their superhero movies.

    The now-famous Sony email hack of 2014 also hinted at elements from the Ultimate Comics version of the Clone Saga being used in the future of the Amazing series. In a now-deleted article from CBM, some of the leaked emails were detailed and revealed that Sony executives had actually discussed bringing back Emma Stone‘s Gwen Stacy in the same fashion as her Ultimate counterpart:

    Hannah Minghella brings up a suggestion made in jest by Emma Stone that she returns as Carnage (like in the Ultimate comics) as a ‘thought to consider for the future’ because it ‘could be really cool/sexy/intense to see.

    This revelation lines up shockingly well with a deleted scene from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which featured the unexpected return of Peter’s father Richard. A resurrection of a similar kind, with the elder Parker claiming to have actually secretly survived his supposed death, comes straight from the pages of the Ultimate Clone Saga story. The potential return of Gwen also could have fixed a brewing problem for Sony, where the cast-but-never-seen Shailene Woodley said she was unsure about coming back to play Mary Jane in the threequel:

    I don’t know anything but seeing as how they picked up the next two ‘Divergent’ films, I don’t know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year. But anything can happen.

    As previously stated, it’s possible fans may never know what was actually supposed to happen in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. A lot of what is presented here is conjecture, based on short looks into a long, turbulent filmmaking process. Leary‘s claims of revival could have been from a version of the story written before Webb decided on Osborn and the Sinister Six. The information about Stone’s role reprisal and Woodley’s maybe-departure could be completely unrelated. Realistically, however, it does seem very likely that parts of the next Amazing were set to be inspired by the Clone Saga, with Garfield’s Peter Parker conceivably going up against a team of supervillains while contending with “clones” of those he lost. It’s a lot, but that’s what the The Amazing Spider-Man franchise’s legacy will always be.

    REVIEW: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Is the Perfect Superhero Film for the ‘Twilight’ Generation

    The Amazing Spider-Man was always facing an uphill battle. Marc Webb‘s reboot of cinema’s most iconic superhero franchise came on the heels of an upsetting Spider-Man 4 cancellation and was attempting to establish everyone’s favorite wall-crawler for a whole new breed of teenager. It was never going to please everyone, and it certainly lived up to that expectation. The film debuted in 2012 to a stream of mixed reception, with some praising the Andrew Garfield-led film for its modern take on the title character and others ripping it apart as a hollow recreation of Sam Raimi‘s original masterpiece. Upon yet another rewatch, I’ve discovered that the movie, while flawed, may be more misunderstood than actually all that bad. In fact, it may have been the perfect superhero movie for the generation taking over cinemas when it released, even if hardcore fans missed it at the time.

    I couldn’t be more aware of the fact every Spider-Man movie has been reviewed to death. Perhaps it would be better to think of this as a retrospective, just a year shy of The Amazing Spider-Man‘s decennial anniversary. Doing this requires an understanding of 2012’s film landscape. Comic book movies had only just truly reached mainstream popularity, and the highest grossing films at the box office were mostly adaptations of young adult novels. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 had just dominated the cultural hive mind only a year prior to Amazing‘s release, and one of the only movies to outgross the film in its actual release year was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Not far behind was The Hunger Games, and although it wasn’t a money-making juggernaut, The Perks of Being a Wallflower managed to capture the minds of 2012’s teens and critics alike. Before long, theaters would be filled with hormonal youth, cash in hand to see movies like Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars on the big screen.

    Sure, The Avengers also came out in 2012. However, the impact that film would have on the future of Hollywood and the format of superhero movies could not have been known when Webb and screenwriter James Vanderbilt were crafting the story and tone of The Amazing Spider-Man. There had to have been a reason Sony hired a director best known for his work with romantic comedies to helm their spider-reboot, and it’s because they were creating a new take on Peter Parker designed to appeal to the same masses who would turn out for Katniss Everdeen and Edward Cullen. In this regard, the studio and creative team succeeded.

    Andrew Garfield‘s portrayal of Parker is often knocked for being “too cool” and lackadaisical. Yet, he fits right in with the effortlessly attractive and sullenly charming crowd of early 2010’s protagonists. Garfield‘s Peter is not just angry about his life and the deaths of those he loves, he’s angsty instead. His chemistry with Emma Stone, whose Gwen Stacy is still considered a top-tier rendition of the character, is not only incredibly agreeable to watch, but filled with the same pulpable tension as any forbidden teenage love story. The film presents us with two attractive, intelligent characters teeming with lust, who will continue to battle their own fates in an attempt to truly be with each other. That is the crux of the entire plot, a dramatic romance supporting a story that involves giant lizard men and plenty of spandex.

    It’s true that this often leads to moments that conflict with the comic book ideals of Spider-Man’s mythology, but it’s no more or less committed to its own bit than the Raimi films before it. Part of the appeal of The Amazing Spider-Man is the way it so desperately wants to birth its own filter for the wall-crawler’s universe. As much as I love the current Spider-Man entries, they do tend to lack the definitive look and feel that the franchises before them managed to achieve. It’s hard to genuinely insult Amazing for its specifically dark coloring and nearly full-blown emo tone when you consider how unabashedly it doubles down on those things. There is not a corny moment that’s any more or less cheesy than some of the comical scenes in revered adaptations likes Spider-Man 2; the difference is that 2012’s goofball actions and dialogue are written for a different audience than the one seated in 2002. When that 2002’s Spider-Man is taken as the standard, 2012’s becomes a hard pill to swallow.

    I’m not saying that this movie is perfect by any means. Rhys Ifans puts together an admirable performance as Dr. Curt Connors, but his work is undermined by poor character development. A side story involving Peter’s parents having mysterious backgrounds feels unnecessary and overcomplicated, taking away from Martin Sheen and Sally Field as the best Uncle Ben and Aunt May we have seen on film. Based on his actions, everyone should have figured out Peter was Spider-Man almost immediately. Yet, beneath all the complaints you’ve heard a million times, there’s actually a superhero movie based in love that’s campy in a way only the early 2010’s could have pulled off.

    Andrew Garfield Describes His Time As Spider-Man as a Heartbreaking Awakening

    To a generation, Andrew Garfield IS Peter Parker. And in an interview with The Guardian, the actor describes how his time as Spider-Man served as his own coming of age story.

    Garfield played Peter Parker/Spider-Man over the course of two films in 2012 and 2014. The actor became beloved for his portrayal of the character in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but according to him the experience opened his eyes to the nature of the money making machine that is Hollywood.

    “I went from being a naive boy to growing up,” said Garfield. “There are millions of dollars at stake and that’s what guides the ship. It was a big awakening and it hurt.” The pain, according to Garfield, came from the realization that the studio wasn’t interested in the soul of the character and the fans that love him, but their bottom line:

    Comic-Con in San Diego is full of grown men and women still in touch with that pure thing the character meant to them…you add in market forces and test groups and suddenly the focus is less on the soul of it and more on ensuring we make as much money as possible. And I found that – find that – heartbreaking in all matters of the culture. Money is the thing that has corrupted all of us and led to the terrible ecological collapse that we are all about to die under.

    In the years since, Garfield has stayed away from major studio tentpole films though his return as the Web-slinger is this December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is all but confirmed. Hopefully someone will check in with him again following that film to see what brought him back to the role after having such a negative experience the first time around.

    Pitching The Live-Action Spider-Verse

    There’s been a lot of Spider-Man related news making headlines these past few days. With the casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, many fans have started to speculate about how the multiverse plays into the plot of this film, considering the film is set between the events of WandaVision (2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Now, along with this news about the casting and the potential chance of the Multiverse becoming a major theme in this film, right now, the biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the two previous iterations of the Spider-Man; Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, could have a role in this film.

     

    Right now, there is no official confirmation as to whether or not Tobey and/or Andrew could reprise their roles in this film, or whether or not the Spider-Verse will be adapted to either the upcoming Spider-Man 3 film, or another film entirely, IF AT ALL, but the rumors of them returning are just too loud for anyone to ignore. Personally, as the Spider-Man fan that I am, I, like many, would freak out at the potential return of both Tobey and Andrew, but with that excitement, I also carry with me both concern and trepidation that it may not be done correctly. An event as big as this cannot simply be condensed into a two-hour film in my view. So today, I’m here to “pitch” if you will how Marvel Studios/Sony could “if done correctly”, create one of the best comic book films by dividing the story into three different arcs; Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield.

     

    Tom’s Arc: The Rise of Peter Parker

     

    One of the heaviest criticisms Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character faces is that Peter has been subjected to living under the Avengers’ shadow and their adventures, rather than be able to stand out on his own. His own ties to the MCU (Tony Stark, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange) have fans arguing that Peter Parker’s story as an individual with a world of his own, has not been explored in its entirety. For me, I like to see the last 2 Spider-Man films as the foundations for some decent world-building for Peter. In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Peter learned that the suit does not make him Spider-Man, it’s the values of a hero that make him who he is. In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Peter understood that while the world wanted him to be the next Iron Man, he could never live up to those expectations. The world didn’t need another Iron Man, it needed Spider-Man. And now, with these lessons in place, I think that we are finally one step closer to seeing the Spider-Man that most fans want him to be. The Spider-Man that doesn’t need to live in the shadows of the Avengers when he can stand out in the light of his own power. And who better to teach him that…than himself (himselves???).

     

    Andrew & Tobey’s Arc: The Swan Song

     

    The biggest criticisms amongst Spider-Man fans is that after being promised sequels to their respective franchises (mainly Spider-Man 4 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3), the projects were abandoned and many fans disliked that it essentially left their stories without a decent closure. The incorporation of the Spider-Verse storyline could allow fans to delve once again into the worlds of these Spider-Men.

     

    We could see how Peter’s life in the “Raimi-Verse” continued following the events of Spider-Man 3 (2007), with him perhaps being married to Kirsten Dunst’s “Mary Jane Watson” and perhaps even having a child of their own. He could play an older version of Peter Parker, perhaps even be retired from being Spider-Man. As for Peter in the “TASM-Verse”, I could see him being a Spider-Man who still lives with the guilt of Gwen’s death from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)”, struggling to comprehend whether he’s worthy to wear the mask if he broke his promise to keep Gwen safe. As the Multiverse collides, elements from their world begin to condense into the MCU/SMCU “shared universe” where we can bring back other actors from these franchises such as William Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Rhys Ifans, Dane DeHaan, and the list goes on and on. By having this storyline play out, we could incorporate a sort of “swan song” which could allow both Tobey and Andrew to give it their all while finally giving fans the closure they need in order, and move on with Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man.

     

    Overall Arc: With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility.

     

    One of the most iconic lines in all of comic book history and arguably the most important lesson in all of the Spider-Man lore. In order for the Spider-Verse to work, this needs to be the central theme in the overarching story and be the lesson that 3 Peters teach each other and can be applied in different ways. By doing so, you can make it an original take on the iconic line.

     

    Raimi Peter: Since in my pitch, he’s retired and doesn’t want to be Spider-Man anymore, he could be reminded of the lesson and understand that he does not need to sacrifice power over responsibility. The Peters could teach him that his power is what keeps his family and his world safe (MCU Peter) and what happens when he does not act on his power (TASM Peter_. And it could allow him to shift his perspective that by being Spider-Man and using his power due to the responsibility of protecting those around him, the meaning behind that iconic phrase is far greater than by simply just not using his power at all.

     

    MCU Peter: He can learn the central lesson by understanding from the other two Peters that by having great power, you have a greater responsibility to protect those you love (Raimi Peter with his family) and the consequences that can come with it (TASM Peter’s inability to save Gwen).

     

    TASM Peter: Haunted by the guilt that he could not protect the one he loved, the Peters could teach TASM Peter that he cannot allow the guilt of Gwen’s death to influence his role as Spider-Man. With great power can come great consequences and those consequences can either make us or break us. But that only he has the power to forgive himself and the responsibility to move on as Spider-Man.
